Demonstrators and counter-demonstrators at a July 14 rally in Murfreesboro TN to protest building of a mosque.

Does anyone realistically expect that this isn't going to get worse? Nope, it only takes one moron to start a chain reaction and the odds are in favor of increasing violence as long as we have Fox News egging people on:

Federal officials are investigating a fire that started overnight at the site of a new Islamic center in a Nashville suburb.

Ben Goodwin of the Rutherford County Sheriff's Department confirmed to CBS Affiliate WTVF that the fire, which burned construction equipment at the future site of the Islamic Center of Murfreesboro, is being ruled as arson.

Special Agent Andy Anderson of the federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives told CBS News that the fire destroyed one piece of construction equipment and damaged three others. Gas was poured over the equipment to start the fire, Anderson said.

The ATF, FBI and Rutherford County Sheriff's Office are conducting a joint investigation into the fire, Anderson said.

WTVF reports firefighters were alerted by a passerby who saw flames at the site. One large earth hauler was set on fire before the suspect or suspects left the scene.

The chair of the center's planning committee, Essim Fathy, said he drove to the site at around 5:30 a.m. Saturday morning after he was contacted by the sheriff's department.

"Our people and community are so worried of what else can happen," said Fathy. "They are so scared."

The fire was smoldering by the time Fathy and the center's imam, Ossama Bahloul, had arrived. Fathy was told that responders had smelled gasoline near the fire.

Just as you see in the demonstration video, there are people standing up for religious freedom:

Claire Rogers, spokeswoman for Middle Tennesseans for Religious Freedom, said the organization has planned a candlelight vigil in front of the Rutherford County Courthouse on Monday in response to the fire. The vigil, scheduled for 7 p.m., will encourage supporters and opponents of the mosque to demonstrate for a community free of violence, arson or other intimidation tactics, she said.

"We simply cannot allow the actions of a few destructive individuals to go overlooked by Rutherford County residents," Rogers said. "It's truly a shame that we have reached this point, but it is up to us to ensure the intimidation goes no further."

This post fits perfectly with your previous Tabbi post. Today it's a piece of construction equipment, tomorrow it's someone's life. Never thought I would watch the total regression of this country. Why can't the right wake up to this?

The GOP is like Walmart. Create unemployed stupid people, and you will have customers for life.
Personally I have tried to debate stupid rednecks, and if given the choice would rather be a rich GOP member than a frustrated philathopist.

You, friend, are right on the money. From what I have learned, the GOP would rather have an ignorant public - mostly because the ignorant are easier to control.

In a way, this kind of reminds me of the movie "Idiocracy", where the stupid people rule. It is scary to think that the scenario in that movie could be coming true in this day and age - right here in America.

So, what is that supposed to mean? I think most everyone there is from USA. Anyone yelling Germany, or England?

What a dumb ass chant.

Study the symptoms not the virus...

Dr. Frank Schaeffer, the celebrated author of Crazy for God, wrote: “I am a religious person, a churchgoer. Nevertheless, this one-of-a-kind book [The God Virus] is a vital reminder of the fact that we think objectively at what religion does to us.”

Fundamentalism, Aggression and Anger:
The god virus is consumed with propagation and is concerned with challenges to its supremacy. Staying on the offensive is critical to religious survival. When a religion loses its offensive edge, it begins to lose out to other more aggressive religions. The decline of mainstream Protestantism in the United States is a result of decreased aggressiveness and increased aggressiveness in competitive religious groups. Those with the best conversion programs will thrive.

You must have religion. What would society do, if all the people that were stupid enough to believe in an invisible man, suddenly realized they didn't have to be moral?

It would be an explosion of Glenn Becks.

Terrorism Sucks. They've demonized an entire religion and group of people. These people were not responsible for the Anthrax attacks. No prosecutions have been made in relation to the 9/11 attacks. We've tortured confessions out of them. We've tortured innocent people. We are stealing their resources and destroying their societies. And all the while too few journalists are standing out and calling what the fuck it is that is going on what it is.

Damn. I don't want to see this get any worse if that is possible.

probably the local american equipment rental company... these idiots can't even terrorize properly...

You know, I would LOVE to see the major media outlets track down the owner of the construction equipment. I have a beautiful mental image of an interview with someone talking how his business has been suffering, finally got this contract that was going to save jobs at his small business, keep him from losing his house to foreclosure...and now it's gone.

It began when the anti-mosque people started chanting USA in response to one of our chants of inclusion or freedom of religion or whatever....apparently they thought that chanting USA would totally sock it to us. :) Of course we started chanting USA because we support the principals our country was founded on. It was funny to see the anti-mosque crowd's look of confusion when we joined in lol. I guess they thought we must have been anti-american and all since we were supporting the 1st amendment.

The 2 most intolerant religions on Earth getting into a pissing contest. Never would of saw that 1 coming. All I can say is that I hope they both lose.

Then Giuliani, Limbought, Beck and O'Reilley along with Palin and Bachmann can spend a whole lot of time building ratings denying their culpability for the deaths of innocents.

Wow, the pig ignorance displayed by the people who committed this crime and the people who have committed countless others in the name of whatever nonsense these people believe in.

And one day we (sane America) will maybe stand up and do something to stop this stupidity (I'm not sure how exactly but I am really open to ideas and i feel that if enough of us speak out at least we could maybe educate some small percentage of the crazy and stupid people who are listening to other crazy stupid people) and we could stop this kind of ignorance from spreading any further.

And I know Glen Schmeck will come out and say "it's not me, I just said this hateful/fearful shit, but I don't control people" and he will go on his merry way spewing his hate and fear without any consequence. and the rest of America will just let it happen again and again.

Yes these people are horrible, but we can't wait for them to stop and we can't wait for the Democrats to stand up to them, and we can't wait for the media to expose them for the frauds they are. It's up to us, the thinkers, to do something to correct our country and to counter the misinformation that has made all the crazy people crazy.

Fox and talk radio keeps ratcheting up the rhetoric on these "controversial" mosques and the inevitable will happen. Today it's a fire and some gunshots. Tomorrow? The dead will be on Glenn Beck and companies hands.

The first amendment couldn't be clearer on this issue. It's such a no-brainer. It just boggles the mind that we are even having this conversation. Shame on the person who started that fire.

Was there an attack here on 9/11 as well? I missed it but apparently it must be hallowed ground where they burned this building. No? Hmmm....
