I’m of two minds about taking up this theme, since stating what ought to be obvious but is nevertheless unpleasant and inconvenient is apt to get one branded as lunatic fringe.

A must see documentary from Adam Curtis after the work of Edward Bernays, the nephew of Sigmund Freud and architect of American Corporate Propaganda. After the Nazi's gave the term 'propaganda' a bad name the phrase became 'Public Relations' or PR for short. They have been high jacking the language every since.

Any Chamber of Commerce, is nothing but a front for a group of anti-worker serial killers, sociopath's, and evil Dick Cheney clones! They are the absolute worst thing a small business owner could support.

Who is going to purchase your product and make your small enterprise grow, when the middle class is wiped-out? Which is the only pupose and goal of the CoC.

So last night on Colbert, his guest was a reporter who dug up and re-investigated murders from the '60s of civil rights workers in south who for one reason or another were never prosecuted. Most of the civil rights workers were trying to register black voters.

And it strikes me that its the same thing with Acorn. Acorn primarily registers minority voters. And for this, they must be destroyed. So fuckin sad.

Andy K's picture

The GOP became the party of the Segregationist South a few years after the Democrats passed the Civil Rights and Voters' Rights acts.

FilthyHarry's picture

I knew the drive against acorn was motivated by their registering of minority voters. I was just struck by the stark reminder. They were killing minority registrars then, they're still trying now.

Til I saw the Colbert piece I didn't connect the events as being fundamentally the same.

of a connection either. Now that I do, the more things change, the more they stay the same... *sigh*

that got killed in Kentucky, in one of the most horrific ways imaginable I may add. It happened right after Bachmann burped her fatwa against the census (which incidentally it is one of the few things cited as mandatory by the constitution).

Funny how we never got to hear much about that, or any of the other "unrelated" crimes by right wing extremists.

Yet all sorts of unfounded accusations about ACORN manage to make it to the news no problem.

Abbybwood's picture

It's "still under investigation"...

And now they've decided that they will only send out census workers in PAIRS.

Problem solved.

In the early '70s it came into existence as the Arkansas Community Organizations for Reform Now. It spread to Texas and South Dakota in '75. Not a ton of black folks in South Dakota. Lots of poor people, though, especially on the reservations (though the ranks of the poor aren't limited to Native Americans). I wonder if the asshole filmmaker/"pimp" went to the South Dakota or Idaho offices at all to play his little gotcha games....

The right-wing reaction to ACORN disgusts me for a lot of reasons, but that they put a black face on an organization that lobbies for and caters to poor people - no matter what color- is what disgusts me the most, because they know that they'll be more effective when they demonize ACORN by implying that it's an organization by and for black people. Divide and conquer strategies work, huh?

Meet the 42 lucky people who got to see the secret copyright treaty

ACTA (The Anti-Counterfeiting Trade Agreement): The secret copyright treaty that would criminalize just about all communication on the internet.

This is some seriously scary shit. It would make legal netwide wiretapping of internet communications, invasive searches of computer hardware, as well as stiff penalties for infringement. "Infringement" includes the copying and dissemination of ANY copyrighted material, including quotes more than five or six words in length. That means things like Neil Armstrong's first words on the moon, the song "Happy Birthday" - hell, anything that might at any time have fallen under some copyright whether it's generally known or not.

The scariest thing about this is the secrecy of it all. The few people who've been allowed to see the Act have had to sign secrecy oaths in order to do so. The Obama administration denied a Freedom of Information Act request for it on the grounds that it is a matter of "national security."

I hope C&L is going to do something on this. If there were ever an issue that ought to be blown open across the net, it would be this one.

It was a Saturday evening post(pun intended), and that was the topic. It was in May or June, iirc.

BTW, I know what an Open Thread is. I'm credited with writing at least one at this site, and I've got more than a few Late Night Music Club posts under my belt, too. :D

So

Because somebody posted this a while back, we can't talk about it anymore? This topic has been resolved and is no longer valid? Is that what you're saying? Because I haven't heard any such thing.

That blog post at Boing Boing went up two days ago. I'd say it's still a valid topic for discussion, yes?

Go back up-thread and take a gander at your header:

Anybody here at C&L on top of this?

I was pointing out that, yes indeed, someone here at C&L was on top of this. Never meant to imply that I didn't think it worthy of discussion.

curtilingus's picture

So lets hear some discussin, dammit!

Intellectual property sucks and needs to be outlawed along with corporate personhood.

Unless you invent something that causes a physical transformation, there should be no intellectual property. I wouldn't have said this ten years ago, but Intellectual property has been abused. This copyright treaty only serves to further criminalize open sharing of the world's intellect, and it is fucked.

Andy K's picture

I do think artists, writers, songwriters, filmmakers, etc., deserve some protection. What chafes me is like when an entity like NBC claims ownership over segments created by Letterman and his staff. Or when Flo & Eddie sue De La Soul for a short sample of one of their works to create a wholly different thing....I'm sure i can think of a few more things, but it's after 2AM here, and I'm getting a wee bit tired.

Edwin's picture

Should I pay someone royalties every time I make a "happy face" :), or sing happy birthday? I didn't invent/create either.

MsJoanne (below) I see your point too. This is something that needs review.

far left loon >.<

MsJoanne's picture

Intellectual property sucks? No fucking way! I spend five or 10 months writing something and you think my efforts should go into the public domain? Again, no fucking way! That's my livelihood. You may not see value in it because I didn't invent something, well let me tell you, I invented that piece of work and that IS my intellectual property!

Tax the Rich's picture

Many years ago I was an aspiring musician and half of a songwriting team. We spent many hours everyday writing, playing, and recording our music. We had some interest from a few agents, but alas, it wasn't meant to be.

However, if we would have gotten a contract for any of our songs, I would like to know that our work, effort and investment (which was huge) would have been protected.

If I were a psychopath, I would join the republican party, and get in on the gravy train taking the Teabircher morons to the cleaners.

curtilingus's picture

I hear you msjoanne, but hear me out.

I'm a musician too who one day hoped to make money from his creations. But I saw how little proceeds went to the creators and how much went to distributors, managers, ticketmaster, etc.

We now have a different system of distribution called the internet. An artist can post their album online and even if 9 people take it for free, one of those ten may pay for it. This is happening with established artists like radiohead, nine inch nails, but it can happen for rising artists as well.

curtilingus's picture

About a year ago I downloaded a torrent with over 5000 songs. These were 78 rpm recordings digitized to mp3's and they were ALL from before the 50's, some as far back as 1900. I can't tell you how much I've enjoyed these songs and how much they have broadened my horizons as a musician.

Many of these are out of print and there is no method (or effort) for distribution for them other than the internet. Do you think these should remain under lock and key unheard to new generations indefinitely? Do you think the artists that wrote these songs would want their songs to remain unheard unless a corporate entity which owned the rights was compensated enough? (you can imagine what their compensation was back then)

curtilingus's picture

The Greatful Dead saw their music as something to be shared with the masses. They encouraged people to record and distribute tapes and they became one of the most popular, profitable bands of all time.

I thought you were a writer MsJoanne. What did you invent?

curtilingus's picture

Say that we had taken MsJoanne's approach (like I said I felt the same way 10 years ago)to intellectual property hundreds of years ago when the printing press was invented. This would give people the ability to distribute and consume information in large quantities, that the people could then use and re-distribute as they pleased.

But the Vatican had most of the books and didn't like the notion of sharing knowledge unless it was in a place and message of the church's choosing.

Edwin's picture

You are not paying intellectual property rights when you take a book from the library, read it through, and return it. Maybe we should be paying $21.95 to take a book out?

far left loon >.<

curtilingus's picture
p:

Yes that's right. I had a college professor who whined to our class that when we bought his book used, he did not receive royalties, implying we should buy new every time.

Aside from the fact it is unethical to make a textbook you authored the core, required book of the class.

Boy, under the Accomplishments section, they sure do love them some African Americans, don't they?

I also noticed under the accomplishment of Operation Iraqi Freedom, it states the following:

After Hussein violated and ignored many United Nations resolutions regarding Iraq's failure to comply with disarmament and cease-fire terms from the first Gulf War, Congress authorized Republican President George W. Bush to use force to hold Hussein accountable.

Ummm..guys...I thought it has been established that Saddam did indeed disarm. That's why there were no WMDs found.

Oh...and there are no accomplishments listed after 2004. Indeed, the only major accomplishments by Republicans during Dubya's first term are tax cuts (credited for job and economic growth) and starting the War on Terror.

Which pretty much confirms what I've been saying for years: if not for the War on Terror, Bush would have been a one-termer.

Bad Eye's picture

Via the new GOP web site, for them to even remotely suggest that the GOP of yesteryear even comes close to the GOP of today is, at the very least, comical.

a corrupt Supreme Court and Diebold. Both still exist today.
News Flash: John Sweeney, the former DC politician who ran the physical violence in Florida for Bush Co. during the attempted recount there in the 2000 election (at least until SCOTUS stopped it by appointing Bush president) has lost his driver's license for 18 months due to multiple DWI's in a relatively short period of time. He is still facing even more charges. His wife, whom he beat, has dumped him. Hey, John. Put on your big boy panties and do your time, you whiny bastard. I do hope there is a big Bubba waiting for you in prison. In NYS, one can only serve a year in a county jail, so here's hoping he gets no special treatment and has to go to an actual prison.

What a crazy idea! Giving the poor legal representation. Obama thinks he can play good cop, bad cop with Sudan. Are your college football players learning? Sheriff Joe returns in a "limited" capacity. Obama is forced to argue he really is doing a heckuva job for New Orleans' recovery. BofA loses more money, while the AP blames it on delinquent consumers. Military commanders try to limit what reporters can cover in Afghanistan. Obama would rather work with Dubya's dad to promote community service than the son. Barry wags his finger at the banks for being against reform.

Now is the time for “firm rules of the road so that banks can’t game the system and the financial crisis on Wall Street doesn’t end up hurting folks on Main Street,” Obama said last night at a Democratic Party fundraiser in San Francisco.

Um, you're a little late on that, dude. The numbers on deficits. Another rich con gets a bust. Ironic that he got nailed by a wiretap. Now maybe we'll see big business lobby against the Patriot Act?

dnyknot's picture

should listen to the US why ? remind me again , im so tired of HRC and BO already , the US has no moral high ground none . Life is groovy if your rich and in power . The US should just STFU , untill we can take care of our own , instead of being the largest arms dealer in the world . BO you are a big time disappointment to millions , grow a spine end the wars , you want peace how about food , medical , housing , heres a clue , YA DONT BRING THOSE IN WITH DRONE'S .
And HRC shooting her big mouth off about Iran is insane , or telling Russia what to do , bottom line these are your choices and the future and history will judge you . As of now dont count on my vote in 2012 as i'd rather vote repug at least then i would know who is stabbing me in the back .

...people don't listen any more. I mention America (overseas and in Canada) and the room has a visible sigh... whatever (who cares???) I'd say the general concensus on America is a misguided, corrupt, fallible and dishonest nation. I get the same response from some Americans too.

To the world at large it appears America is going down the tubes.

Maybe you will start breaking up, like that Russian guy said.

I thought it was just stupid by design, You know like all things republican. Am I exaggerating? Think about it. In the past thirty years which party has had more influence, or the ability to influence more people? Who had had more influence on wall street, the K street project, the explosion of lobbyests, the buying up of all the tv, radio, and newspapers. Almost totally conservative in ownership in almost every way. They have ripped apart the economy under perfect control. Only the greed needs to be attended all things else should be cast aside.
republicanism/conservatism is a mental illness. 25% of America could use some serious hospital time and some heavy drugs!
