Via Raw Story:
Filmmaker Michael Moore revealed on Thursday's "The Tonight Show" with Jay Leno that the Bush Administration had served him with a subpoena regarding his recent trip to Cuba made as part of his new film, Sicko.Moore told the audience that he was notified of the subpoena backstage.
"I haven't even told my own family yet," Moore remarked. "I was just informed when I was back there with Jay that the Bush administration has now issued a subpoena for me. Read more...
Michael Moore (who live blogged with us last weekend) has more videos from the Leno appearance on this site as well as his "SiCKO Medical Card" available for download.

Moore should claim Executive Producer Privilege.
How about Michael Moore treat the subpoena with the same respect Bushies treat subpoenas?
Here's an idea-he can just tell them that as soon as the many administration figures who are currently refusing to appear under subpoena show up to testify, he will do the same. After all, no one is above the law, right???
I think it's great in a way. It'll keep Moore's name in the news and hopefully get more people to see Sicko. It also lends more credence to the idea that powerful people are trying to keep Moore silent.
The game of subpoenas has started . who will win?
That's exactly what he should do. After all, subpoenas have been reduced to a completely voluntary, opt in invitation,...
Michael Moore is a true living treasure. He's fearless, truthful, and his sense of humor amidst all the depressing outrages of our days, make his presentations so precious and effective. I just love him. Thanks Michael. We need you!
............and yet even with a ban on Cuban imports, many Americans are puffing away at fine Cuban Cigars.........
...........they may fine Moore or jail Moore, but they have already lost the moral high ground.......
[refers to deleted mouthbreather]
some of us fortunately have more fortitude than cowering to threats of taking away more liberties. We actually fight for them. MM is a role model.
You know, if the WH just wanted some good tips on how to fix/improve the health care system, they could have just asked him..
I think Moore should show evidence of a failed health care system and Bush Admin. might change course for a better America.
Hope there is a happy ending for Moore and the Universal Health Care.
Great! And we can haul DeLay's ass in there for violating the cigar embargo too.
Those are completely voluntary, right?
If they haul him into court, he should just read the Gonzales transcripts to them.
This is a real test for Moore to prove his worth.
Movies are taken for granted, but facing the challenger is another issue and a real one.
I got an idea!
Pull a Harriet Myers and just don't show up!
Then our doofus-in-Chief would be faced with a decision.
Nah, you know that Moore would go to jail while Harriet, even if convicted, has a Get out of Jail card....Just like Scooter did.
All Michael Moore has to say in court is "I don't recall..." isn't that the new gold standard set by our magnificent DOJ?
I love this big guy. Hey. why not shout it?
I LOVE YOU, MICHAEL
This is actually a great way to give Mike an even bigger, better platform. Yes, keep in the news, keep him on the talk shows and magazines. We need this guy!
The more patriots we have that are brave enough to take on this vicious arista-corporate junta the better!
Keep at it Mike, Jon, Stephen, Keith, et al... Tom Paine would be proud.
You know, something just occurred to me.
Don't they usually reserve a supena for those who are unwilling to appear voluntarily?
I bet nobody even asked him to show up.
They're trying to look all Texas Macho.
I'd love it if got got a Judge that said "This is so obviously a political move, I'm dismissing it out of hand!"
This will get really really really interesting. Right now it is just very interesting...
Virginia Renegade @ 18:
Exactly! I want the truth entered into the Congressional Records so that a century from now they will find that not all of us were completely off our rockers.
Executive privilege is what the rich spoiled brat, bully Screams when he is getting his ass Kicked by a little kid !
I was thinking of what having Havana would do to me if it were stamped on my brand new passport and I took a flight there from San Jose. I cant believe my government says I cannot visit there. My own criminal government. What audacity.
While on Leno (and just getting the subpoena) did Moore put DiCaprio and Diaz on the spot. Or the U.S. government for not applying equal treatment?
The rules on Entry/Exit Requirements/Travel Transaction Limitations for Cuba has more than a few loop-holes that I'm certain an expensive lawyer would know how to leverage before-hand.
On one hand it sounds like a whiney kid going 'well they got to do it!'. On the other. Well after 18 we're not kids. I don't want my government treating us as kids deciding who can go where.
How long until they seize his financial assets? I can just see Rove with furrowed brow, then snapping his fingers and saying, "I've got it! Let's subpoena Michael Moore to distract the media from the Pat Tillman murder."
Fascists.
Mike, be a Dick, tell em to go f@#% themselves ... if Michael disappears it's time to riot ...
Not to worry....subpoenas don't matter to this administration.
late as usual
If I was Moore I'd tell Bush to go f**k himself!
Exactly abarts!
Michael Moore has REALLY done it this time!
He's proving beyond a shadow of doubt that the Bush really is an asshole.
Will Moore stop at nothing? Nothing?
Jo @ 18:
I think he should offer to testify, but off the record, with no transcript and with no follow up questions.
Isn't that what the Bushies call a fair deal?
The Bush Administration "facism" is a work in progress as we see it today with Michael Moore case, and other issues we face today in almost every facet of our government.
IMPEACHMENT.....IS A MUST.........before anymore further diterioration of our civil rights and civil liberty.
This is empirialism and DEMOCRACY is in shaky grounds.
the Pinochetists continue to use the police state to enforce their Chicago School privatization of all services agenda
Maybe its about time Moore is held accountable for his one sided stories which cannot be called documentaries. If people want socialism healthcare, then by all means , let them that want it have it. but dont count on people like Moore to get warehouse healthcare. Pelople like him feel they are above that
I am sure that Michael Moore will honor the White House Subpoena..........far more than the WHITE HOUSE honors "subpoenas" called by the House of Congress.
The hypocrites expect you to honor their call for subpoena but they will not honor the others.
So tell me what is your take on the subpoena?
Mike Dunkirk @ 37:
You guys know that you're probably not going to see Michael Moore in public ever again, right?
Maybe he should claim "film-maker privilege".
Trying to get Gonzo and Tillman off the front page.
Mike Dunkirk @ 37:
One sided? Prove it with some facts sweetheart.
Proud American @ 38:
Proud American, I was thinking the same thing. I believe Michael will follow the law and appear as he was ordered -- as all Americans are required to do. I wonder how far he'll push things once he's there?
support socialized medicine and condemn subpoena?
or condemn socialized medicine and support subpoena?
these are trying times for hedonistic Libertarians ;-)
Harley @ 42:
Great point, but don't worry, we're great at multitasking.
D @ 39:
No facts---no credibility. Your confuse your biased opinion with fact. So put up or shut up, pal.
The Bush administration has always been for big business and healthcare is no exception.
When lobbyists for the pharmaceutical companies wrote the medicaid bill, the rotten republican a-holes blatenly screwed the American taxpayers and lined their own pockets.
Go out and ask ten strangers about this and i will bet you less than two people will know what you're talking about. There's no more outrage in America today. Michael Moore has the ability to produce the outrage that's missing. They know it, and they'll do anything to stop it (supeona). They will always protect big business and money. Youtube, blogs, and websites scare these bastards to no end. Why do you think big ISP's are pushing for net neutrality? Shut down the source of these sites! Slow down the net so the news can come from the CNN, FOX, and the rest of the Lindsay Lohan news channels. Michael Moore who? Thank you Crooks and Liars for informing the people of the truth.

"It's a tough job" . . . as Bush says --
Bush isn't sure if he's part of the Executive Branch --
or even if Cheney is --
Cheney and Rove likely culprits of Wilson attack
9/11 guilty conscience -- or more
Libby pardon will be investigated
He has drunk astronauts
Gonzo visiting hospitals to get wiretapping approved
The successes of FEMA at Katrina behind him
Busted the Treasury
Destroyed our Military
Tilman scandal still festering
Congress is chasing his e-mails and documents
and what Bush decides to do is attack our BELOVED MICHAEL MOORE -- ????????
Presumably as a way to distract the nation from thinking about MICHAEL MOORE'S NEW MOVIE -- SICKO -- ABOUT HOW AMERICA IS THE ONLY NATION WITHOUT A NATIONAL HEALTH CARE PLAN --
Bush MAFIA strikes again --
If they managed to jail Mike, he would then be a martyr and a high profile POLITICAL prisoner.....someone who has just whipped the country into a fury over us getting fucked over by corporations......If this were to happen, I believe the volume of calls for impeachment would be raised up to a roar.
And I DEFY those fucks to try and do something to the 9/11 rescue workers.....even a portion of the most clueless reality denying authoritarian mouthbreathers would turn on them over that one.
V V
Moore's Gandhi moment.
This administration is totally fucked.
So Micheal Moore provides a platform for opinions that are generally excluded from the Corporate Media and he gets accused of being "one sided." That's very interesting. Anyone who knows anything about film theory knows that documentaries always express a point of view whether it is expressly stated in editorial form as Moore does or more subtly by exclusion of information that does not support its theses such as we see on Fox News and the rest of the Corporate Media. Moore is upfront and honest about his point of view, which is more than you can say about Fox News pretense at being "Fair and Balanced" and the rest of the Corporate elite owned media's claim to objectivity. So for that, he should be prosecuted? For bringing the American public a viewpoint differing from the official beltway elite opinion? For revealing the truth about the Cuban health care system to the American public unfiltered by government and corporate propaganda? So much for free speech. And you call yourself an American and spit on the Constitution at the same time? Despicable!
Mike Dunkirk @ 37:
Yes, most Americans want socialized healthcare, but I get the feeling you are in the healthcare insurance business and socialized is an icky word to you.
Yes, all of his documentaries are pretty darned accurate. Remember the 911 one? Right on target. I bet that pissed you off, didn't it.
Just don't fuckin show up. Subpoenas don't mean jack shit anymore, right?
Why should Moore be concerned about a subpoena? Apparently Miers and Bolton who failed to respond to a Congressional subpoena are unscathed by the whole ordeal. Think this is a case of justice for JUST US in the Bush administration?
What disgusting cowards these Bushies are. Brown shirts for everyone and hurry before the next Reichstag burns down!
Kudos to Moore for standing up for what he believes in and exposing this administration for the criminals they are!
Harley @ 42:
Is that all they have left? (I'd like to think) It's like a ponzi scheme unraveling.
Anyone want a good laugh. Go rent like Czech "Divided we Fall", or Dutch "Black Book". See how they treated the fascist collaborators after WWII
V V
Mike Dunkirk @ 37:
Awww, wasssammatta baby, you lost?? Here's directions home --> nutjob central
Space Coyote @ 54:
They mean something to the rest of us!
Michael Moore should show up being pushed in a hospital bed and escorted by a platoon of security guards dressed as Castro and smoking cigars.
How could the MSM ignore his cause!
BTW, lots of people are willing to shell out bucks to hear Micheal Moore's opinion. Can you imagine how long Fox News would survive if it had to be viewer supported instead of subsidized by vested corporate interests? Not very long I think. There's the real marketplace of ideas in action for you. Suck that right wingnut corporatists, Conservatives Libertarians. Nobodies going to pay to see your crap ever! You have to have corporate funded socialism to cram your BS PR down the publics collective throat.
Thing Fish @ 56:
Not to worry. There will be another Bush regime/GOP scandal next week. Sooner or later the regime will run out of folks to go after to knock their ongoing high crimes and misdemeanors off the front page.

Just wait and see what the Russian and Chinese reaction will be to this.:-(
Mike Dunkirk @ 37:
Mr. Dunkirk I invite you to come to Canada at anytime and see our healthcare system for itself it is not as you call it socialized healthcare.
Let me get this straight. The lawless and criminal Bush regime can go after Moore for going to Cuba to film a movie but we can't go after the criminal Bush regime for going to Cuba to torture (and their plethora of other high crimes and misdemeanors)?
If Pelosi won't put impeachment on the table it's past time for her to step aside and let some else take the reins who will.
the Bush regime is running out of ideas, leave Moore alone. If they end up throwing Moore in jail, it will blow up in their faces, essentially making him a martyr (without the dieing part).
Tomorrow, Moore will announce the subject for his next documentary: George Bush's Secret Love Life. The subpoena will disappear within the day.
Good publicity for Michael. Good guy, bad guys situation.
OK.
And we'll bring charges against every right wing troll on the internet who posts a comment.
difference is Moore uses facts while the right lies.
You righties scared?
Man, Sicko must be good to make the White House move like that. They managed to squeeze him in between Congressional hearings , scandal clean-ups, and Iraq money laundering. Wow. I gotta see it now. Thanks Boosh!
Moore is smarter than all of the frightwingnuts put together. He will bitchslap the dumb fuckers again. Perhaps it might be Fred Thompsons love of the Cuban cigars too.Perhaps Mike will mention the thousands of Americans that go to Cuba every year through another country. Castro likes the US dollar still. Bush is treading water now. Hes a lame duck dumb fuck and more are seeing it everyday. Need to see more ? I would suggest No End In Sight.
A movie detailing all of BushCos supreme fuckups in Iraq. Face the facts kids. [deleted--please respect the siteowner's policy].
Do you need to know more ? I feel sorry for those unable to connect the dots. The evidence is more than compelling now. Wake up America and save yourselves. The worst is yet to come.
Way to make M. Moore a hero! (not that he wasn't one already)
ooo! this is so delicious:)
i'm sorry for any of you gloomers out there but i think this is a great opportunity for m.m. he gets heard a lot more by the msm and therefore the gen public when he is the subject of the most recent w.h. mouse hunt.
thanks for the free air time nazi boys.
The point should be made that the Bush administration is actively blocking funds that could have otherwise been used to get more of the progressive healthcare message out.
Moore could invest much more money in such a campaign since he wouldn't have to put some much of it away to protect his ass from frivolous suits based on obscure remnants of colonial law (embargo against Cuba)?
It's such a waste of money to not offer preventative care to all - people end up just going into debt to pay for specialized operations down the road where preventative care could have cured such a commonly diagnosable ailment.
This administration will never miss a chance to tell the American public: "FUCK YOU".
'Nuff said?
Yeah, I think so.
.
Wow, could the Bush admin make a stupider move.
I wonder if they've all been issued their cyanide capsules. Full speed ahead idiots.
Michael Moore should testify. Like he did on Leno he could mention over and over "911 HEROS" and state how it's a crime they are not getting the healthcare they need. Then the grand jury may want to hear from the government why that's the case. In most grand juries the members can directly ask questions of those being deposed as well as ask to hear from people. It could be very embarrassing for Bush.
In any case, Moore is a journalist and they are allowed to go to Cuba. Bush would really have to go after the 911 HEROS because it's they who didn't have permission. How is that going to look.

If this is how the Bush Administration plans to silence Michael Moore and turn the public against him, it is going to backfire on them. But it fascinating to observe the extremes to which they will go to prevent any criticism of what they perceive as a threat to their grand plan for the future of this country and the world.
I'm getting worried...with the Bush Crime Family's house of card starting to fall,
I worry that they'll speed up the next "terrorist" attack here - the one they are/were
most likely holding in their back pocket for pre-election....they might need it NOW
to deflect Gonzo/Tillman/Miers/Bolten/Scooter etc...just as this subpoena for Moore
is being used as deflection.
Oh wait -- you haven't heard? Bush & Co. create and control all the "terror."
Call me crazy - and I know you trolls will, but - I have faith in Americans
NOT BUYING IT THIS TIME...I really do....well, at least the 75% of this
country with a functioning brain and a grasp of REALITY.
How about if Michael Moore just chooses not to show up, like those who work for Bush? Isn't that the new standard? Oh that's right, thumbing your nose at the law is only acceptable if you're republican or work for the WH. And so it's truly begun, our decent into tyranny. The bullies in the WH go after the little people who dare stand up to them. Michael Moore is a true patriot, a national hero, and very courageous man. Hope this causes a huge outcry. What a bunch of thugs.
The Presidential Candidates @ 4:
This is absolutely true. The amount of PR this dumb shit subpoena will give Moore could not be purchased. If he gets fined I think that fine is about $85,000. Are you kidding me? Moore will probably give them a tip for a job well done. Keeping their job performance consistent the Bush Administration did the worst thing it could have done for itself. Drawing attention to it’s incompetence.
On a side note; should this be compared to Scooter/Cheney/Armitage/Novak/Plame affair.
Harley @ 42:
Well maybe Moore can weave Sicko into the Tillman case. You know; “If we would have had decent health care maybe Pat Tillman would e alive today and the Administration would not have had to tell lies about his killing.” And; “If Gonzo would have good universal health care he could go out and get mental health care and not worry about having to pay for it.” D
Do you see where I’m coming from?
neverbeenfooled @ 79:
Is there any more doubt that we're living in the Fourth Reich?
Hitler banned movies and shut down newspapers.
Bush is banning Michael Moore's movie and trying to shut down the alternative media on the web by trying to get rid of net neutrality and installing Internet 2.
"Homeland" was originally used by the Nazi's to describe the Reich;
Paul Craig Roberts on the term "Homeland"
http://a1135.g.akamai.net/f/1135/18227/1h/cchannel.download.akamai.com/1...
So is it any surprise that we now have an agency called "Homeland" security?
They said it couldn't happen here. It already did. The only thing missing is the camps and they'll be opened up after the next terror attack to take care of anybody who opposes Bush.
If Moore obeys the subpoena he should just read Gonzo's transcript word-forfuc*ing-word in court. Then when he's jailed for contempt we'll storm the courthouse.
(If you couldn't tell, I think this move on Bush's part is complete bullshit)
Michael Moore's next muti-billion-dollar movie: "My White House Subpoena". How can the White House be this stupid???
I was wondering when this was going to happen. They are going to do everything in their power to throw the book at Moore and put him away for a very long time. I do not doubt that they will try to conflate his journalism with giving aid and comfort to an enemy of the US. Yes, it will help keep the healthcare issue in the spotlight, but Michael is in some deep shit. He needs to get himself some high-powered legal representation on this and do it soon. Their is only one single thing that the Bush junta excels at, and that is using the full power of the executive branch in the exercise of spiteful vendetta. They would not have issued a subpeona were they not planning on totally crushing Mr. Moore. The persecution begins.
Were I Michael Moore, I'd ask for asylum in Canada.
hope his next movie is 'WHAT REALLY HAPPENED ON 9/11'--I love you michael-you are the best!
Where can I get my "Free Michael Moore" bumper sticker?
He should play with them a bit and refuse to comply. Since former members of the Bush administration feel that they are not required to comply with subpoenas, the general public should have the same right. When forced to comply, he should refuse to testify under oath, the same courtesy that has been granted to numerous companies when they testified.
If the Bush Administration wants to dance around subpoenas and make arguments about why sworn testimony and transcripts are a waste of time, they should have no problem when others make the same claims.
Paul @ 87:
There really isn't a single thing that they can do. Moore is 100% correct when he states that he has every right to go to Cuba without permission as he is making a documentary. That is an absolute exception to the embargo on Cuba. It is hard to argue that someone was done illegally when the law allows for what he did to occur. This is just the usual games.
Mike Dunkirk @ 37:
So in your dimly-lit world, subpoenas, if not the entire legal system, are simply a means of revenge against someone that you disagree with? That is really all that you said.
Catalyst @ 76:
You expecting an end to BushCo stupidity ? Ive talked to Canadians that have traveled to Cuba and run into Americans there. Naturally they ask " Hey ? what you doing here ? your not allowed." The Americans usually just have a good laugh at that one. Perhaps Moore should suggest BushCo track all these embargo busting criminals down and jail them too then. Another funny is that you never hear MSM talk about the 120 million set aside initially for 911 workers , for aftercare health issues ,that he took back and tossed down the Iraq hole or into one of his pals wallets. I think Congress should hold hearings on just who at the White House leaned on EPA and allowed all those New Yorkers to inhale all that fine asbestos and mercury laden dust in the first place. You have to feel sorry for those who dont realize they are being played for suckers.

What our Corrupt Judicial System does NOT want the Public to know is that What Micheal Moore is actually showing is a -- U.S.Attorney General & Office of Inspector General -- ' illegal agreement ' to defraud the US Government and Entitled Federal Beneficiaries with respect to HMO Claims.
.
[Deleted for length. Kimberly Kimball, just post a link to info like this and quit spamming the threads with this message. Thanks-Sitemonitor]
He should tell them he'll appear when Miers and Rove appear. Until then, fuck your subpoena!!
It's simple. Just ignore the subpeona like all the White House criminals do.
Fair and balanced is what I get first....when I'm compelled to watch tv or listen to the radio then I watch anything by Michael. I watch both and that's what I call getting both sides of the story. Michael is under NO obligation to include the main stream media crap that everybody sees everyday of the week in his documentaries. He has carved out a niche...its his job; he's self-employed----he does not have to pander to the conservative agenda. And then who ever wants to buy his product can --or choose not to. Pretty simple market-based economics. That's something that the Repubs & conservatives should understand.
PS- Hang tough Michael. Respond to the subpoena when Meirs and Gonzoles does.
At least Michael Moore had an exit strategy to get out of Cuba.
This will probably get more mainstream coverage than 99% of Bush's corrupt acts. That's still good though, because Moore will use the opportunity to bring out those, I'm sure.
This is a huge error by Bu$hCo---It gives MOORE another bully pulpit from which to attack from, and greatly increases support from his admirers and fans.
Bring it on, Bu$hCo bitches!!!

I'm the "mouthbreather" in question. I see that your irony meter is not working very well today. Though I don't comment here often, I'm a loyal reader who comes here on a daily basis and agrees with the views you express. I'm a little ashamed of you, though, for deleting my earlier comment. I would have thought you would tolerate more than a chorus of applause... and that the irony would be obvious to you and your readers.
Where can we get a "Sicko health care" card?
never mind. I jut found it.
A hundred years from now when they read the history books about this great disaster. There will be a few American heros who stand out. Russ Feingold, Jon Stewart, Cindy Sheehan, Colbert, Keith Olbermann and last but not least Michael Moore. I salute him, he is a class act!
