The pure racist hatred John McCain and Sarah Palin inspire at their political rallies is starting to drive some of their frothing supporters over the edge. You can't see this man's hood, but rest assured, he's wearing it on the inside. These people are so driven by blind hatred that they are no longer able to hide or control it. Lot owner Tim Henderson had this to say:
“I don’t know how many ways you can interpret it. If you’re an Obama supporter, you’ve got an Obama sticker on your car, you’re not welcome to park here,” says Henderson.

Depends on the local ordinances of course, but a business owner has the right to refuse any person service for any reason (short of a provable racist bias) because his business is a private organization. So if he wants to be a dick he's perfectly welcome to be a dick and perfectly welcome to take the loss of business that will result from it.

Since he is obviously and flagrantly discriminating against people, he ought to lose that contract. Tuesday. The government offices should be open. I'm sure that there is other land available for parking and other business owners in this economic climate who'd be quite happy to take the government's money.

My parents are both depression-era, segregation-era Louisianians; Dad is 81 and Mom is 75. Both are Progressive Democrats, both are Catholic, both are pro-choice, and both are die-hard Obama supporters. I just wish more of their friends were (some are, but too many are not.) I hate that I have to wish for my parents' generation to die off so that we can hope to have a less-racist electorate, but I hate even more that so many people I know (work with) who are my age or younger are even more racist than the pre-Civil Rights generation.

I look at my aunts and uncles, born anywhere from 1926 to 1939, and listen to their overt and not so overt racism and have to believe that a good share of this racism is a generational matter. It'll live on in some measure with their descendants, but not to such a high degree. (I hope.)
There was one biracial family in my tiny VT town when I was growing up (early 80s) - it wasn't odd, they weren't considered "other." If there was any tension, I never noticed it, probably because when I was 7 and 8, I mooned over the youngest boy in the family. Good way to get over color - schoolgirl crushes! when I read the article it stated that the guy explicitly stated that he wasn't keeping anyone from parking there, that it was a humorous thing. He said something to the effect of "I'll smile and ask them "can't you read? See the sign" but that he wouldn't actually keep anyone from parking there.

My wife & I worked an Obama table at the local farmers market this morning. We are 30-40s white professionals. She bravely, but without other options, stayed with him. She said he was coldly polite to her during her treatment, which luckily didn't require long-term visits. Of course, that was before the culture of blatant right-wing meanness arose in the 80s and 90s. I'd be afraid to go to someone like that today.
I saw a few things like this when Cindy Sheehan and hundreds of others were gathering in front of Bush's Crawford ranch. Arbitrary blocking of roadsides and parking lots, explicit refusals to allow access for Sheehan supporters, etc. Not pretty.

... to all you social moderates thinking of voting for McCain is THESE are the lot you're casting your vote with. Anybody with an IQ over 70 who is in anyway contemplating voting for McCain should seriously think about who they want to be associated with.
With any element of change, it is resistant. This nation has been in denial about it racism. In fact, after the Bakke decision, it has been unpopular to even mention racism without being termed using the "race card."
To undo this nasty custom that is so deeply ingrained into our society, it is going to take work and time. Denial racism exist has hindered the process and the work initiated by people like Martin Luther King. If we would of stayed with the novel ideas King created, we would probably be in further down the road of tolerance.
Enter Barack Obama, he's intelligent, he's very wise, and he's half Black and half white. Suddenly, the world and this country has to face the core element of this once government sanction practice of racism because they are about to put a person of color in the White House. You know what? It feels like we have moved far enough from the 1960s when I see stories like this one.
This country will have to take on the work of change associated with what King started. On November 4th, this county must put "change" in the driver's seat and elect Obama.
