With Obama taking the lead in Florida via the newest polling data on the battle ground states, ON ABC's THIS WEEK, Republican Senator Mel Martinez actually said that the economy is no big deal. The people of Florida will get past it and McCain will win the state! How insensitive can a man be?

STEPHANOPOULOS: Senator Martinez, let me begin with you. Florida has one of the highest foreclosure and unemployment rates in the country right now. And four Florida polls since the financial crisis hit all show Barack Obama ahead. So as the Obama campaign charges, is your campaign desperate to
change the subject?

SEN. MEL MARTINEZ (R), FLORIDA: Well, look, for sure, the
economy hurt the McCain campaign in Florida. Florida has been very
hard-hit, as you just stated. The fact of the matter is that there is
much to be done yet. The fact of the matter is that Florida is far from being over. Florida is going to be close all the way to the end.

McCain was well ahead in Florida before the economic crisis hit. I believe once this campaign gets beyond that immediate crisis that Florida is going to come back to the McCain camp.

How do the people of Florida get past an economic crisis of this proportion in thirty days? Or ever?

Gee I guess everything is ok in Florida

He should go tell that to the people in Florida who are watching their 401Ks and savings evaporate.
Nothing worse or angrier than a snow goose with failing fiances, the government will be overthrown by the AARP and its millions marching, walking, shuffling, wheelchairing on Washington.
If the Feds are wise they will close all the OCBs and other buffets in the area.

Sure, he'll be fine once they move past the economy...............

in three years.

I got news for Martinez, the economy isn't going to get any better between now and election day, only worse.

They most certainly will try to play into each groups fears to distract them from the important issues. It's how they roll.

jsut across the water in texas... they never had it so good...

Martinez's attempt at a Macmillian moment.

"indeed let us be frank about it – most of our people have never had it so good."

that would have been true in the summer of 2007

but events and Republican policies dictated otherwise.

John Bird and John Fortune (late 07) sum up the subprime crisis perfectly, never heard a better explanation in simple words describing it.

Other than the walls, floor, and ceiling being on fire...the building is fine!!!

So in 2015 McCain will be ok in Florida. Awesome. Isn't it amazing how Republicans think the economy is just a blip on the radar.

The 700 billion rescue package fixed everything!

I live in Orlando and work in Real Estate. It is so much worse than a rich republican like Martinez will admit.

He's also just another despicable Bush kool-aid drinker. I personally received really ugly push poll calls from hiss campaign the last time he ran, dishonestly linking his opponent, (no surprise), to terrorists.

His push polls made the papers and his campaign didn't even deny it, they just used fear-mongering to spin it. he still only got in on Bush's coattails, (and voter fraud).

Four years later and NOTHING has changed. All the Republicans have is lies and fear, fear and lies.

Oh, yeah. That little issue of the economy. Millions and millions out of work. Millions more underemployed. Millions losing their homes. Prices on food, gas, heating fuel skyrocketing while workers are being paid less and less. Let's just sweep that issue under the rug and get people's minds off it.

The economy doesn't matter. . .as long as gays can't get married and you can't legally burn the flag. Oh. . . and abortion is illegal. My kids don't need food. They can eat the dying grass in the front yard of the forclosed houses across the street.

I guess the Mccain campaign is counting a sudden epidemic of Alzheimer's to kick up in Florida.

Then the obvious strategy for Obama is to zero in on the economy in Florida until Election Day.

Martinez is a real genius to give the Obama campaign a head's up!

BTW, can C&L give us different math problems each time? I like a good mental challenge. Besides, making the problems a little more challenging might keep the trolls away. Just a suggestion. (But no trig or calculus please).

That's all true. A new math problem please. Republican trolls can't do basic math. If Republicans could do math, we wouldn't have a banking meltdown. Yes, I am human. I'm Joe Twelvepack. Six just ain't enough after a hard day at the lumberyard.

He sounds like the typical deaf, dumb and blind monkey... he doesn't see any economic crisis, doesn't hear his constituents complain about an economic crisis and he is dumb to believe there is no economic crisis. Just what was his take on the bailout anyway? Yeah or nay?

Is Martinez an Hispanic name? Just curious.

Mel says "The fact of the matter is that Florida is far from being over. Florida is going to be close all the way to the end."

That is republican talk for we got it in the bag I just have to keep saying it is close so when we flip it electronically via Diebold Machines like we have for the past two 2001 & 2004, we can say we told you we were going to win! See

It won't be as easy this year, what with Kitty Harris out of the way.

So if you sign in it looks like you don't have to go through hoops to post a comment?

So

how do you sign in?

P.S. It's a good thing I know what the answer to 2+2 is. Maybe this will keep out the riff-raff.

The financial crisis has doomed McCain like the economy doomed Bush I in '91 (and he had an 80% approval rating after Desert Storm earlier in the year)

The Repugs cannot hide the mess we are in, its way too obvious. Thats why this election will look like 1984 Reagan/Mondale, where Mondale won his home state and little else.

C'mon people. I know, I know - politically incorrect.

But look at the eyes! Like Bush's. We have to get some medical research on this because the tight span between the eyes and Republicanism, I don't know. Can we get some research here?

Have things changed? It looks like when you post a comment things have changed a little. The comments box used to just drop down and now it recharges to a new comments page altogether?

OK I'll sit back and wait. The comments box dropped down this time. So if you sign in the comments box drops down and if you don't sign in it refreshes to a new comments page and then you have to take a math test to comment? I tried it without signing in and had to take the math test. Luckily I had a cheat sheet on my forearm.

We are just about passed the economy down here in Florida. Most of the jobs that were going to be lost, are lost. Most of the homes that were going to be lost, are lost. And most of the businesses that were going to go under, are gone.

Oh sure it's looks so fu*king sad to see so many homes empty with grass growing up to the windows but hey, probably by tomorrow we'll forget all about it.

Martinez is totally full of shit. Florida is in play this year and we don't get past anything just by changing the subject. We aren't that freakin' stupid......but he is!

Sounds like you're really fond of Mel??! I have some older relatives (93 & 96 yrs. old) who live near Tampa and they rarely mention anything to do with politics. But, recently they've been swearing at the TV, (according to my cousin, their son) calling McCain a liar, and an old fart, and a no-nothing.

As I've never heard either of them swear or even say anything nasty abour anyone, in our vernacular what they really said is that McGoo's a fucking, lame-brained, old prick (or worse). So, I think the old folks
living on SS and investments that just went down the tubes are getting pretty darn fesity and up-in-arms against Johnny & Sarah.

Yeah, that's going to work really well in a state at the epicenter of the housing meltdown. I suspect that they might get over the economy sometime after the fourth consecutive Democratic president.

Dems could hit 60 Senate seats

http://www.politico.com/news/stories/1008/142...

Excellent. although FrankenFeinstein is losing hers in another two years, if she dares to run again.

I'm so glad I'm not an American.

To Glad all over--no one is forcing anyone to be an American. You have the freedom to come and go. Unfortunately, most countries don't have the freedoms we have here. I love my country. But I also know its faults. Our freedom of speech I guess is my favorite. Do you have this same freedom? I can say anything--except yell "FIRE" in a crowded theater. I am not forced to wear bee keeper helmets and garb. I am not forced to practice any certain religion. I can do just about anything I want. Frankly, I cannot think of anything I cannot do. Besides all that we have a wonderful history. Our founding fathers were geniuses. And then time has corrected some errors. And we are always trying to perfect our system. We are currently at a low point. But the best is we can change it-improve it at both local, state and federal level. I have always been glad to be an American, a democrat, a liberal and a woman. I hope you are as proud to be whatever/wherever you are.

Barf! Yes, beautiful Amurka. Sorry but Amurka lives in delusion land where you might think you have liberty and perhaps we do. Why are we better than any other country? Is it the houses, or the communities? How about those friendly, open minded people, huh? Are they better than the rest of our neighbors? Is liberty is having your phone, email and internet tapped for suspicious content! Are Liberty and Freedom are taking off your shoes at the airport even if you're a 78 year old woman in a wheel chair?! Freedom is being incarcerated with no charge filed indefinitely?! Wow, now I’m impressed! I like it better than Zimbabwe already and with the incredible bank and investment scheming that has brought the economy to its knees can we also look forward to something akin to Zimbabwe's inflation rate? I get it. Love it or leave it! Well, if McCain is elected we’re leaving it. Nationalism and pride in America are folly, by the way the founding fathers didn't think a central bank was a good idea at all. Barf, Puke and much Wretching to your high school level cheer leading too. American elections prefer Christians dontcha know! Seen any Jewish/Muslism/Atheist presidential candidats lately? If that is freedom of religion then I'm Ike and Tina Turner. Sorry, the soap box is yours again?

I know, rant-spell-grammar much? Sorry, I simply despise the pro-America meme when we don't even adhere to our own bill of rights. Talk about hypocrisy? Please, can I borrow your tin foil hat?

Actually Canada and Europe have all those same freedoms, and many Asian countries too. It's not like you've cornered the market on that stuff. In Canada we don't have "free speech zones" and you can smoke pot just about anywhere. I travel all over the place and live abroad, all entirely freely. The worst place to enter is the fascist USA. So what's so special about your freedom?

I think while you're busy adoring your "freedoms" you're getting fucked over behind your back. These days, perhaps right in front of your face. Maybe you should come out of your daze, just a wee bit, to see what I can see. It ain't pretty. It looks like a crumbling Empire to me.

A lot of fixing to do here.

I just spent 30 minutes with a young person from Florida,He sells Commercial Real Estate voted Repuke in the last couple of elections and swore up and down that he and his friend were voting for Obama and that the Econ and Palin were the final nails in the Repukes coffin,if this is the trend this year Obama should win by a land slid that even Diebold cant fix.

that should only take 5 to 10 years, lol

Another Republican who doesn't hesitate to point out just how disconnected they are with people's problems.

Gets beyond that immediate crisis? FLMAO! The crisis hasn't even hit the people yet, but it should be just starting be felt about election time as costs of good begins to go up to the massive expansion of the dollar. By March the cold reality of much higher costs should have set in nicely.

These guys are clueless

How do the people of Florida get past an economic crisis of this proportion in thirty days? Or ever?

A: With lots of the red kool-aid and rigged election equipment.

I live in Tampa, otherwise known as the worlds largerst outdoor lunatic asylum.

Dont worry the people in Flori-duh will come through for the GOP.

Jim Cramer on the StreetTV circa summer 2007

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BVl9SQ-KVmE

this is so hilarious, "if all the 2006 SP loans collasped... $500B ...you would still not notice"

hes funny, he should be on SNL.

He can't admit the truth that Floridians have had it with the republican crime machine in their state. The Cuban community wants to be able to travel back to their families in Cuba and help them overcome the ravages of the recent hurricanes. They want the right to send help to their families. The embargo is B.S.

Floridians who are not Cuban are living in economic war zones. Their economy has crashed because of the affect of Republican Organized Crime setting up their laundering machine elsewhere. Combine that with that gigantic sucking sound coming from Wall Street and Florida almost has the trifecta. All it would take is a major hurricane and they're done.

Everyone knows we are on our own with these guys in government.

Isn't it about time we understood that a government OF BY AND FOR the people can help us in rough times? That with regulation it can prevent the run on our treasury these criminals have done?

Florida is suffering. Karma for giving us the Bush Crime Family.

The more we see about McCain's character. Absolutely disgusting.

I found this to be a talking point on the bobblehead shows today. I was amazed when Scarborough said basically the same thing on MTP today. Are these guys really that disconnected to what it happening in the economy that they don't realize this 'story' is not going to disappear mid-week.

Scarborough actually said the economy story would disappear by mid-week; I had to replay the clip 4 times because I thought I was having a stroke and heard him incorrectly. The credit crunch is just now beginning to trickle down to small businesses and consumers. Do they really think because the bailout bill passed and was signed it's all over? I guess they don't read the newspaper or watch the teevee machine because if they did they would know CA is begging for money from the Fed. Gov't.

The republicans never fail to astound me with their unfailing stupidity.

this is the former HUD secretary saying these things... shouldn't he know better??? get past this crisis???

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mel_Martinez

I really can't wait until we get the chance to vote Sen. BushAssKisser from representing Florida. He's as dumb as the days are long.

He may not be far off the mark. There is what's called a crisis moment that can pass when life returns to normalcy. However, after the crash of '29, it took up to a year to a year-and-a-half, before people realized that it wasn't confined to Wall Street, but would affect them personally. By that time this election will long be over.

Even though he's in Orlando, I can sMel Martinez all the way down in Miami...

Mel must be all disconcerted, considering more and more Florida Hispanics are polling Demo this year.

I can't wait until 2010 when Martinez gets his ass handed to him in the elections. The Cuban Repubs in South Florida are thinning out and their sons and daughters are voting Demo. Add the growing Puerto Rican, Dominican, Mexican and Central American communities down here in FL and their growing dislike of harsh Repub immigration tactics to win votes, you begin to see the weakening of the Repub brand and the awakening of second generation Hispanic Demos.

Mel

is a total asshat.

Sounds good. And we will all be better off when we get past the last four months of republicans controlling anything.

When I crossed the Niagara River by train a few years ago, en route to NYC, the border thugs got on with machine guns and trained attack dogs and harassed Hispanic Americans and dark skinned people for two hours. Many were in tears. I wonder how far that kind of story spreads in certain communities. I was horrified. I thought we were going to Auschwitz. I have not re-entered the USA since, nor will I.

is a television state? Everybody just stays home with their air conditioners blasting and watching Oprah?

Stupid git.

Loveit, Love it, LOVE IT! Republicans spouting the "good for democrats" framing like democrats spouting GOP talking points in months gone by. The republicans have so lost control of the narative, they, and their man , McSame, now own the economic disaster. Of course the economy is bad news for Johnny, he created it. Fantastic news, really. I'm tickled blue.

This sounds like Karl Rove's secret 2006 numbers assuring a Republican Congress. He's lying to keep the low-level flunkies working the phones to minimize their losses, and maintain the ability to take advantage of any major fumbles by Obama. It's sort of a "sure, we're behind by 50 points with only 2 minutes to go - but we'll pull it out!"

I hate Mel Martinez so much. He is emblematic (along with Lincoln Diaz-Balart) of the (thankfully increasingly outdated) koolaid drinking single-issue blindness that is much of the original Cuban Exile community. I've been supporting Joe Garcia and Annette Taddeo as much as I can as well as my former Mayor Raul Martinez (who admittedly is not the bluest candidate, but anyone is better than Licoln Diaz-Balart and he has the best shot of bringing over older Cuban American voters).

I also have some angry words for Bill Nelson, but that is another story.

The economy isn't going anywhere. Maybe the McLame camp thinks the bailout is just going to Mr. Clean our economic woes away! The repugnicant party is banking on an awful lot with this "approach". Oh they've got the racists and the uglier and uglier race meme circulating but I don't think that's going to add up to more than jack-shit come Election Day! Good luck with those fellas, your days are numbered, and not one day too soon. I truly believe that an Obama/Biden win will be the most significant event I'll see short of 9/11 in my entire lifetime. Change indeed, get used to it those of you in "white" America who haven't, America is truly starting to own up to the dream!

Obama/Biden

We've all heard about Collateral Damage, right. Well, the new term for those hit hard by the ECONOMIC MELTDOWN (that Floridians are over already) is Negative Externality. They should put so much time energy and resources into fixing what's wrong with America, rather than thinking up clever names for citizen ROAD KILL.

I blame the new format for my bad bad typo. :-)

Sen. Martinez must have thought being a surrogate is akin to being a magician.
"You see the hole. Abra-cadabra! No hole! Now go vote for McCain!"

PS: Like the new site a lot!

Pay no attention to that economy behind that curtain, whippersnapper! The great and powerful Ooze says everything is just fine (for us millionaires)!

i live in a south florida county that has a double-digit unemployment rate. every street you drive down has house after empty house - victims of an unprecedented amount of foreclosures. rising property taxes, rising insurance rates, city and county budget crunches causing the scaling back of essential services and causing things like library closures and hiring freezes. small business after small business going under in these tough economic times. this is our reality, senator. perhaps you should pay a visit to your constituents to gain a clearer view. if you actually believe that the economic difficulties are no "big deal" you're going to have a big wake up call this november when florida says enough is enough and votes obama into office.

This guy is a real joker. I've noticed, since the bailout has been passed, the economy is not "front page news", like it's fixed suddenly. I've got news for ya, it's just beginning.

World stock markets continue to plunge, European banks going down. I'm sure once these retirees realize they have to get a job as a Wal-Mart greeter to eat...

The US debt clock finally ticked over $10 trillion. It was $1 trillion when Ray-gun introduced Ray-gun-omics. That's a lot-o-spending in 30 years.

http://www.brillig.com/debt_clock/

Reslugs are really, really scared, desperate and now are wetting their panties when losing.

Because a lot of people who live here in Florida are not too sharp and another bunch of them can afford to go see Sarah Palin tonight in Boca at a $20,000 a plate dinner tonight.

The rest of us just do the best we can to talk sense to them, but we tend to be too logical and speak in entire sentences.
