House Passes Bush's FISA Law - American Civil Liberties Destroyed
By Logan Murphy Saturday Aug 04, 2007 8:30am
Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee (D-TX) says it all. It's official, George Bush and Alberto Gonzales now have the legal authority to spy on you and I without a warrant at any time. The vote was as follows:
Yea:227 Nay:183
There were a number of Democrats who voted for President Bush and against the American people and our civil liberties. Here's the final vote tally. It's unlikely there's anyone around in our representatives' offices at this time, but you can find their contact information here.
Update: Nancy Pelosi has written a letter to John Conyers asking him to amend the FISA bill:
Speaker Pelosi said that S. 1927, the bill passed tonight by the House to temporally amend FISA for six-months, after H.R. 3356, the Improving Foreign Intelligence Surveillance to Defend Our Nation and Our Constitution Act bill failed last night, contains many provisions that are unacceptable and she does not believe that the American people will want to wait that long before corrective action is taken. In a letter to Judiciary Committee Chairman John Conyers, Jr. and Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence Chairman Silvestre Reyes, Speaker Pelosi requested that the Committees report to the House “as soon as possible after Congress reconvenes,” legislation to amend the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act (FISA).

I'm never voting for another Democrat ever again.
I don't think it really matters who you vote for. In my lifetime I haven't seen that it matters one shittin' bit.
"So this is how democracy dies, to thunderous applause."
CafeenMan, u r so right.
Nous Sommes Tous les Juifs Allemands
I don't think I trust the Republicans with any changes in FISA. They are such liars.
Last week two Brookings Institution "scholars", O'Hanlon and Pollack did a road show on how great our military escalation is going in Iraq. You know, I didn't realize what a bunch of phony apologists those "think tankers" O'Hanlon and Pollack were until Frank Rich outed them today. Bottom feeder sell-outs like O'Hanlona and Pollack are truly the scum of the Earth. In the grand tradition of Fox and the Fox-Republicans, these partisan cheerleaders disguised as non-partisan experts try to pass themselves off as something they're not. In the process, US soldiers are dying and being wounded because of the denial and idiotic foreign policy that posers like O'Hanlon and Pollack enable through their deceit. What a way to make a living. I guess they can continue it down in Hell after they are through.
In contrast to claims of military successes, back in reality, I believe the statistics of Americans dead in Iraq last month were 81, the same number as in February and March, before the most recent escalation started. Iraqi casualties rose 33% over the prior month. And by the way on the political front a Sunni faction walked out of the government.

Fucking Republican Communists!
Its bad enough they had to support Marxist economics by blindly following Reaganomics but now they've given George W Bush his very own KGB.
Congratulations, conscum. We're now living behind the Iron Curtain thanks to your irrational paranoia.
Hold er there, Guido. How did the person in YOUR district vote? That's the person you need to worry about on this one. Tell that person that you're not going to vote for him/her.
The fact that so many people in the US don't care about true American values as expressed by the constitution and care only about the "American values" made up by right wing think tanks demonstrates the failure of education in this country and the success of right wingers at spreading propaganda. How much different is the right wing "American 'Christian' values" propaganda different from the propaganda about German values by the Nazis? Different mythology, but all intended for the same creating effect.
Sieg heil.
DEMS SEEK OUT PSYCHOLOGICAL ADVISOR, ON THEIR ‘WEAKNESS’ FOR FISA
"to defend our Nation and Constitution Act"
Let's see,

And well, as far as the Constitution goes,
They ALL shit on that since taking the oath to UPHOLD and
DEFEND it. Traitors, Treason, Tyranny
Is it time yet?
well, my representative, jim oberstar, voted nay. which reassures me. i wrote to him and thanked him for his vote. i was going to write to the other MN reps that did vote for it, like Michelle Bachmann, Tim Walz, etc -- however, I couldn't. They dont allow emails to be sent by people who arent from their district.
Please copy the names and emails of the 41 spineless dems.

"The bill clarifies that no court order is required for foreign-to-foreign communications that pass through the United States. ...
So, this 'benign' bill addresses foreigners, whose communication connections experience an extraordinary rendition to the U.S. allowing the bypass of any restrictions imposed by the foreign country.
The thing I wonder about, among the surveillance programs yet acknowledged by the administration, is whether or not there exists a program to route communications by U.S. citizens to a cooperative foreign country for the purpose of bypassing our laws and 4th amendment?

Suckers.
Are we a dictatorship with pretenses of Democracy?
Democrats let down the people that sent them to make changes once again. They seem to think that because the Republicans are so loathed that the Democrats will automatically get elected. Not so you spineless traitors! The fastest growing party in this country is the Independent Party. We loathe you all!
kenoshaMarge @ 16:
did you know that 181 Democrats voted Nay?
Zenrage @ 6:
In addition to the "Republican Communist"; be sure to add the 41(forty-one) Dem's
turn-coat who voted "Aye" to that list. Check your Dem Representative and if he/she
vote "Aye", be sure to give them a piece of your mind while they are on their Vacation
in your area. As said in another C&L thread yesterday, it is way past time to be using
"polite tactics"...they are slime and scum and I intend to call/write my Rep. and let him
how how I feel.

even if all those democrats voted Nay, it still wouldn't have been enough.
Give up on hoping that things will change in Washington. This country is not the people's anymore, it hasn't been for over 50 years now. Complain all you want about your "representatives," and "elected" presidents. We live in a fascist republic now. Get used to it.
'00 Bush inaugeration was like a big shit in a toilet bowl and the next 4 years ass-wiped with the constitution. Another shit in 04 with moe of the same. This is the near total flushing of our rights, and the scene is set for the sewer to back up with martial law or the next super power grab.
Professor Farnsworth @ 17:
Of course we knew; but what about the 41 who voted "Aye"...If they had any balls
or were in support of our civil liberties and the Constitution, they would have voted
"Nay" and this piece of garbage legislation would NOT have passed.
I really hope that EVERYONE can now see that there is absolutely no
difference between the two parties. The 2 party system is an illusion
to make people believe there is choice, when in reality, they BOTH
feed the system to the peoples disadvantage.
But alas, there should be no concern, after all, the NFL season
is starting, and joe six pack will never even notice.
Bread and Circuses anyone?
NoBuddy @ 13:
Where there's a will there's a way. You can count on it.
Professor Farnsworth @ 19:
even if all those democrats voted Nay, it still wouldn't have been enough.
Is my math bad? Add the 41 to the 183 voting "Nay" and the final vote would have been
225 "Nays"...and Bill would have failed....What am I missing???
Oh c'mon now. Our civil liberties aren't destroyed!
The government just took them away from us to keep 'em safe!
I'm sure they will give them back when the GWOT is over. In 2307.
Maybe. If we behave.
i am glad that we voted out bush lapdog talking point dependant ann north(r)up last november because my congressman john yarmuth is doing his district proud.
unfortunately ben chandler seems to be uncapable of doing the same thing.
At least my Representative, Tim Mahoney who replaced the infamous Mark Foley, voted NAY! As far as the Democrats who voted YEA they should lose their jobs next year. I don't understand how ANY Rep. would give this kind of unchecked power to bush, it defies logic. This bill is un-Constitutional it clearly violates the 4th Amendment. bush and the republicans will never be happy until all Americans hide under their beds in fear of the evil terrorists who will somehow destroy our country of 300 million plus. Pathetic
Well, it's no surprise that the Republicans want to bring down America and hate everything that America is about, but for the Dems to do this shows that they don't care enough to stand and fight. I can't believe that anyone would think this bill was good for America, what I think they thought it was good for was to get them off on thier summer vacation and that is just shameful. I am not sure where to turn if the party that is against America looses their majority in the House and the House still can't make a stand against the criminals in the Executive Branch. I expect this kind of thing from Rebpublicans I mean after all they have given us the worst leaders in American history (right up their with Bennidict Arnold) When the Repug's say you have to respect the Office of the President I have always said the past four Republican presidents have turned the oval office into the most disrespectfull branch of government. Republicans have ruined all that was once great about America but to have the Democrats give in to these Anti-American scumbags just doesn't make any sense. It's as if we have lost all of our allies and are left to fend for ourselves.
Just another example of the failed democratic party leadership.
By the way, with only 410 Reps voting(227 and 183), and there being 435 total
Representatives in the U.S. House, why didn't the other 25 members vote..and
who were they?
wldj @ 28:
and isn't it even sadder still when it's the Republicans who have Attacked us, it was the Republicans who got us into an unjust war against a country who NEVER attacked us, it is the Republicans who hate us for our freedoms and yet we don't seem to be getting much better support from the Democrats who were voted in to challenge this unchecked power.
it's a sad day in America.
The Democrats just lost me. This country has become a bad joke.
Doggiebobo @ 31:
Never mind, I see that they are listed in this C&L thread...
I thought I saw light at the end of the tunnel.
But damn, this rabbit hole goes deep.
Guido, Lover, OBGYN @ 1:
Hey.. Im not happy about this either, but the Republicans are worse - they spinelessly go along with whatever the admin suggests. The Democrats realized they werent going to be able to get through the Republicans obstructionism, and took the path of lesser evil.. There just isnt currently enough Dems in congress to override a veto right now. The fact that this law expires after 6 months means it *will* be re-visited, and can be amended then. If they didnt agree to this, then Bush would of been up there screaming about the Dems taking vacation without addressing the issue, and that wouldnt of looked good. The top Dems have promised to fix this law, and the more we get into congress in 2008, the easier this is going to be. Have faith. These things take time.
Time to ditch the Republican Party for good.

why didn't the leadership table this bill? I mean if the leadership knew they weren't going to quash this bill, by tabling it? Is this the vaunted leadership I'm hearing so much about?
fffffffffffffffffuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuucccccccccccccccccccccccccckkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkk!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
If we each singlemindedly go after any bluedogs in our state we are dissolving it from our end.
The Republicans & Democrats do not give a crap about us. We are on par with Dirt, or Oil.

Democrats suck and Republicans are worse.
Letter to my Congressman (WALSH):
This letter is to express my outrage with your YEA vote on S-1927, to provide an end-run around the 4th Amendment to the constitution which explicitly requires a court order to perform searches and seizures. This arguably unconstitutional law adds insult to injury considering for at least 5 years the Bush Administration has unlawfully wiretapped countless Americans in violation of the existing FISA statute.
What is concerning is the existing FISA law allowed the justice department TO WIRETAP WITHOUT A COURT ORDER FOR 3 DAYS. You would be hard-pressed to convince me that judicial oversight is irrelevant and cumbersome. Furthermore I welcome your insights as to how you see this Attorney General as having the character and credibility to hold this awesome responsibility.
As I currently see it, this legislation is shameful. I urge you to support and call for the oversight prescribed by the constitution to be added to this process.
There are a series of issues for which I am watching your positions closely. So far, I have been disappointed.
1. ATTORNEY GENERAL GONZOLAS lied under oath and cannot, with credibility, lead the justice department. I urge you to show leadership; call for and support his removal from office.
2. IRAQ. The "SURGE" may or may not have provided additional security but THERE HAS BEEN NO MEASURABLE POLITICAL PROGRESS. You will agree that gaining political progress was the point of the surge to begin with. Please show leadership call for and support immediate redeployment of our armed forces. We've got nearly 4 thousand dead service men, 35 thousand wounded, over 100 thousand dead innocent Iraq civilians and billions of dollars going to the pockets of well-connected private contractors and a total projected cost of ONE TRILLION dollars. Introduce articles of impeachment if that is what it takes to bring the war to an end.
3. TROOPS. You voted against HR 3159, the Ensuring Military Readiness Through Stability and Predictability Deployment Policy Act. After four years in Iraq, it is vital that our deployment cycles return to the historical ratio that allows our troops sufficient periods of time at home between deployments, Whatever one’s political views, we must take into account the well-being of those who have answered their country’s call.
4. GLOBAL WARMING. You voted in favor of HR 3221, for which I applaud you for breaking from your party to support this common sense legislation, however, you voted against HR 2776, the Renewable Energy and Energy Conservation Tax Act of 2007. I am challenged to understand your logic on this and welcome your explanation.
5. CHILDREN's HEALTH CARE. You voted against HR 3162, the Children’s Health and Medicare Protection Act of 2007. The citizens of this community find it unacceptable for any child to suffer because he or she was born into a situation where proper health care is not affordable. Your vote suggests you find it acceptable, please help me to see how I can draw a different conclusion. If and when this comes up for an override of a presidential veto, show some leadership. Break from your party and vote to override a veto.
6. STEM CELL RESEARCH. Get on the logic-train. Join 247 of your colleagues in voting to override the presidents veto. The American people want this.
This country continues its slip down the slope of isolationism and loss of civil liberties. It makes me mad, nauseous and complete despair for this government and the people of the US. And FU Dems for not stopping this. Last time I donate money to you!!

The President has been breaking the Law and his actions have been found to be UNCONSTITUTIONAL! (by more than one court!) and you just voted to expand his power in his illegal wiretapping scheme! You sir are a disgrace to our great country. I hang my head in shame for you!

Rubber stamp Congress..
I just wish the Democrats would just get some spine.
It seems the only people on the hill that take principles stands are the Republicans but for all the wrong reasons.
I'm afraid of their principled stands so I'll continue to vote Democrat, but I'm so conflicted.
kenoshaMarge @ 16:
Bullshit. You'd cut of your nose to spite your face. That's not for me. I don't loathe those Democrats who voted Nay. We need to work harder, particularly where your representative voted wrong on this. Work harder to get people to understand why this is wrong. Teach the next generation the values of our constitution. The problem with Democrats who voted for this bill is a problem of the people in the districts they represent who aren't sending the right message to their representatives. I can write to your representatives all I want, but they're not going to listen to me.
Cantor de Mambo @ 37:
I cannot speak for others on the thread, but I have written, called my Rep. numerous times
but being a Repig, he(McCaul from Texas) does NOT represent me even tho the members
of the U.S. House are supposedly/allegedly representing "We the People".
Letters, letters and more letters. That's all this current crop of Democrats seems to know how to do. NEVER any follow up action. Never any REAL action when real action is called for....even when their latest "strongly worded letter" is ignored. They are a caucus of bluffers and blunderers.
I wouldn't believe it if I didn't see it with mu own eyes. Perhaps I didn't WANT to believe itt. But today's Congressional Democrats really are spineless whimps. My days of self delusion are over.
do we have any representation?
watch this and wake up
http://youtube.com/watch?v=gU5gA6IcIpk
don't even bother amending a thing pelosi.
how likely do you think any amendment of yours will be to survive a veto? you threw our civil liberties down the bush rat hole yet again and now you expect us to believe you have any clue at all? you put *gonzales* in charge of *anything* at this point and expect us to believe you haven't lost your collective minds?
way to throw a mandate away, you and reid.
you big bad dems waiting for a 10% bush before you think you can take him on?
losers. you don't deserve the executive branch...dems don't have the gonads for it.
To quote Scott Nearing's letter to Harry Truman after the atomic bomb was dropped on Hiroshima:
"Your government is no longer mine."
Doggiebobo @ 38:
Thanks for doing your part. Keep fighting. That's all you can do. Your problem is that you're surrounded by fascists in your district. Can you change the debate in your community? We need to be active in our communities and nationally to educate people. The dumbing down of the public is a boon for fascists and the bane of the rest of us.
sassafra @ 41:
Exactly. For any meaningful or significant change or amendment to this law occuring
AFTER giving away our civil liberties is very, very remote. They are lost forever and
cannot be restored. As Mark Twain said..."Why not go out on the limb? That's where
the fruit is."...However, by your actions last night, the fruit is spoiled, the limb is
broken and the entire tree is decayed and might as well be cut down.
There are a thousand ways the leadership could have stopped this vote..
we dont believe your pr ploy ms leader.
actions vs words.. which do you believe??
Resist.
I will say this, however: The leadership of the Democratic party also needs work harder to educate and change the debate in the country.
This is an outrage and every one of the 41 dems who voted "yea" need to be unseated because they have betrayed the people.
This is basically a "defacto exoneration" of the illegal wiretapping activity of BushCo, folks and a total destruction of our civil liberties. This is no longer a democracy.
Fact is, your Civil Liberties were stripped the day Bush Took office. It's in his Genetics. When his mother barbara (lower case intended) said "Barbara Bush: 'Why should we hear about body bags and deaths? It's not relevant. So why should I waste my beautiful mind on something like that?" we should have known that this family thinks it above everything, a family of complete privilege, for whom the Constitution and the Rule of Law are just some annoyance, some stupid words that really don't apply to them.
The Family and all they stand for are totally disgusting.
"We the People". Ha!
As far as I can tell, "the price of freedom is eternal vigilance" and we, the American people, expect other people to take care of the dirty business for us. Politically we won't work for anything other than our own pet issues. Screw us. This is what we get. We are a Corporatocracy now, a perfect slave state, shackled by and to our need, our addiction to "credit". It's a beautiful, self-sustaining system with no need for the slave master's whip. We are lashed by our own desires which are fed constantly by the media, the official mouth piece of the all powerful, all pervasive corporate state.
Don't be absurd: Vote For a Third!
A third party's time has come when democrats betray the will of the people and subvert the existing laws.
Let's press Al Gore and MikeBloomberg into action. Their "time" has now come.
HAD ENOUGH YET??
I sent an e-mail to the Democratic Party via their website. I told them I have supported Jim Webb with money, MoveOn.org, John Edwards, with money and I told them to grow a spine. There are not going to be any goddamn terrorists missed by not spying on some telephone calls over a weekend and in any case the Congress could have stayed in session and written a decent bill and blamed the Repukes if it failed or sent it to the gangster in the White House and dared him to veto it.
I am sick to death of their caving and then trying to back-fill with some foot-stamping.
If they hang one or two of the gangsters, just one or two, I would be satisfied there is some progress.
I’m betting the Dems voted on it because they didn’t want to be seen as “weak on terror”.
This is like the McCarthism of the 40s and 50s, where everyone was terrified of being called a communist sympathizer.
The Democrats suck. There’s no real difference between them and the Republicans. [deleted - we're not starting that.]
Thanks to this spineless democrats we voted for office Bush agenda is undisturbed. I hope that their are new comers running for democratic ticket to rival Pelosi Harry Reid and those other cowards in office. This democrats should lose their post. They are useless bunch of waste of time.
To everyone out there who thinks that not voting Democrat next time plays into the hands of the repubes, I say this, I voted Dem last time and got a fucking repube (gutless Amy Klobuchar). If that ain't playing into their hands what is? If enough people vote indy next time, maybe, just maybe, enough of them will get elected to be able to vote down the shit laws congress is enacting. Even if they can't vote down some of this shit, at least they become the party that makes a stand against it and other people will see that there really is a choice out there.
The 41 Democrats, let's remember them come election day.
Maybe it's time for a reality check, but what the hell is Nancy Pelosi smoking? Now she writes to Conyers after the fact, asking for the bill to be amended because she just happens to think that a few Americans might just be pissed off enough to throw the entire bunch of these clowns out of office. Give me a F*$^&% break. If she truely felt that way, then why the hell didn't she do something about it before this piece of shit bill had left the Senate.
As I said last eveing on another thread. It's time to send a very pointed an clear message to both the Republicans and especially the Democrats" NOT ONE PENNY MORE" for any candidate or party that continues to throw our Constitution under the bus. NOT ONE PENNY MORE!
Screw the magnetic yellow ribbons. It's time for a change. Start placing stickers on your cars calling for us to return to Constitutional law. Put it on T-shirts, pencils, pens, but get the word out that America is WE THE PEOPLE and we won't have our country sold out from under us for some secret agenda!
With apologies to Gilbert and Sullivan-
As some day it may happen that a victim must be found,
I've got a little list--I've got a little list
Of society offenders who might well be underground,
And who never would be missed--who never would be missed!
There's the blogger at his keyboard, madly spewing truth to power--
All dottering old hippies grossly hugging tree and flower--
All children with two moms or dads who think that's really nice--
All Katrina's victims with their hands out for free ice--
And those Darfur lovers who on halting genocide insist--
They'd none of 'em be missed--they'd none of 'em be missed!
CHORUS. He's got 'em on the list--he's got 'em on the list;
And they'll none of 'em be missed--they'll none of
'em be missed.
There's the banjo serenader, and the others of his race,
And the labor-organist--I've got him on the list!
And the people who drive hybrids and then puff it in your face,
They never would be missed--they never would be missed!
Then the idiot who praises, with enthusiastic tone,
All presidents but Bush, and every country but his own;
And the lady from the provinces, who dares to have a thought,
About Mister Bin Laden and why he hasn't yet been caught;
And that liberal anomaly, the legal abortionist--
I don't think they'd be missed--I'm sure they'd not he missed!
CHORUS. He's got her on the list--he's got her on the list;
And I don't think she'll be missed--I'm sure
she'll not be missed!
And that Nisi Prius nuisance, who just now is rather rife,
The 'Activist Jurist'--I've got him on the list!
All Constitution experts who declaim for private life--
They'd none of 'em be missed--they'd none of 'em be missed.
And the 'Post-Traumatic' sufferers who cry out for support,
Who's cries just fall on deaf ears as their Leader stacks the court,
And 'St--'st--'st--and What's-his-name, and also You-know-who--
The task of filling up the blanks I'd rather leave to you.
But it really doesn't matter whom you put upon the list,
For they'd none of 'em be missed--they'd none of 'em be
missed!
CHORUS. You may put 'em on the list--you may put 'em on the
list;
And they'll none of 'em be missed--they'll none of
'em be missed!
The New World Order now begins, God help us all.......END OF TIMES
I hate these fuckers.
Please explain to me how a president with approval ratings in the 20's can exert "political pressure"?
There's something else going on here that we don't know about.
Now, I'm really scared about what these bastards have been doing.
Oh my, Pelosi wrote a letter!
That'll sure teach W bin Laden and his GOP enablers a lesson, won't it?
The Dem leadership needs to be replaced for allowing this travesty and rape of our Constitution to come to a vote
I've never given money before to a candidate, I can't afford it, but so help me God, if Cindy Sheehan runs against Pelosi, I'm tossing money Cindy's way
Until the Dems start listening more to the Feingolds of the party, and less to the Feinstein's of the party, until the Dems start telling the Blue Dogs, as opposed to the numerically superior liberal bloc, to take a hike for a change, I will do everything I can-however limited it is-to make the Dems pay for their political cowardice, and seeing as how those W Buckaroo lackey Dems fear a massively unpopular and politically isolated President more than their own leadership-Rahm Emanuel-it's obvious the Dems need a major change in leadership-I'm still willing to cut Dean a break, but only if the Dems impeach Gonzales and zero-out ALL Executive branch funding
And for those still trying to spin for the Dems complete cave-in on this issue, you better understand, that the Dems, come September, will once again roll over for W and whimper for mercy when Petraeus issues that BS called a "Progress Report"
It's bad enough that the Dems gave ANY expanded powers to Gonzales, and even worse that W gets to use our Constitution as toilet paper, but one President with these unchecked powers is more than enough, no more should EVER have these powers
By waving the white flag of surrender to the bin Laden currently occupying our White House, the Dems certainly have enabled the terrorists in this Administration who truly do "hate our freedoms"
So fine, I can't do anything about the Dems clear cowardice in joining with W to rape our Constitution, but I CAN call those worthless Dems who couldn't wait to be faithful W Buckaroos
And I plan on saying "al-Qaeda" & "Usama bin Laden" when I make those calls, after all, shouldn't the first ones to get warrantlessly spied on with this claptrap be the very same quislings who enabled it in the first place?
I'm ready to leave.
A country is two things - real estate, and culture.
There's plenty of nice real estate in this world, and there are countries with better cultures. Its looking too late to fix the culture in this one.
This is not a fit place to raise children.
Doggiebobo @ 25:
Is my math bad? Add the 41 to the 183 voting "Nay" and the final vote would have been
225 "Nays"...and Bill would have failed....What am I missing???
You arent subtracting the 41 from the rethugs.

I think that a new ribbon with "Return to the Rule of Law" or some such thing would be a great way to get some public attention. The average person does not read the blogs, I don't think. We've got to get the message out more boadly. Someone needs to come up with and distribute the things. I'll put one on both my two cars.
DigDug @ 52:
"It is genuinely incredible. The U.S. Treasury is empty, we are losing that stupid, fraudulent chickencrap War in Iraq, and every country in the world except a handful of Corrupt Brits despises us. We are losers, and that is the one unforgivable sin in America...Beyond that, we have lost the respect of the world and lost two disastrous wars in three years. Afghanistan is lost, Iraq is a permanent war Zone, our national Economy is crashing all around us, the Pentagon's "war strategy" has failed miserably, nobody has any money to spend, and our once-mighty U.S. America is paralyzed by Mutinies in Iraq and even Fort Bragg...The American nation is in the worst condition I can remember in my lifetime, and our prospects for the immediate future are even worse. I am surprised and embarrassed to be a part of the first American generation to leave the country in far worse shape than it was when we first came into it. Our highway system is crumbling, our police are dishonest, our children are poor, our vaunted Social Security, once the envy of the world, has been looted and neglected and destroyed by the same gang of ignorant greed-crazed bastards who brought us Vietnam, Iraq, the disastrous Gaza Strip and ignominious defeat all over the world. The Stock Market will never come back, our Armies will never again be No. 1, and our children will drink filthy water for the rest of our lives...Big Darkness Come Soon."

WHAT? The make up of the U.S. House is 435 Total members. 233 are Dems and
212 are Repigs. IF all Dems voted "Nay", the law would NOT have passed.
Holy shit - I have to admit I never thought this would get past the House. I am surprised....
Anyone up for a march? Seriously...
IN The Cold @ 58:
Actually, it began a long time ago. Pappy Bush made numerous references to it, especially during the month of Sept, on 11th, 1990 and 1991. Go figure.
Its just moved from the crawling stage to the walking stage.
The fact that a whopping TWO Republicans voted nay on this turd just shows what a bunch of sheep they are. That 20% of Democrats voted yay is even more troubling. Amazing how these people talk out of one end then vote out of another.
Beth @ 60:
Exactly. The best way to get the dirt on some one is to have access to their phone calls and emails. We don’t think Bush/Rove have been doing this for “national security” purposes, do we? People are talking about voting out the Democrats next time-I have serious doubts that there will be a next time. These people are in too deep to leave.
And nancy pelosi, the traitor, can take her letter, roll it into a tube and stick into whichever orifice gives her the most pain/pleasure. she wont like feeling the way the rest of us do.
If this bill is considered soooo important, why couldnt congress put off their vacation till they had a bill that didnt take away our freedom. But, nooooo, then they would have to make a BIIIIGGG sacrifice for their country.
THIS IS WHY

[Deleted. You might be able to pass this off as "fact" in wingnuttia, but not here]
little fucking late nancy
Mere words can not express my outrage! These people have spent
countless hours investigating FISA abuses and telling us how
dangerous it is to conduct surveillance without proper judicial
oversight, and when they had the chance to do something about
the problem, the folded like a house of cards.
Would someone please explain to me again, just why we elected these clowns?
They had the opportunity, and the votes to say to this administration,
"Do it the right way or don't do it at all". Insted they gave Bush and
Gonzales a free hand to do legally what they had been doing illegally
all along. The word pathetic does not even begin to describe this latest
performance. How do these people look at themselves every morning?
This vote simply reinforces the Bush/Cheney claim that Democrats do
not have the stomach or resolve to stand up to threats against this
country. They have allowed this administration to trample the
constitution and run rough shod over the congress. It taxes the
imagination to contemplate how they might respond to a real threat.
We must learn to expect nothing from these people, because nothing
is what we have gotten so far, and it must now be apparent to everyone
that nothing is what we will get in the future.
No words in the English language are sufficient to describe these people,
but for lack of any better description, COWARDS, seems most apt.
You decide.
we have been left to hope. hope is like religion, meaningless in it's relation to reality
Doesn't matter how many times Issa has words removed from the Congressional record, Gonzales is still a lying bastard.
Issa thinks we should live in Orwell's 1984, where words can be "unsaid" and the record scrubbed to reflect the reality he wants to exist.
Nadler should have upped the ante and told him to fuck off.
With this latest capitulation, the Democrats are in serious danger of losing me.
Certainly we can trust the courts to rule this law unconstitutional some 10 years from now. Our government just failed us miserably, both repub and dem. It needs to crumble and reemerge with the Constitution binding its every move.
The Democrats act like a bunch of battered women. They talk the talk, but as soon as Mr. Slapaho comes home they cave in and do whatever he wants.
Fuck politics. They're retarded games.
Fuck politicians. They're all CROOKS and LIARS.
Fuck Republicans. They're fear-mongering assholes.
Fuck Democrats. They're spineless cowards.
Fuck Conservatives. They crave the very thing they're supposed to fear: big government.
Fuck Liberals. They're too scared to make the tough choices.
Fuck the President. He's a stupid, egomaniacal son-of-a-btich.
Fuck the Congress. They're all yellow-bellied wimps who caved in to fear.
I love this country, and would die to defend it, but I will never support another Republican or Democrat ever again. They all just lost a vote.
The Champ is out.
The terrorists win. We no longer have our way of life. They hated it and
now it's gone.

Did this bill provide retroactive immunity for the telcom industry going back before 9/11?

We don't have ten years to wait for the courts to rule this legislation illegal. If there is another attack, it will be Marshall Law.
Pelosi is a coward & a fool.
Thanks for taking our civil liberties "Off the Table" you spineless [deleted - over the top.]
They lost me the minute they took impeachment off the table. The minute they failed to hold bush accountable for the previous infractions they committed in regards to FISA. Failing to force Gonzales out of office.
The 41 have just confirmed what I suspected - that the GOP and DNC should just merge -we can call them Tories, who adore 'King George' in order to really give is 'ordinary Americans' hell and destroy what made America beautiful.
The three branches no longer work for us, that much is painfully obvious. It's over folks, The Great Expirement Failed it's people.
Liberal AND Proud @ 86:
Yep, will be the same as in Bagdah and most of Iraq...without any electrical power, so
"not to worry", no need to turn off the switches since they are not working anyway.
Last one to leave the country, please turn out the light. That is, IF they let you leave.
Yeah, and don't bother trying to call anyone in The United State of Fascistan after you leave, because Alberto will be listening.
Can someone post a link that writes which congressman voted for this bill? Thanks...
The democrats lost me when they told me to shut up after the SC handed the presidency to Bush.
Yeah, I still vote democratic, but I changed my affiliation and will no longer give them money.
It's time to quit looking to them to save us or even help us.
A 3 day solidarity strike is being organized and will be called when critical mass is achieved:
pledgetoimpeach.org
"congressmen and -women" I mean, of course...
deniz @ 92:
Complete list of who voted for and against is listed above in this C&L thread.
im sure average people will we marching in the streets after this one....hahahaha im sorry fellow americans but as a "democratic people" we are a joke. the only surge we should be hearing about is the one where millions of americans take back washington. physically if necessary, but everybody is dreaming about their next SUV purchase so they can be the envy of all their stupid friends. alseep at the wheel or just plain stupid???????
That was the greatest confidence scam of all time. The country is fighting over who
can be on the supreme court, can gays really be people, who does god love the most,
elected officials stealing with both hands, and BAM! they took the whole country. Gone!
Now they openly vote on which rights we no longer need. And then take a vacation.
Goodnight

alseep at the wheel or just plain stupid???????
BOTH.. As Albert Einstein said:
"Two things are infinite. The Universe and human stupidity, and I'm not sure about the former."
Andrew @ 87:
The first line was meant to be sarcastic.
One thing this indicates is that there is still a republican majority in the house and senate. The democratic party needs to clean up their membership.
Ted @ 39:
What follow up action do you propose?
rollover Congress, roll over ...
good dog!
myiq2xu @ 80:
Since 00 repugs have taken everything they want like an armed gang of punks in a 7-11.
Just when we thought it couldn't get darker (but we knew it would). Guess whut it will be like organizing to take OUR country back. It's about to get rougher than we could ever imagine.
Nothing more to say other than plan how to get out of here and protect our kids. They are in pretty deep trouble.
This happened because the Democrats can take the so-called "netroots" for granted. They know that people like Markos Moulitsas are far more interested in the power and money they have accumulated than they are traditional Democratic issues. That is why it was so easy for him to back Joe Lieberman and the "moderate 14" who sold out the judiciary to Bush (and let's not forget that John Aravosis at AmericaBlog came out against filibustering Bush SC nominations, as well).
But the fact that the netroots are being led by enablers is not the only problem. Whatabout those who claim to be part of the "netroots", those rejoicing in YearlyKos, for instance? Do they have any interest at all in the Constitution, the war or any of the issues confronting America? If they did, they would not be supporting the same people who are now funding the war, leading legislation through Congress to allow warrantless wiretaps, etc. But there they are, at YearlyKos, cheering on their heros.
The situation now is similar to Vietnam. In the 60s those against the war realized that they could not trust Johnson and the Democrats, and they damn well knew they couldn't trust the Republicans. Well, if you back the Democrats now, and claim to be against the war, you are out of touch with your party. If you claim to be for the rule of law, and back the Democrats, you are out of touch with your party.
I don't want to hear about the Republican. All of America (save 29%) know the Republicans are evil. The problem with our government now is not the Republicans. They can not pass any legislation without the help of the Democrats. It is the Democrats that funding the war in Iraq and the war against the Constitution here at home.
Enough with the stupid letters we need to take action. Every single person who voted for this crap has voted against the Constitution and broke their oath of office. They are now a domestic enemy of the state and deserve to be tried for treason.
To those fed up with the democrats come join us socialists or even the Green party. I however wouldn't give up on individual democrats who are truly progressives and liberals though. These next two elections I think we the people need to start seriously cleaning up house in both parties.
For once, Bush is absolutely correct. Happy days Amerika.
Sometimes it does matter though CafeeMan. It just depends on your area. The most important reason to me right now to vote for Democrats is to give them the majority to really stop things especially outrageous rightwing Supreme Court justices. Other wise I think Alex Jones is right in saying everything is at the local level and that's where politics really matters. Sometimes though even having a conservative democrat like Bill Clinton in the White House can make all the difference such as with disasters and the after math of that to how we treat other country's around the world.
john, there is so much anger in the air over this, it would be really good to have you weigh in on this as well.
Dicksknee @ 104:

Another Mark Twain quote, applicable to both parties:
"Suppose you were an idiot. And suppose you were a member of Congress. But I repeat myself"
Beth @ 60:
Absolutely goshdarned right. What "political pressure" could that clown possibly have?
Has anyone thought who they will complain to when the internet is taken away?
Better start making a plan.

No, We're bringing Democracy over there...so we don't have to have it here.
What this means is that we all have a right to defend ourselves and our constitution with our minds and bodies like real men and women.

Nothing adds up. how could any thinking person vote for this? And how did we get to Iraq? Nobody
really saw that working out did they? This is how they want things, war, fear, distracted by little things.
The dems have no heart, if they haven't sold out. This is the new status quo
on a brighter note...I just got a permanent job offer in Iceland!
Reykjavik here I come! :)
Does anyone doubt that if a Democrat is elected to the White House in '08, Republicans will be the first to cry about too much power in the hands of the President?
What goes around, comes around. I just hope we can hold out for another 18 months?
112 posts and not 1 link to the full text of the bill.
S. 1927
PLEASE...
someone post it, I cannot find it.
It's great to see that there's an issue that the house Democrats and Republicans can come together in harmony over.
Destroying America.
Let's see now. If you send a letter to any of the 41 questionables, they could see YOU as a subversive and treat you as such. That's the kind of dangerous power they now have. That's the magnitude of what we just lost.
crazylove @ 122:
Sounds a bit absurd, however, IF you were to call or receive a tel. call to/from a relative
or friend in a "foreign country", and IF you disCUSSed in negative feelings how you
fel about the new FISA law, then it is probable that "they" would be listening in and
you could end up in GITMO..
All the blue dogs (gop lite) vote with the gop on the tough votes.
I will not argue for the Dems anymore but will vote for a Dem President.
"on a brighter note…I just got a permanent job offer in Iceland!
Reykjavik here I come! :)"
Congratulations, Ben! I've been to Iceland and its great! They have volcanic rock, glaciers, a highly literate and intelligent population, and civil liberties!
wow -- your country is truly hooped. Guess we'll make more room in canada for you, unless we are considered the next terrorist nation, of course.
