Shepard Smith says Holocaust Museum Shooting reminds him of the DHS report
By John Amato Wednesday Jun 10, 2009 1:40pmShepard Smith seems to understand what we've been saying for a long time.
Smith says Holocaust Museum shooting "reminds me" of the DHS report on "crazy extremists"; Herridge concurs.
Janet Napolitano apologized for the DHS report on right wing extremism after being hammered relentlessly by the Limbaughs and Hannitys. How long before right wing talkers try to blame liberals for targeting their hate speech? How long before FOX News has a little talk to Smith? Naw, he got a big contract recently. Nevermind.

it wasn't about "crazy extremists", it was about "crazy RIGHTWING extremists"
don't let the right distance themselves from their own hellspawn
Language is everything in media.
Libruls light logging trucks on fire in the middle of the night 20 miles away from any humans!!! That's terrorism right there. Now we're even!!!
That's Republican equivilency for ya.
If only the muslims had complained so much about the "Bin Laden determined to strike inside the US" report...maybe 911 would have been prevented.
I guess you have to pick on the right groups to have anyone pay attention.
"9/11 was a faith-based initiative"
I tend too agree.
Can we trade Joe Scarborough for Shepard Smith please?
By the way, I read or heard that Joe Scarborough legally represented one of the last wackos that murdered an abortion doctor in Pensacola, Florida - does anybody know if that's true?
In 1993 Scarborough was asked to defend the guy by his family, but he was a Civil Law att. not a Criminal Law att. Its all in his bio on wikpedia.
Shepard Smith will be looking for a job soon.
Nah...he has a big contract. However, if he keeps this up they will assign him elsewhere. The 1 am hour with Shep?
Esquire did a big article on Shepard Smith a couple of months back. He is the only one at Fox News who has a direct line to Roger Ailes and it appears that Mr. Ailes gives Shepard a lot of room. Unlike Sean Hannity, Glenn Beck & Bill O'Reilly, Shepard regards himself as a true journalist and attempts to report the news in a sensible manner.
I don't see Shepard going anywhere in the near future.
Heck if they didn't get rid of him when he alledgedly ran over the lady in florida with his car in a dispute over a parking space I think it was, they aint gonna get rid of him now.
I guess with him being so outspoken against waterboarding of terror suspects maybe he would have been ok with it if we would have just ran over them with a car instead instead of wetting their heads.
Honestly, I hate fox as much as the next sane, rational thinking person. But of all the anchors there, Shep Smith is my favorite. This clip reminds me of the time he totally trashed on Beck, plus lets not forget his "we do not F*cking torture!!" outburst. Hes my favorite Fox News talking head by far.
I think the first time I really noticed Shep was in the wake of Katrina when he went down there and raised some hell on tv because no aid was getting to the people there
Shep may simply be on to give some credence to 'Fair & Balanced'.
'You can't call us a crazy, right wing propaganda arm of the GOP - we have Shep!'
That's okay, Beck found someone to come on his show and say that people like the shooter today were a phenomenon of the Left. So that should even it up for what Shep said.
Somebody went on Cavuto and actually called Shep out (not by name, but the implication was pretty strong who he was referring to) for this, saying that this attack has absolutely nothing to do with that shameful DHS report, which, if you listened to that guy, was apparently only about how dangerous veterans are and how prone they are to snapping.
Yeah. Nothing about rightwing extremists. Just how dangerous veterans are.
So Shep's very sane claim is not only being evened out, it's being drowned in a sea of craziness and lies.
the attack had nothing to do with the report... However the report was all about the attack.
Should have said the guy was upset that Shep said that the attack validated the DHS report, not that the attack happened because of the report.
Whoops.
they're going to say he was driven by economic-bad-times-rage and thats the left's fault?
Oh, ya. Their anger is the "my behavior is your fault" program running in their reptile brains.
"all for me"
"screw everyone else"
"my behavior is your fault"
Cavuto tried to go down that road by comparing the economy now with the economy the first time the guy went nuts. Of course we all know the economic disaster we see today is all President Obama's fault so connect Neal's dots.
.
to bring on Randall Terry to give his views on how this was liberal's fault.
... looking to The Department of Homeland Security for protection from fear. There is really no power we can give them which will stop some wack-a-loon from committing random violence.
Though DHS will surely love any excuse for ask for more power - and to legitimize what it has already taken.
But I challenge anyone to find any major right wing bobblehead who uses the words 'Christian' and 'Terrorist' in the same sentence.
Christian terrorism is on the rise, and a FAR greater danger to this country than Islamic terrorism- because many people (in particular Republicans) turn a blind eye to Christian terrorists.
FOX is calling the shooter a 'racist', but not a terrorist.
I haven't seen anything yet about him being connected to any xian groups. In one of his screeds he blames Christianity for the "destruction of the Roman Empire". He sounds like a Nazi loon to me.
Well in that case so does Hannity. And Rush. And O'Reilly. And Gingrich. And Sessions.... If I keep going her I am going to run out of space and us up all of C+Ls bandwidth.
Of course not. Now if a PETA or Greenpeace member did something like that they would be screaming "Left wing terrorist!" from the rafters.
I find it interesting that the traditional media and even some alternative sources are only now asking if this event justifies the DHS assesment that was widely ridiculed by the right wing. No, it clearly doesn't or at least it isn't the first such event that does. The Christian Terrorist killing of Dr. Tiller was the first event after the release and retraction of the assesment to do that.
They couldn't get behind the shooting of Dr. Tiller. But attack a Jewish icon? Now that will get the attention of the owners of our media, a significant percentage of whom are Jewish.
What I don't want to see, is somehow our right to free speech get legislated away because of the haters on our media. They use their right to free speech every day. I don't want to lose mine because of how they use it.
I understand how you feel.
There is so much hate in the world. And it seems much of it stems from religion.
The Muslims believe their religion and their God is the only way to Heaven (plus the 40 virgins etc.)
The Christians believe their religion and their God (God on Earth in the body of Jesus as the "Messiah") is the only way to Heaven (being re-born and "saved").
The Catholic "Christians" believe that you can only get to Jesus through the "Virgin" Mary (wha??)
The Jews believe that Jesus was a "minor prophet" and that they are "God's chosen people"...better than any other people/race on Earth. That their Messiah is yet to be born. Which is why they are in the year 5,678??? now and the rest of us are in 2009 A.D.
Then there are the beliefs of the Buddhists, the Quakers, the Shakers, the Mormons and on and on and on.
There is the Old Testament which is the Jewish "Bible" and the New Testament which is filled with love and is supposedly the book for "Christians".
Where these holy roller right wing wacko Sarah Palin Bible Thumpin' Evangelical Christians come from is a freakin' mystery to me.
Did they all fail to read the words of Jesus? Remember when they were stoning the prostitute and Jesus said, "Those of you who are without sin....cast the first stone."?
This is why I believe we are where we are today. Human beings all over the planet have their heels dug in with their beliefs that have been handed down through the millenium and no one seems to be willing to come to the table and say, "Let's put ALL our beliefs aside for PEACE."
Just my thoughts.
And though admirably inclusive... you've mistakenly, I'll assume, exclude one group of people. Hey nobody's perfect right? :)
What about us who have no belief(s) for which you speak?
Then are you saying...
You and I disbelieve the same gods...except for one? A simple yes or no will suffice.
I ask the aforementioned with all due respect, Thank you for your time.
Amended: To summarize, I'm an atheist, where is the table. :)
I can only hope that mine comes across the same way. Are atheists a "religious" group?
I, too believe Abbywood's comment is great, but to my reading it broadly addresses religious organizations, and maybe questions the reading comprenhension of some adherents. ;o}
"How long before FOX News has a little talk to Smith? Naw, he got a big contract recently. Nevermind."
I hope he doesn't "trip" and fall in front of a subway train on the way to work one day.
gives you the impression could happen at any time.
Oh wow, let's give SS a big ass hand for WHAT?? I do not watch Fuxs clips on here, I do not watch them anywhere......I would not watch them in a boat, or even if Bill Frist was f**kin' a goat.....oh, you know what I mean.
This teevee station has played a major role in tearing down our constitution, and is not to be given any creedence under any circumstance.
The only thing I want to hear about Fuxs Snooze is that they have arrested the major players for terrorism. Then start with the other goat boyz like that creepy, bulgy-eyed beck, etc.
If I recall correctly, Shep was the only person on Fox who talked about the DHS report for what it really was; not a stinging indictment of all veterans and all conservatives ever (omg), but a warning of far-right extremists. And his reporting went widely ignored by the rest of his colleagues in favor of fear mongering and having an excuse to blast the Obama White House for something the Bush Administration was working on.
They must really be paying him well. That's the only reason I can see Shep putting up with all of this.
What did "Shep" have to say about the report when it came out. "Shep is a wolf in sheep's clothes sometimes. I've heard enough from him to never trust him. Even a broken clock is correct twice a day.
He's not quite the milquetoast pantywaist Alan Colmes was.
I hope you are not saying that "Shep" is more liberal than Colmes.
I think he was saying Shep isn't the pushover Alan was.
Exactly. Thank you.
"Only Sheep need a shepherd" ;)
How long until the Hannity/Limbaugh/Inhofe wing of the GOP claims this attack happened because Obama is getting soft on Iran, thus egging Israel haters on to do something like this? Apolgies if it's already happened, I just got off work.
The "my behavior is your fault" program is correlating - please stand by.
Shit. I just read at WaPo that the guard who was shot was killed. FWIW, he's African-American.
shot down in the line of duty by a whacked out, delusional, gun-crazed right-winger.
When is this gonna stop? That's the question I have for all decent republicans out there. If you are out there, anymore.
They got a ideology!
About 4 hours-the shooting occurred at 1:00, Glenn Beck used Obama's association with Rev. Wright as fodder for the anger in the country. Amazing.
Give that old boy some lithium.
Give that boy some cyanide.
Give this boy some absinthe.
People should not even need think about ethnicity.
She is beginning to See the Light!
"Beware of terrorists! They can be anywhere!"
Is that C&L's new meme? Finally, after 8 years, you support the Neocon agenda!Yay!
We are not afraid.
We know right where they are. They are here.
Nice try. Go collect your free lamp.

The use of quotation marks means you are stating word for word what someone else said here. That did not occur. Therefore you are not only a troll, you are an uneducated one at that.
LOL at you.
So you want to be academical about how I write a two line post?
Fine. I have pretty much freedom to use quotation marks around a phrase I'm asking about. If I had meant that someone said it word by word, I would have copy-pasted what they said into a blockquote.
If you think I'm a troll, why don't you check out my posts. I also bet I have followed this blog for longer than you.
Listen to you: "They are here". (***Dumbasses take note, this was an ACTUAL QUOTE.)
We have been spending the past 8 years fighting against the fearmongering of the NeoCons and Bushco. Right now it seems like some parts of the progressive community are sinking into blind partisanship and are focusing on hyping the threat of domestic terrorists and branding and demonizing the political opposition in the same way that right-wingers labeled liberals under the height of the Bushco regime. I'm not talking about this case involcing a crazy Nazi. I'm talking about the theme of a big percentage of the posts on C&L the past months.
Now some progressives seems to be really scared of the average teabagger. Isn't it obvious where this is headed?
Let me make it simple. A lot of "progressives seems to be all about":
1: Blind support for the president of "their" party.
2: Demonizing the opposition
3: Spending way too much time talking about perceived threats from terrorists and fringe elements instead of talking about where the country is headed.
Sounds familiar?
Oh, and let me remind you that Habeas Corpus is still not back in place, that illegal surveillance is still the norm, that black sites are still in place and that the criminals of the last administration are slipping away and excused, even respected. All the while we are focusing on this.
What powers will we give The Department of Homeland Security to protect us? What rights will we give up?
Nothing we give them will protect us from a random loon. But they will take whatever we'll give.
Hurray. Fiver understands my point.
So much for wannabe academical nitpicks with blurred long distance vision.
I'm in total agreement with you.
Someone has to grow a set and stop crying about how bad everyone else is, "turn the other cheek", and start trying to fix things. No matter what happens there will be nutjobs, there will be Glenn Beck crying in hysterics and there will be opposition to progress. It doesn't mean we should adopt their tactics of hate-mongering, polarization by fear and demonizing (Like Ed Schultz does on his new show).
Let's be smart about making sure the blame for these acts is placed fairly where it is deserved yet refrain from hysteria in our reactions.
Keep up the good work Celsius in trying to bring rational thought back to the forefront.
We've got plenty of experts who far exceed my skill here.
But fear mongering can be directed from both the Left and Right.
We're just not defensive enough when it's from the Left.
I'm no poli-sci or psych expert (in fact, I'm a stupid git) but I think the lack of defensiveness from Liberals in general - there are many exceptions of course - is due to a attempt to aim for the heart and mind instead of the gut. When something like this tragedy occurs there are some who for many reasons react in a very visceral way, while others try to understand the dnamics of it. Much like Timothy McVeigh and how many were happy to just label him "evil" yet Gore Vidal actually had a correspondence with him to try and understand the reasons for his actions (from his book: "Perpetual War for Perpetual Peace"). That is how you learn to address a problem and hopefully stop ones in the future. Much like the DHS report tried to do. Much like Obama's approach to Iran as opposed to Bush's approach.
Just my two cents.
Not too bad for a stupid git :)
Yes, there will always be lunatics out there. However, we can never be safe from all. Some will always find some asocial cause to fit their asocial psyche and perform asocial acts. But there is good cause for trying to understand why some radical movements blossom. Here is a clue, when a great number of people feel stepped on, there is usually an underlying cause, even if it might stem from propaganda and agressive projection of the authoritarian mindset. In contrast to the lone lunatic, the reasons or triggers can be understood.
The most dangerous thing we can do is to tell our children that "it's just a fucked up world out there, with crazy people everywhere." Hyping that mindset is a strategy to divide and conquer, and it actually turns people into what they fear themselves. People are not alone, and people are mostly good and well meaning. The human soul can overcome fear and evil. These are important facts that, if missed, can turn anyone into a raving "conservative".
All the fear that is being pushed around in the world today is definitely one of the causes for why we get all this violence and tyrannies back. So we should fight that.
We tend to be afraid of the unknown, of what we don't understand. Understanding the mechanisms behind for instance what makes people into organized teabaggers, instead of just fearing them and writing them off as crazy people is important. Seeing them for what they are, and thus knowing how to choose a different path or mindset.
"You're either with us or against us" is a mindset we need to work on erasing from the human mind and replace it with "We're all in this together."
The huge majority of people tend to want the same thing. A life in freedom and dignity, with safety and shelter enough to manage and create their own life as they wish.
It's tough to avoid. Of course I'm scared of some gun wielding bigot trying to kill my pro-choice kitten.
Who wouldn't be?
But when I'm told I need to give some "authority" extra power to protect me (and my kitten), I want a guarantee.
What? I can't get a guarantee?
So then why does someone want the extra power? If the kitten must live with these existential threats no matter what, then what's the point? Other than more more power.
Well said regarding a guarantee.
Also, cats are anti-authoritarian by nature :)
mmmm...
Well so much for your self-satisfaction committee.
I tried to post this last night, but lost power for 3 hours due to storms.
All y'all are doing is stating the obvious. It is endemic to human nature to see one's own group as decentralized and not as effective as an opposing group. That's basic sociology, not political science.
People for the most part here are reacting to the perceived unbalance in media reportage and in prosecutions. Terrorism is blamed on liberals in part, and one person like the recruiter shooter is presented in the news as an Islamic boogy-man. If there's a crime involving a "strange" cultist it's blamed on the nature of cults. The prosecution trips over itself trying to find everything the accused ever read, checked out etc. That doesn't seem to be the case with events like the one at the museum, or before with Dr. Tiller's killing.
Meanwhile the MSM never seem to make the connection between the over-heated propaganda coming from the right now and crimes like this most recent shootinig. Not that they should make the connection, except for consistency, or to balance out their other reporting.
The murder of the museum guard is still fresh. Early in the day it was reported as a wounding. People are still processing the information. At least here in this site you're seeing people think they're way through it, whereas on the news during an ongoing crisis the reporters of major TV channels report rumors as news. I remember at one point during a disaster, I think it was Dan Rather, got so frustrated passing on rumors that he snapped, "Will somebody bring me some real news!
Wow. So you can write in a sensible manner after all? I thought semi-humorous ramblings were your forte. I guess you can't write 300 comments per day if you make them contain any sense and real writing.
Stating the obvious? Perhaps to you. But I think you can find a lot of people out there that would disagree with parts of what we said.
Anyway, one can argue that anyone posting something you agree with is stating the obvious, which would in that narrow sense make the whole blogging and commenting thing pointless then?
As another pointed out that's not a quote anywhere from this site.
Will we now have NSL's, data sweeping and warrantless wire tapping of those who lend any kind of verbal support for these Talibaptists?
Judging by o'really's, gland peck's and rash limpballs girth I'd be against them baring arms.
Hope you get the video of this: Republican Rep Mike Rogers in an interview with Matthews on Hardball
repeatedly insisted that people such as this, while "extremists", essentially act because of personal frustration with the economy. And that no one is listening to them! Talk about finding a way to do a back door blame of Obama! And, of course, he also managed to say that on the left there were equally horrendous extremist violent groups, such as among environmentalists! Give me a break.
Evil Fox Wingnut Propaganda, along with Shepard Smith, promote, encourage and instigate the murder and lies of these right wing extremists. They are all guilty. They need to be held accountable, they need to stop.
maybe it's time to have him sit across from insanity - sean the leprechaun knows shepard whould take him outside and knock his pan in.
I was quite shocked to hear about this guy's history. The local news here in St. Louis is reporting that he graduated from my alma mater, Washington University in St. Louis, with a degree in journalism. When I went there, there were a lot of Jews attending (and probably still are), and there are a lot of Jews living in the surrounding area. I know the guy graduated from there in some 55 years ago, but it's hard to believe someone like this attended an institution such as Washington U....but, I guess these haters can be anywhere.
Shep isn't long for Fox News.
First, it was the criticism of Glenn Beck (the wide-eyed twisted head stare), and last week, he ridiculed the murderer of Dr. Tiller when he reported the killer was upset for being treated like a criminal. "Ya think???" exclaimed Smith.
Now, he's pointing out the seeming accuracy of the report FnS criticized.
He's not BSC enough by current Fox News Standards and thus has to go.
BS, Fox news is playing Good Evil Extremist (Shepard Smith), Bad Evil Extremist (O'Rielly, etc. ).
If you are affiliated with the neo-con Fox News you've sold your soul and are also responsible for their lies, distortion, Republicanism, and murder.
MSNBC Notes: Holocaust Museum Shooter Popular On Free Republic
http://obix1.com/Off_Site/Palpatine-Saga.jpg
Lou Dobbs has just declared that the killer worked alone, in isolation, and therefor presumably had nothing to do with the Lou Dobbs program. nice try Lou... Wrong, and you tried, but that's not what counts.
erased the "Bin Laden Determined to Strike" PDB and the Hart-Rudd Report from history...
and was behind the DHA 100% on promoting their terror alerts.
Apparently, they don't like the DHA when it's actually effective in creating security, only when it can be used for political gain, like increasing terror level alerts prior to a big election.
I have no fucking idea how Shepherd Smith has kept his job at Fox for as long as he has. He's like the lone voice of sanity over there and probably the one and only reason to consider watching F-word news.
they use him to prove that they are "fair and ballanced"
are traitors to their country?
can we now kick all their asses out?
i need a better job and home...and they are taking up space from good americans like me
...please report to Mr. Murdoch's office immediately.
I just took a gander at the Fox Nation blog site. At this moment, there are 226 comments about the Letterman comment about Palin's daughter (Todd's outrage CLAIMS to be because he thinks Dave was referring to the 14 year old) and their are 26 about the Holocaust shooting. A ratio of nearly 9 to 1 are more concerned about offending the Governor's daughter than a terrorist attack on ANOTHER Jewish monument.
PS: I give Shep Smith another 2 weeks before he's doing "Sham-wow" commercials.
Anyone else cringe when he said "Yeah, there was blowback".
Best news blooper in recent memory...
Faux Noise is desperately trying to cover up the fact that the shooter was absolutely a practicing Neo-Nazi, Kool-aid drinking, Right Wing-Nutjob. As for Palin she always talked like a skanky, stupid Bitch, so what are people to think??.
