Will the Republicans work with Obama to get the economy back on track?
By John Amato Tuesday Jan 06, 2009 3:15pmAOL used my post called...
Barack Obama highlights quick action and Oversight for his new stimulus package
...for the basis of their poll question. As I wrote in the post:
I hope Obama's love affair with bipartisanship will come to an end very soon. Not because I don't think it's a good idea to have both sides working together, but because Conservatives are incapable of doing just that. They do not want Obama to succeed because it will weaken their grip on American politics for years to come at the expense of average Americans just trying to get by.
It's about ideology for them and not about the healing that our country is in desperate need of. I think Obama will soon feel their un-partisan wrath sooner rather than later and hopefully it will snap him out of any thought he had that he could work with Conservatives, no matter how "centrist" he goes.
I doubt they will want to improve the latest Congressional polling numbers...

Not likely. Here is a list of predictions of other potential republiCON action in the coming year.
bipartisan is great, but these people in washington are all messed up. the scams are based on blaming the other party, scams first, america whenever.
It will be worse for most Americans and peoples of the world.
We will be told better days are ahead.
We will rag on various politicians.
And on 12/31/09, those who are still afloat will ask, who could have predicted all of this?
I have seen the democrats bent over for the last 8 yrs, so I predict the repubs will have to co-operate and get on their knees this time.
The repubs will probably hold out on the infrastructure stimulus stuff, and demand democrats agree to upgrade and build more prisons throughout the country. ...but aside from that it should be business as usual.
They have a country to conquer, and need to work together!
They are already stabbing him in the back.
To lay deception and obstruction on "Conservatives" may be slightly off the mark. That description....and many more, belongs with Republicans, They are far removed from what conservative actually means. These days, republicans are a different species. Almost alien to this planet. They are oxymorons in practice. Black is white, right is wrong, day is night. Completely nonredeemable. A fact to be very aware of. (Pres. Obama, are you listening?)
And fiscal drunk sailors. Bush created more debt that EVERY OTHER PRESIDENT IN THE HISTORY OF THE UNITED STATES!! Reagan did the same thing. And Old man Bush did it too. All REpublicans. They call themselves fiscal conservatives. they say black is white and right is wrong and day is night and let the market take care of it as they bail every financial institution out at the drop of a hat.
in paul krugman's NYT column yesterday he says preventing a depression may NOT be as easy as some want to believe. obama say we need to' act swiftly and boldly'. democrats hope to pass an economic plan with broad partisan support. the reality as krugman puts it is that (R) are postering already with leaders setting up roadblocks. the (R) may back some type of stimulus plan but will it be delayed and/or downsized. if this happens any legislation past may be too late.
I think reality is that nothing anybody does is going to FIX it. In the end it will just have to shake itself out. Hopefully Obama will make it so that it is not as bad but there is a lot of other factors that cannot just be turned on and off.
So much so that I will keep on voting until the results are more to my liking.
Besides, the question should be reworded. It should read: “Will the loser republicans work with Obama…” or “Will the party that got us in this mess work with Obama…”
I think a better question is - *if* the GOP works with Obama - *could* they both get the economy on track?.
We don't manufacture anything here. We just borrow money. We owe China a ton of dough and don't have any money to pay them back.
I like Obama but the stimulus he is proposing doesn't change the game at all.
And if we don't make things to sell we are toast.
I love your name, btw. Sorry if that's off topic.
the (R) better cooperate and quickly. the next ticking time bomb as many of you
know is the commercial real estate. vacancy rates in office buildings exceed 10% in virtually every city and rising rapidly. with less rental income and ongoing vacancies building owners will need to refinance. guess what that's a problem when the credit market remains chilly this makes it tough for banks, ins. cos. and our favorite hedge funds holding the loans(pieces of them) as securities.
get ready to hear "upside down" and "under water" regarding the commercial real estate.
The Republicans are almost irrelevant at this point and will not prove to be Obama's biggest problem in Congress. It's the dipsh*t, stupid, selfish, and incompetent Democratic leadership (Reid, Feinstein, Pelosi, Rockefeller, et. al.) that will be the 10 ton anchor around Obama's neck these next four years. Republicans just need to sit back and watch the Democrats self-destruct.
will the dems go along with the repugs when they ensure status quo? will they go out of their way to weaken changes the nation voted overwhelmingly for?
continue to be on the wrong side of history?
obstructionist(r) and cave-in artists(d)
as long as the members of the legislative club are ok, it's all good to them, imo.
The answers on this poll SKEWED RIGHT. I wonder who got to answer those questions before it got to C&L bloggers.
Only a moron would still use such a cesspool of ISP as their internet portal. Seriously...
I remember the days in the usenet newsgrous, in which some of the servers I used added aol.com addresses by default to the ignore filters, because there were so many f*cking idiots posting from that domain...
.
I've never seen so much "avoid the issues" type of mentality in a poll in my life. Biased and crap is what it was.
Other was a preferred answer on many because it was so out of touch with the reality people have.
I like how the Palestinians are at fault for being in the way of White Phosphorous Shells. If those Darn Palestinians would just not get shown on TV dying this whole Genocide would go much better for poor ol' helpless loveable Israel.
Are you people HIGH???
They spent the past dozen or so years SCREWING the American public left right and center, and you think that now that the whole mess they made is imploding they're going to do a damn thing to fix it?
WHY??? What do they have to gain? Why should they co-operate? It's a Democratic Congress, so all they have to do is sit around and bitch and obstruct things at random intervals, and then say "Hey - look - the Democrats SUCK! Your lives are getting worse! See???" And the American Public, which, by and large is one of the dullest collection of delusional fatheads ever known, will sit there and lap it up saying "Uhhh, yup - lookee there. Them durn old Dems are screwin it all up. Things were bedder when Raygun was preznit."
The Republicans have almost nothing o gain from co-operating, and they know it, and if you think for one New York Second that they're going to play ball nicely, or fairly, or even at all, you are a delusional fathead.
Many of the methods republicans use to obstruct and delay are rules, not law. Those "rules" can be changed in the house with a simple majority. The democrats have the majority by substantial numbers. They can change those rules if they are so inclined. ( The senate requires 60 votes to pass anything. Democrats lack that number at this point, even with a majority of senators.)
It's insane to think the GOP is going to help this country along with a Dem President & Congress at the helm. Perhaps it has always been this way, BUT today's Republicans are all about helping GOP aims & themselves, NOT about making this a better Republic.
I wish it was otherwise. I wish bipartisan was the norm not the rarity.
I feel like I have scream this THE PROBLEM IS FOREIGN DEBT!
Dem's and Rep's both endorsed spending our way out of this with bailouts! This stimulus package as all other deficit spending is dependent on other countries willingness to loan us the money.
So we have no money and are heavy in debt to countries like China and Japan so we are going to borrow more and spend it increasing our debt to fix the debt problem we have currently?!?! HELLO! Anyone else see a problem here?!?!?
Please someone, ANYONE tell me WHY and more importantly HOW this is good?!?!?

That link is straight off the FED's own website people, it doesn't get any worse than that.
Conservatism discards Prescription, shrinks from Principle, disavows Progress; having rejected all respect for antiquity, it offers no redress for the present, and makes no preparation for the future.
-Benjamin Disraeli
That was a long time ago when he said that.
The more things change, the more they remain the same.

Snowball, I guess maybe I was being a little reminiscent, going back to about 30 or 40 years. When conservatism represented ideals rather than the dangerous and offensive ideology prevalent in today's republicans, both political officeholders and the republican electorate. They are very hard to tolerate, to say the least. By the way, I am NOT republican or conservative, I just think the republican party has been hijacked by Tom DeLay clones, sociopaths, megalomaniacs and religious wackos. Below is according to Merriam-Webster:
conservative
Function:
noun
Date:
1831
1 a: an adherent or advocate of political conservatism b. capitalized : a member or supporter of a conservative political party
2 a: one who adheres to traditional methods or views, fiscal restraint b: a cautious or discreet person
All the republicans can do at this point is obstruct so that in 2010 they can run on "the Democrats didn't get anything done" even though it was the Repug's who stopped everything from getting done, it's their style.
I don't see the Republicans working with the Democrats - the repugs just don't have any interest in doing what's best for America.
Consider please, that the Republicans have the lowest approval ratings of the 2 parties in Congress. The Republican President has the lowest approval rating in history. That over the last eight years the Republicans have wreaked nothing but havoc on our Country and in so doing have brought us to the brink of ruin. Not exactly the face of a party with credible references, is it?
How can they possibly even consider doing anything other than go along with the stimulus? If they refuse to do so, they will be turning their backs on many of their own constituencies. People who are hurting mightily, and who need their help now more than ever. What will their chances be of getting re-elected in 2010 - and 2012 - if they choose to go down that path?
The people of America are not stupid. I believe it's become very evident to all of us that their so-called "Love of Country" has been a gigantic lie all along. If they can't bring themselves to work in a bi-partisan manner, their only legacy will be their whacked-out ideology, and look at what that got us. It has led us down the path of economic destruction. Trashed our Constitution, because they supposedly knew better than our Founding Fathers. Started a war based on lies. Caused us to lose all respect in the eyes of the rest of the world.
To steal a famous line from an old movie, we're "mad as hell and we aren't going to take it anymore", AND we aren't going to believe their lies anymore when they try to pull the wool over our eyes about the stimulus, either!
You're thinking that the Republicans give a damn what Americans think. They obviously don't give a fat rat's patoot or they wouldn't still be trying to pull the same nonsense they did BEFORE they got booted out on their asses.
The Republicans will continue to do as they have for the last eight years and then they will cry about it at the next Midterm when more of them are on the unemployment line.
The house the New President is to stay at befor he moves in to the W/H was M-T when Obama wanted to moven so his kids coukd start school. bush puts some asshole in it just so Obama would have to move into a hotel. what an asshole to the very end. How did a asshole get AOL on here. another asshole norm (I take bribes)colman just won't let go.I am gonis sue, sue, sue! ass wipe needs go go back home.
The Republicons will do as they are wont to do: spend the next 8 years trying to discredit Barack Obama. Count on it.
Doesn't matter that Obama is the great unifier. Doesn't matter that the Republicons have put our once great nation into a nearly irreversible down-spin. All Republicons know is lies and fear tactics.
The Republicans will whine, stamp, cry, bitch, moan, propagandize, demonize and filibuster EVERYTHING Obama wants to do whether or not they would normally agree with it because of sheer spite and the desire to make the Democrats look ineffectual. If the Democrats bring up a non-binding resolution honoring George W. Bush for managing not to get us all killed in the last eight years the Republicans will filibuster it just because they're assholes - just like they did with the resolution honoring American mothers on Mother's day.
I also predict that the extremely useless Harry Reid will convene a committee to discuss the possibility of organizing a commission to determine whether to hold a hearing to call for a vote to send a moderately sternly worded
letterrequest to the Republicans to ask them politely to stop being so mean.Obama doesn't need the assistance of the rightarded traitors among us. He should focus on restoring the Constitution, the rule of law, and the economy and he should not pander to the Christofascist right who hate everything the United States stands for.
