"Media Event". In campaign speak, that's an opportunity for a candidate to shake a few hands in front of the cameras, make a speech on some subject or the other and give the press a chance to see you. Unless you're Meg Whitman running for the governorship of California:

Press shy GOP gubernatorial candidate Meg Whitman found herself challenged by reporters today after she announced an "open press" stop in Oakland, then refused to take questions the press -- which was also barred from covering her tour of the port's Union Pacific facility.

Reporters from Bay Area media outlets -- TV, print and radio -- turned up for Whitman's advertised campaign stop in Oakland, where the former eBay CEO had announced a campaign stop and press event.

But once at the Union Pacific Railroad site, the assembled reporters were not allowed to view her tour -- and herded into a holding room instead.

Then came the news that Whitman also wouldn't take questions; reporters had been called in to "see" her make statements on "how she could be helpful as governor" on jobs and the economy, Whitman spokeswoman Sarah Pompei said.[..]

Pompei told reporters Whitman said the no press tour was a Union Pacific call -- that the company's officials did not want media coverage. (Union Pacific spokesman Aaron Hunt begs to differ. He just told us that "we planned, actually, to have press talk with Meg on the tour....we understood there would be media availability and we wanted to work with that.")

It's very possible that Whitman's handlers are nervous about her in front of the press, as her grasp on basic facts seem to be a little skewed, as this ad from California Accountability notes:

As yet, Whitman has still refused to release her taxes for public scrutiny as well, a growing concern as the election ads get progressively nastier.

Given the massive clusterf@#$ that is the state of the State of California (and the fact that not only is California the world's 8th largest economy, California taxes subsidize other states as well), having someone so clearly not-ready-for-prime-time in the Governor's office is a prescription for disaster.

Any state that would elect Arnold deserves the predictable results of such folly.

I hope the good people of California make a better choice this time around.

Meg is a loser as are the other GOP candidates (IMO)

Arnold has been a great governor and electing him was the best decision CA voters made. He has proven to be a middle-of-the-road governor who cares about the environment and cutting spending, despite a legislature determined to drive the state into debt, but since you don't even live in CA, I wouldn't expect you to know what you're talking about.

But Meg is starting to grind my nerves and clearly does not appear ready for politics the way Arnold was.

Actually, I would say the same thing about Arnold that I said about Reagan. They are great actors, they acted like governors. As far as being governors they were fucking awful. I live in California, San Diego County to be exact and things are pretty bad. I wish the damn Democrats had a better candidate than recycling Jerry Brown. Shit. But Meg Whitman is goddamn joke.

Russron@Yahoo.Com's picture

He tried the Hard Right Tact and on every one of his ballot measures, he went down in flames. Only after that but kicking, did he tact back to the center. Then he proceeded to quietly do some of what he wanted to, through the legislative process. Meanwhile, that tiny minority of Republicans in the legislature, did his bidding and held the budget hostage.

The problem is that everyone in this country has short attention spans. What's not remembered is last year's budget--let alone 2 elections ago.

We don't need the same Right Wing Trash in Meg Whitman. She's acting out from a script. This month, we see her attack Steve Poisner from the far right. "He won't protect Tax Cuts" or "He Backed Al Gore in 2000" After she spends him into oblivion, she'll do the same against Brown, while portraying herself as a "Moderate". And the Sheeple will vote for her, because her face will be on TV so much that folks will get comfortable with it. I wish I was wrong, but we're headed for more Republican pain.

enjoying that medicinal marijuana?

Arnie snuck into the governors office by back door antics, and a campaign that was only about not being "Grey Davis".

i know a lot of folks that voted for him because he was the dude from the terminator.

he is middle of the road and pro environment because of us native californians...not the other way around.

4th generation californian here, so i guess by your faulty logic I get to have a say??

Politics is ugly

When the press is treated that way, it would be funny and appropriate for all press everywhere to never, ever, ever mention that candidate's name again, under any circumstances. Or ever allow her image or words to be released to the public.

Sadly, that kind of solidarity is impossible.

Is going to be a blood bath. This Piozner fella is throwing some vicious attacks at Whitman. I'm enjoying this carnage immensely.
Meanwhile Brown just sits and lets them spend their money and tear each other apart. Good Times!

Next governor than I do. It's just fiasco after ridiculous fiasco with her.

Barack Obama: Change we can only imagine

I hope she wins simply for the entertainment value.

Vote GOP and move forward to the 18th Century.

NO, please dear lord, No. We've had enough bullshi* fuc*ing millionaire republicans running this state into the ground.

Meg and Poizner are just rich folks who think they're right. About everything.

She should sit down with the current "gübernator" and listen for a change.

in CA? If so, I will vote for her. See the single payer campaign, google California One Care. Which ever candidate supports single payer health care in CA will get my vote.

Is between the Keyboard and the Chair. So Meg promises Single Payer. It's obvious from her attacks on Posiner that she has no intention of doing that--but she'll get Mknowles's vote!

I knew someone who used the ID Ten T description, when discussing a recurring Network Problem. Until the roar of laughter, he didn't know he was on a conference call. Quietly (individually) everyone agreed that he was right. But he was talking about a Senior Vice President and...well the results we not pretty.

has Medi-Cal. If you are under the poverty level of less than approximately $29,000 a year in California, you qualify... Except Gubbnah Arnie has torn it to shreds the last 3 years.

NO optical, NO dental any longer and MediCal only pays about 1/4th of any hospital bills.

Unions have been extinct practically since 1900. Jerry Brown's chances may be slim since he has been so demonized by Saint Reagan billionaires.

slamming democrats - with a name like centrist?

Russron@Yahoo.Com's picture

Oh, yea--the problem is always on the Spending Side, despite cuts over the last few years, to Medical, Education, Roads, Local Governments, Etc. The increased Spending is Debt servicing and a lot of that is Republican based. We're still paying for the Enron fleecing and Arnold's first actions were to kill the suits against the Energy Pirates in addition to Enron--who bled us dry in 2000.

Wondering why that bus doesn't come? Well, budgets had to be cut so the drivers were fired and no new equipment was purchased.

Want roads and bridges you can drive over--pay for them! Oh no, can't double the tax on Hummers--so Arnold gets to take over.

Want services from DMV, well don't be surprised when they don't happen and DMV's closed on Friday's, because the budget had to be cut!

Want schools to educate the next generation, so this country is competitive? Pay for them! Or expect larger class sizes and grades combined and the state and country to become less competitive!

California's problem is Prop 13 and a tiny minority of Repug's who send this state further and further down the whole. Every year, we're held hostage to a tiny fraction of Repugs, who demand that the majority does it the Republican Way. Of course, spineless Democrats cave. But back to funding: How many large apartment buildings are still taxed at the rate of the 70's--because their owners are old, when newer buildings are taxed at current rates?

We can't bump up the Income Tax Rate significantly on Billionaires or that would be "class warfare".

Want another tax cut and demand it from your representatives? Well, don't be surprised if we more rapidly circle the drain. As more state and local employees get the ax, local spending stops and the downward economic spiral continues.

Folks like you ensure that the future is bleak. But go on and pass yourself off as a "Centrist". No, it's too easy to demand more cuts in spending--instead of manning up and paying for the things we need.

mudshark's picture

I gotta hand it to you. That was exceptional.
Agreed.

I don't seem to have that much effort in me to respond in such a well thought out manner. But the republicans recalled a legally ellected Governor who hadn't done anything wrong, replaced him with Arnold (I know he had to be voted in), and one of Arnold's first achievements was cutting funding for men on medical who received treatment for prostate cancer.

What a guy.

Every Pug candidate assumes Saint Ronnie is the model to emulate.

From Palin and Romney to Arnold Reagannegger to Meg Whitman, it's all about serving the ultra wealthy and cutting the rest of our throats.

Screw 'em. Who do hey think they are?

King Reagan made California into a toilet, destroyed the middle class that made America what it was after WWII, then taught his students how to do the same for their constituents.

Electing Whitman will continue the tradition.

Hey what's the problem? Meg's ads say it all. They say everything you need to know. She says she will fix California by "creating jobs, cutting spending and fixing education." Yup. That's it. How did she figure it out so easily?

Shhhhhh, don't tell Arnold, he might try to do it before she is elected.

Looks like Meg took a page out of the old Soviet playbook by intentionally silencing commentary in the hope that the public will not discover the true fraud she is. Funny how she has become the enemy they once despised. Since the power of truth and reason don't work for her, why not just be a control freak instead?

With "friends" like her---who needs enemies? This hag should get out of public service immediately and go establish a monarchy in a third world country.

Some people just can’t speak extemporaneously. Some people also can’t take direction. Perhaps Meg can’t do either:

From Roxanne:

Roxanne Kowalski: So why did you say those things?
C.D. Bales: Tell her you were afraid.
Chris McConnell: Because I was afraid.
Roxanne Kowalski: Of me? Afraid of what?
C.D. Bales: Tell her you were afraid of words.
Chris McConnell: What?

"pleasant bustline" ? LOL . Good one .

Insanity , it is what it is , there is no understanding it .

Note to Meg;
Slowly back out now ans save millions of $$$$. Go build some housing in Haiti (or Chile if the Haitians are a little too dark for you). It will be less of a headache and you will actually feel better. Or better yet, go spend $500,000,000 on a few schools here in California. It will be less of a headache and you will actually feel better. Being governor of California is not a good job to have at this time.

Remember that Meg Whitman was the one who bought Skype for eBay.... She paid billions of $$$$.... but she didn't get the special code that makes Skype work. eBay had to sell Skype for a huge loss a few years later.
Is this how you will fix California Meg?

Did they sell it on Ebay?? Just askin' :-)

The only difference between Meg and Sarah is that Meg has her own plane...

"...having someone so clearly not-ready-for-prime-time in the Governor's office is a prescription for disaster..."

Why? It didn't stop the voters in California from inflicting Ronald Reagan upon us. It didn't seem to matter when they elected AHNOLD - twice! Ebay CEO huh? Yeah, running one of the few bullshit dotcoms to survive the tech bubble bust - that really puts her in touch with what the people need.

Here's how we ask Meg any questions we want.

We get some "contributions" from a few folks, go online and sign up to attend one of her posh fundraising events at some hoity toity house in Beverly Hills.

We get dolled up, have our snazzy 10 megapixel video camera (or audio) and after the drinks and the hor d'oeuvres, we cozy up to her and ask her all our questions!

I'd ask what her position is on California OneCare, SB 810. "When the State Senate and Assembly pass this bill again, especially considering that the conservative Lewin Group in 2005 said, if passed, Single Payer in California would create a $10 billion SURPLUS over ten years, if elected Governor, would you sign it?"

And then you would ask your question.

Then we go home and throw it on YouTube.

Two tickets to a Meg Whitman fundraiser: $300. The look on her face when we she realizes we bypassed her thugs? Priceless.
