Recycled Lies from the Yes on 1 Campaign in Maine

This is the brand new ad from the Yes on 1 campaign in Maine:

And, this is a Prop 8 ad from last fall in California:

The same consultants behind Prop 8 were hired for exactly this, drive up fear about marriage equality using lies about kids and churches. It goes without saying that Maine does not force school to talk about marriage equality, in fact they don't have to talk about marriage at all. Dirigo Blue got a comment from the Maine Department of Education Comunications Director David Connerty-Marin:

I cannot comment on Massachusetts education law or decisions made by local school districts in Massachusetts. Here in Maine, our Learning Results standards and education regulations make no reference to the teaching of marriage in any way. So a change in Maine's laws or definition of marriage places no requirements on local districts regarding whether or how they teach about marriage. Such curriculum decisions are strictly local. Before or after passage of the gay marriage law a district could choose to teach about marriage or not, and to teach about it in any way it deemed appropriate. It simply is not governed by state education law.

But Schubert/Flint seems to be phoning it in a bit. They don't seem to realize what a far right wacko they picked to be in their ad.

Charla Bansley is a high school teacher at a private Christian school, not an elementary public school teacher as they are implying in the ad. And the leader of the Maine Chapter of Concerned Women of America, which is a hard-right nut-job org (anti-gay, anti-abortion, pro-religion in schools, anti-porn, and anti-UN, yes they hate the United Nations). And she is a teabagger. And tried to get a student expelled for writing a pro-marriage equality letter to the editor as part of a class project.

And she thinks gays are psychotic and deviants. From a speech she gave at a Stand for Marriage Maine rally recently. Louise has much more over at the Blend.

Public display of psychosis and we have dealt with it by redefining decency down so as to explain away and make normal what a more civilized, and ordered, and healthy society would label deviant and the result has been a stunning failure.

This woman is a walking opportunity for opposition research and should be fodder for a while. Her values are not Maine values.

Fight back against this nasty. Fight back against fundie lies. Fight for love and marriage.

Give till it hurts, because if they win, there will be pain for Maine LGBT families.

I thought there were laws that prohibited lying in advertisements. Where are the cops when we need them?

the Maine commission that deals with campaign regulation could weigh in, but it's unlikely.

If it pisses you off, contribute to the No on 1 campaign so they can fight back on this lies on the new Blue America ActBlue page.

If there were truth in political advertising laws and they were enforced - the republican's wouldn't be able to open their mouth's, and these conservative bullshit artists would be out of business.

I have often wondered why good people have not sued these lying bastards for libel, and defamation.

I swear, these anti gay marriage people remind me of someone trying to convince the world that Santa Claus is really a man who flys in a sleigh with deers pulling it through the sky. Even though what they say has no facts of any kind and nothing to back it up, they just keep screaming danger where none exist.

Here is a fact: a significant portion of the population does believe in Santa Claus. Never mind that they are children under 10 and that their parents foisted this untruth on them.

I sometimes think those who speak out the loudest against gay marriage are the very ones who envy gay people who come out of the closet. I mean seriously, why the hell would they care which people marry which? It just makes no sense. What are they afraid of, gay people having better sex than they have? Are they afraid of happy gay people?

The fact that so many of the homophobes spend more time hating the gays than they do having sex with their mate.

I mean, really! How did we all miss this before?

Because we believe that the U.S. has been blessed beyond belief and we believe that God, you know, the guy whose name is on all of our money? In our national documents? Whose foundations we decreed the credit laws and other morays of this country? Yeah, that guy. Whether you like it or not, our foundation is of the Judeo-Christian ethic. While our country has NO right to impose a religion on you or a belief, the religious and non-religious alike have a RIGHT (just as much as you do) to defend the long-held tradition of marriage. Where are the boundaries after this? Can I begin petitioning the government to allow legal marriage between myself and my cousin? That's still against the law here. How about my uncle? Why is that wrong? Why is anything wrong? Why is anything right? This marriage amendment changes everything. THAT is why we are fighting.

The tone in these ads is so creepily familiar. I was born into and raised in an ultra-conservative Christian sect. It even had its own school system, so I got indoctrinated morning, noon, and night, i.e. at church, at home, and at school, for years. I've never known a bigger bunch of whining Nazi control freaks in my life. So this fear-mongering bull@%#t really disgusts me.

These ads display the same attitude I was poisoned with. It seems to be standard operating procedure of the Christian Right. Fear, denial, and outright lying rule the day. "All in the name of Christ". And they have the gall to say they're acting out of "Christian love", or some such nonsense. But what it's really all about is exclusion, hate, and control. Judgmental bastards.

I know there are Christians out there who are good, kind, decent people, but unfortunately they're the ones you don't hear from.

And, since the biblical Jesus was a 'single' man at 33, in a culture where early marriage was the norm, and then he gathered a dozen other men to follow him around for a while, who's to say there wasn't something going on there?? #;)

According to historical records, dead sea scrolls, written accounts, etc. Jesus knew he was going to die and he had a mission to accomplish. Why would he bring a wife and a family into the picture? miserable. Just celebrated 21 years with my wonderful husband. Maybe I'm just lucky? I really do wish that everyone could enjoy what we do. He's truly my friend with benefits. I see lots of problems when people are hospitalized and they can't make decisions for a significant other (unless they've prepared ahead of time)and a relative comes in and may or may not be amenable to the situation. We should all be able to love whom we want and to make it official/recognized if that's desired.

As is anybody who can find someone to spend the rest of their lives with. We're just poking fun at the institution of marriage. For my part, I joke basically because a marriage is a private thing in first place. I just don't see why these Bibtards even care (beyond the obvious that they are miserable shits). I don't see how one person's "straight" marriage effects another's straight marriage, so how a gay marriage hurts straight's is beyond me.

Bonkers, I had a patient (I'm an ICU nurse) ask me about Prop 8 and I asked him how long he'd been married. He told me 52 years. I then asked him how two men or women wanting what he had threatened what he had and he kind of smiled and chuckled and said, "you know, it doesn't."

My husband and I were actually introduced by two gay friends and I would love for those two men to be able to solidify their relationships if that's what they wanted (they aren't together, but are good friends).

By the way, gay weddings are the best. Most fun, best parties, really good open bar, etc. Nothing better than a gay wedding.

Are you married to my husband too? We've been married a couple more years than you have but it sounds like we might be married to the same guy. It's nice to know that you will be able to spend the rest of your life with someone who is your best friend, makes you laugh and makes all of life just a little bit nicer, isn't it?

Amen!! I married him because I thought he was fun and cute and we always had a good time. Rarely, if ever, fight. Still like each other and have things to talk about. We actually had a server ask us if we were on a date recently because we were having such a lively conversation.

Another point about the group "Concerned Women for America" is that it seems to be run by men. I can't tell you the number of times I've seen their spokesperson and it was a guy. Not officially perhaps - but it does seem odd.

Oh, that's right, because they have no valid arguments or reasons to support their unhinged positions on marriage equality- or many other issues for that matter.

Ms Bansley is a teacher at a Christian School affiliated with Calvary Chapel near Bangor. They're a branch of Calvary Chapel, Cosa Mesa, CA, which was very active in defeating gay marriage in California earlier this year. There are other Calvary Chapels in central Maine and one in Portland....watch 'em carefully...

Were so worried about protecting marriage, why don't they start up more marriage counseling programs and trying to cut down the divorce rate instead of their stupid jihad against gay people? Oh wait...

yes, this ad is a little campy but they are simply trying to maintain marriage as the U.S. has traditionally and historically known it. People are attempting to redefine marriage for what? And for the record, it is clearly known that divorce, step parenting and all the other manipulatives of marriage have wreaked havoc on our society. Yes, tell me that our society is healthier now than it's ever been, and you better cite some serious statistics. The increase in divorce, child abuse, killings, hate crimes, lawlessness, and infidelity is higher than ever. homosexual marriage is against our foundation as a country. We have the Netherlands for these types of things. I am American and I will fight it. I am not "homophobic" but I believe marriage is between a man and a woman.
