My, they do take the Big Brass Ones award! They still don't get it. This country is so close to the edge, and they've decided to take it all the way over. (Maybe they figure workers should cover potential liability from their crappy nuclear power plants?) Mike Elk at Think Progress:

Last week, the New York Times reported that, despite making $14.2 billion in profits, General Electric, the largest corporation in the United States, paid zero U.S. taxes in 2010 and actually received tax credits of $3.2 billion dollars. The article noted that GE’s tax avoidance team is comprised of “former officials not just from the Treasury, but also from the I.R.S. and virtually all the tax-writing committees in Congress.”

After not paying any taxes and making huge profits, ThinkProgress has learned that General Electric is expected to ask its nearly 15,000 unionized employees in the United States to make major concessions.

This year, 14 unions representing more than 15,000 workers will negotiate a new master contract with General Electric. Among the major concessions GE has signaled that it will ask of union workers is the elimination of a defined contribution benefit pension for new employees, a move the company has already implemented for its non-union salaried employees. Likewise, GE is signaling to the union that it will ask for the elimination of current health insurance plans in favor of lower quality health saving accounts, a move the company has already implemented for non-union salaried employees as well.

In addition, General Electric may ask some workers for a wage freeze. Since the recession began in 2007, GE threatened to close plants in Schenectady, NY and Louisville, KY unless workers took wage concessions and adopted two-tier wage structure. In an interview with ThinkProgress, Mark Haller, a machinist at General Electric locomotive factory in Erie, PA, said:

The company I work for paid no federal taxes last year, but we all get these mass emails from GE asking us to call our Congressman to fund the useless, alternative GE engine for the F-35. As taxpayers, we are subsidizing the profits of this company to a huge extent and now after making the company even more profitable, they are asking us to make concessions on pensions, benefits, and perhaps even wages. You wonder why there is a jobs crisis in this country with a guy like G.E. CEO Jeff Immelt heading the President’s Jobs Commission.

In 2003, union workers at 16 different General Electric factories engaged in a strike when G.E. proposed to cut their health care. Workers are mobilizing again this year. They have planned a rally that is expected to attract 10,000 workers from all over the country at the General Electric Locomotive Factory in Erie, PA on June 4th.

"Great minds discuss ideas; average minds discuss events; small minds discuss people." ~ Eleanor Roosevelt

Once a company starts down this path they tend to push it to the hilt. If you currently work for GE think about taking an early retirement. If you are too young for retirement then start looking for a job somewhere else. If they are successful at bullying you they will continue until they go out of business. They will go out of business because the best and the brightest will leave first to work for their competitors. And this will continue until only the unmotivated dead wood is left. At which point their competitors will be cleaning their clocks.

"they will go out of business..".........ain't they like the biggest co. in the world, real big anyway....they can absorb alot.

Let's be honest with ourselves. Our milquetoast president, President Obama, doesn't really like unions. He will take their campaign donations and he will take their sizable get out the vote efforts, but he doesn't like unions. That's why he didn't march with the protesters in Wisconsin, that's why he supported Blanche Lincoln even when the unions supported her primary opponent and that's why he supports "merit" pay for teachers. He just doesn't like unions.

So, does it come as any surprise that President Obama would have as his Jobs Commission chair Jeffrey Immelt? It sure as hell isn't about GE's proxy war with Koch Industries. No, its because both men will be happy if the unions are broken.

We need to mobilize around good candidates. I wish Howard Dean would have won.

Dr. Dean was a great candidate in 2004, but the media didn't want him to the Democratic nominee. They preferred Senator Kerry.

it was the powers that be, the oligarchy, that wanted Kerry to be the candidate. Dean would have won. Notice how they made Kerry look like a war protester and Bush they covered up his AWOL activities? It was more than the media behind all of that.

Unless I'm mistaken, the vast majority of us have been the victims of a wage freeze for the last 30 years or so.

At what point does the majority of Americans finally say "Enough is Enough!!" I have always felt Americans were far too wimpy and under control to get angry enough about anything, enough to revolt. However, as time goes on I can see, quite easily actually, how it could indeed happen right here. Where's the damned line start??

Hey Obama, are you looking for a baby sitter? How about hiring the neighborhood child molester, it would make as much sense as your hiring of Immelt for your worthless Jobs Commision.

All this serves to do is prove that when you give some people an inch -- especially if they have plenty already -- they'll do everything they can to take a mile if they think they can get away with it.

I think the reason we are heading faster and faster towards a crash is that the unregulated major corporations are in control, not people. Each unregulated major corporation is operating autonomously, looking out for itself, oblivious to anything else but it's own bottom line - no soul, no conscience, no companion, no remorse, no regrets.

No single super rich executive or investor that rakes in the money from the corporations can do anything about the corporations or the crash to come, and has every reason to make as much money as possible before the crash. We can't blame the super rich for this behavior.

Our only hope to prevent this crash is with government regulation. With government regulation we may be able to slowly pull up and out of this dive bomb and achieve level flight again. The corporations are not human but the super rich are, and they are still reachable.

We can still convince the super rich of this truth, that financial and corporate regulation is an absolute necessity to prevent their extinction, and the extinction of the corporations that sustains them.

The unions should make GE an offer: we'll accept wage cuts equal to half GE's 2010 federal tax liability if they will in turn give workers one-quarter any refunds GE receives from the Feds based on their 2010 taxes...

All I could think was, "Fine, lower the corporate tax rate but tax dividends and capital gains as ordinary income and we have a deal!"

The appointment of G.E. CEO Jeff Immelt to head the President’s Jobs Commission is just further proof that Obama is only interested in being part of the elite. From the pat on the shoulder of US Chamber of (Horrors) Commerce CEO Donohue to the blow jobs for Wall Street CEOs, he is a disaster for the rest of us.

The democrats are delusional if they run this flaming turd again. As P Justice said, Obama hates unions.

What do you call a candidate that is disliked by 70% of his former supporters? A loser.
