Yes, I am an NFL Draft geek

Since I was a teenager I was always intrigued by the NFL draft since I'm a big NY Giants fan. I tape it and then scan until they draft. The Giants took Hakeem Nicks out of NC because the idiot known as Plaxico shot himself in the leg.

The NY Jets made a big trade today to get the highly rated USC QB, Mark Sanchez.

I would be rooting for them...The Colts tried to make a deal to come here, but the people who lived near Dodger stadium wouldn't go for a team there so, no football in LA.

History lesson: the Rams left LA for St. Louis in 1995. That same offseason, the Raiders moved back to Oakland. LA has not had a team since. In fact, they lost out on getting the 32nd team (the Houston Texans) because they couldn't come up with a good plan.

By the way, as a lifelong Rams fan, I was very pleased with their first two rounds. They drafted for need, especially with Jason Smith on the offensive line. I've got a good feeling about this kid.

I also like the Laurinaitis pick in the second round.

Overall, I like most of the choices the Rams have made this offseason. I, for one, would draft another offensive tackle in the later rounds, as I have ZERO confidence in Alex Barron (who I have wanted off the team for three years now). I'm sad to see two future Hall of Famers - Orlando Pace and "Big Game" Torry Holt - leave, but if it helps the team get better, so be it. I think Spagnuolo will be a good solid coach, unlike that dope Linehan.

I don't get it. I'm a sports fan - Steelers, Penguins, Hapless Pirates, Pitt, Jacksonville University, Jaguars when they're not playing the Steelers, PGA Tour. Generally when watching a game not involving these teams, we need to find a reason to pull for one team over another. Generally, you keep a mental list of teams you'd like to see lose, factoring in arbitrary reasons why you want to see a particular team lose. For me, as a lifelong Steeler fan, I must always root against the Cowboys, Ravens, and Raiders and the Cheatin' Patriots. Then I root against whichever team T.O. happens to be playing on, just like I had to hate the SF Giants when Barry Bonds played for them. The Iggle fans were a lot of fun when I was drinking with them when Jacksonville had the Superbowl. Then they demolished the Cowboys last year, so Philly is on my good list (except for the Flyers.)

Watching golf, having seen a number of Players Championships in person, I've come up with a personal list of good guys and bad guys, but my criteria is sort of arbitrary, and golf fans are polite to everybody. I do think that patrons screaming "Get in the Hole" an instant after a tee shot should probably be tossed off the course. As a Pittsburgh and Jacksonville guy, my rule of thumb is, unless trumped by the reasons above, or reasons related to the standings of one of my teams, when two teams play, root for the smaller market and the team with less money.

That said, I don't get the obsession with the draft. None of us has seen enough of any of these college players to really have formed our own opinion. We need to trust the Mel Kipers of the world. I'm glad the Steelers grabbed a lineman in the first round, but I've never seen the guy play. I hope they grab a bunch of offensive linemen in today's rounds, but we won't know anything about them until we see them perform at the higher level.

Why the obsession? It's the one day a year when fans of down and out teams (like my Lions...still trying to decide if I'm still a fan) can pretend that their luck may turn around this year.

Well, that's not going to happen. Their defense is absolutely horrible, as are both lines, and they shored them up (?) with a questionable QB and a TE that many said wasn't worthy of a top 20 pick. The only way their draft could have been worse would have been if they had drafted Crabtree or the Raiders' WR first overall.

I'm starting to think we might owe Matt Millen (and before him, Wayne Fontes) a huge apology.

The Packers are switching to a 3-4 defense and have drafted well for that. We'll see if they can get a decent offensive linesman, still. It's easier to tell when the dust settles.

In general, I wish first-round picks had more modest salaries combined with performance incentives in the contracts - at least, if they're starting. The huge rookie contracts can really hurt a team, and put undue pressure on the rookies.

And yeah, we all need our distractions. There's no reason we can't fight for human rights and a better economic system and also enjoy the arts or sports. Hell, sometimes activism dovetails - fight for funding for the arts, and make sure to enjoy them, too. Work for the environment, but make the time to take a hike in the mountains. Otherwise, it's easy to get burnt out, lose perspective, or not enjoy what one was fighting for in the first place.

As a long suffering Jets fan let me say this: Welcome to Hell. All the joy and the wins and the fame you had at USC will now be be a Karmic burden to be paid off by years of bad teams whose linemen yell "look out!" a lot right after the snap. In city that barely remembers this team exists.

Been one for 30+ years. Their draft is terrible. They picked the 4th rated WR when number 1,2 and 3 were there with the 7th pick? Then they pick the 22nd ranked safety when 4 5 6 7 8 9 10 11 12 13 14 15 16 17 18 19 20 and 21 were still there. I hate Al Davis, I really do.

What do you expect with Al Davis at the helm?

I live in the San Diego area and I grew up in WI. I was weaned on Bart Starr, Willie Davis, Hornung, Taylor and of course the GREAT Vince Lombardi. And yet the Chargers are owned by the Spanos family, who made their bones in construction in CA. Not sure about Dean, but his father is one of the most fanatical RW Bush lickers around. So it's really a conflict of interest for me to watch, much less cheer for the Chargers.

Third generation Packer fan here. My granddad had season tickets before he moved away, and my parents were at the Ice Bowl. Here's hoping for a good season!

I am a man of constant sorrow. Once again the Browns get fleeced. Oh well id Mack doesnt work out we wont lose a whole bunch of money. After having said that I think the first 4 picks should all be NFL starters soon.

We're doing OK. Got Michael Crabtree (WR - Texas Tech) with the 10th overall pick, the traded our 2nd and 4th round picks to Carolina for their first round pick next year. We really need a good nose tackle and the O-line is always a question mark.

Which is GREAT news! Because the Bears draft notoriously bad, their worst choice of recent memory was running back Cedric Benson, who held out, signed a huge contract, and then got hurt. Next year he was used sparingly, then after repeated arrests he was CUT, big contract, guaranteed $$$.

So give me Jay Cutler, you can have your draft.

The #1 pick, a 21 year old kid, gets $41.7 million in guarantees before even playing one down? Where's the incentive? how about paying him this money IF he meets specific GOALS, the first of which would be to put on a helmet and MAKE THE TEAM?

With everything going on in the world, this is just plain ridiculous.

Sporting News has been covering the draft the last couple days, and has half the issue focused on the day 1 picks today:

You have to subscribe to view the whole issue, but it's free and there's very little advertising. I get one message a day from them, when the new issue is posted, so doesn't appear that I've been added to any crappy "partner" lists or the like.

With their first pick. That's where they really need big bodies.
Crabtree is a very good decision though. Bruce will be gone next year.
So this gives Crabtree the opportunity to learn from one of the greats.

I hated Issac Bruce when he was with the Rams. The guy just walked all over us. That'll happen when someone is so good that they kick your ass repeatedly. I've always had respect for him. How can you not?
I luv the hellouttahim now. I still haven't figured out who the Niners will take with their 3rd pick.They traded away their 2nd pick for a first round pick next year. From the Bills I think. I could be wrong about that though.
