Vermont Overrides Veto, Makes Gay Marriage Legal
By Susie Madrak Wednesday Apr 08, 2009 12:45pmApparently gay people are now considered full-fledged human beings in certain select states!
MONTPELIER, Vt. (AP) — Vermont has become the fourth state to legalize gay marriage — and the first to do so with a legislature's vote.
The Legislature voted Tuesday to override Gov. Jim Douglas' veto of a bill allowing gays and lesbians to marry. The vote was 23-5 to override in the state Senate and 100-49 to override in the House. Under Vermont law, two-thirds of each chamber had to vote for override.
The vote came nine years after Vermont adopted its first-in-the-nation civil unions law.
It's now the fourth state to permit same-sex marriage. Massachusetts, Connecticut and Iowa are the others. Their approval of gay marriage came from the courts.

Well, when they announced the end of marijuana raids in california, I smoked a joint.
What should I do to celebrate this? Hmmm....
Ohhh...I gotta leave work. The world might come to an end, and I don't want to miss it!!
Yeeeehaaaa! This is the sign of Argmaggedon, Jesus is coming back!
Better get all my conmemorative spoons and dinner plates out for the welcoming gala at the trailer park!
Better open up a Chia Pet foster home!
to heaven, and I can finally open up that used car lot I've dreamed of?
with all the clothes on the sidewalks. You'll make a fortune!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LACyLTsH4ac Forget the stairway to heaven. She ain't doing no stairs. Jesus better have a freight elevator for this heffa.
Well if your not gay, how about smoke another joint.
go out rent a copy of Brokeback Mountain and cuddle tonight with a buddy. If you promise never to talk about the experience afterwads, it will all be alright.
That is only if you want to keep true to your MO of celebration...
If I were a conservative, it would be Bareback Mountain, since they do not believe in condoms.
With syrup on it?
I guess my heterosexual marriage is threatened by this. I don't understand how exactly that works but I'm told it does. I guess either my husband or I will opt to divorce and marry someone of our own sex. Funny, neither of us have ever had that inclination for the past almost 23 years of marriage.
Good for each and every state that has the intelligence to do this. Sadly, I don't see it ever happening in Florida, at least not in my lifetime.
Party Boss Rush Limpbaugh has been divorced 3 times and I would wager not one of his divorces had anything to with 2 gays getting married in Massachusetts. Likewise for Newt Gingrich.
when there are gays marrying three thousand miles away?
You're marriage is pretty much screwed now...
Teh gay's are coming for your haaaaappineeeeess!
Oh noes!
Jeez, and my marriage was going so well for so long. I don't think either one of us even know anyone in Vermont.
Sadly, California seems to be dragging its heels. No matter what the State Supreme Court rules on Proposition 8 - that it's an amendment or a revision, we're going to play the whole disgusting drama again at the ballot box.
My wife won't be pleased now that we have to separate due to them damn gays gettin' hitched. Hey, patricia, maybe we should do a spouse-swap: my wife for your husband. Then we could have affairs with our former spouses........as long as them gay-lovin' libruls don't find out and throw us in jail or a re-education camp.
And here I thought Republican economies, Republican governance, Republican incompetence, Republican wars and Republican debt were going to destroy America.
There's no hope for us now!
Didn't we have enough to worry about with bugs in the electrical system?
I would be elated if my brother in law and his companion could marry. They have been together for a very long time and it would be so nice to see them recognized while they are still young enough to really really celebrate. But as I said before, I can't see this happening in Florida...unless of course we can somehow cut off north Florida and the panhandle. I'd be willing to give it to Alabama or Georgia for no cost.
I can't believe earth is still rotating after this!
to Vermont
thanks for being rational!
Who would have though Vermonters would have been pro-All Americans?
Doesn't get any more all-American than that!
Even their hippies seem more reasonable than the ones we got stuck with in Cali. Maybe the cold weather does wonder to wake them neurons and common sense?
That the Glenn Beck troll from the Barney Frank thread makes it over here.
I really do.
It's "Barney Fag". According to ever classy bigoted homophobe Dick Armey.
all the fun stuff happens when I gotta leave!
For giving strokes and heart attacks to the same bigots who tried to deny my forebearers basic human rights.
Stock up on canned foods barricade your house. Your all going to get teh gay now. Your sons, daughters and neighbors are all going to marry the same sex. That gay virus is a catchy one. Evil liberals.
Just another reason to be FROM Vermont
All they gotta do is look at you funny, and POOOF! You got teh gay...
It's just awful!
I might be immune because I have had so many gay friends. Seems if I were going to catch it, I would already have it.
Ya think we'll need plastic sheeting and duct tape for this?
because it is the right thing to do. Like letting women vote and eliminating the death penalty.
There will always be opposition, but these things will come to pass.
That is why the opposition is so pointless ... it is just delaying the inevitable in the interests of not doing the right thing.
I have always wondered about those people who opposed simple dignities for other humans. As an example, I wondered how stupid do you have to be not to give the right to vote to a woman? How stupid do you have to be to not understand that people of color should have the same rights as everyone else? I swore as a child that I would never EVER be one of these stupid fools.
Gay Rights - Because it is the right thing to do.
Peace.

By this time next week it will be revealed to us that gay marriage has led to the collapse of America's financial system.
No, it's all Clinton's fault. Didn't you get the memo?
this will expand to all fifty states so we don't have to be constantly bombarded by the media with constant references to peoples sexual preferences and activities.
It's a grand day in the state of Vermont: a civilized beacon in what was once a great country.
maybe if we start thinking we are a great country we might at least have reason to make it so instead of accepting our demise.
I'm not gay, but I'm thinking of moving to VT.
Seems like the sanest, kindest state in the Union.
Could it be that the US is actually growing nearer to joining the rest of the civilized world in expanding equal human rights to all its citizens, regardless of their born trait in respect to sexual preference? Perhaps?!
After 8 nightmarish years under Bush and his hateful religious crusaders, whoddathunkit possible?
I do want to remark on the irony of Vermont passing this, but California can not seem to shake off the thugs from the Christian Right.
