William Shatner does Sarah Palin

Because outside of Bill Kristol, William Shatner is the only person who understands her.

This will probably be remembered as a great Shatner performance. Right up there with "Lucy in the Sky With Diamonds."

He is a parody of a parody of a previous parody, ya gotta love the man. He turns up everywhere and just keeps going and going.....that rabbit better watch out, Bill could do that commercial too.

SadButTrue's picture

I've seen this all over the nets since yesterday. It probably won't lead to Conan beating Letterman in the ratings or anything, but he's starting to gain some credibility with moves like this.

"In theory theory and practice are alike. In practice they are very different."

ThunderMonkey's picture

is getting the 18-49 demographic more than Letterman, even though Letterman is winning overall.

"When are we going to stop trying to tell elected officials what to do. Our job is to spend the taxpayers' money the best way we can." -- Tommy Watkins, Justice of the Peace, Crawford County, Arkansas

..the best way to parody Sarah Palin is to reproduce her words verbatim. I mean really, this stuff needs no editing to be hilarious.

" Soaring through nature's finest snow Dinali, the Great One, soaring under the midnight sun..
..And then the extremes in the wintertime
It's the frozen road that is competing with all of its ice-fogged frigid beauty -- the cold though, doesn't it split the Cheechakos from the sourdoughs?
And then in the summertime such extremes -- summertime, about 150 degrees hotter than just some months ago, and then, just some months from now..
The fireweed blooming along the frost-heaves and merciless rivers that are rushing and carving and reminding us that here Mother Nature wins and it is as throughout all Alaska that big, wild good life, teeming along the road that is north, to the future.
"

"In theory theory and practice are alike. In practice they are very different."

Truesuz's picture

FYI- there are many place in AK where it can be -40/-50 in the winter and then 80 to 90 degrees in the summer. Just one of the joys of living in AK.

Actually Hole remains one of my favorites.

As one music critic put it, it was like no one told her she was supposed to be grunge, but was a punk who knew more than three chords.

When she married kurt, they said of her that it was a known rock star (Babes in Toyland) marring some wannabe unknown.

I kind of like her, but can't say I've followed her career, or even know much about her. I never got into Nirvana, but don't dislike them either.

She seems free-spirited, and has a kind of fuck everybody attitude.

(I like that in a girl.)

Shatner's so awesome!

annie's picture

It stops right after the advertisement, and a little circle goes round and round right in the middle of the screen.

I could see it here.

That out of the way, Palin's unfortunate speech does not translate into poetry even when presented by the rotund William Shatner. It's more like the sincere and intense speech of somebody whose brain has been fried on drugs.

If she's aiming for a TV career as speculated by some, woe to her audience...

jurassicpork's picture

...could've pulled that off, the others being Adam West and Martin Milner. That was perfect, tongue in cheek satire of a speech that was the Plan 9 From Outer Space or The Room of political speeches. In literary circles that's what we call "found poetry".

By the way, even though I've personally thanked everyone who'd done so, I'd still like to thank everyone who helped me yesterday with my crisis. My fiancée and I deeply appreciate the kind and generous gestures (although we're not so appreciative of John "Garbo" Aravosis banning me from ABlog). We're not out of the woods yet but at least we won't have to worry about paying the rent and going hungry for the immediate future.

You've just become a victim of Kirk-fu.

His drop-kick and fall on his ass move.
If he had ripped his shirt while performing, there would have been nothing left of you.

HA!

That is brilliant!

watchdog's picture

Things look bleak, everything going to hell? Just throw in RSK (Ripped Shirt Kirk) and all will turn out OK, because whenever Kirks shirt got ripped, what ever crisis was occuring almost instantly turned around in Kirks favor. If his shirt had gotten ripped in the new Star Trek movie, the planet would not have been destroyed and he would have captured the Romulan ship for the good of the Federation, in ST 2 he would have captured Khan, the ship would have gotten away with ease and Spock would not have died.

Wow. I laughed til I cried. It was brilliant! Love Shatner; love Conan!

And the video montage of "Lucy". Too funny. And interesting to me that "Star Trek" was a product of Desilu studios, and that Lucille Ball was instrumental in promoting the series in its fledgling infancy.

Check out some great MP3's of Shatner, Nimoy, Nichols (singing the show's theme with an obnoxiously stratespheric wail at its end) among many other guilty pleasures of mine over on April Winchell's marvellous site: http://www.aprilwinchell.com/audio/ Good show, John!

Two questions:

1. Where was the bass? You see the guy playing the upright bass, but does anyone actually *hear* it on the audio track? 'Cause I don't. Someone's getting fired -- that guy had a prominent role and it was ruined!

2. Is it just me, or did Shat seem weak and unhealthy as he tromped onstage?

liberalNmoderation's picture

unless they're mic'd they don't come through well on tv.

information.please's picture
OK

My shot: LibNMod is right. You can hear its rhythmic plucking, though alittle too faintly in the mix, so imagine a separate mic wasn't attached directly to the instrument itself (should've been)

Second: Mr. Shatner is pushing 80 thereabouts I think, but I'd surmise it's more of a question of his portly gain and torso weight/leg mass ratio. He was quite a 'looker' in his day, almost a pretty boy kind in his youth. In spite of his present puffiness, he's obviously still a force to be reckoned with, however cheesy or over-the-top he sometimes comes off. Like someone mentioned above, he seems the Eveready 'rabbit' gift that keeps on giving- and I love him so!

In addition to William Shattner (whom I've always liked), I do believe Stephen Colbert also understands Sarah Palin. Watch how he demonstrates Palin's method of giving speeches:

You know how people ask, "If you could spend a day with just one person, who would it be?"

When they do that, I obviously request a ruling on whether the dead can be included in this. If the answer is no, then I would choose Shatner to spend the day with. Not a trendy pick, but I am really certain I would have stories. Oh yes, I WOULD have stories.
