Health Insurance Industry Group Takes Out Ad To Gloat Over Death of the Public Option

Remember Conservatives for Patients’ Rights (CPR)? It's run by the icky Rick Scott and represented by the public relations firm behind the Swift Boat Veterans For Truth. And boy, are they happy over the president's lack of leadership and the refusal by Congress to offer them an alternative to the insurance monopoly:
Today, CPR has a large, nearly full-page ad in the Washington Post cheering the public option’s death. The top of the ad has a tombstone reading, “PUBLIC OPTION PLAN R.I.P. January 27, 2010.” More text from the ad:
In his State of the Union Address, the President didn’t doom his Public Option health care plan with faint praise, he simply BURIED it with deafening silence. [...]
Finally, those of us who opposed your government-run Public Option plan can close this chapter.
By educating on the perils of your government-run Public Option plan, we achieved our goals to protect patients’ rights and stop a government takeover of our health care choices. Today, we join with our fellow Americans concerned with protecting patients’ rights to celebrate that our months of hard work finally paid off.
ThinkProgress spoke to CPR spokesman Brian Burgess of CRC Public Relations, who said that the ad was running only in the Washington Post.
CPR was not reflecting the views of most “fellow Americans” in its campaign. Over the summer, there was actually strong public support for the public option. Through an aggressive campaign, the health care industry spread misinformation to create opposition.

will run this ad without any commentary to address the fact that the majority of Americans supported a public option and that it was probably in the average American's best interests.
No, they can't do that and go and offend their funders/er...I mean advertisers.
It was a phony campaign promise like some others to receive our votes..
Emanuel , Obama and the centrists never plan to have the public option or any option on the table.
You can tell by the persons they pick to write the legislation and what they said for the very start..

The day will come, make no mistake about it, when people will look at these gloating evil parasites, and extract their revenge. I hope I am around to see it.
Yes, in America we cannot have our choice of a public option. Instead, we must buy from the corporate fascists who take billions for nothing, except denying us coverage.
For millions like me who have a life threatening chronic illness, these SOB's boil my blood! They ought to rot in hell!
Rush Limbaugh is what a smart person thinks a stupid bigot sounds like.
I'm with you. My husband has had cancer 5 times and lost his leg in 2001. He still works and at the age of 58 neither of us can see retirement in our future. We live in dread that he will lose his job and his health coverage. I too hope that these greedy evil parasites wil one day feel the wrath of the rest of us who can't afford to leave our workplace to protest and lobby Washington.
I've spent over 20 years trying to educate Americans about universal health care. I lived in England for 13 years (my husband is British) and the National Health Service works. It's far superior to our system where people either go without health care and get diagnosed too late or have to sell their homes and still go bankrupt because of health care bills.
In England they also have referendums.
Retirement is not for the working class anymore... It takes away too much profit and benefits from these Global Empires...

Yeah, and who would greet you at Walmart?
Look, America!
You got punked again!
Could have passed a real health reform bill if they wish... So it looks as if they never really wanted to..
I believe we have too many Clinton centrists as Obama's advisors like Emanuel..
American voters did not vote for republican, because the wanted a change in policies which in the previous 8 years of dictatorial administration have been forced down our throats..
Now we here this BS of bipartisan and it is the phony and most deceitful statement one could make.
Do we have republicans elected into the democrat party or are they so d... weak they shake in their boots at the sight of one..
Personally I am sick of the democrats blaming the republicans when this could pass real legislation with a sinple majority..
They keep stating that the republicans are hurting themselves by them just saying "NO"...
Well the American citizens know that they can win (AS BUSH DID) with a simple majority..
What now ,,,,, have the republicans taken EVERY seat since the democrat took control of the government and has done nothing but sound like a cry-baby blaming the republicans for what they are afraid to do..
Looks as it they will not have to worrry about crying after the 2010 election the republicans will most likely control the house

Look for things to get even worse , just wait til the campaign ads start running after the Supreme farce "decision" . Given the ignorance and stupidity of the American voter and the ineptitude of the Obama administration and the Democratic party when it comes to politics and the Repugnants I'd say we are SOL . Cannot win by being pacifists , endlessly turning the other cheek and trying to talk absolute ass holes into playing fair , if this is all Obama and the Dems have ... man , we are really screwed .
didn't get what it wanted.
And his dictatorial administration certainly did...
The problem is the democrats have been recruiting , funding and electing republicans or corporate thinking persons on the democratic ticket in the primary..
Emanuel and other democrats are telling true democrat not to run because they will throw all support against them..
This is why we now have persons like the blue dogs and centrists controlling and running the democratic party..
They exclude the progressive policies and yet when the American citizens tell them they are mad at the democrats they claim it is because of the liberal legislation...
What in the h... are they calling liberal legislation,, the bailout to the banks , the expanding of the war in the middle east and it's cost, The health bill which has sold out the American citizens....
All the news media , republicans and the centrist democrats have to do is yell it's a liberal policy and that the problem when there has been no liberal policy every placed on the table since Obama and the democrats took control of the government..
Liberals are being attacked because they research the legislation which is being passed and see the lies and BS in them,, and they do not want this..
IF they think we are that dangerous and want nothing to do with us then they will not receive MY vote..

I agree with your comment about the ignorance and stupidity of the American voter. See my reply to "The day will come. . ."
If Obama and his pool of advisors really want to listen to a word we have to say...
Soon as Obama picked Emanuel and the Clinton arrogant crew I thought we were going to get screwed...
This told right away what policies and legislation they were going to try to pass..
Right from the get go Emanuel and his crew stated that they were going to more to the center which would be the center right...

to pass medicare for all or at least down to age 40. Take the vote at least and see which obstructionists need to be replaced.
Republicans are liars and simply cannot be trusted.
for all.
it's time for America to catch up to the rest of the world.
to the lobbyists that there would be no govt-run plan of any import. So there will be no expanded Medicare or public option, despite what he "says" he wants.
When you buy Medicare the payment is only a percent of the bill and you have to take another policy which guess what ,,,, It would have to be from the Private sector and they screw you with that...

I was talking to a couple from Europe, and they said these insurance criminals and corrupt politicians would be risking their lives if they tried pulling this crap in Europe with the people's health care.
Rush Limbaugh is what a smart person thinks a stupid bigot sounds like.
aren't at the LEAST out on the streets about this.
We aren't taking to the streets because we can't afford to take time off work. We can't afford to travel where we will be seen. We don't have big corporations paying for our fares like the teabaggers. God, I hate teabaggers. "Hands off my Medicare!" What a bunch of ignoramuses. They shouldn't even be allowed on the streets that they don't want to pay their taxes for.
Americans have become passive and want others to do it..
Don't your believe that the government knows that Americans will sit on the a.. and bitch , but will not get off their a.. to do anything about it..
We look for others do the actions for us...

Maybe other Americans are passive. I'm just plain angry at their stupidity. I WISH I could march and protest like I used to but I have a disabled husband and a full-time job. If I'd known 25 years ago, I would have run for public office! But I don't think I would have been elected as a left-leaning Social Democrat (and Pagan to boot!).
Our friends and family who live in England are horrified at the medical bills we have had to pay.
Now, every now and then someone in England complains about their NHS. But when they're asked "Do you want a system like they have in the U.S.?" the resounding cry is "NO NO NO!"
Some Americans (esp teabaggers) are so ignorant. They decry Socialism yet they want their public schools, public parks, public highways, police and fire departments. They want their Medicare.
And they want it all without paying taxes.
When is the last time you have seem ?your? democrats standup and fght for us...
The progressives could have drawn a line in the sand of health care but the join ranks behind Emanuel and the centrists because they were afraid of losing their jobs by doing it...

"..we achieved our goals to protect patients’ rights"
A patently ridiculous statement.
You have "achieved" precisely the opposite.
How you people live with yourselves is a mystery to me.
"To me, truth is not some vague, foggy notion. Truth is real. And,
at the same time, unreal. Fiction and fact and everything in between,
plus some things I can't remember, all rolled into one big "thing."
This is truth, to me. "

that the plutocrats are so good at.
I can't fathom it either.
They are just plain evil; and psychotic? I don't know how else to explain it?
Rush Limbaugh is what a smart person thinks a stupid bigot sounds like.
policyleft , what other explanation could there be ? You betchya they are flat out evil , as evil as any in history and capable of the same . Meanwhile the poor and middle class wing nuts too are celebrating how they defeated Obama , the Dems and "the government take over of health care", celebrating that they've screwed themselves once again .
GM school lunches. Educational material provided by one of the Bush sons who makes his living selling propaganda to schools. Corporate advertising in the schools shilling their products. Revisionist history taught. Passing students just to get rid of them. Teachers who are also victims of sub-standard education. What a system. But ignorant people are so much easier to control and direct.
those hundreds of millions of dollars of health insurance premiums on anti-health care lobbying! Imagine if they'd gone and wasted it on health care for the rubes that paid the premiums! Where would we be then?

if they're spending money on it, then they're... worried.
Awaken wee hours of Sunday morning w/severe vertigo/nausea/vomitting. Ponder: is this, or is this not an 'emergency.' Decide it probably is not, so tough-out Sunday by remaining in a reclining position all day. (Because I'm diabetic, I cannot eat because I cannot exercise; increase insulin to accommodate limited caloric intake. Don't have primary care physician.)
Monday begin calling ENT. Can schedule appointment Tuesday midday. Another 24 hour sans food/exercise. Tuesday: 60 mile round trip to ENT office; fill out history and other forms (office only retains files for 3 years). $20 co-pay, brief physical exam to confirm 'vertigo'. Instructed to schedule appointment with neurologist. Thursday begin calling neuro office--must make calls between 10-12 a.m. and 1-3 p.m. and/or leave message. By the time I realized I was not going to get to talk to a person, the phone lines were turned off . . . office closed on Friday.
Struggled through another weekend, each day experiencing a slight lessening of vertigo. Could actually walk around the house as long as the walls stayed vertical. Continued reduced calories and intense diabetes monitoring.
Monday finally connected with neuro office and scheduled appointment for Wednesday. Wednesday another 60-mile round trip/parking/paperwork and $20 co-pay. Brief exam with no time scheduled for actual testing. Told to schedule another appointment.
Appointment scheduled for Friday; results unavailable until following Monday.
Vertigo continued to lessen . . . so that by the time test results were available, I was functioning; moving enough to increase food intake; and no longer having to hang onto the walls.
Test results: inner ear problem, perhaps slight infection. Come back if/when it occurs again!
Yep, this is what I pay those dandy premiums for and consider "quality" health care! Two-plus weeks for diagnosis; no treatment (pick up some dramamine OTC if the nausea returns); co-pays, mileage, time and inconvenience which accrue ONLY to the patient. BEST in the world!

We need to cut them out!
republicanism/conservatism is a mental illness!
Good luck to you. My husband's first battle with cancer was over 20 years ago. We didn't have health insurance. It would have bankrupted us if his parents and his aunt (who lived in England) hadn't helped us pay most of his bills. They were horrified at how much it cost. We were also fortunate because my parents owned our house so we couldn't lose that. Otherwise I think we would have lost everything.
How I wish I could leave this country ... permanently .

Yeah because exactly - you would have to win the lotto to get out of here because you have spent all of your money on health insurance.
Let's face it, Americans. We are going to become a third world economy unless we can turn this government around.
My sister lives in Windsor, Ontario. Her pharmacy co-pay is thirty five cents. "You don't dare take out your debit card for that." That is what she told me last Saturday night.
mine is $2.00 (a CDN "Twoonie" coin) ...that's on what would be a $250.00 prescription. And I get Airmiles on the twoonie co-pay...

find themselves in the same handcart to hell with the tobacco execs that took out ads in the nineties urging people to write the states' attys general to drop the case against them. And the creeps who refuse to clean up Bhopal. And Exxon execs. And Ken La--aw shit the list is long, the handcart dangerously overfilled. Nothing but the best for the societal leeches.
me-oww!
is a sure way to get people into the streets. These assholes will get theirs, hopefully in the future. Because Obama is patting the health insurance companies on the back while they're screwing us.
NOBODY 2012
How fitting that the insurance industry would use a tombstone to demonstrate their contempt for the health care needs of the American people...because their greed and obstruction will cost the lives and fortunes of tens of thousands of Americans who might have otherwise been cared for by a public option. Bastards!

Too bad for many of us but it's going to bite the insurance industry in the ass. It will take a long time also. However more American citizens are going belly up everyday. Sooner or later there will be trucks going around to pick up the dead because many of us will simply refuse to see doctors. We would rather die than run up bills.
I freely admit that I am almost devoid of "moral fiber" but even I know that this advertisement was done in bad taste.
