Government officials have declared a public health emergency in connection with the swine flu outbreak that has killed dozens in Mexico and sickened 20 in the U.S., said the nation’s director of Homeland Security Sunday.
Secretary Janet Napolitano also said border agents have been directed to begin passive surveillance of travelers from affected countries, with instructions to isolate anyone who appears actively ill with suspected influenza.
The number of cases confirmed in the United States by the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is now 20, including eight New York City high school students. Other cases are in Ohio, California, Texas and Kansas. Patients have ranged in age from 7 to 54.
Government health officials expect to see more cases of swine flu here, including possibly serious infections, a senior CDC official said.

The first swine flu outbreak was NOT in Fort Dix. The first identified outbreak was the 1918 "Spanish flu" epidemic. (Identified many years after the fact, because the sort of testing necessary didn't exist at the time, but whatever.)
The Fort Dix "outbreak" did not kill 13 soldiers. 13 were seriously ill, 1 died - and to this day, it's debatable whether his death was a direct result of the flu. This is the only death attributed to the virus. (It's likely that the Hsw1N1 virus was no more than a contributing factor.) And of the illnesses tracked at Fort Dix, I believe all but 1 actually had antibodies to TWO distinct flu viruses in their systems, so there's no way to know which influenza actually caused their illness.
It's not entirely accurate to say the government "forced a questionable vaccine on the population." A vaccine was rushed into production and release, but outside of military personnel, no one was forced to take it. But the vaccine HAS been blamed for a number of deaths and serious illnesses, more than is usually associated with a new vaccine. (Still a relatively small percentage of the people vaccinated, but being a "small percentage" is no comfort to the family.)

Nothing to see here really. This is all standard issue response to a potentially serious health threat. All the "state of emergency" does is mobilize a variety of resources and a detailed monitoring program. They are just prepping in case the need it. I realize that after the last 8 years actual emergency preparedness feels kind of alien. Of course the MSM are hysterically hyperventilating that we are all going to die.

At this point we don't know if it will be serious or not. It clearly is very serious in Mexico, where it hit first. The US cases, however, all seem to be fairly mild. I think the government is simply exercising due diligence in case it turns out like Mexico. May not be needed, but better to have it in place if it is. Rather a dramatic change from the previous regime's incompetency.

First, The NYT says there is no data on whether the current flu shot works or doesn't with this one. Could be another example of crap TV causing hysteria for ratings.
Second, I admit not paying attention this weekend but last I heard the deaths were all in Mexico. That could say more about the public health and medical facilities of Mexico than it does about the lethality of this strain.
So, yeah. We can't tell at this point. The most deadly effect of this flu outbreak might be giving torture a break in American culture.

New influenza strains appear all the time; it's what influenza does. The virus jumps species, combines and recombines with relative ease. That's why the recommendation to have a flu shot every year - it's not the same vaccine every year. (It's just harder than hell to explain that concept, especially with a media addicted to the 15 second soundbite, so that's something seldom mentioned.)

Why is it being referred to as just swine flu? I thought it is a strain that contains DNA from swine/avian/human?Is it to maintain some sort of control on the populace?We want them to be concerned but not panicked?I know its all about containing this but its origins are still too fuzzy.If we know the origins it could only help with its containment.Or are the origins already known?
