Cluster Bomb Votes and the Price of Horseraces...

horserace Media Bloodhound:

The media may have treated Hilary Clinton unfairly at times over the course of this campaign (though nothing came close to the silent treatment it afforded John Edwards). But aside from her Iraq War vote (and even that's almost never discussed with the complexity and precision it demands), the biggest flaw in her press coverage has been the media's failure to effectively explore the kind of president she might be based upon her record, which includes her vote against banning cluster bombs in civilian areas. Knowledge of that vote, as well as other relevant actions in the Senate, both positive and negative, would give the American people a more solid foundation on which to cast their vote.

But these things get lost in a horse race.

[..]Thompson, who will turn 65 on Sunday, spent nearly four decades in politics and government, including 14 years as governor. He resigned as HHS secretary in December 2004 shortly after Bush won a second term. His tenure at HHS was marked by anthrax attacks, a flu vaccine shortage and passage of the Medicare prescription law. Read on...

Holding America to Her Principles

As we continue to explore the basis underlying our original essay, 'Ten Characteristics of A True US Patriot', it is imperative that we understand not only the principles supporting each individual Characteristic, but also how the Characteristics relate to each other. The first Characteristic touches
upon the nature of rights and freedoms, while the second delves into the equality of all. The third Characteristic explores the structure and reasoning behind the representative form of government and the importance of checks and balances to prevent the abuse of power. All of these lead up to the formation of the fourth Characteristic, which focuses on accountability. Specifically, it reads:

A True US Patriot exercises the right to openly challenge and hold accountable at all times, even and most particularly in times of war, those who do not honor their oaths of office, who purposely mislead the nation, who abdicate responsibility when those in their employ are caught engaging in criminal and unethical activities, and who fail to serve the nation with integrity.

Although not directly stated, this Characteristic strongly implies a key responsibility of A True US Patriot: participation. Without the participation and vigilance of the citizenry, liberty cannot long survive. It is the nature of liberty and freedom to require the constant attention of those who claim to partake of them, or they can slip away under the gradual erosion of rights and imposition of unsound laws.  US Patriots United

Bunny Greenhouse     San Francisco Knitter

FINALLY!
A brave woman is blowing the whistle on Halliburton
.

Bunnatine “Bunny” Greenhouse is the Principal Assistant Responsible for Contracting (”PARC” in the alphabet soup of military acronyms) in the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. Lest the title fool, she is responsible for awarding billions upon billions in taxpayers’ money to private companies hired to resurrect war-torn Iraq and to feed, clothe, shelter and do the laundry of American troops stationed there.

She has rained a mighty storm upon herself for standing up, before members of Congress and live on C-SPAN to proclaim things are just not right in this staggeringly profitable business.
She has asked many questions: Why is Halliburton - a giant Texas firm that holds more than 50 percent of all rebuilding efforts in Iraq - getting billions in contracts without competitive bidding? Do the durations of those contracts make sense? Have there been violations of federal laws regulating how the government can spend its money Read on...

Randall Terry letter

Randall Terry
Founder of Operation Rescue

Dear Mr.Terry,

I'm so delighted about your new endeavor on the ever-popular Salem Radio Network.
They haven't put your picture up or made an announcement on the website yet, but it still must be exciting going on the air with other great conservative thinkers like Bill Bennett, Michael Medved and Hugh Hewitt. Its probably just a minor glitch, I mean Saint Augustine, Florida is a huge market.

I implore you wholeheartedly to run against that good for nothing Jim King in Florida. When you articulated quite profoundly that Jim King has consistently betrayed the core values of the Republican Party," I knew what you meant. The dude hasn't even been arrested once, while you on the other hand have piled up over forty trips to the pokey. Now that takes courage. That takes determination. That's the type of Republican values I'm talking about. You are a man of true conviction. (No pun intended).

By the way, I'm still upset over the fact that you lost all your worldly possessions while being sued by those crazy, idolatrous witches of NOW. They assuredly caused the pressure on your most sacred soul that forced you to dump your wife of 17 years and hook up with a newer, younger concubine.

That said, since you have sacrificed so much to our cause, I'm going to make a pledge to you. I declare it my solemnly duty to help get as many Republican candidates as I possibly can a nice extended trip to the hoosegaw. I think they all need to be shackled up for a few days in a holding cell to honestly understand what it means to be a real Republican. That builds character. That builds backbone. That builds the "Randall Terry" type of man we need in the Party.

Metrosexually Yours,

Crooks and Liars

Runaway "Bullshit"

The degradation of our public discourse continues as the national 'press corpse' struggles to elevate the absurdly trivial to a matter of national import...

Of course, in spending hours of air time speculating about Runaway Brides and other asinine minutia, they're not talking about anything that actually matters. Like Bush's Mission Accomplished.

Bring ‘em on: Seven Iraqi policemen killed, 15 wounded by car bomb in Tikrit.

Bring ‘em on: Thirteen Iraqis killed, 15 wounded by bomber at Iraqi recruiting center in Baghdad.

Bring ‘em on: Four Iraqi commandos killed, five wounded by car bomb in Mosul.

Bring ‘em on: Ten Iraqi policemen killed in two Baghdad ambushes.

Bring ‘em on: One US soldier and six Iraqis killed by car bomb at Baghdad’s Green Zone.

Bring ‘em on: Turkish truck driver killed in ambush near Baghdad.

Bring ‘em on: Oil pipeline ablaze near Balad.

Bring ‘em on: Insurgents execute fourteen Iraqis in Baghdad.

Bring ‘em on: Mortar attack on joint US/Iraqi checkpoint near Fallujah.

250 Iraqis killed in the last week.

All this, and yet we haven't seen any questions raised about the disaster that is the Bush administration Iraq policy. No, our so-called "news' outlets would rather explore every single explanation for why the Runaway Bride ran away. We've seen absolutely nothing on what is perhaps the most damning piece of evidence that we were misled into war--the so called smoking memo--detailing how our intelligence was shaped to fit the Bush administration's predetermined policy. You would think that such a revelation, in conjunction with rising death tolls and news of widespread fraud, would enrage people. But it doesn't because it's not covered. And that's the real problem with cable news: our blissfully ignorant populace believe they are being informed. There's a price attached to such slavish devotion to mindless infotainment. In the wake of 9/11, Bob Somerby explained:

WHILE CABLE SLEPT! This summer, your "press corps" took a pass on Osama. They pondered Gary Condit instead: Our current howler: (9/15/01) When the airwaves are devoted to Nonsense and Trivia, eventually something blows up.

Abbi Tatton, MSNBC and our good friend Ed Cone were front and center.

(Update): Imus thinks: "Anyone who writes a blog or reads a blog is a loser." His flunky Bernard calls us " political perverts"

Now we know we're on to something good. Imus who lambasts The Rolling Stones for going on tour again at their age while holding up pictures of how bad they look. Has he seen himself lately?

Ed Cone has some thoughts :...Rather than a 90-second wrapup in he said/she said format, why not pay some insightful bloggers to explore and report in a way that adds real value to the programs?

Buzz Machine: Blogvision Jon Stewart lampoons the blog segments on cable news and, as always, he's right. There's plenty to make fun of...
