You know, I don't want to jump to conclusions here, because that would make me too much like Matt Drudge. But if the car bomber was indeed a white guy in his 40s who didn't know the difference between ammonium nitrate and plain old fertilizer, I'm thinking it's gotta be a Beck Patriot who was trying to water the tree of liberty with... the blood of random Times Square tourists.
I mean, it's just their kind of logic:

It's not that unusual for a car to be junked with the tags still on it. A couple of years ago my son-in-law was in a bad accident far from home. He was taken to the hospital and the car was hauled off by a city wrecking crew (Chicago). It took a couple of days to sort out where the car had gone and when we located it the tags were gone along with all the CDs and loose change from the car.

Times are tough. Ferrous metals scrap going for around 50 cents/pound. Recycle old plates for a few pennies. It's times like these that I find people combing my alley with specially equipped bikes with a basket and a grabber pole looking for 5 cent deposit bottles left out for collection. The major difference this time was a "bomb" without the "suicide bomber". And this time it's on the ground in NYC, instead of in the air in a commercial aircraft. Also, this incident is just before a visit by the President of Iran to the UN on Monday. The vehicle was located about 6 blocks from the UN, but only a block or so away from Viacom -- so it looks like we have a conflicted bomber without firm (suicidal) resolve.
Ergo, we have yet another black-ops false flag operation by rouge elements of our intelligence apparatus (perhaps Blackwater/Xe or Mossad?) who is trying to generate actionable justification for a new military adventure, now in Iran. This, as opposed to actionable justification against Iraq/Afghanistan (shoe-bomber), or actionable justification against Yemen (underwear-bomber). But the underlying theme remains the same -- an unsuccessful bombing attempt that is designed to reinforce the fear-factor among the general population (and reverberated in the echo-chamber MSM) for new military adventures. The MICC beast has a voracious appetite, and demands to be fed anew, and with the US military coming to the aid of poor defenseless Israel.

Real terrorists, whether domestic or foreign, don't seem to have any particular problem building bombs that actually work. The knowledge-base is readily available, whether it's from the internet, military training manuals, some organic chemistry textbook, or anarchist cookbook. Truthfully, one doesn't need to be particularly bright to build a working bomb, only ambitious.
But if the perpetrators are more interested in generating fear and panic, to be utilized for some other arcane purpose (political theatre), an actual working bomb is unnecessary perhaps even undesirable. Especially if the desired result, like new military actions or even justification for an organization's continued existence, increased funding, or more egregious suppression of basic human rights were the real objective.
It seems that every government, especially democracies, feel perfectly justified in mounting covert false flag operations in order to bend the will of their people to a particular endeavor, no matter how otherwise unpopular or irrational.
