Bunning Accepts Deal, The Filibuster's Over

I don't think this mean old snake is used to being under the gun like this. I'm glad it's finally over:

Sen. Jim Bunning’s (R-Ky.) one-man filibuster ended on Tuesday.

Bunning agreed to stop blocking legislation to extend benefits and COBRA health plan subsidies to the unemployed after Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) agreed to allow him a vote on an amendment to pay for the $10 billion bill.

It’s the same deal Bunning was offered last week, but Bunning at the time decided to continue his fight. He’d been holding up an extension of the benefits since Thursday.

However, 205,000 households will now face delays in their unemployment checks. Thanks, Jim!

Unlimited war and tax breaks for the rich. Sadly for him, he failed to convince enough people to screw the poor, sick and elderly as much as he would have liked, but two out of three ain't bad.

Democrats do not have any balls, which is a good thing, because they lack spines needed to support these balls.

How do I know this? Many intelligent commenters here at C&L repeat it endlessly. Hey, it works for FOX, why not the C&L commentariat.

205,000 families who have had their unemployment misery added to by this bastard. All that additional misery to satisfy this one man's spiteful, mean ego. What a crime. What a crime that this cruelty could be allowed to occur by the rest of the Senate.

The Senate allows this cruelty to occur in the name of it's outdated parlimentary rules. The Senators, Democrats and Republicans alike, have this fantasy that the Senate is some sort of great deliberative body. It's not. When was the last time anything of substance was debated there? When was the last time anybody's mind was changed about anything due to Senate debate and deliberation? 1968?

They're a bunch of vain, puffed-up, out-of-touch phony's whose insistence on holding their undemocratic, outdated parlimentary rules above the needs of the people is dragging the country further and further into a ditch.

The Senate needs to change it outdated, backward rules, period.

AMEN!!!

NOBODY 2012

It is based on a quote from a link to Chris Bowers at Open Left. Here is his quote:

Andrew Stettner of NELP says that, no matter what, some 205,000 people won't get a check this week, since it takes anywhere from two to six weeks for the states to get their bureaucracies geared up. "We've already crossed the Rubicon. Now, we have to play catch-up," he says.

Why would it take two to six weeks for states to do what they have been doing all along? If it takes them this long, a lot of state unemployment officials should be joining the ranks of the unemployed too.

....say exactly why it shouldn't take two weeks due the disruption this mean old coot caused, but because you say so, Bowers is the one who is BSing. C'mooon, man; you can do better.

I'm just superstitious enough to hedge my bets.

ricky's picture

is not Bowers. He is repeating unchallenged what Mr. Stettner says.
I am challenging why it takes state agencies two to six weeks to deal
with a two or three day delay.

“Why would anyone with a functioning brain believe this guy?”
Some guy with an eating disorder

The point is that this cruelty is allowed to occur thanks to the Senates ridiculous, outdated parlimentary rules.

This delay has changed nothing politically. It has added to the misery of those people who will have their unemployment checks interrupted. And for what? To stroke this bitter old man's ego, that's what for.

And the real shame lies in the rest of the Senators allowing, hell celebrating, this insanity.

Great deliberative body my ass. Great body of out of callous, arrogant, touch with reality assholes is more like it.

The need for a House of Lords to represent states which were not part of the country when the constitution was written is an anachronism longin need of revisiting.

Mutton Jeff's picture

Hey, your delay to accept the same deal that was offered last week just cost the states a sh!tpile more money in administrative costs when they can least afford it. Yes sir, there's nothing like stopping and starting a program to throw bureaucracies into turmoil, cost extra money, and throw some fear into those damn unemployed layabouts while they eat their bon-bons and wait for their welfare checks.

Or, to put it more succinctly, you're a dick, Jim.

joannew's picture

Not a cave by Reid at all--just a quick vote to get it over with, with everybody knowing Bunning would lose.

This was all the fault of Bunning, not the Democrats and not Reid. Some people criticize the Democratic leadership when they, the critics, have no idea what the Senate rules allow. For example, the earlier criticism here that Reid could have forced a vote Friday--he could not, because he was calling for the bill to be considered out of order (the sequence of when it would normally be considered) and that requires unanimous consent.

Reid has to fight every day against this party of no--I support him in this nearly-impossible job.

Bunning and America were sort of like a gay couple. Bunning was pitching and America, bent over, was catching.

. . . was it good for you, Jim?

Falmouth's picture

I caught the end of Hardball last night and Tweety stood up for Bunning. I was shocked and I'm sure he will catch s for it. He said that America should have to pay for things not just borrow for everything. Seems he missed that this was not the issue on which to make this point. What a loser.

Maybe someone pointed out to Bunning that characterizing unemployment payments as a disincentive to work wasn't nearly as accurate as characterizing them as a disincentive to loot and riot and that the real disincentive to work was the fact that there are no jobs, that those jobs were shipped overseas.

is that goofs like Bunning need to be placed, face-to-face, with the very people he's hurt, with the understanding that no security will be present to protect his elitist Rethug ass. After all, he's placed their well-being (and in many cases, lives) in jeopardy with his actions; why shouldn't he get a little taste?
