for the most part. But in her assertion that the debte is more about class than sex, she leaves out the role of manipulating religious symbols to keep the eye of the lower classes diverted to the sexual debate in order to foster ignorance of their class interests. Maybe she did that out of deference to the AME minister or is just saving it for another post. Because if, as she asserts, baby knows Mom is Marxist, the opiate of the masses must be on momma's mind.

I used to agree that the best way to improve a nation was through the liberation of women. Then I got to know the names Palin, Bachman, Malkin, Coultier, Albright, Rice... I guess women are equals to men. :)

Seriously though, My girlfriend's sister lives at home with her mother, has a one year old baby out of wedlock and can't keep a job, dad's in and out of jail and doesn't pay child support regularly - and yet she was asking for money to buy Gucci shoes for the kid. Gucci. Shoes. For a one year old.

Until we can educate our poor citizens it won't matter if we have women in power, minorities in power... We'll still just have morons and corrupt bastards running the show.

a great Texas liberal leader and one time National Women's Political Caucus President used to say something to the effect that we will know women are liberated when they have the right to elect the same unqualified women to office that white men have.

Blue Gal here:

first, thanks, Mike honey, for the linky love. My post took the better part of a day to write and my kids were home!

Absolutely, Ricky. Religion plays a role. I've blogged about that many times, and actually I mention evangelicalism by name here. Some churches directly instruct the ignorant that they are "better people" for holding their narrow worldview. James Dobson is so alarming in his political influence in the Republican Party. And even more alarming is the cynicism of the Karl Roves in that party to simply take advantage of that ignorance for political power.

Background: I have a Master's degree in Theological Studies from Harvard Divinity School (suck on that, Chris Matthews) and am the organizer of the annual Blog against Theocracy blogswarm. I consider myself a Quaker. Full disclosure I'm also on staff here at Crooks and Liars.

You might be interested in this post which puts my thoughts on motherhood in a far more personal and religious perspective.

I have also written more directly about Sarah Palin and the abortion issue, and how Democrats can reframe that issue. Thanks much for your kind comment.

Background: I chewed the wafer at the first communion after catechism class to see if the nun was lying about the blood of Jesus running from my mouth. She was, and I haven't been back. I consider myself a Quasi lucky unconfirmed Catholic.

i'm not sure if there's a 'divide' in the republican party but there's certainly a identity crisis. the (r) moved to the far right over the last 8-10 yrs. this is now a problem for them. when moderate (r)'s try to run for regional office the national media will ask them questions regarding the usual guns, same sex marriage and abortion to name the main headliners. if they appear too moderate/wishy washy the national media pounces on them. the dems. on the otherhand have used this strategy to their advantage. until the (r) invite the moderate nominees/members to the "big tent" they will NOT have the votes. this is where black and white thinking/judgement gets the gop in trouble.

in America is the "former middle class."

Great post by BG, Publius does a great job fact-checking a pernicious lie, and Sadly, No and Roy have indeed been on a roll for some time now...

Krugman sure is a clueless tool.

He wrote in some article recently that he wishes we could go back to the way things were in the 70s because incomes were more "equal" or something. The 70s? Really?

And then he wants to raise taxes in California? The place with some of the highest taxes in the country?
The problem in CA isn't that taxes are too low, it's that spending is too high and where the spending goes. Those are the problems.

the most contemptible neo-con hacks masquerading as a journalist is Robert "Truthy" Samuelson. This Michael Medved/John Stossel look-alike thinks we should raise the retirement age. Sounds good unless you're a construction worker or a waitress or a nurse or a factory worker. If we could all get jobs pushing paper around desks or writing half-baked, neo-con, pseudo-intellectual economic theories with single digit accuracy rates. Just like him.
