Naked Capitalism, Jesse (Jesse's Café Américain): There will be no recovery here

Robert Reich: When Will The Recovery Begin? Never here

Considering the alphabet soup of recovery scenarios, a 'U', a 'V', a 'W' or 'L' Reich says:

My prediction, then? Not a V, not a U. But an X. This economy can't get back on track because the track we were on for years -- featuring flat or declining median wages, mounting consumer debt, and widening insecurity, not to mention increasing carbon in the atmosphere -- simply cannot be sustained.

The X marks a brand new track -- a new economy. What will it look like? Nobody knows. All we know is the current economy can't "recover" because it can't go back to where it was before the crash. So instead of asking when the recovery will start, we should be asking when and how the new economy will begin. More on this to come.

May be leaving North Korea soon.

Two days ago, July 10, 2009, the NY Times published an article by James Risen, U.S. Inaction Seen After Taliban P.O.W.’s Died:

WASHINGTON — After a mass killing of hundreds, perhaps thousands, of Taliban prisoners of war by the forces of an American-backed warlord during the 2001 invasion of Afghanistan, Bush administration officials repeatedly discouraged efforts to investigate the episode, according to government officials and human rights organizations.

American officials had been reluctant to pursue an investigation — sought by officials from the F.B.I., the State Department, the Red Cross and human rights groups — because the warlord, Gen. Abdul Rashid Dostum, was on the payroll of the C.I.A. and his militia worked closely with United States Special Forces in 2001, several officials said. They said the United States also worried about undermining the American-supported government of President Hamid Karzai, in which General Dostum had served as a defense official. ..

The same day AP reported (Obama admin: No grounds to probe Afghan war crimes):

WASHINGTON (AP) — Obama administration officials said Friday they had no grounds to investigate the 2001 deaths of Taliban prisoners of war who human rights groups allege were killed by U.S.-backed forces.

The mass deaths were brought up anew Friday in a report by The New York Times on its Web site. It quoted government and human rights officials accusing the Bush administration of failing to investigate the executions of hundreds, and perhaps thousands, of prisoners.

U.S. officials said Friday they did not have legal grounds to investigate the deaths because only foreigners were involved and the alleged killings occurred in a foreign country. ...

AP also reported:

Reacting to the Times' report, human rights group Physicians for Human Rights called for the Justice Department to begin a criminal investigation into whether the Bush administration blocked inquiries into the Taliban deaths.

Nathaniel Raymond, the group's lead researcher into the deaths, said President Barack Obama "must open a full and transparent criminal probe and prosecute any U.S. officials found to have broken the law."

Today CNN reports (Obama orders review of alleged slayings of Taliban in Bush era):

(CNN) -- President Obama has ordered national security officials to look into allegations that the Bush administration resisted efforts to investigate a CIA-backed Afghan warlord over the killings of hundreds of Taliban prisoners in 2001.

"The indications that this had not been properly investigated just recently was brought to my attention," Obama told CNN's Anderson Cooper in an exclusive interview during the president's visit to Ghana. The full interview will air 10 p.m. Monday.

"So what I've asked my national security team to do is to collect the facts for me that are known, and we'll probably make a decision in terms of how to approach it once we have all of the facts gathered up," Obama said. ...

Where CIA and Northern Alliance machine gunned Taliban POWs from the walls then burnt the survivors alive in the cellars with gas/diesel.

I believe from reports, that some Taliban were not disarmed properly, and a fire fight broke out and one American CIA SF type got killed.

The Taliban taking refuge in the cellars had fuel oil poured in on them and it was set alight.

Would this be worth investigating, it was widely reported outside the US news channels. !?

No matter what you think of the people you are fighting, once people have surrendered or are POWs, burning people alive is not quite nice.

.. and perhaps the saddest part of the whole initial anti-Taliban operastion is that the real culprits were flown to safety in Pakistan, from the Kandahar airport, as British and American forces (which had encircled the airport) did nothing BUT the Taliban "rabble" and anyone else caught up in the mass incarceration were tortured, incinerated, or packed alive in shipping containers, trucked out of town, machine gunned thru the walls of the shipping containers, and dumped in these mass graves, all while American CIA stood by and watched (disputed by CIA, of course) ..

The massacred were fall guys!

Will there ever be investigations or prosecutions for those involved?

My hope is fading fast ....

Nutcase fundies in a war torn country, but they were the government and army of that country no matter what we thought of them. Their crime was that they sucked up to the Saudis to get recognition and funding for their isolated regime, and along with that money came OBL the corporate terror princling and his band of nutters, the rest was history.

Well we invaded, occupied, terrorized and we continue to pay the butchers bill, along with the innocent collateral damages.

Historically Afghanistan is a place empires send their armies to die.

No kidding; thats Goldman Sach's main defense. That, and that everyone else was doing it.

I'm just wondering how other Republican women feel when they see a woman like Palin getting such admiration from so many in their party. If I were a repubican woman, I would be embarrassed to say that she represented me. Norah O'Donnell was on msnbc this morning going on and on about Palin being the mother of five kids. Has anyone ever given admiration to a man in politics because he has fathered five kids? So what does giving birth to five kids have to do with running a country? Is she better prepared than a woman who has had only one kid?

And is it Norah's job to report the news or cheerlead for Palin?

Wouldn't pimp her child with down syndrome and carry him/her around like a Prada bag...while canceling funds for special olympics in her own state...

Sorry...Sarah Palin is a right wingnut old white man trapped in a cougar's body....which probably says more about Todd Palin...

Report: American children in poverty on the rise - http://www.post-gazette.com/pg/09192/983275-8...
According to "America's Children: Key National Indicators of Well-Being," 18 percent of all children 17 and under were living in poverty in 2007 -- up from 17 percent in 2006. The percentage of children who had at least one parent working full time was 77 percent in 2007 -- down from 78 percent in 2006.
And those living in households with extremely low "food security" -- where parents described children as being hungry or having skipped a meal or gone without eating for an entire day -- increased from 0.6 percent in 2006 to 0.9 percent in 2007, the report said.

Dr. Doom Has Some Good News - http://www.theatlantic.com/doc/200907/roubini
On March 28, 2007, Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke appeared before the congressional Joint Economic Committee to discuss trends in the U.S. economy. Everyone was concerned about the “substantial correction in the housing market,” he noted in his prepared remarks.
Fortunately, “the impact on the broader economy and financial markets of the problems in the subprime market seems likely to be contained.” Better still, “the weakness in housing and in some parts of manufacturing does not appear to have spilled over to any significant extent to other sectors of the economy.”
On that day, the Dow Jones industrial average was above 12,000, the S&P 500 was above 1,400, and the U.S. unemployment rate was 4.4 percent.

Imagine That: Cheney Ordered Shredding of the Constitution - http://www.hillbillyreport.org/diary/273/imag...
With the new revelations coming out that show what many Progressives already knew, that the Bush Administration had no respect whatsoever for our Constitution, other revelations come as no surprise. Neo-Con former Vice-President Dick Cheney had a leading role in keeping information from Congress that should have been disclosed.
No wonder we were whipped into a frenzy of fear after 9-11. The Bush Administration wanted to use their own failures in preventing an attack they were warned about the circumvent our Constitution and Congressional oversight.
Any con-servatives still want to say it was the 'bush' administration?

Corporatocracy: The Role of Small Business in the Economy Might be a Mystery to the Washington Post, but Not to Economists
- http://www.prospect.org/csnc/blogs/beat_the_p...
The WSJ (Murdoch street journal) tells readers that: "Some lawmakers fear mandated clearing and higher capital charges could hurt small businesses that won't be able to afford customized hedging anymore." Yeah, right. This is what the politicians say. The secret that the WSJ apparently has not learned is that some (yeah, right, "some") politicians are not always truthful.
They sometimes make arguments that do not reflect their real motives. For example, if they want to protect the big profit margins that Goldman Sachs, Morgan Stanley and the rest enjoy on customized derivatives, they might say that restrictions on these derivatives will raise the price so much that Joe's Diner will no longer be able to use them to hedge the price of hamburger meat.
Even though they could not care less about Joe's Diner hedging the price of hamburger meat, it makes a much better story line that saying: "I'm worried that the loss of the customized derivative market will hurt the profits of Goldman Sachs and Morgan Stanley, who happen to be big contributors to my campaign." And hey, if you can get the WSJ to buy it, why not tell them about the risks to Joe's Diner?

What these three men — one sick, one dying, one dead — had in common is they were National Guard soldiers on the same stretch of wind-swept desert in Iraq during the early months of the war in 2003. They and hundreds of other Guard members from Indiana, Oregon and West Virginia were protecting workers hired by a subsidiary of the giant contractor, KBR Inc., to rebuild an Iraqi water treatment plant.

A Big House Victory for a Progressive America: "House Democrats will ask the wealthiest Americans to help pay for overhauling the health care system with a $550 billion income tax increase, the chairman of the tax-writing Ways and Means Committee said Friday...It would generate about $550 billion over 10 years to pay about half the cost of the legislation." David Swanson: A Plan to End the Wars - http://www.afterdowningstreet.org/plan
"Healthcare Not Warfare" should be our cry (following the example of Progressive Democrats of America), along with "Housing Not Warfare," "Jobs Not Warfare," "Schools Not Warfare," etc. We have to force recognition of the financial choice before us. In that choice we find a solution to the healthcare debate that is almost too easy to be believed, but deadly real.
And we find a solution to the misconception that war does not impact the "Homeland." This is a discussion that should discuss the current wars as part of an expansion of military bases around the world, bases that make us less safe but cost us over $100 billion every year.

I'm watching the Right's new show, 'Sock it to Sotomayor', on c-span, and look at all the cameras.

What a fu**ing show it is for the world to see while we simultaneously try to 'tame' the world into our likeness.
This circus, this complete humiliation of a Constitutional process is proof to the world of how American reeeally operates inside the halls of our government.

That's what the Right has done to the country; they've corrupted every fundamental building block, our very way of life in hopes of turning their perversions into policy, by way of what they would deem as 'nationalism'.

So to put this sense of 'nationalism' into perspective, what we're reeeally seeing is quite simple. And it's a perspective that hasn't changed in centuries - just turned more spiteful and incestuous: when the white men don't get their way they still need a public hanging of some kind to feel like real men.

The only difference between then and now? Those silent cameras allow the hate to spread.

Cuts to Blitzkrieg's commentary (and commercials) every five minutes or so. Yechh!

There are plenty of white men who do not feel the way you described them. I am one of them.
