The discord among Republicans is leading to a clear sense of panic in their ranks. Witness the unprecedented meeting -- sans party apparatus -- being called by the members of the Republican National Committee this week to take a look at the potential leaders now lining up to direct the party's future.

Of course, given that one of the leading applicants recently created a stir by sending out a Christmas disc with "Barack the Magic Negro" on it, it might be that they want to take a harder look at who's going to be leading them.

Ironically, one of the names we keep hearing from RNC types about potential candidates to head them up is Ken Blackwell, the black wingnut from Ohio. If they name him to lead a decidedly very white party, one would hope they'd at least have enough self-awareness to retire the "Magic Negro" charge regarding Obama.

But given what we all keep hearing from conservatives themselves after the election -- that their problem was that they weren't far enough to the right -- it seems like all this may be more pretext for driving the party into further irrelevance.

Indeed, as Eric Ward observes, some of the more wingnutty of the GOP factions -- including the NRA, the Eagle Forum, and the anti-abortion crowd -- are all hoping to seize the reins in the midst of the GOP's power vacuum.

Interesting times, interesting times.

I would vote Republican if they would support...

1. Bring ALL troops home now
2. Cut all non food or medical Foreign Aid
3. Cut Defense Spending by 60%
4. Single payer universal health care for all
5. End the Federal Reserve
6. End all bailouts, place a stop on all home foreclosures
7. Balance the Trade and Budget Deficits
8. Legalizing marijuana
9. Make the internal combustion engine illegal by 2020
10. Send every US citizen over 18 a check for $2500

I guess you would vote for a Democrat because they promise these things? You sound like someone that would support Ron Paul.

Ron Paul is the guy thats going to put the GOP back together IMO. I cant wait to see how its going to unfold. Nobody in the GOP got the youth fired up like Paul did. He has a stronger, more energetic and giving base than anybody in the GOP right now.

The economy is going to be in worse shape after Obama gets his hands on it.. The Left is going to be pissed that he hasnt lived up to promises. The country will be hungry for a real change. Not some gimmick crap some cool 'black dude' is offering. Has Obama talked of repealing the Patriot Act lately? Or bringing troops home, instead of sending worn out kids to Afghani?? Talking to Iran is off the table too. How about his policies? Deficits dont matter? Cutting any spending at all?

How is this economy going to keep this bloated government fed? Its not and Obama is not going to help matters with his plan.

I cant wait for the left to make every excuse in the world for him. Keep blaming Bush for the next 4 years.. I can hear it now.. 'Well because Bush did this...'

Socialism is not a new idea. Its been tried OVER AND OVER AND FAILS. Liberty is a new idea.

Please take them elsewhere. You're magical messiah Ron Paul is irrelevant. But you live in a world where he must have gotten a HUGE percentage of the last vote. Guess what, no one cares about Paul, and he will disappear over the course of a few years. And then all you can do is what you've been doing in your posts, whining and filling your britches.

Caveat emptor and laissez-faire is also not a new idea and has failed, as we've seen in the Depressions of 1819, 1836, 1873, 1893 and a scare around 1910, and another Depression in 1929.

It's going to be interesting to watch this unfold. This is a group that made intolerance an art form so it was only a matter of time before they started to turn on each other. Several months ago I predicted that we might end up with 3 separate parties congealing from the republican ooze and I stand by it now. One will be the corporatist neocons, the second will be the xianist anti humans and the third will be the coulter/hannity/limbaugh hate party.

Pass the Cheetos and beer. I plan on enjoying this for as long as it lasts.

After a painful holiday with right wing relatives and in-laws, I can tell you that there is a real schism coming down the pike for the wonderful GOP Party. (God, sometimes I just love Dino Rossi)

The more moderate members of my conservative relations have all but given up hope on ever voting GOP again. Now, they are far from being liberal and only vote Democrat after cringing for a few minutes but their heart is in the right place. They, not this long haired DFH, were the ones defending Obama and his team during the 'discussions' at the dinner table.

Uncle Fester (I'm sure everyone has one of those) was the lone wingnut this year. He showed just how hollow his arguments have been these past few years; in that he had no backup from the others.

As I watch in perverse pleasure the implosion of the GOP, I am wont to wonder what will emerge from its fetid corpse? Will the moderates find the numbers to take over or will the corpse become one of those brain-eating zombies?

My future family gatherings is at stake.

OK, talk about a screed in need.

It should be 'Irrelevancy', not Irreverancy, which isn't much of a word.

And to top it off, my tenses went south in the last sentence. It should be 'are' at stake.

Never comment before coffee.

When I read yesterday about that one guy sending out that disgusting cd, I had to laugh because I wondered how much of a tail spin the other republicans were going into when they heard. I mean their party is already a total mess and then one of their own tears it up even more.

Do they want to be the party of Sarah Palin and this guy or do they want to try to become a somewhat respectable organization? We'll see.

They remind me of Barney Fife in the Andy Griffith tv show when he would get all nervous and excited and totally fu*k up everything he tried to do.

Whenever I think that the GOP will change they pull this kind of stunt and I sit back and watch them implode. It makes me wonder about the GOP of the future when the men in charge have nothing left but to scream about the world leaving them behind. What will they turn into, the party of Palin, far right wing religous zealots; the party of Newt, racists that keep the rich rich and the poor even poorer; or the party of the neo-cons, all war all the time? The way I see it now the party of Palin is going to take over and turn even farther to the right, it will be like watching a NASCAR race when the driver slams into the wall and cant turn to the left even when it means you lose the race and the car is destroyed. I hope that I am wrong on this since I think that the process works better when there are more than one opines to a subject, but the other side needs to be sane for that to work.

Blackwell will just claim Barack was never black enough, and thus not a good person. How could you not listen to such infallible logic from a guy with "black" right in his last name?

If you did, congratulations. It's very good!

The first time I heard the song, "Puff the Magic Dragon" it was at the high school where I attended and it was sung by a fellow student, you might have heard of him, Gram Parsons. He was a year or two older than me, but oh my god, did I have a crush on him. I only attended that particular school for one year, but I never forgot about him.

It is interesting that apparently the "take away" the repubs got from the election is they need to run a "black guy." Not that I expect subtlety from repubs but still, you gotta believe that their inability to see why people voted for Obama will make them just as ineffectual as they've been for the last 2 years.

Big Boppa's picture

It's also why they ran a woman for VP. In their tiny brains it made perfect sense that Hillary supporters would reflexively vote for the vagina candidate.

This is what passes for logic among the 6000 year old universe crowd.

as a spokesman for the African-American vote to try to persuade them to vote republican. He is an evil SOB who f'ed up two elections here in Ohio to get Bush elected, by making it difficult for predominately black precincts that vote heavily democratic to actually get to vote or have votes counted. This year he sent out mass emails from some New York rag warning voters that Obama could be the antichrist. If he is made the new RNC chairman they can forget ever winning with a minority vote. Their strategy of only making their base happy by being even further to the right will put them on the losing side every time which is fine by me!

Yes, the GOP is imploding at the moment (cheers), but please let's none of us take their demise as a given. The next two years may well be tough ones. The Democrats will now have to actually govern and dig us out of the hole Bush put us in, but for the next two years all the Republicans are going to have to do is snipe from the sidelines and reorganize. They are sick, not dead.
