Fox Chyron Tech Takes A Segment Off
We've covered some of the hackery of the Fox chyron techs labeling Republicans in a scandal as a "D" or just putting up ridiculous headlines. But what do you suppose it means when the Neal Cavuto interviews reporter Laura Ingalls and FOXNews treats her not as a reporter but like a Hooter Girl and suddenly chyron tech decides that titles (including giving her name) are just not that important? Remind me again, why was Hillary's cleavage such an important story for FOX? Three full news cycles on the notion that Hillary might have breasts. And now this...well, what can you expect from a Murdoch company? I'm expecting Page 3 Girls in the WSJ any day now....

Wha... what the hell? After all the kvetching about the Hillary cleavage non-story I've been hearing, we now have a story about... cleavage on Fox. We're talking about the FOX News chyron now? Today has been full of non-stories around here, and I'm not the first one to complain.

Let me attack this from a different tack, and I can't believe I'm about to say this but, what's the opinion of the C&L staff on the news item the 'Hooters Girl' was talking about?

Yeah... that was my question. I expected an interview with y'know... a girl from Hooter's or something... which wouldn't be something unusual from Fox News. I remember a couple of years after FNS was launched, they aired a 10 o'clock news hour on regular Fox affiliate stations, and I swear every night had at least one segment about the porn industry.

I THINK the C&L point here was that it is Faux News that is basing their operational procedures with their genitalia here; when Clinton makes a point, Faux makes a point to look at her tits, when Laura Ingalls makes a point, Faux makes a point to look at her tits. The behavior is consistent, females are regarded as subjugatable eye candy and nothing more.
Laura Ingalls has a name. My guess is if her collar were any higher, they might've remembered it.
I am not following the scandal here. What seems to be the issue? Is C&L suggesting that because the person communicating the information is not credited that the information itself is somehow in doubt. Please C&L, explain...

This has to be one of the worst C&L postings ever. You took down a bad post yesterday on Barry Bonds. You should take this down too. Absolutely pathetic. Why would you stoop to calling a woman a "Hooter girl"? Clearly this is intended to be an insult. Yet, most of us were disgusted when people focused on Sen. Clinton's cleavage. And we rejected Sean Hannity asking if Jeri Thompson "worked the pole." Why reduce anyone to a piece of their anatomy? Should we call Elizabeth Edwards a "Hooter-less girl"? Or Lance Armstrong the "ball-less wonder?"

What I think the commenters in large have missed: Fox News knows their audience, and knows that hiding jiggly flesh like that behind meaningless words would piss them off.
To hell with cleavage, I want nipples, then I wouldn't register a thing she said. That would be a very good thing.

My job is to highlight the framing and hackery of the way news is delivered to us in the MSM. I find the way Fox chose to do this insulting and highlighted it. The shadow of a hint of cleavage from Hillary Clinton is enough for FOXNews to do 3 days on how calculating she is to show her womanliness. Yet Laura Ingall doesn't even get the dignity of her name on a chyron lest we miss a second of her cleavage. If you read the link I provided for you (which would have interrupted your completely unfounded insulting of me) you would see that I was not the only person (or female) who saw it that way.
Are there more important stories? Sure there are, and we try to point them out as well.

When I watched the video, I was puzzled at first. It took me a minute as I didn't know what a "chyron" was, but then it hit me: They put nothing up on the screen to block the view of her chest.
Not big news, granted, but I do like knowing how these people think: reversing the "D" and "R" when it suits them, Scooter Libby "not guilty", etc. It just makes a person a more informed viewer.
Personally, I never see Fox News except at the gym, where several of their huge TV screens *always* have Fox News on. I noticed several years ago that Fox News is supposed to be serious, yet offers their "serious" viewers many opportunities to be titillated. It is the stuff Jon Stewart has been so good about exposing to ridicule.

The directive is probably to keep something down in that area of the screen that will capture the attention of their audience. Since the cleavage sufficed, there was no need to put up silly words that aren't even true.

Why all the push back against C&L on this one? This akin to the Daily Show's piece on "News I'd Like to F*ck", where with all the competition for viewers they are pulling out all the glamour girls and exploiting the sex sells montra. The only thing that's shameful here is not the thread but the fact that news, the people's critical tool for keeping their gov't in check, has been cheapened and those who present it have been reduced eye candy just to keep our strict attention.
In all fairness, the director is the one who tells the Technical director to ready the chyron into the switcher---the chyron operator may have advanced her name/id chyron for its matte, but the director never called for the TD to matte her name. So, your complain really is with the director and not the chyron operator.
Faux Noise only hires whores, so what can they do??
