How I missed the 2 million man teabagging flash mob today

I apparently missed the largest flash mob in American history today, and it took place just a few blocks from my house. Michelle Malkin and the redstaters have been abuzz about how there were more than two million people marching on Washington today, (that would make it bigger than even the inauguration) but all anyone who wasn't a right-winger saw today was 30,000 to 60,000 right-wingers bused in from around the country.
Here's what the organizers themselves told us to expect. Dick Armey told the right-wing Newsmax that they're generating hundreds of responses in interest to the 9/12 March. The tea party patriots told us that they were expecting as many as one million to turn out and that they had permits for a one million man march on Washington.
After reading breathlessly on the twitter feeds of several right-wingers that millions of people were descending on the capital, Michelle Malkin on her blog estimated two million people. I went up to take pictures of crazy signs, of which there were many, many, many, many samples.
Now, there were real people at the rally. At certain points organizers for different county Republican parties would use a bullhorn to try to round up their members back to the buses for the trip back to Pennsylvania and Virginia. But one would think that after six months of organizing by Fox News and local Republican parties, the 9/12 protests could get more than thirty to sixty thousand people to come out to D.C. After all, there's apparently a groundswell of anger at the President. If nothing else, there's got to be more than 30,000 Republicans who live around the DC area.
I wanted to provide some perspective about the difference between thirty thousand people and one million people. For reference, the teabaggers were mostly in front of the Capitol and around the Capitol's reflecting pool. For anyone not familiar with DC, they were directly to the east of 3rd Street in Washington.
For reference, I crossed 3rd Street and took a picture facing west from the Capitol at the Washington Monument, similar to some of the crowd shots we'd seen after the inauguration. Here's the difference between the teabaggers' protest today vs. President Obama's inaguration crowd, which included anywhere from 1 million to 1.5 million people. So, what happened to all that grassroots anger?

that there were 10 billion people there. Yep. That's what I heard. And I heard that most of them raped and murdered a woman back in 1992. That's just what I heard...
Confirmed.
No one has denied it yet.
that the authorities couldn't cope. It was a complete breakdown of society. There was widespread looting and indiscriminate raping. Those who who huddled for shelter in the local sports arenas were preyed upon by gangs of thugs and forcibly teabagged.
They must have used a spaceship to fly them in from another planet, because, honestly, I don't know where these people come from!
I wish they'd go back there. I wish they'd stay there, and I wish they'd spend the rest of their pathetic lives quietly watching reruns of Gilligan's Island and The Brady Bunch.
They come from a trailer park in Barstow. Has anyone denied it? No. I rest my case.

and having been a participant in the first march on Washington to protest Dubya's illegal invasion of a sovereign nation, I can tell you two things: 1) the crowd at our protest more closely resembled the crowd at Obama's inauguration, despite the M$M's efforts to misrepresent our numbers; and 2) the 'crowd' at Beck's contrived 912 event wouldn't have put even a small bump in the number of visitors DC experiences every day.
There were more people at the Michigan game yesterday than protesting in DC. Speaks volumes doesn't it?
...but what a great new word you coined! Comaprison. Coma prison. Very descriptive. Some of these people are in the prison of their self-induced coma. Just totally out of touch with reality and voluntarily asleep and dreaming.

Because the media is in bed with the right wing wackos. My local media ran the story as it's 2nd story with less then a hundred people at the state Capitol. MAIN STREET MEDIA SUCK. AND THEY KNOW IT.
...showed some DC protesters. But I could clearly see the empty street behind them.

why would any REAL news outlet, give any attention or credo to the white southern racist mobs, as a legitimate movement. they gave this side show, [as usual] the same weight as the massive turnout yesterday for the pres. an open no invitation first come town hall.... a small handful of the reichwing tried to shout the pres down, but the crowd wasn't having it. the crowd drove the energy for the pres, the pres was taken aback by the huge crowd loving him....... great town hall, i hope the pres will keep on doing this until the vote in congress....
we are the majority now, not the reichwing. let foxnutz and inbred's, stew in there own bile...........................

That's because you didn't take an aerial photo like the Obama picture. All that grass is in the way of the protesters. Typical liberal media.

geez. these images are hilarious.
You didn't look at all retarded when you were protesting the killing of innocent people.
These people, even without their signs, would still look retarded because they are protesting that their taxes might go up, their "freedoms" might go away, and they don't want to help their fellow Americans by reforming health care.

After the local reports of what I heard were 60,000 to 70,000 people, Mike Kibbe, president of freedomworks, claimed that "ABC" said there were 1 million to 1.5 million people. Then malkin said there were 2 million.
ABC has denounced that rumor (I mean lie). They say they did NOT report 1 to 1.5 million.
http://abcnews.go.com/Politics/protest-crowd-...
Further, there was another event on the D.C. Mall this weekend, the Black Family Reunion Celebration. Although I saw few people of color in the pan shots, I'd bet that the people at the Black Family Reunion Celebration were included in any overhead shots that teabaggers are using. I'm curious how many people were at this event....I bet there were a large number, especially considering the large African American population in DC and surroundings.
http://www.ncnw.org/events/reunion.htm
According to this site, 500,000 people attend the Black Family Reunion Event every year.
I wonder how many of these numbers were included in the teabag numbers?
http://www.whatsonwhen.com/sisp/index.htm?fx=...
It wasn't a half-million there, either. The crowd was smaller at the Reunion, but it also didn't receive a fraction of the hype that the Beck march did. It was very, very well attended. I'd estimate probably 15,000 people were there. Interestingly, there was almost no police presence at the Reunion. There was a ton at the Beck rally.

It is getting beyond annoying how a couple thousand wingnuts with poorly constructed signs are getting major media attention. Even though the messages they spew have been proven to be untrue. Yet, Iraq war protestors during the Bush years were never considered legitimate or given major media attention(even though they were right)...until it was too late and Dubya was re-elected.

Well, isn't this proof that it was a Real Grassroots Event, instead of Astroturf?
How much shite was produced by the wingnuts and teabaggers on that forgettable day in Washington.
MSNBC like others in the MSM, are actively inflating the event, and portraying Obama as under siege from patriots and viciously fighting back. Its 'shroom' time in the MSM at the moment.
It's for that reason that any opposition or conflict, no matter how small or trivial, will receive coverage way beyond what is deserved.
There's no hope remaining.
ABC says that
These people cannot tell the truth.
I've lived in the DC area my entire life, and I can tell you this crowd didn't crack the 50,000 marker by a long shot. I've seen bigger crowds at DC United soccer games than Beck put together. Redskins games at RFK drew 55,000, and this rally didn't come close to that. Metro was still usable, roads were drivable, and you could walk around the sidewalks with ease. I was down there most of the day, and had no problem getting around. A crowd of even half a million makes DC almost unnavigable. A crowd of about 30,000 to 40,000 is just an inconvenience, and that's what this rally was.
Having been in the middle of this nonsense most of the day, I can attest that this was an angry, scared, racists, nasty crowd with no positive agenda. The most common signs had to do with tyranny, socialism/fascism/communism (which apparently are all the same thing to these dimwits), and racists signs about the President.
The real fun of the day was the National Black Family Reunion, on the other side of the mall. THEY were having a good time!
Plus a large handful of ignorant racists too of course.
The amount of racism at this rally was so thick you could cut it with a knife.
I saw one, ONE person of color at the Beck rally. She was black, and her sign said, "Obama the Blood King." If you know what that means, please fill me in. Otherwise, the crowd was 99.99999% white, and damn proud of it. I've seen more diversity at Klan demonstrations in DC. And no, I'm not exaggerating.
To be fair, I think I saw two black people, including one speaker from New York.
So, that leaves 2 million minus 2.
Or is that 60,000 or 70,000 minus 2? (white people in attendance)
They also hired a later-day minstrel singer to entertain, so I guess the count could go to three. Three, out of an estimated 6.2 billion.
That's right. Everyone was there. You were there. Everyone was.
Apparently, ABC says so...
Seems like you've got a good resume together to work for Fox News.
You name call a group that's got a different opinion than yourself, same way Fox News calls left wing protesters nut jobs etc.
You deliberately misrepresent the quality of people there (by pointing out the "crazy signs"), have you even seen some of the crazy signs us left wingers have put up? I've seen plenty of Nazi comparisons, left and right, get over yourself.
You're deliberately misrepresenting the scale of the event with those two pictures. The one of the left is much further away from the crowd than the one on the right...
You behave as if the low numbers actually matter. Come on now, most of our grass roots protests during the Bush administration were far less than that even.
You act like being bused in matters, the left does the exact same thing with their PAC's.
Hell with all that in mind, I don't even know if you're deliberately misrepresenting the TIME you took the picture since you "neglected" to mention that.
I find it interesting that you think you're helping the problems in this country with your obviously biased postings. You're not part of the solution to this country's issues, you're part of the problem. In fact, reporting like this IS THE PROBLEM. You really are no different than Glenn Beck and Fox News.
As a left leaning person myself, you all on this website truly disgust me. You do this country a disservice every time you post an article.
Concern troll is concerned mean LIEbruls are being mean to wingnuts. Good grief and get a grip. The protesters are notably incoherent and generally protesting nonexistent issues (death panels, healthcare rationing, taking away their guns, etc.). There were far more than a few intemperate signs, just as at the other teabagger events and those which were not overtly crazy and violent were illiterate or incoherent (or provided by astroturf organizations). Numbers certainly do count when you are claiming to represent "the silent majority" and when you fucking lie about the numbers. Antiwar and other protests during the Bush years routinely drew over 100,000 people and got little if any press coverage.
There were plenty of hate-filled and ignorant signs yesterday. It was not just a few.
I noticed that yesterday, jim demint once again was repeating his "Waterloo" mantra.
These people simply want to get Obama out of office, no matter what.
no matter what
Or how. Which is what worries me.
Schizophonic - you're proving points we've been trying to make about the right. You showed exactly the type of reaction I'd expect from a tea bagger. Balling your fists, stomping your feet and shouting "fuck you" and running away solves nothing - just as the antics of the tea baggers will solve nothing. There's nothing constructive or adult about your actions or the irrational vitriolic responses from the tea partiers. Take a breath and a step back and present your points, throwing a temper tantrum just embarrasses you and pretty much deems you and your position irrelevant. We can go to our 5 year olds for the same type of rebuttal you provided - of course they wouldn't have gone with the curse words. C'mon, bring adult mentality to the table and you'll be taken seriously, otherwise you're written of as unable to control your emotions and also unable to debate the topic intelligibly.
NotfooledTX,
Bullshit. Commenters here and elsewhere on liberal web sites post rational, informed counterpoints to the establishment MSM lies all the time. Then some fool like bfpierce shows up once a year to insult one of us for showing some emotion.
I second Schizophonic's retort. People at my work challenge me all the time with personal characterizations and racist, incoherent RW talking points. I tell them what I'll tell you. Anytime you want to have a sit down rational debate on any social, religious, political or economic issue, I'm more than ready. But don't enable some moron who comes here once in a blue moon to foist some holier than thou attitude or compare us to the idiots who don't understand the concept of critical thinking.

You think Beck has the right to spew his vitriol and you seem to think people here don't have the same right of Freedom of Speech.
Left leaning?
doubt it.
What is your conceptual, continuity?
Well technically, if you count "slightly to the left of Dr. Mengele", as the teabaggers do, as "left leaning.
bfpierce,
Your photo comparison doesn't hold water. Even at the differing distances it is clear that the crowd sizes were vastly different. Your arguement is insulting to anyone with their vision intact.
As to bussing in, the anti war protesters and the other progressive grassroots members organized their own busses. They do not rely on corporate sponsorship to provide transportation.
Yes most of the grassroots protests were also small in numbers. That's because there were thousands of them around the country during the Bush years. But when the BIG protests were organized, there were hundreds of thousands of people marching. Numbers DO matter, despite your opinion.
"Someday somebody related to some of these sufferers, these victims, these collaterally damaged souls, may try to kill you. And I have to tell you, I think you’ll have it coming." - Christopher Cooper
I'm sorry, but I was at the National Mall during the Inauguration. And...there was "no way" to take a shot with that much empty space. The angle is correct because I stood between the Capitol and the Monument. The Monument is behind the Capitol and clearly there are NO people there. If the crowd was overflowing the area you would definitely see them in that shot.
Also...there was a National Black Family Reunion on the Mall at the same time with thousands in attendance so an aerial shot wouldn't be accurate either.
The Washington Monument and the Capital are at opposite sides of the long Capitol Mall. The crowd gathered around the reflection pool in front of the Capitol.
The two pictures at the top of this page were both taken across the street from the reflection pool, pointing AWAY FROM THE CROWD.
The EMPTY shot shows that there are NO PEOPLE across the street, because there is no overflow crowd.
That's how I see it. I was there during Inauguration and the image is correct.
Too many people got mad at that post; it's obvious the guy is making a sock-puppet "liberal" (Hint: "Member for..."), so just don't give him or the rest of his kind any attention.
We can be passionate about the issues, no problem there, but getting angry at trolls is wasted energy. Their entire purpose is to piss you off for cheap laughs.
is simply silly. But hey Michelle I'll say this: you lie! Even with doctored images, which is what you'll be using to 'prove' it, you won't even get close to 2 million. that would have to be some amazing doctoring of images. ill bet what theyll use will be images from past marches or gatherings and pass them off as their own. oh you know theyll try and do that. but again: they lie!
I mentioned this elsewhere....but where did those 2 million people stay? I wonder if anyone can find out hotel occupancy rates for this weekend?
cut poor widdle Michelle a break! Obviously, she is math illiterate! And, we all know we don't have enough fingers and toes to count to two million!

Subject: 9-11
quote:
"Beck,
I just got home after a nice afternoon outside. I turned on my computer to check any emails I might have received.
When my home page came up, what do I see but a picture of a teabagger holding a poster of Nancy Pelosi, alongside of which is the word “Nazi.”
You know, Herr Goebbels, it’s sad; it is really a shame that you have poisoned the memory of 9-11, its victims, and the families of those victims. You must really still hate those 9-11 family victims you talked about a few years ago. How could a day of national remembrance and sorrow turn into a day of hatred in 24 hours?
I didn’t know any 9-11 victims personally, but I have a brother who knew someone in one of the towers. My brother has never said anything about it. I also have a brother who lives in Manhattan and a sister who lives in the D.C. area and works at the National Gallery. I was working in Europe on 9-11, and I have vivid memories of being concerned about my brother and sister, as well as siblings in Chicago, wondering if it might also be attacked.
Fortunately, so far, that picture of the ugly teabagger is the only one I have seen today. I haven’t seen anything else of your nonsense.
Instead, I spent the past few hours with thousands of normal, happy, sane people at the St. Louis Art Fair. Those people included my parents and one of my brothers. That was much more pleasant than watching a bunch of insane people filled with anger, hatred, and rage at a black man.
Oh, and I even saw some “degenerate” art at that Fair. I was really wanting to ask if the painter and photographers if they were Commies, but I was too afraid they might track me down and take away my “freedoms.”
I think I honored the memory of 9-11 much better than you did, with a sense of peace, not a sense of hatred towards your fellow Americans."

Thank you, Breakspear.
These people infuriate me to no end. My parents raised 8 kids and taught us not to hate anyone, but that's very hard right now to do.

But I think Reynolds v the United States (1879), is applicable to the point.

You mean that the Scotts and Welsh are "decent?"
I'm of Irish descent, so I don't know about that!
Unfortunately, the likes of oreilly and insannity are also of Irish descent!
I'm no longer religious, so Reynolds vs the United States no longer applies to me.
I still haven't woken up today.
And that's Scots. (Technically, I'm of Pictish/Celtic descent.)
Diabolus est Deus Inversus
Sorry, YSB. Hope I didn't offend you and your heritage!
Actually Reynolds v the United States has relevancy for everyone, in that if the government passes a law, one can't claim an exception based on one's own belief, since the government doesn't care what you believe, but how you act upon it.
This could actually possibly serve as a precedent in the trial of Dr. George Miller's murderer.

Actually, that murderer and his lawyer are considering a "justifiable homicide" defense, so Reynolds could serve as a precedent....but I'm not a lawyer.

"In 1922 Lord Rothermere acquired control of the Daily Mail newspaper and to this date, Rothermere's descendants continue to control the Daily Mail and General Trust. Rothermere and the Mail were editorially sympathetic to Oswald Mosley and the British Union of Fascists and he wrote an article, "Hurrah for the Blackshirts", in January 1934, praising Mosley for his "sound, commonsense, Conservative doctrine". Rothermere visited and corresponded with Hitler. On 1 October 1938, Rothermere sent Hitler a telegram in support of Germany's invasion of the Sudetenland, and expressing the hope that 'Adolf the Great' would become a popular figure in Britain. Secret British government papers released in 2005 show that Rothermere wrote to Adolf Hitler congratulating him for the annexation of Czechoslovakia in 1938, and encouraged him to march into Romania. Rothermere also purchased estates in Hungary in case Britain should fall to a Soviet invasion. There is a memorial to Rothermere in Budapest. To this date Rothermere's descendants continue to control the Daily Mail and General Trust."

Isn't C-Span like CNN owned by Time Warner?
They might have been liberal when Ted Turner owned them, but they've been sold to a business group, that seems intent to make CNN faux-lite, and continuously use false-equivalencies to advance their stories instead of using something like the Fairness Doctrine.

and are showing up at these 'corporate-funded' tea-parties. YOU and YOUR 'image' are being 'used' to promote EVERY 'KKK-Aryan-Nation wanna-be 'new-members campaign', including the RePUBICan Party.
The GOP NEEDS numbers and they don't care WHERE they come from.
They have been 'boiled down' to the '$hit for brains' who have been 'hannitized'....

How does Glenn Beck represent these things? How does Van Jones not? They sound like good, resonable things to adhere to, but that is what makes them manipulative. It's easy to overlook the pure cynicism being used by the powers that be to rally people against their own best interests.
Doesn't this conflict with their Thomas Paine worship?
"every cloud is silver liney"
"Of all the tyrannies that affect mankind, tyranny in religion is the worst." -Thomas Paine
"It is not a God, just and good, but a devil, under the name of God, that the Bible describes." -Thomas Paine"
They were saying 10K or more would be at the tea party in my town, but it was more like 2-2.5k. I cut through it on my bike ride just to get a feel for the atmosphere and sense of this writhing mass of delusion and credulity. Some guy named Roger Stone gave the local rag my favorite quote...
“The elite said this wouldn’t happen. They said that America was going to just shuffle off to Socialism like Europe did and that we’d go willingly. That’s not happening here today and it’s not happening across America,” Stone said.
Of course the newspaper reporter could have asked "What elite?" or "Who exactly is saying this?" but didn't.
"every cloud is silver liney"
Malkin et al may have overstated the number of right-wingers demonstrating, but thirty to sixty thousand people is still a frighteningly large number for such malevolent people. It's also maddening that there was so much mainstream media coverage of it when even larger anti-war and progressive demonstrations are completely ignored by the corporate news.
...maybe more.

kombiz photo is a little bit misleading...

That there was more going on there. The the National Black Family Reunion was going on. Notice how the pan shot of the crowd comes to focus on the smaller of the 3 sections of people (pans stage left) and we focus in on "the protest".
I was in downtown Minneapolis with 150,000 other people to see Smashing Pumpkins play live for free, as well as in Portland (stuck on the MAX for literally hours) during the protests here in the early 2K's. The whole crowd shown doesn't even look to be half as big as either of those events.
There's no "there" there. Sorry, but more people showed up in Seattle to protest last weekend (or the one before) and got completely ignored by the MSM, even in their home media.
It's not on TV cuz it's big, but because it's manufactured by those who "report" the news.
I'll agree with you that the photo up top is misleading, because the protest didn't take place on the National Mall. But there weren't 500,000 people there on those not-as-broad-as-the-mall streets.
And I don't know if you read it above, but there was an annual event- the Black Family Reunion Event, that draws approximately 500,000 every year- on part of the Mall. So don't add those people to your totals, you Paul-supporting teabagger.
Don't try to confuse the issue with half-truths and gorilla dust.
Even when they marched there were blocks and blocks of people, but during the inauguration there were miles and miles of people.
I don't understand what you mean by the protest didn't take place on the Mall. They definitely had a platform, speakers and entertainment on the mall.
The photo isn't misleading. I was there for the Inauguration and there is no way they could have captured that much empty space. The image is taken from 3rd street to the Monument. That's a fairly large space and clearly there are NO people in that area. Most people were concentrated at the Capitol in front. Sooo...the Monument shot is in the back and the Mall is 90% empty back there. I haven't seen one post on the internet of someone who lives in the area that said there were even one million people or close to that. They all have the same estimate.
political rallies on both sides. After all so many of us are unemployed there should be a lot of free time for it.
You weren't counting the Spermatazoan-Americans being carried in jars!!
until I saw that picture. It put a HUGE smile on my face.
Remember, the people with brains are still the majority in this country.
NOBODY 2012
Picture can replace a thousand words. The image is correct. I was at that Mall during the inauguration
For basis of comparison, it's worth noting that Washington DC's gay pride festival is estimated to have 150-200,000 attendees annually.
Anyone remember the Drug Addict Blimpbaugh back on the Million man March, only few hundred thousand, well you Racist Nazi Christian (RNC),and Goofy Opposition Party as well as the Clowns Morons and Functional Illiterate on the side of NO what do you have to say about this FAILURE, just like your PARTY. Insignificant and Irrelevant.
was all I could spare to watch the live coverage of this event yesterday on CNN. A woman was hollering behind a podium about Medi-Care paying for translators for patients. The twist in her voice betrayed the message she was sending between the lines: "paying for translators" meaning "other than Whites".
In all fairness, I attended a peace march/rally in L.A. in March attended by about 1,000. Many of the speakers spoke with as much fire and passion as that one woman did yesterday. We liberals can match the passion note for note, but I heard those speaking from a place of love in March.
Yesterday, all I heard was the voice of fear, which dissipated the moment i changed the channel.
