President Promises 600K New Jobs This Summer

Anything that produces more jobs is good news, but it's a drop in the bucket when we're losing an average of a half-million jobs per month:
WASHINGTON – President Barack Obama promised Monday to deliver more than 600,000 jobs through his $787 billion stimulus plan this summer, with federal agencies pumping billions into public works projects, schools and summer youth programs.
Obama is ramping up his stimulus program this week even as his advisers are ramping down expectations about when the spending plan will effect a continuing rise in the nation's unemployment.
Many of the stimulus plans that Obama announced Monday already were in the works, including hundreds of maintenance projects at military bases, about 1,600 state road and airport improvements, and federal money states budgeted for 135,000 teachers, principals and school support staff.
The administration had always viewed the summer as a peak for stimulus spending, as better weather permitted more public works construction and federal agencies had processed requests from states and others.
But Obama now promises an accelerated pace of federal spending over the next few months to boost the economy and produce jobs.

I find this interesting because if the govt could create new jobs out of thin air, why do we have ANY unemployment?
Anyone?
libertarians keep their magic free market invisible hand?
Ones that help us produce exportable goods that can narrow the trade deficit? No of course not. Excessive government work quickly can become a snake that eats itself, at the end of the day it's yet another burden to the tax payer as always. The money did not come international trade or business, it came from a credit card that is way beyond its maximum limit and we are barely making the minimum payments.
We are not going to make this downturn painless no matter what we do. But spending borrowed money will lead us back to another crash and worse next time. We need to reduce the size of government massively now and tighten the belt. It's so simple, we are going to take our medicine whether we like it or not. Fighting it will only make it worse. But I've said all this here before...
In times like these the government is the only one hiring.
There is a census being done next year. they have already startef the process.
That is just one area where jobs will be created.
Get your head out of your ass and think.
Should services or products be provided at the barrel of a gun?

I find it interesting you mention the census....
"I ask myself exactly why would a civilian census department, originally intended merely to count the numbers of people in the country has done this. Exactly why does the Census Department need to know the precise GPS location of every household in the USA? Of course, the answer is they don’t. The next question is who does and why do they need that GPS locator?"

Stay in your nice warm fuzzy bubble it's comfortable and "secure"....
I don't know if I feel safe either.
The Japanese
I have worked on the last 3 Census' and many other Dept. of Commerce Surveys.
Information is golden. Many of us need actual facts and figures when we do our work.
That site is BS. A sham and misleading.
Bubble? You are the one in a bubble. If someone WANTS you, your ass is grass. and it didn't just get that way. It's been that way since the 70's so you wake up. Quit living in fear.
... why would some people let things like facts and real data get in the way of a perfectly good bitchfest?
the gov need to know how many toilets I have in my household? Or most of the other questions that are one the census? I'm planning on answering what I am constitutionally obligated to, which is how many people live in my house. I'll take the $100 fine.
of (knowingly false) "good" news to avert panic.
It was a culture of overconsumption that created this quagmire, and a culture of overconsumption is what's keeping our rebirth as a respectable species on this planet at bay.
Twittering and Tweeting out there, there are two willing to take this kind of work. That's the positive of it. Or they may just be nostalgic for the historical reality of 14-hour-days of labor in hundred-degree heat.
He said "created or saved".
Pay attention.
"everyone who already does this stuff will still have a (temporary) job this summer."
... however, it seems that for some of the posters in this site... there is nothing more terrifying that the prospect of Obama's policies starting to work. What would some of the professional complainers do then, right? ;-)
Ah yes, six hundred thousand jobs.
That should make up for ONE month of losses.
Good work, Mister President.
KInda makes me feel better about the staying in Iraq, escalation in Afghanistan, indefinite detentions, continuing the Wall Street bailouts without accountability, etc, etc., part of this "change".
under a new moniker?
No. Who?
600,000 new jobs over the summer ... Gee that's great . Lets see , that will cover one months worth of lay offs , the millions like myself that have been laid off and their families are truly relieved at this news . Wall street , the banks , financial institutions and all of the big money boys are making money again and have been rewarded for their corruption , greed and unethical behavior that did all the rest of us in so the crisis is over ! Hallelujah !
Aight, I'm iN. Hook me up. 20 an hour.
With the private sector shedding 2,000,000 jobs over the same time period, we are still in a world of shit.
What we need to do, is cut taxes on the rich, so that they can spend more and it will trickle down upon us....., and make everything like totally awesome.
create a new wpa now
every able man, woman and child should be given something to do if they dont have anything
Hell yes, I'll dig ditches. Where's a shovel?
I hike a lot. Many of those trails were created during the Depression by the WPA and CCC. We had what we called "the CCC pond" in the town I grew up in.
Give us work, and we'll create projects that people will enjoy for years to come.
Yes we can create six million jobs out of thin air.....Hell the FED prints money out of thin air all the time, just one more extension of the government do making something out of nothing. We ask our past leaders if we should make it a global ditch digging work situation since they are always quick to send jobs else where's. But keep hope alive tomorrow they shy will be full of rainbows and gumdrops!!!
