Two More Swine Flu Casualties in New York

No, it didn't go away. In fact, the daughter of one of my best friends was just diagnosed:

Two more New Yorkers have died with confirmed cases of swine flu, the city’s health commissioner said on Tuesday, bringing the city’s total number of deaths related to the virus to four. Emergency room visits and hospitalizations also continued to rise.

The commissioner, Dr. Thomas R. Frieden, said the two latest casualties, a 41-year-old woman in Queens and a 34-year-old man in Brooklyn, were linked to the H1N1 virus by lab tests completed on Monday and Tuesday. Both patients had underlying health conditions that put them more at risk, he said. He added that he could not say officially whether the flu had caused their deaths until autopsies were finished. Both died on Friday.

Officials have cited underlying conditions as a factor in all four deaths in the city, but they have not revealed those conditions, citing medical confidentiality.

[...] Dr. Frieden, speaking at a news conference at the health department, noted that both patients who died were relatively young. Health officials have said that there is some evidence that people born before 1957 may have been exposed to a similar virus and may have some immunity to the novel strain of flu that is circulating.

Hospitals that normally get about 200 visits to the emergency room each day are getting 2,000 per day, he said, and more than 25,000 people have gone to emergency rooms over the past month. The numbers are highest in Queens, but are increasing in Brooklyn and, to a lesser extent, in the Bronx and Manhattan.

Over the last five days, he said, 20 to 25 people a day have been hospitalized with the flu. Before the weekend, the city had recorded only 57 hospitalizations for flu during the entire preceding 30 days.

10 - 20,000 people die from the regular flu each year. Until we see those kind of numbers what the fuck is everyone so worried about?

Just because it has a new name doesn't make it a bigger killer. If it was of pandemic strain everyone would have it by now.

Enough with FEAR.

in Ontario the last few months has reached epidemic proportions but not a word about it in the media. Almost everyone I know has had it, or has it, and I can't recall the last time the numbers have been this large. Now if you are old, or feeble, yes a cold can kill you. Just as a flu virus can. I agree with you completely. This is not an epidemic. Just a normal flu virus floating around under a new name.

Sarcasm right?

It was bird flu last year, swine flu this year...next year its gonna be kangaroo flu!

its all a money making (for big Pharma with vaccines) distraction to take your mind of the shit that is far more likely to affect your lives like political and corporate corruption, and endless expensive wars at tax payer expense for the oil companies and for the Halliburtons of the world.

So everyone keep getting those vaccines and wetting your beds and above all else, pay no attention to the men behind the curtain!

Swine flu is a joke. The regular flu kills many more each year - tens of thousands just as puunjab said.

10 - 20,000 people die from the regular flu each year.

and these numbers are inflated because many die with the flu rather than dieing from it. Those cases are counted as flu deaths.

Could we please quit referring to "regular flu"? There's no such thing, at least, not in the context people insist on using.

Influenza is influenza is influenza. Some strains spread more easily, some strains make you sicker, some make you less sick but stay sick longer. But they're ALL "regular flu."

Swine flu is just another H1N1 variant.

puunjab, that's 36,000 a year in the US. Over a quarter million every year. Just another government scare tactic to keep Texas from walking out.

My wife is an ER nurse in the Metro NY area. Yes, it's true that ER visits for flu 'symptoms' have gone through the roof, HOWEVER, she has not seen a single real case of H1N1 flu. One patient was worried because he had eaten pork lo mein the day before & now he had a headache. Almost evry person showing up is responding to something they saw on TV or read in a newspaper. NYC has about 375 flu-related deaths each year. Actual number of H1N1 deaths this year - 4.

sick people than I saw in any single week over the winter, when there was a really nasty bug going around. Even the allergies are mild this year.
In other news, country still run by corporations, torturers and murderers still honored in media and politics.

is a nursing shift supervisor at our local hospital, and I asked her about how bad they were getting hit, she just shook her head. I was talking to another of the nurses there and she told me with all the calls they are getting about it, they are having a hard time doing their jobs.

I wonder how much both Al Gore and Rumsfeld are going to make in selling us Tamiflu vaccinations. It's all about money at the end of the day no matter how many have to die!!

Don't call it a comeback!

Anybody know?

they can't release it due to confidentiality laws, its all going to be guesses and opinions. But my guess would be either previous lung conditions, or immune system problems ie AIDS, some cancer treatments, some cancers etc.

All of those are conditions that would increase susceptibility and decrease immune response.

And, FWIW for the more paranoid among us, they're the same conditions that would also lead to increased mortality if the patient got pneumonia, or any other strain of flu.

If you are not sick, stay away from the hospital. That's where sick people go. Don't go hang out with them. Nothing good comes of it.

Both patients had underlying health conditions that put them more at risk,

as with many others already reported: these people died with swine flu rather than from swine flu

IT IS SMITHFIELD FLU...

It started on one of their Animal "Auschwitz" Factory "farms"

H1N1 and variants of the virus have been around for hundreds of years.

Could C&R _please_ be a "flu-free zone"? Enough with this stupidity. ENOUGH!!

When we have a flu that causes a cytokine storm (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cytokine_storm), THEN young, healthy people can start worrying. Until then just look yourself in the mirror, give yourself a couple swift slaps across the face and maybe it will snap you out of your hysteria.
