It's about time that someone fought back against the fabricated political scandals that are so often aimed at liberal Democrats, and the right-wing sites like Big Hollywood that so eagerly report them. Good for Rep. Weiner! I hope his attorneys find grounds to sue. Via Raw Story:

Democratic Rep. Anthony Weiner is consulting with his lawyers after it was reported that the New York congressman sent a racy photo to a female college student from Seattle via Twitter.

"We’ve retained counsel to explore the proper next steps and to advise us on what civil or criminal actions should be taken," Weiner spokesman Dave Arnold told The Daily Caller in an email. "This was a prank. We are loath to treat it as more, but we are relying on professional advice."

Weiner has claimed that his Facebook account was hacked and that, while the photo did appear on his Twitter feed, he did not send it. The photo shows a man's erect penis outlined in a pair of tight boxer briefs. The photo was first published by Andrew Breitbart'sBigGovernment. The photo was quickly deleted along with all the other photos on the congressman's yFrog account.

[...] An analysis of a screenshot of the congressman's yFrog account, which was published by BigGovernment, shows the image was manipulated, according to the progressive blog DailyKos. The screenshot was allegedly altered to make it appear that the racy photo was associated with Rep. Weiner's account.

so ridiculous i'm lost for words. but i can say this, breitbart is a worthless idiot.

While I'm sure Weiner himself wasn't going around posting pictures of awkward boners, this story does not seem to be clear about whether or not something was actually posted from his account and which service it was posted from. The way it reads, his Facebook account was hacked leading to the photo being posted on his Twitter feed and then was deleted from his yFrog account, except it was never in the yFrog account because a screenshot was altered to make it look like it was associated with that account when it was not. What?

Thank you for that comment. I could not for the life of me follow what had happened. I was afraid my brain had fallen out somewhere along the way today.

Say what you mean. Mean what you say. But don't say it mean.

what the hell is a yFrog account? (I'm computer savvy, but not a nerd).

It's an image and video hosting service. Basically it is somewhere that is linked in with the various social sites that allows you to easily upload to yFrog and share an image via Twitter, Facebook, et al.

luddite in some respects. I don't have a fancy cell phone--just one of those clunky ones you add money to every 90 days or so--so I'm not in the Twitter, yFrog, Skype, texting crowd. But I do have a Facebook account!

Yup

He'll probably get more than enough donations to his legal defense to make it a profitable gamble and the publicity is priceless.

Lower the retirement age.

James O'Keefe and his hooker helper lost the first round because a judge wouldn't accept their First Amendment defense. They promised a guy they were interviewing it would be confidential and then they took and published video. The gentleman they interviewed brought the case. Will this implicate Breitbart? Don't know, but it's about time.

These guys have NEVER grown up. They have a juvenile sense of humour, one that even kids find disgusting. Time to put a real hurtin' on them...right in the pocketbook. I want to see Breity and O'Keep-it-in-mah-pants broken financially; take all their money, now and in perpetuity. make them give every red cent they EVER receive to charities doing progressive works. Force them to live on the charity of others until the day the give up their mortal coils.

Good old fashioned internet detective work. I bet you it was Breitbart or one of his minions.

NOBODY 2012

...as well as why it's important to have good security on your computer, especially when you're a public figure (and even more so when you're a Congressman). If Weiner was foolish enough to use a password for his Facebook and/or Twitter account which could potentially be guessed by a clever person -- and especially if he compounded that foolishness by using the same password for multiple accounts -- it would potentially not be all that difficult for someone to hack into his account, especially someone like Breitbart who has an axe to grind. Also, there's always the possibility that Weiner's computer became infected with a virus of some sort which is specifically designed to steal passwords. What I want to know is why nobody seems to be making an effort yet to question or look into the IP address where this message originated, and where Weiner was at the time. If the message originated from an IP address that does not match Weiner's movements, then it's fairly clear that he didn't send it.

Never trust anyone who insists that patriotism requires you to blindfold yourself with the flag.

Taarak's picture

Good advice.

Most good sites now require a password strength of at least 3 or more (on a scale from 0-5).

The most used password in the world is "12345".

JohnMWhite's picture

12345? That's the combination on my luggage!

Taarak's picture

Yes, I know. BTW - you're almost out of toothpaste.

The operative word being "seems". If they really are exploring civil litigation or a criminal investigation, wouldn't they be prudent to keep their cards close to their chest at this juncture?

FreeSpeechZone

password you have these days.....there will always be someone who can hack in to your account. I subscribe to a computer service called NerdsOnCall and the tech said there's virtually no account hackers cannot get in to if they put their mind to it. Now Rep. Weiner has to follow through and sue that bastard Breitbart to show him he can't ALWAYS get away with this sh*t. And if there was ever someone to put Breitbart in his smarmy place, it would be Anthony Weiner.

I don't think this is it.

But he better pursue these bastards or this type of crap WILL NEVER STOP!

Failin' Palin's hacker got federal convictions. There better be at least something equivalent for Weiner's hacker/s... and that's not any FALSE equivalence!

Does Breitfart have any credibility? At all? Some day this guy will get his just rewards. He will end up in a gutter drooling all over himself, as a has been that he already is.

MountainMan23's picture

The only thing new about these Breitbart incidents is that they involve the internet.

Setups, hits & frames have been the stock and trade of American fascists for as long as I can remember.

Nixon forged the documents that got the Rosenbergs executed.

Joe McCarthy made his reputation fabricating malicious lies.

The FBI and their hench-persons went after MLK.

Ultimately the attacks on the persona become attacks on the person - MLK, Bobby Kennedy, etc.

I could write a book (and have seriously considered doing so) about how they came after me, and all my poitical activites have been decidedly local. Unless you lived in the same city you never heard of me.

As one of my friends said to me, you must fight back but in so doing the best you can hope for is to "come back up to zero". You finally clear your name, at least in some peoples' minds, but you've exhausted valuable time and energy in the process.

So it has been an hour and twenty minutes since this article was posted and no one seems to want to explain what actually happened, given the confused and convoluted circumstances quoted. Is anyone the wiser about this or are we all just going to continue complaining about Breitbart because whatever happened, we know it was his fault?

JohnMWhite's picture

A much more clear breakdown there. No wonder the truncated version is so confusing though - what a mess. I do like the conservative narrative though, which seems to be that Weiner anticipated his own stupidity by setting the stage with a tweet about his hacked Facebook account before bizarrely posting a public link to a picture of his weiner in a tweet to a high school girl. Yeah, I'm sure his plan was to do something stupid and get caught, then rely on earlier references to a hacked account to get out of it, rather than just not doing something stupid...

JohnMWhite's picture

My mistake.

MountainMan23's picture

What would happen if Breitbart actually came up with a real scandal?

Would anyone believe it?

Can you say "shot himself in the foot"?

while i appreciate the congressman's careful handling of the issue, and his spokeperson's effort to downplay the incident, in the age of the [alleged] DSK rape (not to mention the c-street adulterers), this type of sabotage is more than a prank. whoever was involved in this attempted to bring down a congressman is using what has sadly become the most damaging charge one can level against a politician--infidelity.

GSL's picture

I wholeheartedly agree. "A prank?" Seriously? No, this is libel, pure and simple. This is a published falsehood, and the fact that he was hacked proves intent to harm (which, I hear, is the hardest part about prosecuting libel cases).

"UNION THUGGERY" would have been all over the Corporate Media the same day. Whereas, if you were a Rethug and Breitbart a Dem, you could have shot him in the head and become just another 'isolated incident.'

Auximinus's picture

I hope Weiner nails his ass to the wall. It's about time someone stood up to this piece of slime. He needs to be in a prison cell for the countless lives he has damaged with his bullshit. His protege James O'Keefe should join him. They could be cell mates. Maybe teach each other how to love again (ewwww). The man (term used as loosely as possible, of course) is a criminal, and it's about time he started getting treated like one.

Kreskin's picture

CNN just had Breitbart on and let him lie and go on and on and on , the host threw a couple marshmallows at him trying to look like she was being objective . My television isn't going to with stand much more of this .

Insanity , it is what it is , there is no understanding it .

He's claiming that the fact that Weiner is "lawyering up" is evidence that he is guilty of the obviously fake smear attack. He's got to sue Breitbart directly for libel. This is clearly intent to damage Weiner's reputation with false evidence. It will easily get past the higher bar public figures have for libel and slander, IMO (I'm not a lawyer).

ikalbertus's picture

this morning. The newswoman asks at the end "why was Weiner following this girl on his Twitter (or Facebook) account?" making it sound like he was stalking here. I believe I read that Weiner follows about 200 people. Not that they would bring such things up in their little news bites. Gotta create confusion, milk the story for all it's worth on a 24 hour news cycle.

innocent bystander's picture

he has only chosen to follow 198 ... less than one half of a percent

this makes sense ... people usually follow friends, family, associates, or celebs, because they are the people whose tweets show up on your home page ... one wouldn't follow some random person, because their tweets would distract from the information that one really wants to know

again, out of more than 50,500 people, weiner is following less than 200 ... and it is unlikely that he chose those select few using "eeny meeny miney moe"

i am a whole-hearted admirer of rep weiner, but this aspect of the story has given me serious doubts about his veracity

This is all they have , lies , more lies and smear campaigns against people like Pelosi and Weiner , the ones who give them the most trouble . If you're a pushover ( wimp ) like Reid they don't bother ., They have to lie and stir up shit , if the scum were truthful and factual they'd be done for , they'd be finsished .

Although I disagree with a lot of Anthony Weiner's politics, my initial reaction was to believe his claim that the twitter account was hacked - and I said as much in my own blog.

But now that days are going by and, instead of demanding an FBI investigation (which would probably determine who, if anyone, hacked his account) Weiner is lawyering up, my initial benefit of the doubt in favor of Weiner no longer exists.

The bottom line is that no one knows for sure what the truth is - not yet, and maybe never. But, so far at least, Weiner is doing what I would expect of a guilty party. And that causes me to conclude - until shown otherwise - the greatest likelihood is that there was no hacker, it was him.

People who assume that because Weiner shares their political views he must be innocent, are tailor-made suckers, ripe for the taking.
