Ted Kennedy RIP

Digby writes:

One Year Ago Today

It was a privilege to be there.

RIP Teddy.

I was there too. It was awesome and Ted lit up Denver. I just heard historian Michael Beschloss say on MSNBC that when Ted was a boy he knew FDR. He saw it all and was part of so much American history.

Statement from The Kennedy Family:

“Edward M. Kennedy – the husband, father, grandfather, brother and

uncle we loved so deeply – died late Tuesday night at home in Hyannis

Port. We’ve lost the irreplaceable center of our family and joyous

light in our lives, but the inspiration of his faith, optimism, and

perseverance will live on in our hearts forever. We thank everyone

who gave him care and support over this last year, and everyone who

stood with him for so many years in his tireless march for progress

toward justice, fairness and opportunity for all. He loved this

country and devoted his life to serving it. He always believed that

our best days were still ahead, but it’s hard to imagine any of them

without him.”

Who was it that could have never guessed that terrorists would fly planes into buildings after being told they were going to?
Who was it that never knew the stockmarket was going to crash?
Who was it that didn't know that hurricane katrina was going to hit new orleans?
Who was it that never knew that Iraq would turn into a mess?
Should I go on and on and on?
republicanism is a mental illness!
I for one was never a Kennedy fan. But when compaired to any republican he was far and above a much better person, and represenative for the people.
Farewell Mr Kennedy and thank you!

Expect some really ugly tactics on both sides in the coming weeks as both Dems and Reps accuse each other of being opportunistic or exploiting Kennedy's death as they push or obstruct the bill.

I think the Dems should use his death as a rallying cry and get some meaningful reform passed with a quickness...
I don't think Ted would mind...

the end of an era

i am going to stay far away from right wing radio tomorrow, for i know they will all be saying terrible things about the man

it was teddy, not his brothers (for i was really too young to remember either) who got me excited about politics

two of my friend's fathers also passed away this week...so im really bummed now

i just hope he didnt have too much pain in the end

Bix12's picture

Yes, I, too, hope his passing was as peaceful as possible.

As a native New Englander, lifelong liberal & disabled American, Senator Ted probably meant more to me personally than others elsewhere in the country--but perhaps not. I know he was loved deeply by the people in his home state, and in return, he loved them, but more than that, he loved America.

Over the years, I've grown cynical, and disgusted with politicians in this country...but Ted Kennedy was different. He had genuine integrity, he truly loved being a senator--for all the right reasons--and he was a champion for the underdog.

I admire him more than any other politician I can think of, and I especially admire him as a human being. Like all of us, he was far from perfect, and had his share of flaws, but he never gave up on his calling, he never threw in the towel, even though he had any number of reasons to do so...but he was made of much sterner stuff.

He was a great man, & I loved him.

Thank you, Uncle Teddy.

QAJ's picture

Indeed, the Kennedy's and this country have just suffered a great loss. I fear we will not see such a champion for the American people again. RIP Ted, you will be missed, my thoughts and prayers to the family.

The way to properly honor this great man's memory is to finish the job he started. Shame on the Democrats if they pass a half measure of a universal healthcare bill!

Several years ago I was at the airport in Palm Beach to pick up a family member. I looked up to see Sen. Kennedy standing right beside me. He smiled at me and nodded. I was in such awe at seeing him that I just stood there. I'm sure he thought I had some mental problems or something.

The Kennedy family has had so many sad days and many came too soon. Thank goodness we had this Kennedy for so long because he was able to do so much good for so many people. He will be missed by many.

Tears.....and then some...Ted Kennedy was A Real Liberal!!!!

I knew I'd be sad when he died and I am....

May he spirit live on.....forever...

One of the most moving talks he gave was the eulogy for his nephew John F. Kennedy, Jr. I knew he had so much inner humanity after he gave that speech which was very difficult for him and the rest of the family. I think he got very close to Caroline after the death of John Jr. That was also a very sad day and time for the Kennedy family.

I got 1 for you guys, CENTRAL KANSAS PRISON MINISTRY,
I have a new cool program, I can see the lat and longitude of the PC's ip showing in my router logs. You know I have been talking about online harrassment. Thinks maybe I found one of the organizations screwing with our computers.

Nowwhat's picture

I'll get a bit more specific, Latitude 38, Longitude -97.
Ip one of the 10 coming from there 65.55.239.188. It may not be the Prison Ministry itself but it for sure is working off the same massive pipe they have to the internet.

And also complain to Earthlink their hosting company, CKPM operate from a server in Florida. abuse@abuse.earthlink.net

Reddit, Digg, Wired and other social/tech sites would also be interested.

65.55.239.188 is a Microsoft IP address, has your PC been doing some OS updating !!!

Nowwhat's picture
...

No my PC doesn't update, lol. Thats a hotmail server, msn. Msft!!
I believe it is a lame hack, exploiting the the mailservers. I am getting so close, the little booger originates to Kansas, I only wonder if it is masked there too or is that truely the final destination? Once business hours begin for the usa here I will call me some ISP's and also will call Microsoft abuse again, FBI won't respond to me. The local police, haha? I just got to try to shut him down once in a while, think thats all i got.

If CKPM are doing dodgy things, then the oxygen of publicity on a few large popular social/tech biased websites will work wonders.

Post the details on one of the tech Reddit sections, others might have seen this too or can look out for it in their router logs. Either way you will get help from others there, and it will be flagged.

Once you and a few others there verify it, then the generally non technical peoples of C&L and DailyKos will appreciate the news.

I wasn't this upset when my (maternal) grandmother died. Let's hope his legacy of social justice is honored by getting this health care reform pushed through. What a sad day...

He ripped the Republicans a new one rather eloquently, they were blocking the 10 year late raising of the minimum wage. What Sen. Edward Kennedy said about minimum wage and its slavery level, also applies to rationed health care in America.

President Obama could call the HI reforms the 'Ted Kennedy Reform Bill', and dare the Repigs to block it.

...is to pass a really good Health Care Bill...

This is the time for Democrats, and Obama in particular, to show the respect that Ted Kennedy deserved for his 42 years in the Senate by passing the one bill that was most important to his life. It seems to me that the final bill, which should also be named after Ted, should give us the real public option that the great majority of Americans want and that Kennedy had not yet managed to get us.

Ted's ability to cross the aisle and bring in Republicans... and his support over the years for many of his Republican colleagues on civil legislation... should be stressed by Dodd and the other Senators that Ted trusted with his concerns when the brain tumor kept him out of DC. This is the time to call in the notes that Ted gave out over the years.

It would be, I think, a tremendous embarrassment to the Republicans, like Orrin Hatch and Charles Grassley NOT to support a Ted Kennedy Health Care Bill. And though they would probably come out against it, by using Kennedy's name here, they would also be defeating Republican challengers in man of the 2010 elections.

I hope Obama realizes the immense opportunity available at this moment.

The Kennedy Family has had to go through so much, its gut wrenching. They are truly America's family. From JFK, to Bobby, to Teddy....what great men these were, I'm just sorry I wasn't alive to see the older brothers in person.

I agree with many of the posts above...the best way to honor him is to pass a healthcare reform bill that covers all americans. Universal coverage. We can wait for single payer, but the 'public option' is a definitive must have.

Message to all Democratic representatives: If you want to honor this man's legacy....YOU WILL PASS HEALTHCARE LEGLISLATION THAT COVERS ALL AMERICANS...its time to join the 21st Century.

"Bleeding Heart Yard was to be found; a place much changed in feature and in fortune, yet with some relish of ancient greatness about it. Two or three mighty stacks of chimneys, and a few large dark rooms which had escaped being walled and subdivided out of the recognition of their old proportions, gave the Yard a character. It was inhabited by poor people, who set up their rest among its faded glories, as Arabs of the desert pitch their tents among the fallen stones of the Pyramids; but there was a family sentimental feeling prevalent in the Yard, that it had a character."

Freepers, remember who you are [Kennedy Death]

Today, a human being died. He is now in eternity. Whether or not he made any private repentance of what he did concerning Mary Jo, abortion, or any other sin he committed in this life is not known. We may doubt seriously that he did since he showed no inclination in his public life. But we do not know. Only God knows.

What we do know is that we have a longstanding tradition on Free Republic. We hold our tongues when someone dies. We do not act like the people on Democrat underground who rejoiced when Tony Snow and Ronald Reagan died. We do not make fun or light of death or hell, for they are very serious things indeed; and if Kennedy died without Christ where he is today isn't a place we should wish on anyone (if you understand the implications, you will understand that statement).

Yes, he did a very bad thing in the 60s. He did not get away with it and no amount of Freeper piling on will change things one way or another.

So, while you may have hated the man, please self moderate your comments. We are not the D.U. We are not the Koz. We are Free Republic and we can not allow them to make us into them or we have lost something very important about this site.
