I didn't think any emails of Gov. Mark Sanford would hit the news already, but The State already has some online.

Two, mutual feelings .... You have a particular grace and calm that I adore. You have a level of sophistication that so fitting with your beauty. I could digress and say that you have the ability to give magnificent gentle kisses, or that I love your tan lines or that I love the curve of your hips, the erotic beauty of you holding yourself (or two magnificent parts of yourself) in the faded glow of the night’s light - but hey, that would be going into sexual details ...read on

The State sat on the emails for months. I wonder how hard they really tried to verify them?

I feel bad for his family because this has to be so painful for his wife and kids. But as for Mark, well, he was one of those conservative idiots who attacked Bill Clinton and now is exposed as a fraud.

The standard Sanford has set for other politicians over the years has been fairly high. A member of the House of Representatives during the heyday of the Clinton-Lewinsky affair, he was often a harsh critic of the president for his marital misconduct.

This is "very damaging stuff," Sanford declared at one point, when details of Clinton's conduct became known. "I think it would be much better for the country and for him personally (to resign)... I come from the business side," he said. "If you had a chairman or president in the business world facing these allegations, he'd be gone."

Explaining his decision to back impeachment articles against Clinton, he added, "I think what he did in this matter was reprehensible... I feel very comfortable with my vote."

I doubt he will last more than a week or two as the Governor of South Carolina. I'm sure TMZ sent one hundred cameras down to Argentina and they won't come home until they find the girl of his dreams.

UPDATE: Sanford's office is saying that he won't step down.

Although some in South Carolina -- and nationally -- are calling for Gov. Mark Sanford to resign his office in the wake of his six-day hiatus from the state and his acknowledgment of an extramarital affair on Wednesday, a close adviser to the Republican governor told the Fix that Sanford is not considering such an option.

"Mark is firmly focused on reconciling his marriage, and on fulfilling his duties to the people of South Carolina for the remaining eighteen months of his term," said a senior adviser to Sanford who was granted anonymity to speak freely. "Jenny is a full partner in both of those desires."

The source added that Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.), a major voice in the state GOP, has publicly voiced his support for Sanford to stay on as governor and plans to actively advocate for that position over the coming days.

OK, if a party and a politician is going to run on phony moral values then they should die by those same values, but forget the affair, Mark Sanford looked like a deranged man yesterday at his presser and showed an instability that bordered on the insane. He's obviously in a mental collapse and shouldn't be leading the people of South Carolina. And the most damning fact is that he abandoned his post for almost a week. He left all the people of South Carolina without someone in charge with the power to call the shots and if a major incident had occurred the state would have been immobile to take action. That's a firing offense all by itself.

UPDATE II: Phony outrage post by Red State: To majority media and other Democrats : we police our own, and you don’t get to judge</a>

Waaaa.....OK, we don't judge you differently---you set up the dumb values/Focus on the Family litmus test and when John Ensign and David Vitter fail that test, they receive standing ovations from fellow conservatives.

Another, Republican Sen. Jim DeMint of South Carolina, said Ensign was "warmly" received. After speaking for about two minutes, Ensign received applause from his Republican peers.

His infidelity and job irresponsibility aside, is publishing his (or anyone's) private e-mails legal? Or ethical? It's become another lascivious circus triggered by deliberately provoking media contribution. My opinion is: forget the e-mails. His wife looks and sounds like cold fish with as much turn on as a light switch attached to a burnt out bulb. Doesn't justify sneaking around; he should have divorced her millions. His real infidelity was to the people of his state and it wasn't over a woman. Grow up people.

E-mails private. Ha ha ha. Where you been living, under a rock? The government reads everything you write. Just saying. I get your point though.

I don't really care what the guy did, but he was irresponsible as a governor. And, as always, the moral hypocrisy is glaring. Gotta tear down that myth. So I say GO FOR IT.

Wasn't there evidence that the NSA were either listening to Gov. Spitzer's calls or reading his emails, not to search for evidence of crime, but political ammunition since he was aiming a corruption search at the banking industry in New York?

As you alluded to this is about his hypocrisy more than anything else. Of course the media keep forgetting this when they tell the story. If they would just remark about how he treated Clinton and how the Republicans try to come off as the "family values" party then more people would understand why this has more importance than the run of the mill "Affair Scandal".

Red_Headed's picture

My point was that either way the sexual bit is none of our business. The only valid thing that I think could be applied here is that he essentially had a free vacation on the tax payer.

I'd fire his butt for this, but I wouldn't care about what he did on the free vacation, only that he took one - see the distinction? Then again, I likely wouldn't have hired him in the first place.

Let me put it another way. I think the reporting on his sexual exploits is purely for our entertainment. The issue here is his lack of accountability - thats it!

Blue Lensman's picture

Sanford clearly called for the resignation of Clinton because of extramarital affairs. Have to follow your own rules.

Now about that reporting on sexual exploits - got a link?

LazyCosmos's picture

called the press conference and announced that he was having an affair.

Liberalicious's picture

truly isn't the issue except for the fact it was the REASON for the disappearance. I may be able to cut someone slack for pulling a stunt like thin if they had some kind of dignified reason, an illness, a death, some important mission etc...Then depending on the reason, you could either give them anything from a warning to canning their ass. Sanford deserves an ass-canning.

boocilla69's picture

really care less about the sex part because I'm sure he's not at his most attractive when he's naked, however, these asshats like to insert themselves in other people's sex business: abortion, gay marriage, attacking Clinton for getting a blow job, etc.

They all really need to choose, either they can STFU or can they run their mendacious mouths and live what they speak. It really is that simple. Oh, and Sanford is reaping EVERYTHING that he deserves.

These Republicans will continue their B.S. until they are held to the same standards they impose on everyone else.

slippytoad's picture

As long as the GOP keeps making this bullshit claim to the moral high ground, they fully deserve to be brutally raked over the coals every time one of their leading lights goes astray.

This is way different than Edwards or Clinton. Sanford, in fact, had the despicable gall to wag his finger at Clinton 10 years ago.

The message is, if you're going to talk the talk, you better fuckin' walk the walk. Or it's Serious Shut Up Time.

miss_lola's picture

He's one of the guys that says gays can't marry because the sanctity of marriage must be upheld. And he goes and shits on the sanctity of marriage. It's one more nail in the bigotry coffin.

Wheels's picture

The only part that's relevant is the hypocrisy. I couldn't care less about any politician's sex life, but for the ones that are out for blood when it's a political foe, only to have commited the same offense later, they deserve all the scrutiny and shame they receive.

That's the difference between Bill Clinton and Mark Sanford. Clinton never chided others about their marital transgressions. Get it?

trailrunnr's picture

When Sanford pontificates against gay marriage, runs an entire campaign on family values, and paints himself as a hero of "traditional" marriage ... it's glaring hypocrisy. I also don't care about his sexual peccadillos. But this guy personally dumps shit directly on me and my family (gay marriage for 34 years). I greatly enjoy watching him twist in the wind.

This is NOT about sex or emails. It's about 1) harmful hateful hypocrisy and 2) incompetence. Republican hallmarks!

...he persecuted and criticized others for similar infidelities, or he used public money inappropriately. And by all accounts he did both, so he's fair game. However, as another poster said, I really care about lobbyists gutting banking and healthcare reform.

ricky's picture

Credit where credit is due - it was Gina Smith of The State who did the legwork to track Sanford down in the Atlanta Airport and corner him.

Then The State informed him they had these emails .. and he scheduled a news conference and confessed in public.

E-mails obtained by The State newspaper in December detailed an affair between Gov. Mark Sanford and Maria, a woman in Buenos Aires, Argentina.

However, attempts to verify the e-mails — from an anonymous source — were fruitless, until Wednesday. Then, acting on another anonymous tip that Sanford would be on a plane returning from Argentina, the paper sent a reporter to Atlanta.

Late Wednesday, the governor’s office said it would not dispute the authenticity of the e-mails
~~~~~~
So they have had the emails for about 6 months but couldn't verify.
i think many of us are not really that interested in this guy's affair(s). but having said that sanford was very out spoken about clinton in 1999. believe it or not karma has a good memory. the (r)ight in my opinion more so than the left uses culture issues/family value issues to differentiate themselves from their opponent/opposing party. some people really need to understand why this is used. it's been used with great results with evangelicals. sanford can/may be forgiven by these people that's their business.i really don't care. but he can be forgiven/accepted then i would expect others can be forgiven/accepted for their perceived short comings. what i'm saying is don't use your "family values" to destroy others and then be hypocrites when it comes time to judge your own. the (r) uses cultural issues to rally a smaller party the (r). they often use personal attacks inorder to get the left to fight back with personal attacks. all the personal attacks and nothing gets done. the REAL topics/agenda get avoided. many on the right more so than the left vote on family value issues more so than their economic/policy best issue. that's mistake in my opinion.
They're all vital issues, but reflecting on the hypocrisy of a prominent Republican will not detract from any solutions.
La Nacion in Buenos Aires, Argentina names the woman as 43-year-old Maria Belen Chapur.
Chapur is reportedly a divorced mother of two, and works for an agricultural company. The paper says she speaks several languages and keeps in shape by playing sports.
In his Wednesday news conference admitting the affair, Sanford said that the woman with whom he had the relationship had two children.
I noted last week that Ensign said his affair was "the worst thing I've ever done in my life." This from a scumbag who voted for the genocidal Iraq war based entirely on lies.
How sad that ReThuglican "values" say that murdering millions, or stealing million$, is perfectly acceptable behavior but anything involving genitalia not endorsed by some churchlike institution is horrible SIN!
I disagree that this Sanford hypocrite (trying to deny the children of his state education was moral, an affair was immoral) will resign or be forced out. IOKIYAR. Isn't David "Diaper" Vitter still around, and didn't Larry "Wide Stance" Craig serve out the rest of his term? Getting caught just adds a little salsa picante to the whole situation
Check this clip out of Mika Brzezinski essentially saying that Sanford's affair is not as bad as Clinton's because at least Sanford was in love with the person he was cheating on his wife with.
This is crazy!!!
... opined that, well, Sanford's affair was a personal matter, and not like Vitter or Spitzer, who got caught soliciting prostitutes.
Unfortunately, this was the station where I work. I dropped a note to one of the producers, but I doubt I'll get an answer.
Sanford made it a state matter because he chose to run off for four days not telling people within the executive branch where he was going and turned off his mobile phone.
The South Carolina constitution gives only one man authority to act in case of an emergency - the governor of South Carolina.
Sanford put the people of S.C. in danger because had their been a state emergency, Sanford's irresponsible bahavior would have definitely hindered the proper agencies to act because Sanford could not be found to authorize them.
....that ever happened to Governor Sanford.
Lower the retirement age.
Here's a link to an Argentinian web page, in that page you can see a video of María Belén Chapur when she was in USA as a reporter a month after the attacks of 9/11.
As governor of South Carolina, Sanford put the people of that state in great risk of danger. If there happened to be any kind of state emergency, the proper authorities would not have been able to act in an expedient manner because only the governor has the right to issue orders where state security is concerned.
He would have needed to sign over that decision making authority to the Lt. Governor. However, the Lt. Governor did not know where the hell he was nor did most of his staff and security detail. Sanford shouldn't resign based solely on his affair. The affair just makes it that more outrageous that he would put the people of his state in that kind of danger, so he could fly off to Argentina to see the other woman. His irresponsible actions in not letting people know where he was for all those days should be the reason his state leaders should demand his resignation.
that our worthless governor is added to the list of hypocritical assholes http://www.lvrj.com/news/19817214.html
Governor Jim Gibbons, Nevada, another fine example of a Republican husband, father and comprehensive hypocrite. The governor used his state-issued cell phone to send over 850 text messages to a woman that is not his wife. Some of the messages were timed at 2:00 a.m., you know, that time when most of us text message people to whom we are not married. The governor wrote a couple of checks to cover the cost to the state of Nevada because he was surprised that his state-issued phone did not come with free texting and being the mental giant that he is he never bothered to ask. He said he was asking the woman that he was texting for info about her thoughts on taxation, cuz that's what people talk about between midnight and 2:00 a.m with people to whom they are not married.
That phrase is out and out rubbish. No one leads the people of South Carolina, or of the United States. The other side lost WWII, and we don't have Fuehrers or Leaders in this country, much as the other side would like to believe that we do, well at least when we elect Republicans to the presidency.
Oh great. First the Republicans ruin the US economy, now they're even outsourcing adultery.
Folks, Argentine woman are the most beautiful in the world (well, I didn't make it to Brazil yet), so I understand the Guv's fall.
But still, IMPEACH the asshole. He put the state of SC at risk (or maybe less risk) by his dereliction of duty and use of public funds for his dalliance.
The FOOL should have taken the stimulus right off--he could have done many more "trade missions" with our money.
Resign you RAT BASTARD, or be removed (Gov. Khameini).
Regardless of your politics, and I think the guy was just grandstanding for a presidential run in '12, with his stimulus refusal,posting someone's love letters is just wrong.
mr teaspoon's picture
Agreed, it's a shame few others seem as concerned.
Forget his politics for a second, posting anyones private, personal correspondence is just wrong.
Someone needs to tell Blimpbaugh's maid to run out and get him some more drugs.
Maybe his marriage would've been happier if he had sent emails like this to his wife.....
