Israeli Strike Hits U.N. Complex in Gaza Strip

And so it goes:

As the Gaza death toll passed an estimated 1,000 people and concerns about the humanitarian situation inside Gaza grew, Egypt announced on Wednesday that it was making progress toward an interim cease-fire, with some officials predicting that one could be five to six days away. A senior Israeli defense official, Amos Gilad, arrived in Cairo on Thursday to continue the talks.

Also on Wednesday, nine Israeli human rights groups called for an investigation into whether Israeli officials had committed war crimes in Gaza. The groups say that tens of thousands of civilians in Gaza have nowhere to flee, the Gaza health system has collapsed, many people are without electricity and running water, and some are beyond the reach of rescue teams.

“This kind of fighting constitutes a blatant violation of the laws of warfare and raises the suspicion, which we ask be investigated, of the commission of war crimes,” the groups said in a news conference on the 19th day of the war.

The president of the International Committee of the Red Cross, Jakob Kellenberger, who spent Tuesday in Gaza City, agreed that the situation with civilians was dire but said that the principal hospital was making do with medical supplies, and that doctors, working around the clock, were mostly coping with the flow of the wounded.

“In general, they did not complain about the lack of equipment or material,” he said at a news conference in Jerusalem.

Us and jews perfect together.
War criminals totally.

The US has killed through war and command of the predatory capitalist model roughly 180 million per decade since 1945.

Do the math....

thats over

1 BILLION ... yes BILLION.... people.

it dwarfs the Nazi's, it makes the crimes of Stalin seem amateurish, it makes Pol Pot a third stringer, it makes Mao and the Cultural Revolution purge seem trite.

1 Billion is 1000 Million.

Isn't it great living in an Empire?

I've said it here many times. The US is the worlds worst terrorist nation. The USA the land of milk and honey, the one that everyone wants to move to, hasn't existed for many decades now.

It's truly amazing that you are absolutely without any empathy for the poor masses that your Israeli masters are massacring. Anything at all that Israel does is fair game in your books. You keep on going back to that red herring about some rockets that are fired at your precious Israel. Overgrown firecrackers that have killed probably less than 2 dozen Israelis over the years. Yet the massive overkills that Israel undertakes are merely "defensive". I think that you are a psychopath. Only a psychopath or a madman can be totally without empathy and continue to hope that more "enemies" are killed.

those so-called rockets wouldn't have much range if fired from city areas or from buildings.

They do what they always do, shake theirs fingers and go "tut tut, naughty, mustn't do". The UN is totally useless.

Israel is its own worst enemy. All they are doing is making more Hamas militants with each civilian they kill and each building or neighborhood they destroy. This will have the same result that the occupation of Iraq has had for the U.S.

creating more Islamic terrorist militants serves Israel's long term strategic interests.

Why has Obama not condemned these atrocities that are occurring in Gaza? Is he waiting for permission from AIPAC before he opens his mouth? The more he is reticent, the more it becomes clear to the Palestinians that the [alleged] agent of hope offers no hope at all for the Palestinians.

The hope is that on inauguration day, Obama will look out at the crowd and see a multitude of people wearing the button SAVE GAZA [mine will arrive in the mail next week].

Erroll's picture

Tubesox

You certainly are right. Obama would "truly see where these protestors' hearts are at..." and that would be, unlike Obama, with the over 1000 Palestinians who have been massacred by Israeli bombs which have been supplied by the United States.

tubesox's picture

that well over half of those who are dead are hamas...how is it a "massacre"?

unless you believe that killing armed combatants is a massacre

Erroll's picture

Why exactly are the Palestinians firing rockets? Could it possibly have anything to do with Israel breaking the truce last November and being surrounded by barbed wire and having their food and water and electricity and medications cut off and being bombarded with white phosphorous which we know [or at least we should know] burns away the flesh and sears the body from the inside out?

If Obama actually possessed the trait called integrity he would be condemning Israel for its actions and calling them by its right name, war crimes. But the [alleged] agent of change refuses to condemn Israel and must therefore be branded a coward for not speaking out against the heinous actions of Israel.

SAVE GAZA.

and after the withdrawal of israeli troops from gaza?

and yes, if you wish to see the left marginalized, please, keep attacking obama before he even takes office

{Deleted, Knock off the personal attacks. SiteMonitor}

How come you ask the same question over and over? I answered that same question more than four times now.

OK, pay attention now.

When Israel withdrew in 2005, it removed 8,000 settlers from Gaza. It then resettled 12,000 settlers in the West Bank (Source: Avi Shlaim, an Israeli scholar of International Relations teaching at Oxford).

Now, the so-called withdrawal, was anything but. The withdrawal was a redeployment of forces around Gaza. That includes the airspace, the sea and land.

So, the Palestinians could not go anywhere outside the Strip. They could not fish for food by boat, and they could not fly anywhere even though there's an airstrip south of Rafah.

After the 2006 elections in Gaza and the 2007 removal of Fatah from Gaza by force, Hamas was punished by Israel. Israel abducted parliament members and jailed them. Some, it even assasinated. So, Hamas fired rockets because Israel refused to recognize them as the elected body of the Palestinian people.

upchuck's picture

How dare you confuse tubesteak with facts.

He wants to hear none it; none of it I say.

Stop the information. It hurts tubesteaks ears.

Mussint listen to the bad man.

Israel good; Palestinians bad.

So the other couple of hundred who AREN'T Hamas are...what? Non-humans?

Compared to the small number of Israelis who are dead (and they are also to be mourned) it seems the real perpetrator of terrorism is the Israeli government.

The U.S. should cut off aid to Israel until they stop the massacre (yes, massacre.)

who benefits from the terrorism?

certainly not Hamas and its constituents.

hey.... Israel benefits. The US benefits (arms sales, creation of new boogey-men, distraction from Iraq/Afghanistan)

By "the US" I assume you mean the corporations and war profiteers. Average Americans don't benefit at all.

tubesox's picture

Can you explain the Gulf of Tonkin?

Maybe the USS Liberty?

Or how about Operation Himler?

Or how about the Anthrax attacks?

tubesox's picture

2 of these ops were false flag...tonkin and operation himmler

the lavon affair was a failed attempt by some in israeli intelligence to create a false flag op...lavon was forced to resign, and it messed up relations between israel the us and britain for awhile

king david was an operation by israelis against british forces

the uss liberty was an attack by israelis on a us ship...israel says it was not flying its flag, the us says it was

the anthrax attacks have still unknown sources

you forgot to add 9/11...cuz i know you want to

{ Deleted, petty. SiteMonitor}

tubesox's picture

is what happens in urban warfare

if one chooses to fire from an urban area, one also takes responsibilty for the enemy combatant for fire back, thereby placing civilians in jeopardy

hamas, on the other hand, fires not upon israeli troops, but directly into civilian areas...where no troops are stationed

and as there are hamas made vids showing the training of both boys under the age of 18 and of women, i still question how many of these civilians are truly non combatants

and please...dont call me a liar...hamas has posted these vids themeselves

"i still question how many of these civilians are truly non combatants"

Riiiiiiiigggghhhhtttt.......MOST of the Palestinians are terrorists. Nice.

By this thinking, I question how many of those Israeli "citizens" are not involved in the military. After all, don't ALL Israelis have to serve time in the armed forces?

tubesox's picture

then i will agree with you

they havent done that yet

I think people are just sick and tired of this whole thing.
Israel does have a reputation for (how shall I put this) responding with a magnified response. So to speak.
I used to be some what accepting of Israel.
I know what happened in the 30s-40's.
And have somewhat followed most of the actions that have taken place since then.
But, after Lebanon and now this, It appears to me that Israel have gone over the top with their response.
The only thing that can come from this , is more Palestinians resenting Israel.
They need to discuss a peaceful solution.
Innocent children are being killed.
There is no excuse for that.
Not to mention cutting off food and medical supplies.
Didn't Israel bomb a facility that had medical supplies and food?
Plus the Israelis dancing in New York definitely are Not helping matters. The world is getting tired of this. No offense, but you should get used to people diss'in Israel.
I admire you for being stalwart with your position.
I just disagree.
Israel is the big player here. They should rise above the indiscriminate killing. And set an example of how to achieve a peaceful lasting relationship with her neighbors.

It's because I DO read these posts, { Edited, offensive. SiteMonitor} that made me come to the conclusion that you are simply one more person with blinders on who thinks that Israel can do no wrong. Wake up!

Answer this, if you are so objective: name one time that Israel was in the wrong. They certainly are not perfect, just as no nation is perfect.

But if you can't point to ANYTHING Israel was wrong about, then you are what you seem to be: an Israel apologist.

BOTH sides are accountable for violence, but Israel consistently goes overboard. Get your head out of the sand!

Hey Site Monitor, I was merely quoting our President by using that euphemism. How could that be offensive? (I believe he used it in describing a NY Times reporter to Cheney.)

The tanks advanced under a barrage of artillery and mortar fire that struck the al Quds, al Fata and al Wafa hospitals.

There were unconfirmed reports that Shifa, Gaza City's biggest hospital, was on fire after being struck by Israeli shells.

There is a word for what Gaza is, and you should know it well. It's called a GHETTO.

If you look at the definition of a GHETTO and look at what Warsaw was and Gaza / Jenin / The West Bank are they are in fact the same. If you take 1.2 million people and lock them in the Gaza strip, deny food, water, commercial enterprise and medicine, don't you think they would retaliate? If Jordan, Syria and Egypt blockaded Israel you would be here with all your righteous indignation proclaiming that Israel has a right to defend itself.

The bottom line, in '67 General Dian had strict orders to bypass Gaza. But victory in the Sinai came so quick that he got cocky and took it anyway and it will lead to the ultimate destruction of Israel.

No country, not even the US has a God-Ordained right to exist. If Israel insists on acting like Nazis, then eventually the rest of the world is going to need to cut them off. Starting with us.

you are mocking reality and proving the point that when one uses the term zionist, he means jew

The Jews, Israelis, Zionists...whatever...have the right to slaughter indiscriminately because they believe that a deity promised them land in that region?
Yet one more reason I hate organized religion.

LOL

Me too!

people would be free to worship as they saw fit, but under NO circumstances would they be allowed to become so organized as to be powerful enough to influence government.
I'm just absolutely sick and fucking tired of religious extremists from the big 3 religions affecting my life.
I curse them all.

The Israeli Terrorist Force (ITF) has a long and sordid history of deliberately targeting UN and foreign people, vehicles and buildings. No one should be surprised that this happened.

The goal is and always has been the same: get rid of foreigners so the ethnic cleansing can go on unobserved. Why do you think Israel has banned foreign journalists from the Gaza Strip?

The ITF's war crime in the Rafah refugee camp, a deliberate missile fire on unarmed people, brought worldwide condemnation against Israel, but only because it was on video. The same atrocities go on daily but are ignored; it's only when incontravertible video evidence appears that the west is willing to criticize Israel.

More than food and medical supplies, Palestine needs a donation of video cameras to record the ITF's murderous acts. Recordings could be used to file charges against the Israeli government - the same charges people were convicted of and executed for at Nuremburg in 1945.

“In general, they did not complain about the lack of equipment or material,” he said at a news conference in Jerusalem.

"IN GENERAL" - oh U.N. protocolspeak....Seriously b.s. NO LACK OF EQUIPMENT OR MATERIAL!!?? Say what?! WHO in any war says that? WHO - in any country, during any attack, says "we're ok" at the hospital...- I would like to know how did this guy ASK THEM?? "Oh, look you are going to have to make do because no one can get anything TO YOU ANYWAY - so do you will manage right?"....

"Kucinich on the Destruction of the UN Headquarters in Gaza"

http://kucinich.house.gov/News/DocumentSingle...

Washington, Jan 15 -

Congressman Dennis Kucinich (D-OH) today made the following statement about the ongoing humanitarian crisis in Gaza on the House Floor:

“The attack on the United Nations headquarters in Gaza is further proof that a post-legal era in world affairs has taken shape; where law and moral principles are irrelevant, where might makes right, where retribution and vengeance, even against innocent children, fails to shake us from moral lethargy or political paralysis.

“Collective punishment, disproportionate use of force, using U.S. planes, helicopters and munitions to attack a wounded, starved and thirsty civilian population of mostly children trapped in a box called Gaza has become acceptable, perhaps because we have already accepted the deaths of over one million innocent civilians in Iraq in a war based on lies.

“There is a way out. We must ask those who were given our armaments for defense to stop the aggression, end the blockade, end the occupation, and reconnect with the high sentiments that rallied their own suffering, wounded people to nationhood generations ago. When we recognize the humanitarian disaster in Gaza, when we come to grips with the reality of suffering on both sides, we may yet find a way to save ourselves."

Were he President...the world would be better off...not that Obama's gonna suck...but Kucinich was my first choice.

Once again, Kucinich is showing why he is the most qualified person to be President.

BBC: "Israelis shot at fleeing Gazan civilians"

Claims have been received by the BBC and an Israeli human rights group that Israeli troops have fired on Gaza residents trying to escape the conflict area. Israel has strongly denied the allegations.
BBC: "Israelis shot at fleeing Gazan civilians"-- 01/14/2009

BBC journalists in Gaza and Israel have compiled detailed accounts of the claims.

Some Palestinian civilians in Gaza say Israeli forces shot at them as they tried to leave their homes - in some cases bearing white flags.

One testimony heard by the BBC and human rights group B'tselem describes Israeli forces shooting a woman in the head after she stepped out of her house carrying a piece of white cloth, in response to an Israeli loudhailer announcement.

The Israeli military has dismissed the report as "without foundation".

The BBC has spoken to members of another family who say they are trapped in their home by fighting and have been shot at when they tried to leave to replenish dwindling water and food supplies, even during the three-hour humanitarian lull.

Israel is denying access to Gaza for international journalists and human rights monitors, so it is not possible to verify the accounts.

B'tselem said it had been unable to corroborate the testimony it had received, but felt it should be made public. [much more at BBC]
