The EPA Charade
The Philadelphia Inquirer's been running a good series about the toothless, indifferent and possibly even criminally negligent EPA:
CHARLESTON, Tenn. - In January 2005, residents near the chlorine plant here discovered that it was the biggest mercury emitter in the state. Environmentalists warned them against eating fish from their beloved Hiwassee River.
They appealed to the plant's owners, Olin Corp., to do what 100 other chlorine producers had done: abandon a 19th-century process that emits tons of the dangerous neurotoxin. Olin refused.
In fall 2005, the Environmental Protection Agency weighed in - but not to take up the cause of residents.
Instead, EPA called Olin with an offer. Would the Charleston plant like to be enrolled in Performance Track, an elite green club of the nation's most environmentally progressive companies?
In return, Olin could expect regulatory breaks, such as fewer inspections and loosened requirements on hazardous waste disposal, not to mention positive publicity.
Sherry Neidich, who has lived half her life a mile downriver from Olin's plant, was stunned.
"The EPA is a toothless dog," she said. "What right does someone have to ruin my river? To poison our playground?"
Ah yes, the beloved Republican myth of self-regulating industries! So far, that's worked... where? And guess what the Inquirer found?
Despite offering members regulatory breaks and promoting the program as one that improves environmental performance, the EPA fails to independently verify that Performance Track companies actually reach their goals.
Some Performance Track members have paid fines to settle EPA accusations that they broke environmental rules. Since 2003, they have racked up more than 100 violations and paid $15.25 million in fines - including $10.25 million paid by DuPont Co. for allegedly failing to provide information to the EPA about the health effects of a pollutant one of its plants spilled into drinking water.
At least a dozen Performance Track members have actually increased the amount of toxic chemicals they pump into the air and water.
The program has spent millions on publicity, but has become so desperate for new members that it has turned to gift shops and post offices with trivial environmental impact to pad its numbers.
The EPA insists that the program - which now numbers 548 members ranging from Fortune 500 companies to trailer parks - is a success. The 42 newest members, inducted this fall, include a Maker's Mark distillery, a veterans center, two municipal incinerators, and a Philip Morris cigarette plant.
Since 2001, the EPA said, Performance Track members report that they have reduced greenhouse gas emissions by 310,000 tons, saved 3.7 billion gallons of water, and cut non-hazardous waste equivalent to that generated by 553,000 households.
Well, if they said it, it must be so!

The Federal EPA under Bushco is a fraud and a joke--little more than extension of profit obsessed Corporate America who would willingly trade away the beauty of our land for a few pieces of silver and greater EPS.
The cowards who perpetuated this fraud should be made to either live in the nest that the fouled or clean it up themselves.

It's what you get when you allow filthy lying greedy scum into the whitehouse and government!
...on being the most Republican County in all Tennessee.
The reddest of the red!
Election results for Bradley Co. Tenn.
2000:
Bush- 20,167
Gore- 8,768
2004:
Bush- 25,942
Kerry-9,426
2008:
74.2% McCain
24.5% Obama
So Ms/Mrs. Neidich is "stunned" she tells us.
Yet this same county keeps voting for the same party of asshats that could give 2 shits about the ruination of their environment.
When we are all twitching in our last throes, poisoned from environmental degradation which will know no boundaries, where do these people think they will live.
Or their children.
statusquObama, change you can only pretend in
of course...
They won't be out among the Lumpen-proles.
Seriously. I've heard my rich white brother-in-law go off one too many times. These people believe their money will protect them and theirs. Maybe the stock market crash and the ol' Democratic wealth re-distribution will change this by diminishing their hoard.
I doubt it.
In the not so distant future when US environmental poisoning starts to kill off people by the thousands, it will all be blamed on the Obama administration.

Andrew Sullivan Is A Fraud
Was telling everyone the air was safe to breath at Ground Zero so they could open up the Stock Market after 9/11. Thousands of first responders got sick and are dying from breathing that air. And with all the pseudo patriot talk out of this administration, health care for these brave citizens has been denied. It is one case that drives me nuts how few people want to know about it. Fuck the fake patriotism shit. Get after the truth.
Let us never forget that this happened under the Republicans watch.
You remember how all of them Rolled over for Bush. This whole issue needs to be put on there shoulders. What a bunch of Crimminals that
would let these Corporations Poison our Kids and destroy our Earth
for a Buck. Any one who would Vote for these Turds is beyond help.

On my drive home tonight, I heard that the EPA just announced that they will be posting a list of the worst criminal polluters, some of whom have fled the country to escape prosecution. The news item (from WBBM780 chicago) also stated that some of the are executives of companies that have been cited before.
The EPA needs to be investigated by the new congress. Period.
Ms. Neidich may not be one of the morans in TN who keep voting their abusers into office. Too bad it's not just the morans but their kids who are going to pay a heavy price for mercury pollution. Meanwhile, the EPA's actions sound like criminal negligence to me. Wonder how it sounds to the Obama admin.?
I think Bush was raped by a tree at some point in his life. It could only explain the utter contempt he has for the environment.
Tennessee is an environmental and political disaster area. In addition to the Olin plant, the Charleston/Calhoun area had a problem with semis full of hazardous chemical waste parking on Interstate 75 and dumping their loads into the adjoining pastures and drainage ditches. Bowater, a paper plant catering to the newspaper industry, spreads sulfurous fumes for miles.
The Oak Ridge nuclear research facilities, where the Hiroshima and Nagasaki bombs were created, used 5-gallon metal drums to store the nuclear wastes, then stored them in wet caves or plowed them into mass graves. These now leach into groundwater and the cancer rate is underreported and appallingly high--you have to live in the region or have relatives there to find out anything. One of my distant cousins was fired from a newspaper for trying to get the word out on this problem.
And Chattanooga, home to the new VW auto plant--is starting a community garden on the surface of their Superfund site, presumably to poison their poor so they can cut their welfare budget. And, yes, the region is GOP, run by relatives of current and past national Rethug leadershipa. What Illinois demonstrates in Demo corruption is equaled and maybe even surpassed by GOP rottenness in the Appalachians.
1-Bechtel is building a new unit on the Watts Bar Nuclear Power Plant. This is the same Bechtel who constructed a power plant in Palatka, FL with concrete so soft and cavernous as to be deemed a safety hazard by the testing company which was allowed to supervise the construction, but not to shut down the site for safety flaws. This is courtesy of my then-husband, who was there, had no reason to lie about it, and stayed as far out of Palatka as he could after the plant went online.
2--Blagojevich's wife is a Mell from the Bell South Mel(l) Whites who brought you multi-million dollar loot for Rahm Emanuel. This bunch originally hails from Athens, TN and is of unparalleled corruption, running communications control in half a dozen venues including the Postal Service.
