Report: Schwarzenegger considered leaving GOP
By SilentPatriot Tuesday Feb 24, 2009 4:00pm
According to Schwarzenegger biographer Joe Mathews, the Governator was seriously considering ditching the GOP a few months ago.
A few months ago, Arnold Schwarzenegger and a few close associates discussed whether he should leave the Republican Party, according to two people familiar with the conversation. His friend Mike Bloomberg, the New York mayor, had become an independent. Maybe Schwarzenegger should, too. But the governor and his people quickly concluded that Californians already saw him as independent of the Republican Party. So what would be the point of a switch? (A spokesman for the governor declined comment.)
Arnold is far from a model politician, but he has always struck me as far too pragmatic and insufficiently insane to be a Republican. What say you?

I say we meet him 1/2 way and he can just leave politics!
Nah, the gops wouldn't refund his dues so he left the human race instead.
You mean leave the GOP to become an "independant" like Joe Leiberman? Gotcha. >;)
The "I" that follows his name does not stand for Independent :-)
Who could blame him if he did leave the republican party? I can think of about a zillion reasons I would leave had I been a member of the republican party. The party looks foolish, out of date, and right now it seems to be largely a party of spoiled children who if they can't have candy, they don't want anyone else to have any either.
I don't think that's the point. If you read or listen to his BS during the beginning of the Bush Admin, he was COMPLETELY on "their" side... Pro War, Pro Tax Cuts for the Wealthy. He towed the party line completely.
I say the repubs would mock dems for their hollywood politicians.
Does anyone really care what the repigs think? They complain about everything.
I'm just saying what they'd do.
Schwarzenegger was an integral part of Cheney's secret "Energy Task Force" meetings. He colluded with Ken Lay and other power pirates to bilk the taxpayers of $9billion.
That was before he became Governator. What he's done to my state of California since then has obviously been disasterous.
Yes!!! I agree!
I can only assume he was on Cheney's Energy Task Force for one of two reasons:
A) The bonehead volunteered to come because he thought it was going to be about protein shakes, or
B) He was consulted out of consideration for the fact that his dumbass Hummer consumes half the gas that's consumed in Khaliforniya.
I think Arnold was on the board of directors of Enron, back when they were over inflating electric bills and robbing the Californians. I really can't believe he could actually win any election in CA, but he did for Governor. (sounds like a republican to me, rob your constituents while making them think your helping.)
His Hummer runs on Veggie oil or Bio-diesel.
He does seem to stand for a liberal Californian value set, which would make him more democrat.
I say the robber real Nazi womanizer should step out of politics, maybe move to Pennsylvania or some redneck state where he would be more at home.
It never really suited him. I think being part of the Kennedy clan has changed him too.
I'd say that the GOP suits Schwarzenegger just fine.
You can't choose your parents, after all.
And you might want to reconsider that "son of a Nazi" nonsense, anyway. You DO realize that particular slur also covers millions of people living in Germany and the surrounding areas, right? Perhaps you've forgotten the basic Nazi philosophy - join or die...
I don't follow his career that closely, but he does not appear to be as inasane as the others, and I have no idea if he's good or bad.
It's because Ahnold's turning into a girly-man right before our eyes. Just look at that baby-blue necktie! Next thing you know it'll turn pink.
Okay, Ahnold has his problems, but I've appreciated his brand of politics.
He has some bad ideas and some dodgy connections, but so does everyone in power. At the end of the day, he makes the effort to gubernate, he avoids cheap shots and he listens.
Compared to every other hack in the GOP today, he's frickin' Teddy Roosevelt and Ike rolled into one.
He's never seemed quite as crazy as the rest of them.
And I agree with the above poster who said something about how if the Dems had a Hollywood star in office, they'd be the butt of all the Reps' jokes.
I dare the Reps to say they wouldn't ridicule Janeane Gerofalo or one of the members of the band Green Day if they got into an elected office.
Of course, the Reps are known for lying, so...
But yes, they glorify the fact that they have the Ahnold on their side, but god forbid an actor express a viewpoint contrary to theirs, becaue then they must be a partisan hack!!!
Ugh.
He became a Republican long after the Goldwater Revolution in '64, so I say screw him.
He might not be considered ideologically pure by the standards of the post-Reagan GOP, but he's courted and kow-towed to them for his own political gain. If we were talking about Nelson Rockefeller, Jerry Ford or any number of other old-school, rock-ribbed Republicans, and had seen his party taken over by right-wing zealots, I'd be inclined to cut him some slack. But he knew who he was aligning himself with from the get-go.
Sometimes I think he's not so bad. Trying to turn the state green . Which can give him an appearance of being somewhat progressive.
But it's all an act. He's still a GOPer to the core.
Check this out.
Seems like he's questioning his faith in that good old laissez faire free market economy now.
Another.
Good lord. the people in that crowd seem insane when they cheer for drivel like that.
Says more about them than it does about him, who just looks like a boob in these clips.
... expose his shortcomings.
I heard he already did years ago in gay porn.
Arnie is a thug... pure and simple. When he got in office (he was Enron's fave candidate... against Issa), he tried to govern the way he saw Bush "governing..." very much my way or the highway. Then he went after the Nurses Union in Ca... and they creamed him with a lot of Californian Support.
I doubt if they brought any humility to the large-headed megalomaniac... but he then decided to govern more from the middle. He's still a cog for Special Interests.
He's a profiteering mercenary who feels the Right Wing is on it's last legs and he doesn't want to be insignificant. So what would you do? Move to the left maybe?
Look at his record and his clumsy "speeches" in front of the Press. He is NOT to be trusted.
He's also a "star" who plays the worst brad of Politics. He called Davis a "girlyman" because he couldn't get the State Congress to okay a budget... now who's the girlyman?
Arnie is ambition. Whatever it takes. But, if he's still a republican now he always will be.
He doesn't know much about politics. He was elected only becuase he was a well-known actor. I believe the term is face recognition. Anyways, his Republican handlers have been wisper things in his ears. Everytime he follows their advice; he gets himself in trouble.
It's really a matter of you put me in power so I owe you; but, everytime you ask me for something it causes trouble for me.
Actually it's name recognition in politics, however, you're right, celebrity won't hoit.
He want's to be re-elected. Won't happen if he stays in the GOP.
Yikes! Look at Maria back there! She's looking more and more like The Joker from Batman every day.
As a Californian, I have never like Ahnold. I think he came to power dishonestly, and his major objective is to make life better for corporations. That said, he is nowhere near as bad as Wilson or the Dukester. He is only marginally worse than Davis. Can't hold a candle to Jerry Brown, though (and if you can't hold a candle to Jerry Brown, then you must be a really dim bulb). But I believe he did as much to face up to climate change as any other politician in his position would have done, so he hasn't been the total disaster I feared. Though why he vetoed the gay marriage bill the legislature passed even though he claims to support gay marriage is beyond me; after all, if you don't want the courts to decide the issue, then legislation is the only other route. So maybe he's just a girly man who's afraid to stand up to his supporters.
what say we ask him to call himself what he is...
inept and imcompetent...like a repig, he has destroyed
california's economy.
Arnie to gop:
"COME with me if you want to live!"
Yah.
Ain't that jahl?
Or in Texas, y'all.
It's "Come MIT me if you want to live!"
I still want Schwarzenegger to quite politics and star as Herman Munster with Udo Kier as Granpa, and Isabella Adjani as Lilly.
He'd make a great Herman!!!!! But couldn't Maria be Lilly now?
An attractive woman is needed
You know a MILF.
Additionally, Isabella played the neck of choice in Nosferatu: Phantom der Nacht, a remake of Nosferatu: Eine Symphonie des Grauens.
And Udo Kier, of course, was Andy Warhol's Dracula.
As this thread once again demonstrates, you don't need to be a Republican to be a misogynist asshat, but it helps.
I haven't gone to a misogynist parlor in years.
That's right, for men to merely discuss attractive women is sexist. Give me a @%^#*%! break.
To me Maria Shriver is looking anorexic, not something to encourage.
Remember when they tried to blame women's anorexia on men, like that's what we wanted, when actually the average guy still idealizes the Marilyn Monroe form?
he wants, Democrat, Republican, Nazi, Independent, Neo-Socialist, Neo-Con - anything at all......except a candidate for President of the US.
I disagree.
I do think that he is sufficiently insane to be a Republican.
Cracked.
Nutty.
Weird.
Flakey.
and
kinda dumb.
What else do we need?
But no other politician in Caulifournya has a specific plan to prevent the rise of the machines.
I thought that was Jimini Cricket.
Let's hope he doesn't have to saddle up next to Bale this time.
I'd love to see him in the next installment.
The Governator has had moments of tension with the Republican Party, especially on social issues. I know he was embarrassed by the whole Prop. 8 thing. Personally, I wonder why he got into politics in the first place. Guy like him, with money and star power, could move things from behind the scenes and not take all this flack.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nI7gzXz1cHo
He didn't think he'd get any flack. He's a star. He was in it for the GLORY. Look how Reagan is idolized.
I think Gov. Arnold is an opportunist, that believes the balance of power has shifted away from the GOP, but beyond that, the proposed move means nothing. There would be no shift in ideology.
His ideology doesn't really seem to match up with most modern republicans as it is. I don't see any reason to say he's an opportunist that would switch parties to retain power.
No matter how you cut it, he's never been in sync with the modern Republican party. Maybe because the 'modern' party walked away from the traditional Republican values many years ago. In most respects, he's seemed more like a fiscal-conservative Democratic.
you could be right.
For all the crap Arnold gets, and for all the stories I've heard about him (I can't think of one good one), when I listen to him give interviews... he doesn't sound half bad.
BS, Schwarzenegger is a flaming two faced Liar. Watch how he goes which ever way the winning team blows. He'll become a wingnut again if a Republican (OMG NO) ever becomes President.
Trust me, it's for the children...
As far as i'm concerned the guy is a mercenary. He 'considered' changing sides ...but didn't.
If he is at all bothered by the politics of the Right he should leave them.
If he can't decide, he shouldnt be there.
Whichever way the wind is blowing.... i'd say.
I have plenty of GOP friends are pragmatic and particularly sharp on the subject of politics. I dont think you mean that Schwartzenegger is too pragmatic and sane to be a GOP.
I think you mean he's too pragmatic and sane to be a GOP politician/pundit. :-D
Hey we could have had my congress-critter, (Cr)Issa. I"m not standing up for Aunuld, but, he pisses off the wing-nutz in my family. So he must be doing somethinx right.
I think it is just as simple as Arnold fell into a crowd of republicans and somehow thinks he fits in.
He falls for some tripe that republicans are principled and of course most of all, He adores Reagan. what he knows of him.
People like Rush appeals to Arnold's inner prime mate side.
I think Arnold will grow out of it. As he learns from Governing, he finds out that it is work and it is a job about the states citizens and not the republican party. He can still distinguish that he doesn't quite fit in with the Limbaughs and larry Craigs.
Arnold ran as a Republican because that was the ticket that gave him the support. Now that Obama is in office he wants in on it. Simple .... Arnold will do anything to further his own ambitions. Which makes him a Republican at the core no matter what party he says he's from.
Sorry, Arnold, but after being a Bush Hugger, you only get "Kudos" when you
actually LEAVE the Republican Obstructionist Party.

"Total Recall" is the popular 1990 science fiction film that helped make Arnold a box office star.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Total_Recall
"Total Recall II" is needed to end Arnold's political career in California.
Schwarzenegger's misdeeds and economic sins dwarf those of former governor Gray Davis, who was recalled by the voters of California in 2003, and replaced by Arnold.
By the "Gray Davis standard," Arnold deserves recall and removal from office.
Will this happen? Not a chance. Plus—I hate to admit it—I like the guy much more now than I did when I voted against him.
Am I nuts?

Even he can plainly see just how ignorant his sick, uncaring party is.
Arnold has many views that are shared with liberals and his repulican counterparts do not embrace them. Step across the aisle now arnie, the dems and liberals will welcome you with open arms. my only thought, what took you so long. i can only surmise that it took this long for you to really see what hypocrites the right wing party really is. JOin us now.
Arnie is humping for the presidency. He needs to get the laws changed so he can qualify. The Repigs (Orin Hatch) actually introduced a bill somewhere along the way to do just that but unless they sneaked it into another 3000 page bill it didn't pass.
In any case Arnie will kiss whichever behind that he thinks will get what he wants.
No matter what he calls himself the bottom line is that he is a Republican butt kissing liar.
