Back in 1962, "Mr. Magoo's Christmas Carol" was the first animated Christmas special created especially for television. The then-cutting edge animation and a wonderful musical score by Jule Styne and Bob Merrill (Funny Girl) still make this cartoon adaptation of Charles Dickens' "A Christmas Carol" one for the ages.
Since they only had an hour for the special (counting commercials), writer Barbara Chain adapted it as a musical performance of the Dickens play by a Broadway theatrical troupe. The Broadway theme frames the acts, and the show ends with the performers taking a bow on stage. Some of the story lines have been cut, but the dialogue is true to the original book.
It's only rarely been shown on broadcast TV since the 1980s, but you can still watch it via Amazon streaming video, or on DVD. (Or on YouTube, but it'll cost you.)
Highly recommended for the whole family!
