As a site note, I'll be off for the next couple of weeks. Blue Gal and Steve from The Carpetbagger Report will be holding down the fort with John. Be good and I'll be back at the end of the month. Peace- NB

i'm glad you'll be off... hopefully fewer turkey posts will make it in here (yes, I said it... not a fan of your work)...
[And the point of your crybaby comments? Drop in anytime to share and don't forget to leave the name of YOUR blog, so we can check it out. Oh, right, you don't have a blog, just a crybaby attitude-- Sitemonitor]
whoa. Sunday bitch slap
NSA technology can be used to target those who have aided illegal activity: Former and current WH counsel.
I wish some bitch would slap me.....
so lonely!
losing faith @ 1:
Jesus, losing faith, you've got a lot of gall. Man, let us know where you work so we can come and tell you are how shitty you are at your job.
Anyone following this story? Iraqi government involved in arms trafficking in Italy?? So, are we going to invade Italy too? And what about the arms we gave away--the 190,000 missing guns? Maybe we need to invade ourselves.
http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20070812/ap_on_re_mi_ea/iraq_operation_parabe...
Angela @ 6:
Angela, could you send that to john directly. This story is friggin scary.
Hey, Strawbs,
How's things? Haven't chatted in a while, hope all is well on the home front.
Yeah, Losing Faith is just another clueless loser. Thanks, Sitemonitor.
Now all we need is the power to elect a President of our choosing. The media has already decided on Hilary; that did that over a year ago.
Nicole,
i'm glad you'll be off... you deserve it!
BTW - Spread the good word about us in Europe.
On the subject of the cartoon--I don't think Hillary having all that unfettered, unoverseen power (and that thought scares me to death) is an unintended consequence. Hillary is a not-so-secret neocon. All that anti-Hillary stuff Cheney has been spouting is a form of psy ops to encourage lefty people to vote for her. He knows how much he's hated and the theory is if he says bad things about her, liberals will vote for her. She really is Cheney in a pantsuit. By the way, my son, who to my eternal regret is the hardest of hard-core neocons, says none of the GOP field appeals to him, but he can see a lot of good in Hillary, so he's going to vote for her.
Gregory! I'm just kickin' along. PS Did you catch that link Angela provided? Importing MORE weapons into Iraq and the Iraqi government placed the order. Tet Offensive?
You have to see this video!
http://suzieqq.wordpress.com/2007/08/12/video-surfaces-of-cheney-in-1994...
Slightly OT, but I've been reading on a few blogs and even in the American and British MSM that there is talk of bringing the draft back. Could you imagine?!? The moment they reinitiate the draft this war will be OVER! And it's about time, Jesus...
[deleted--Our commenting policy regarding civility extends to our contributers...Buh bye, little troll]
Helena Montana @ 11:
So, in other words, (i) Hillary is Cheney's mini-me, and (ii) Cheney is truly pro-Hillary, which is why he bashes her, part of his plan to fool dim-witted liberals to support her.
Thanks for shedding the light on this, Helena Montana. It has been remarkably illuminating, in a blinding kind of way, if you know what I mean.
Maybe there's hope after all.
Below is excerpted from George Will's (who's not generally in our camp) column in the August 13, 2007 issue of "Newsweek" - and well said, I might add.
Contrary to the Constitution's mandate that the president "shall take care that the laws be faithfully executed," the current president, much more than any other, has issued "signing statements"—essentially, line-item vetoes, which are unconstitutional—to tell the executive branch that some provisions of bills he signs into law need not be enforced for constitutional or policy reasons. As Savage writes, "If a president has the power to instruct the government not to enforce laws that he alone has declared to be unconstitutional, then he could free himself from the need to obey laws that restrict his own actions."
Contrary to the Supreme Court's rejection of President Truman's 1952 claim of an inherent power as commander in chief to seize steel mills to prevent a wartime strike (Justice Jackson concurring: "No penance would ever expiate the sin against free government of holding that a president can escape control of executive power by law through assuming his military role"), this administration claims not merely inherent but exclusive presidential powers to:
Treat all of America as a battlefield on which even American citizens can be declared "enemy combatants," seized and held indefinitely, and intelligence can be collected by any means the president orders.
Disregard—or interpret into nullities—provisions of the Geneva Conventions, the Convention Against Torture or U.S. law that inhibit the president from acting as "sole organ" of the nation regarding national security.
It would be the role of a constitutionalist candidate who promises that, as president, he would prune from his office much of the grandiosity it has acquired from audacious recent assertions of uncircumscribed powers.
strawberry @ 7:
Thanks Strawb, I just did so. I notice another person posted in a comment on another thread. Story sure freaked me out--will it be the headline tomorrow one wonders?
Indigowatcher @ 14:
Yeah! Once the draft starts the Iraq war will be OVER! In the wink of an eye! Just like Vietnam!
Ummm...errr... Uh oh....
Get used to this one:
[Deleted. Wacko but entertaining conspiracy theory]
Yes! That cartoon is awesome. What doesn't get talked about with all this ever-expanding governmental power is why anyone thinks that it will improve with a Democrat in power. Power is hard to give up. I would like to think that we would go back to where we were before GWB but I'm pessimistic.
U.S. funding large number of new city-Surveillance Camera Networks.
This is from the transparent society:
According to Brin, criticism is valuable due to the fact, that our privacy has been tampered by the cameras. Although it may help the law enforcement officers as well as the beaurecrats to keep an order in and around the country, yet it limits our privacy rights. He is also critical of those in charge that exercise sovereign power that watches through universal monitors. He argues that will average citizens also share along with the mighty the right to watch the watchers? Who will watch the cameras? How well do we know who the watchers are? And what was their true purpose for surveilling the entire country? Is it one of control? These watchers might getaway from every crime in the pretext of homeland security.
Folks, this is what Orwell warned in his book - The POLICE STATE.
I'm voting for Kucinich. Like just about everyone in Washington, he knows damn well JFK was taken out, as was (in all likelihood) Wellstone, but he still keeps plugging away.
While Obama's trying to overcompensate for his inexperience and his racial insecurities by squawking like a hawk and endorsing preemptive war of aggression, and while Hillary's sucking up to the likes of Rupert Murdoch and Larry Silverstein, Kucinich is introducing articles of impeachment for the Big Dick.
At this point, I'd rather vote for the guy with the guts to do the right thing, rather than settle for a stopgap gatekeeper.
Kucinich probably can't win, and things are probably going to have to get a whole lot worse before they can get better, but I say let's air it all out and get it done with!
*should read: "...introducing articles of impeachment for Dirty Dick."
(See, ya had "Tricky Dick", and now ya got "Dirty Dick".)
It's American political tradition... when you're leader's a real scumbag, hit 'em below the belt.
The left came up with "Tricky Dick", and the right came up with "Slick Willie"...
Here's something to think about. Which democratic candidate(s) would you trust to give back all the power grabbed for the White House when they take over? And which candidate(s) would revisit the Patriot Act and the warrantless surveillance program?
Karl Bauer @ 23:
im voteing for kucinich allso and i say if folks dont want good government only someone they think will win even if were no better off were screwed,
GMFORD:
That's easy, the only ones who would do that are Kucinich, Gravel and Ron Paul.
Tyree:
Amen, old friend.
GMFORD:
Yes, I know, Paul's a Republican. My point is, those are the only three patriotic American's running. And, not coincidentally, they're the three candidates who scare the hell out of the corporate globalists the most,
What I wish for: A nice relaxing, well-deserved vacation for Nicole.
Oh, also a restoration of basic civil rights and world peace.
But in the meantime, enjoy your time off from C&L!
I blog there:

We ran off most of the wingnuts.
Losing Faith (post #1),
Your words are a bit harsh. Nicole does do a lot of really good work. But I do agree this site is a bit too saccharine, especially considering how dire things really are.
I've said for years, not a Goddamn thing is going to change until we all commit ourselves to the truth, and nothing but the truth, 24-7.
Unfortunately, C&L still refuses to go after these neocons for their obvious complicity in the attacks on the day that shall remain unmentioned, preferring instead to nip @ the ankles (i.e., shooting @ lame ducks like O'Reilly and Malkin).
You know, a lot of people said I was a tin-foil hat-wearing lunatic after the 2004 elections when I said Diebold was hacked -now, everyone knows it's true.
C&L really ought to work on making that reaction time a little snappier...
[And you could work on building your own site, if we're not snappy enough for you-Sitemonitor]
Dear Nicole,
Hope you enjoy your trip and just wanted to say that I enjoy your postings and especially like to hear your tidbits from the world of music, I can only dream! I hope you dont take any of the comments to heart, as these comment threads are increasingly flamey. Which is also what I was driving at in another thread in case any of you C&Lers thought I was having a go at you.
All the best!
m.
I think this blog is one of the best and use it all the time arguing with wingnuts.
The videos shut them up.
Have a great vacation.

exactly. the video here is what makes this site (and thinkprogress) so damn effective.
i just wish all of us who despise neocons would stick together a bit more. that is to say, i wish sites like c&l would be less antagonistic toward sites like prisonplanet, and vice versa.
alex jones is kind of a nut, but he's a good nut, and he's totally unafraid to do the dirty work.
c&l is a bit afraid to take on the dirty work, but they chisel away at neocon insanity on a daily basis in their own way.
my point is, those of us who are essentially on the same page should stick together....
that is to say, let's all make this a slightly better america than the one we inherited...
may i propose a toast to baby jesus? god bless you, little amigo!!!
Oh, and Chris Matthews checks out a reporter on Hardball. I guess Fred Thompson and Ann Coulter aren't the only ones he moons over.
Didn't a talking head at CNN do something like this last year? Glenn Beck or somebody offering to take nude photos of the female reporter on his show? Maybe I'm way off.
We so desperately need professionalism in the MSM, and instead, this is what we get.
Goofballs.
Moonsha, i saw that video the other day...
Given the nasty rumors surfacing re: Madame Palfrey, all I gotta ask is...
"Got Blackmail?"
Or, is Dirty Dick really just bats-in-the-belfry bonkers?

I'll miss you Nicole - have a great time!
Karl Bauer @ 38:
Alex Jones, I tried downloading Farenheit 911 and ended up with a video of how the gop are going to use the war on terror to steal our freedom.
Most of the video has turned out to be spot on.
I think kos is onto something big with the Netroot Nation.
I think all left wing sites and movements should use the people movement to attack the neocons in the political arena.
Here's something I've been thinking about for a while, and since this is an open-thread I'll go ahead and say it:
Here in America, we ABSOLUTELY need the brightest patriots to be part of our intelligence agencies.
The problem is, if you're smart enough to figure out the official 9/11 report is utter horse$#!+, you're probably not going to get hired by the NSA, FBI or CIA.
And, so, this once beautiful and glorious nation is probably going to go down the toilet.
the cartoon......it's going to be interesting to watch the repugs SNAP when a Dem gets in office net time(08)..to see them make complete hypocrites of themselves trying to remove all those powers from a Dem....
Curtilingus @ 4:
I could give you Condaleeza Rice's pimp's cell number.
have a safe trip Nichole......put down a few pints for me.
sorry.........................Nicole..........thats no way to say have a nice trip
"All crime is rooted in hate," - Tucker Carlson
What a typically parasitic thing to say.
Change is rooted in hate (rationalized hate, but hate for the status quo of a thing, none the less).
Crime is based on personal insecurities stemming from the inability to compete in society on a social, economic, political or spiritual level.
@1. Nicole is not a bad blogger. she is pretty good. I dont see any problem with her. But CL, I feel , has lost the speed of posting news. I used to like it very much few months back. But it is not a big deal and they can get back on their toes pretty soon. Benen is also a great blogger.
mudshark @ 47:
I would love nothing more than to see them get all tongue tied and red faced. Unfortunately, this is an issue of defending the American people and above all else the Constitution. Regardless of a Dem or Rep president, we should keep up the pressure to remove every signing statement and fight to put more strict guidelines surrounding executive privilege.
Reminds me of the Repubs threatening to go nuclear on the Democrats over Filibuster.
The repubs thought they would hold the majority. Didn't turn out that way for them. But, if the Repubs did in fact inact the nulcear option as they had thought. The Repubs wouldn't be enjoying their obstructionism they are inflicting on the narrow majority with their filibustering..
Don't worry, Hillary or Obama or another Dem would never abuse power, no-sir-ee.
Have a great trip. You'll be missed.
If Hillary becomes Madam President, would that make Bill John President?
