Woolsey-Harman-funraiser_93eaf.jpg

This is completely unacceptable. The co-chair of the Congressional Progressive Caucus is throwing her support behind a Blue Dog named Jane Harman for reelection in 2010, and who happens to be the representative in my own district in California. I've been thinking of running against her because I'm so upset at Harman's actions in Congress, but for Woolsey to be holding fundraising events for a known Blue Dog should be a firing offense for the CPC.

Rep. Raúl Grijalva has been excellent for the CPC, but obviously Lynne needs to go. The idea is to grow the CPC and progressives in Congress, not support odious Blue Dogs who obstruct progressive legislation and take this country to the far, far right. This is a complete betrayal.

I'm calling for the CPC to remove her as the co-chair immediately.

Howie Klein has more:

Harman supports a wide range of Republican policies that Woolsey has always opposed-- from the Iraq War, the anti-family/pro-bankster bankruptcy bill, and abolishing the estate tax to warrantless wiretaps (except the ones that expose her as an Israeli spy) and offering "special treatment" to defense contractors. She is widely considered to be the least trustworthy and most disliked Democrats in the House by her fellow Democrats. And Lynne Woolsey understands that completely.

Is this how the co-chair of the Congressional Progressive Caucus builds a progressive movement? Marcy Winograd is in a tight primary race against Harman. It may be too much to expect Woolsey to campaign for Winograd, but endorsing the Blue Dog who is consistently voting against -- and working behind the scenes against -- everything the Progressive Caucus is supposed to stand for? Then they wonder why no one takes them seriously? Woolsey should be relieved of her position as co-chair...

Go here to break the power of the blue dogs and the Republican conservatives

It warms my heart to see what an open tent we have.

C'mon John, you need to fall in line.

ignored by the democratic establishment I'd agree there is a problem fundraising for a bluedog. Doesn't make any sense at all. I know it's one step at a time, but every time we replace one conservative democrat with a progressive, it's a step in the right direction.

Because most people in here refuse to accept that this is business as usual. They're SHOCKED SHOOOOCKED I tell ya...that ideology doesn't matter on the Beltway. The only thing that matters is getting re elected. So, you scratch my back and I'll scratch yours.

But noooo...we're all shocked to shit!! Cons and Demi progressives whoring around together!! OMG!!! Theyshould be fired...shot...expelled from office. BWAAAAAAAH BOOOGA BOOOGA BOOOGA!!

This is the SYSTEM. Stop acting all shocked to shit about it.

You want to run for office. GREAT. You want to try and change it. GREAT. Knock your socks off.

But please knock off all the teeth gnashing and utter SHOCK. It's immature and frankly insulting.

Vote GOP and move forward to the 18th Century.

Who's shocked? And if this were your representative wouldn't you want her replaced? I sure don't like mine, but with my history I'm sure not running against him.

Immature and insulting is referring to what exactly? Please fill me in.

mausium's picture

Since it happens everyday, let's not get all uppity or illuminate specific examples of the problem.

Ignorance is bliss, after all!

Rich H's picture

It's an obvious problem, and I concur with John wanting a change. Pretty simple really.

it just shouldn't happen....

Here's how bad Obama is:

After Jane Harman was caught on tape saying she'd go to Justice to try to help some fellow AIPAC'ers who had gotten themselves into some spying problems was on Obama's SHORT LIST to head the CIA!!!!

Not very good judgment on his part, eh???

Unless of course protecting and conspiring with Israel is a top priority.

Here's an article by Glenn Greenwald detailing why Jane Harman should have been bounced out of Congress. She most certainly should NOT be running for re-election.:

I actually wasn't there to personally witness the events that were reported, so I cannot testify on a stack of F'ing Bibles that what the article said happened actually did.

I didn't say I "believed" the story. I think I said, "If it turns out to be true...."

Sorry to ruffle your poor little feathers, pal.

Newsflash....I'm not the only Democrat who has become SERIOUSLY disillusioned with Obama.

We should all take a keen interest in running more progressive candidates against the colored canines and republicans.

Who is the viable candidate to her left?

As far as fundraising goes - it stinks to high heaven but it is thus.

At 60 I would have never thought Mexico would be less corrupt than the United States, but with the calibre of people we have in public office in the U.S. I'm sure Mexico really is better NOW.
I would have never thought that growing up. Thanks older generation for screwing up this country....royally!

It was nearly always this bad.

The difference?

You never heard about these things before. Transparency is somewhat better, even if the media isn't reporting it. The media at least gave the impression of caring. Seeing as I'm only in my thirties, do you recall such an emphasis on false equivalency over truth in the past?

of why I will never donate my time or money to any political organization based in Washington, DC. It is altogether far too easy for these organizations' main agendas to be corrupted and subverted by the PtB, either C-Street loons, K-Street goons, or other Corporatist entities, like Rahm Emanuel.

I don't have any problem with donating to individual politicians, presuming I can keep a close weather-eye on their words and deeds. Otherwise, not so much.

John,
EXCELLENT post today.

Marcy is Jane's Democratic challenger to whom the Progressive Caucus is hosting a fundraiser AGAINST. For the life of me, I do not understand. Ms. Winograd is far more progressive than many currently IN the Caucus. Apparently, the CPC feels secure with the Blue Dogs in their camp. For myself, I do not!

This just reveals how far people will go to "PROTECT" the status quo of the "ELITE" beltway found in D.C.

I am sure she has a valid excuse she can conveniently blame on Rahm Emmanuel or his faithful sidekick, Whatsisname Obama.

OT: RRRRRUUUUUNNNNNNN !

(on topic) i dialed over to the West Coast office as it is 6pm DC time and a pleasant young man offered to pass my gentle comments along. While i live and work in the greater Seattle, WA area, I told him, as co-chair of the caucus I've supported her because I feel she works these causes, Harmon's history runs anathema and Ms Woolsey can support who she wants but who she supports belies her true value system and actions speak way louder than words, so maybe she should re-evaluate, I offered, whether she wants to BE the co-chair, as in, you know, lead follow or get out of the way. I'd rather have her out because people like her are the ones who will inevitably restrain the ProgCauc from fielding candidates in primarys under a Green Democrat or New Democrat banner.

Hey, Handypants, Juarez ain't nothin' but a border town. C'mon down to Cabo where the rock stars party. And do it to it on the beach. Tijuana ain't so bad either. At least you know who your crooks are. Not this "hide behind the skirt" types, whether their men or women (really the same). Oye como va! Hmmmm Gringo speak with fork tounges......za....And just lay your gun on the table( That's in LA and New York too....)

Liberal AND Proud's picture

Then don't sound shocked. I had my righteous indignation period too. It ended when I got out of college and joined the REAL world.

It's what are we going to do about it.

Our only power is the vote (since we're all tooo poor, busy and cowed to march the streets).

Don't vote for mildly progressives. Stay home. Make them PAY. So the GOP wins seats. Fine. Maybe a few more years of free market lunacy will really wake this country up.

I believe that the problem is NOT the right wing. The problem is capital cronyism. The GOP manipulates the extremists right to keep their incumbents in, the gives them nothing. Last time I looked, abortion was still legal and despite all the hullabaloo a gun law hasn't been overturned or strenghtened at the Federal level in 15 years.

The Dems manipulate progressives and gives us a healthcare bill that a corporatist COngress would have given us.

We're all being used, and it's time we figured that out and stopped the mailing campaigns and righteous indignation and voted with our feet.

Vote GOP and move forward to the 18th Century.

Want to really use the power of the blogosphere.

Get all of your bloggie buddies...on both sides of the economic argument...and call a NATIONAL STRIKE. The papers won't do it. The media won't do it.

Call for it! See what happens. If the turn out is small, it's a start. Wait a month....and call another one.

But you wont'. Know why? Cause then you'll lose your advertisers.

Naahh. We'll just sit here. All of us. Middle Americans on the right and the left. We'll sit here with our righteous indignation and jerk ourselves off in the echo chambers we've created.

If you're looking for role models, try looking beyond Gandhi, and don't hold them too a standard that NO ONE can meet. MLK, JFK, RFK...they all had faults, but at least we got progress...some level of crumbs from them and their work. And remember...Malcolm X, Jimmy Hoffa....they got results too. Maybe it wasn't pretty, but hell...the fruits of their labor are all around us....in the process of being picked away.

Sit there being shocked and whining how "oooh...it's wrong"...and get your head handed to you.

30 years of this bullshit. 30 years of declining wages, destroyed jobs, and an ever declining standard of living.

Are we EVER going to get serious about this?

Vote GOP and move forward to the 18th Century.

Here's another suggestion.

Want to get Washington's attention.

Get 5,000 people to camp out on the Beltway at 8AM on a Monday morning.

Trust me, you'll get noticed.

They used to call it civil disobedience. Look it up.

Vote GOP and move forward to the 18th Century.

Or maybe we can just invite Nancy Pelosi back to lie to us.

Lynne Woolsey is very popular in her district, my district. She has an established solid progressive record. It would be silly to expend energy trying to toss her for hosting a fundraiser with warmongering, civil rights abusing Bachmann-lite Harman when there is not a good alternative in sight.

I do think she should be confronted with Jane harman's record and encouraged to fundraise for Democrats with better records.

Let's send a harshly worded letter!

Vote GOP and move forward to the 18th Century.

and I am totally disgusted with her.

Abbybwood's picture

If you are truly "TOTALLY DISGUSTED WITH HER".....

Then there's only one thing to do.

Go file to run against her.

First thing Monday morning.

As a DEMOCRAT (hopefully you are registered as a Democrat).

That's the way people like her should be treated.

As a matter of fact, I think I may be on to something here.

We should get HUNDREDS of Democrats to run against Woolsey and Harman and Conyers and Pelosi and the entire freakin' House of Representatives and the third of the Senate who are up for re-election!!!

And BOXER!!!!

YEAH!!! Her too.

We need to send the Democratic Party a message that will render them speechless! That will make them STUTTER!

ALL the Democrats who have stabbed a knife into the collective backs of "Main Street America" need to be challenged politically.

We need to stop RE-ACTING and start ACTING!!!!!

every time I do, I just get some block letter e-mail response saying how they appreciate my concern. It's like calling tech support, and waiting for over an hour to get helped as every 5 minutes I get a little message saying "your call is very important to us, please stay on the line and.." well you all know the rest.

The progressives in the Democratic party need to tell the moderates "look, you're going to get tagged as being liberal anyway because there's a 'D' after your name, so why don't you just embrace it and let's get things done." Also, Democrats need to learn that this "if we govern from the middle we'll win," attitude of theirs isn't working. They move to the "middle" which continues to move further to the right because the Republican Party continues to move further to the right (which I assume they will do in order to pull in the Tea Party wackos to get money and votes from them again). I'll be 30 this year and by the time I'm 40, at this rate, Democrats of 2020 will look like the Republicans of 2000 if they keep this up.

I want to go vote for Democrats because their infinitely better still than Republicans, but with this kind of crap continuing to go on, I feel as apathetic as many of the people I work with do - the same kind of crap continues whether we vote or not, so who cares?
