SEOUL, South Korea — North Korea responded to new United Nations sanctions on Saturday by defiantly vowing to press forward with production of nuclear weapons and take “resolute military actions” against efforts to isolate it.
In a statement on the North’s official Korean Central News Agency, an unnamed spokesman for the North Korean Foreign Ministry was quoted as saying that his nation will continue its nuclear program to defend itself against what he called a hostile United States policy. He was quoted as saying his nation will “weaponize” its existing plutonium stockpiles and begin a new program to enrich uranium, another material that can be used to make atomic warheads.
The statement was released hours after the Security Council voted to punish the North for its May 25 nuclear test and ballistic missile tests with tough sanctions including an arms embargo and high-seas searches of North Korean vessels.
“We’ll take firm military action if the United States and its allies try to isolate us,” the spokesman said, according to KCNA.

The last thing the Chinese want is conflict of any kind. The status quo works just fine for them for now and they don't want anything, especially dumbass NK, to screw it up.

NK will get more sanctions. More people will starve to death.
And those 2 women,(shaking my head) are lost. In prison in NK doing hard labor. I have my doubts that the NK gov will let them suffer the brunt of this situation. But, if the sanctions are enforced, those two will suffer. They'll just fatten them up before they're repatriated.

How about just bombing their nuclear facilities using the stealth bombers (very long range, around 11000km afaik). Who would they retaliate against? Would they declare war on South Korea for being an American ally, even if there wasn't any S Korean involvement?
Apologies if I sound very stupid but I'm very new to politics and world affairs. Just getting to learn a lot from this site & the discussions that take place here.
N. Korea has enough long-range artillery trained on Seoul to reduce it to rubble in a matter of minutes and would do so in retaliation for an American attack. Toyko would probably come under attack too.
And what really worries everyone is that Kim Jong-il is crazy enough to use his nukes and can hit most of our allies' (in the region) major cities with his missles. Supposedly, they have a missile that can carry a nuke to at least Hawaii and maybe even the West Coast. But there's a lot of doubt about whether the missle can actually make it that far carrying payload.
But they can do a lot of damage not only to the 28,000 Americans stationed int S. Korea but also to our fleet in the region and or allies. This would be a very bloody conflict if it ever happened.
Are you suggesting that if the US attacks NK, it will have a hard time choosing targets in reprisal? There are plenty of US assets around to retaliate against.
I think Iran should also have a nuclear trump card with the US terrorizing and destroying everything in its path, although they don't seem to be taking that approach.

in my post did you read that NK would have problems hitting US targets? Besides, the question was, would NK attack SK if the US attacked. The answer is a resounding yes.

Ya know, I really feel sorry for those North Koreans. I mean, they are spending so much time and effort and expense trying to produce a nuclear weapon, instead of feeding their own people and making an effort to live peacefully with the rest of the world. Now, the US on the other hand has LOTS of nuclear weapons, not to mention long-range missiles. Why don't we save the poor North Koreans all that time and effort and money and send them a couple. Airmail. That will not only shut them up, it'll give them an opportunity to see what they are trying to create firsthand.
....much of the world is feeding the people of the DPKR. Of course, much of the food is diverted to feed the army.
