Senate Democrats Refuse To Fund Dick Cheney's Office

vp-office-c2004.jpgBoston Herald:

Senate Democrats moved Tuesday to cut off funding for U.S. Vice President Dick Cheney's office in a continuing battle over whether he must comply with national security disclosure rules.

A Senate appropriations panel chaired by Democratic Sen. Richard Durbin refused to fund $4.8 million in the vice president's budget until Cheney's office complies with parts of an executive order governing its handling of classified information.

At issue is a requirement that executive branch offices provide data on how much material they classify and declassify. That information is to be provided to the Information Security Oversight Office at The National Archives.

Cheney's office, with backing from the White House, argues that the offices of the president and vice president are exempt from the order because they are not executive branch "agencies." Read more...

I mean really. What kind of bullsh*t do the Senators think this is? Dick head makes about that much every month in the private sector (his investment portfolio). Do they really think he'll feel the least be threatened by them cutting off this pocket change?

GB, Dick Cheney may make that money, but his staff doesn't.

We're not talking about garnishing his wages...we're talking about defunding his offices--that's staff.

Can any elected official finance his own office? I'm thinking there may be a restriction against that. Don't really know. Just wondering out loud...

This guy does nothing anyway. Why waste money on a Rich man's office? He should fund his own crap. Isn't that the "neocon" method of government spending?

Save us a buck, will ya Dick?

He has a larger infrastructure that doesn't require direct government funding. He has personal/corporate staff. He is not going to be threatened by this action. As long as he is in office, he and his associates are raking in billions collectively.

Ahh, since when has a restriction stood in this man's way? Using RNC servers for e-mail IS using private sector funding for his office work.

He can't pay his staffers now. It would be illegal to do government work (keep working) and not get paid for it I think...since it isn't sanctioned. I don't think Cheney could personally fund it either, as that would constitute bribing public officials. This might actually do something...

He'll just get the office funded privately and that will be the first stages of privatizing the Executive Branch. The Republicans will control it forever that way.

I wish the Dems in Congress were so cowardly.

The DickMaster will just grow to 40 meters tall, his horns will sprout, and he'll leave a path of death as destruction as he fumes down 14th Street to the Treasury, vaporizes the walls, and sucks (with his only mighty noodly appendage) the last vestiges of our wealth into the service of the even greater beast he serves, the mighty HalliCorpPlex Empire.

Or we could just demand that he be handcuffed....

Pericles's picture

It's a pretty sad day for America when the only way to get the Vice President to OBEY THE LAW is to cut off the salaries of his staff. Not that the salary matters much to Dick, since it's just lunch money. Now, if Haliburton threatens to cut him off...

The Congress should give Cheney a mop and tell him to start cleaning the White House and Capitol bathrooms, since they have no idea where else to put him since he "doesn't belong in" the Legislative nor Executive Branches.

I agree. It's better than what I EXPECTED Congress to do. I expected them to send a bill to Bush, saying that the Vice President is required by law to obey the law, and then tell Bush that he can sign the bill with signing authority so that he doesn't actually have to obey it. Now THAT would be the Democratic way.

You are brilliant. Put Halliburton under investigation and freeze all their assets. They have been overcharging for support, charging for unmet deliveries, war profiteering and were busted selling stuff to the Iranians during an embargo. Nail them and anybody who is Dick's gravy train.

Now that's out of the way, Dick Cheney should be tarred & feathered and run back to Wyoming!

They need to refuse to fund all of Bushes cabnet members. They are not doing the jobs we pay them to do so we should not be obligated to pay for services these folks make up as they go.

They are not following any laws of this land so we have the right to discontinue to pay all of them.

They do only what Bush tells them to do so let him pay for that crap and stay out of our pockets.

carwinrpc's picture

It's actually a pretty powerful measure. The Congressis where the funding comes from, and since the White House has made such a humongous point of protecting the perquisites of that branch of Government, it seems singularly appropriate for the Congress to remind the members of the criminal enterprise at 1600 Pennsylvania Ave that that Big white dome on the hill has its own powers.

Didn't this happen in England during the Stuarts--not exactly the same, obvously, but as I recall, James and Parliament had a feud and it caused him no end of trouble because even though he was king, he had no power to impose taxes.

Reality Check:

I do not understand why the Democrats are taking this approach. By cutting of the The Funding for the Executive Branch funds for the Office of the Vice President, aren't they actually saying that Cheney is correct, when he claims that he is not a part of the Executive Branch. Very strange. If he is wrong, and I think that he is, why on earth would you do something that affirms that he must be right.

...

SKdeA's picture

If Cheney's office is not part of the Executive Branch, then it has no Executive privilege.
If it has no privilege, then Congress can get on with many investigations that his office has refused to cooperate in. He has no protection anymore.
By defunding his office because they are pretending to buy into Cheney's excuse, the Dems have made a neat end-run around Cheney, they can now nail his ass on several important items.
I say it's FABULOUS!
And if you're worried about precedents being set, we can fix it later, lord knows there is plenty that will need it.
