Holy Crap!

Jesus truck

We haven't done a Holy Crap at the blog round-up for a while, and lately the great blog Talk2Action has had some doozys:

An evangelical group promoted by the Pentagon to "entertain the troops" has violent, homoerotic t-shirts available.

Reverend Wiley Drake, former Vice President of the Southern Baptist Convention (yeah.) is calling for "imprecatory prayer" against church/state separation advocates Americans United. Wiley mentions that his followers should pray for God to "smite" the AU folks. Punchline: Drake was challenged by AU for using church letterhead to endorse Mike Huckabee.

I was having a hard time holding back the laughs before, and then the General wrote one of his special missives to Drake.

I was just on the Jesus General site and there was an ad for "Baptist's for Brown" and if any of you have a moment you really should check it out. It's absolutely brilliant in it's deranged absurdity. It took me a few minutes to realize it was real and not parody. The best is a banner stating that Sam Brownback is endorsed by Jesus himself. Well, they probably think it's worth the expense. Look at it this way: When the Rapture begins, the people sittin' in that van will have a shorter distance to travel to Heaven than those so-called Christians travellin' in an Accord or a Malibu. I'd warn against taking excessive glee in the stupidity of charlatans professing to represent Jesus Christ but it's old hat already. These right wing idiots no more represent mainstream Christianity than right wing whipping boy Ward Connolly represents the left.

Now I'm about as liberal as they come. However, I'm also a Christian. What disturbs me almost as much as these right wing jerks who want to usurp Jesus' name for their own ends and commandeer him into the GOP is the almost equal zeal that too many on the left are to ridicule and dismiss faith itself.

Hey, I'm cool with blasting these phonies, I do it myself every time they get exposed. Let's just not make the mistake of believing they have anything to do with Jesus or his teachings. It's amazing and saddening to me to not only hear some churches promote the GOP because of abortion and gays while completely ignoring the GOP's long tradition of lies, theft and death. That' not cool. What's not cool also is how we let people on our side marginalize our party and beliefs to the point where average Americans assume (sometimes correctly) that the left is hostile and contemptuous to their faith. So the only other option for these people unfortunately becomes the GOP phonies who wear their so called Christianity on their sleeves.

Ridiculing the core beliefs of others doesn't make you more intelligent, or reasoned or .. i don't know.. urbane?.. it just makes you the primary source of why we can't seem to get Democrats elected in some areas and pretty much makes one a self aggrandizing idiot. These sort of threads and discussions whenever anything Christian pop up tend to elecit more ridicule than is good for our cause.

Yes, I feel strongly about this. And yes, i expect flames.

So you have a problem with churches promoting the GOP because of abortion and gays, but you don't seem to specifically criticize the right-wing position on abortion and gays, just that churches shouldn't be aligned with the GOP because they're morally inconsistent, the lies and theft and death. In my opinion, anything short of full support for gay equality, including gay marriage, and a position that homosexuality is entirely morally neutral, anything short of that is bigoted. Is this also your position? In the vast majority of states, it's still perfectly legal to discriminate against gays (employment, housing.) I mention that because I know far too many straights just assume gays already have equal rights (aside from gay marriage), and that isn't even close to being the case.

whomod's picture

Well, my position comes from actually having gay friends since high school. So I don't think I'm bigoted in the slightest. And no, i'm not closeted. Any more than having black friends makes me secretly black or having "jungle fever" or something. Geez. Dude, no need to rail and lash out. This is exactly the type of attitude I'm talking about. If it claims to represent Christianity, it must be challenged and attacked with as much venom and hostility as humanly possible.

As far as my opinions on gay marriage, gays in general and abortion, it all pretty much amounts to me having been vehemently for them to gradually just neutral on the subject. I'm not judge and jury although I am aware that the bible condemns homosexuality. THE BIBLE, not me. I'm not God so I'm not here to judge anyone. I'll just go about accepting and extending a hand of friendship to my gay friends as per usual. We'll go out to the Sunset Junction as per usual, well go to concerts and clubs as per usual.. If God has a problem with gays, then God will be the judge, not me. Jesus wasn't the type to go round condeming people anyways. I don't get where these right wingers think they're representing Jesus by doing just that. He railed AGAINST that type of thing.

Besides we have the U.S. Constitution guiding this country, not any theocracy. So gay rights or marriage is not an issue to me as I'm not one of these right wingers calling for theocracy either.

CD-

It's beyond weird. It's crass consumerism in the name of Christ.

I have lived nearly my entire life in Grand Rapids, MI, the capital of Christian publishin'/marketin'(Eerdman's, Kregel, Baker and the largest, Zondervan Publishin'- now a brach of Murdoch's NewsCorp). The first "WWJD" bracelets- a muli-million dollar maker for Lesco Corp.- appeared in neighborin' Holland, MI(to her credit, the creator of those bracelets didn't make any money off of them). I've been noticin' the evolution of the mass marketin' of Christian books, Christian music, Christian clothin' and other Christian sundries. There is big money bein' in the name of Christ. It's been goin' on since before the rise of the Moral Majority in the mid '70's, and part of the profits go to the campaign chests of one party- and that party ain't the Democratic Party!

What I'm gettin' at is that while you, CD, and you, whomod, is that what many on the left(I'll discount the atheists here- their arguments are outside of the mainstream of the Democratic left- though I'll respect their right to their own belief) find wrong with the Christian right isn't their faith in God and Christ, but their trust in those who exploit their faith by pickin' their pockets and use those purloined profits to purchase palacial Paradises.

I ask ya this: If they were witness to this corporate consumerism in the name of Christ, what would Luther and Jesus do? We know what they did in the past. Who's to think they would act any differently now.

Well as far as what would Jesus do, he went apesh*t inside the temple if you recall. He'd insult the religious leaders of his day to their face. He would have none of it. Jesus was about as anti-establishment as they came.

This is what I'm getting at. THESE PEOPLE DO NOT ACCURATELY REPRESENT JESUS CHRIST.. Just the opposite I think. and my other point was that too many of us are more than happy to confuse these charlatans with the faith they claim to represent.

These people are getting fleeced by the Republicans and by their own religious leaders. RELIGIOUS. If you study the word, Jesus came to destroy religion, not create more of it. If they're overwhelmingly Republican, we need to look to ourselves as to why that is. Why can people who lie us into a war, fleece our pockets, deny us health care, have us working to barely stay alive while CEO's collect record profits command the attention and the votes of people who claim to follow a man who stood for the poor and downtrodden. It has a lot more to do than simply abortion and gay rights I think. It's as fundamental as this thread where Christianity itself is mocked and ridiculed by some. I don't think anyone likes to be mocked and ridiculed for their beliefs. If I'd do it to Buddhists or Hindu's (or gays), I'd immediately be called out as some bigot. Somehow because Christianity is familiar, it seems OK to mock it.

With regards to "mocking" the beliefs of fundamentalist Christians, I find it very difficult to take anyone serious who believes in casting out demons and speaking in tongues. By that standard, every schizophrenic who has gone off his medications should be awarded tax exempt status.

If these people do not reperesent the views of "mainstream" Christianity, then it is past time for the sane Christians to create a counter movement against them. Unless, of course, they are content to benefit from the efforts of the theocracy movement.

Please, I just asked for a clarification. Accusing me of "railing and lashing out" is ridiculous.

And no, i’m not closeted. Any more than having black friends makes me secretly black or having “jungle fever” or something."

Where the hell did that come from? You're so paranoid anyone might think you're gay you have to put a disclaimer in just because you mentioned you have gay friends? That's really treating gay people as radioactive. "Yes I have been in the company of homosexuals, but let me make it clear that I am not gay!"

As far as my opinions on gay marriage, gays in general and abortion, it all pretty much amounts to me having been vehemently for them to gradually just neutral on the subject."

Neutral, well you don't support something you're neutral about. Neutral means you don't take either side. I'm not sure if that's the position you meant to convey, but neutral is the definition of noncommittal, so the question remains whether you support gay rights, or don't care either way. And I don't consider this a frivolous issue, millions of Americans are still being denied basic civil rights in 2007. Liberty and justice for all... heterosexuals. A simple "Yes I support full gay equality including marriage" would've succinctly resolved this matter.

I am aware that the bible condemns homosexuality."

That may be your opinion, but it certainly isn't a progressive one. You are aware opinions are divided on the subject I'm sure, however apparently more progressive interpretations haven't swayed your view.

Jesus wasn’t the type to go round condeming people anyways."

So why do you go around supporting the reich-wing interpretation of the bible that demonizes gays? You say you don't judge, but then you say you agree with that judgmental interpretation. The idea that love is a sin should be considered absurd on it's face.

And also some of the same folks who helped fund the Creation Museum in Pittsburg,
Tennessee...a place where we can go and see a replica of Noah's Ark depicting that
man and the dinasours co-existed "only" 6,000 years ago and survived/were saved
because of the work of Noah building an ark that must have been the size of 10 or

Um, the atheists are just as much a part of the Democratic "left" (if such a thing exists anymore) as the Christians are. And we're just as concerned about those on the "religious right" as you are. So don't write us off as "fringe," OK? Because for the most part, it's the atheists and agnostics who are taking on these freaks on the Right, not the liberal Christians. Non-theists have more at stake here.

I just have to point out what's going on in that second shirt in the article, where they rework "UFC." My parents are pretty active in their church (and totally liberal!), so I often go to Christian bookstores to get them presents for holidays... anyway, it never ceases to amaze me, and disturb me, how out-to-get-a-quick-buck-at-the-expense-of-believers these places are. Famous logos of other big corporations are often blatantly ripped off and given a Jesus-y spin, and I don't understand how it isn't copyright infringement. That UFC thing is just a small example... don't know why I had to mention it. Just irks me.

Sarah, I'm not writin' atheists off at all. But to call the mainstream of the Democratic Party atheistic- as someone like CD tends to do a lot- is simply absurd.

And I'm an agnostic, myself, with animist leanings. But I can't help but readin' between the lines of the Gospels and findin' some moral truth in 'em. Label me a Samaritan, I guess.

My first thought was "Cool Van!!"

Definitely a Photoshop job though. I've airbrushed murals and flames on vans and motorcycles and use Photoshop quite a bit for print work. And you can tell it's a Photoshop job since it has that fussy blurred effect in comparison to the other parts of the van.

But that doesn't really matter. It still looks cool.

It definitely represents lame brain right-wing Christian American thinking though. It's one reason I quit going to the Baptist Church.

Jesus was more on the liberal side then the "let's kick ass arrogant Republican side". I just don't get how they can equate themselves to Jesus. The hypocritical Republicans say "Satan Sucks" but how many of the those hypocrites have been lured by Satan's temptations? It speaks volumes. Just look at their divorce rate and examples of their same-sex perverted exploits while they are married. It's definitly the "Dream Machine" of the Religious Right.

Johnny's picture

So same-sex sexual relations are "perverted", and a result of being lured by Satan's temptations? I love how I'm the only one in the thread bothering to call anyone on these homophobic comments. It's obvious most straights here just want to claim Christianity for liberals, and then say it's really them Republicans who are the Satan-worshipping homos.

I think ya missed the tongue planted firmly in the cheek, Johnny.

Just remember, when C&Lers are laughin' at a Republican guy givin' a blowjob, it's not about the fact that he's a guy givin' a blowjob, but that he's a Republican guy givin' a blow job.

Ya see, it's funny because it's Republican hypocrisy. Like right wing Christian Republicans who espouse anti-gay beliefs tryin' to recruit soldiers to their religion with homoerotic t-shirts.

Johnny's picture

Yes I get that, when that's the case, which I don't agree it was the case with Chip's post. He said he doesn't see how they can equate themselves to JESUS. He's not pointing out the hypocrisy of them not living by the rules of fundamentalist Christianity. He's saying Republicans don't adhere to the true Christianity, what JESUS taught. Because of their high divorce rate and "same-sex perverted exploits." And there's no excuse to link gays to "perversion." A lot of "liberals" have taken all the coverage of Republican hypocrisy to mean practically all Republicans are secretly gay. It's inaccurate and homophobic. Ultimately it doesn't make much difference which party is blaming it all on the gays.

I can't recommend this site enough:

http://baptistsforbrown2008.wordpress.com/

In case anyone is curious, here is a sample of "imprecatory prayer" from the same loving xtians, unedited:

Father God,

In our hearts we believe that you will hear our prayers and will put all these curses upon our enemies and on those who hate us, who persecute us. We will keep not silence, for the mouths of the wicked and the mouths of deceit are opened against us; they have spoken against us with lying TONGUES. They have compassed us about also with words of hatred, mockery, and deciept; and have fought against all that is Holy without a cause. In return for our agape love they are my adversaries, but we now resort to prayer. They have rewarded and laid upon us evil and slander for good, and hatred for love. Set a wicked man over them as judge, and let a malisious accuser stand at their right hand come Judgment Day.

When Liberal talk show host Randi Rhodes and her followers; when the wicked and mockers at Democratic Underground are judged, let them be condemned, and let their prayers for leniency be turned into sins. Let their days be few; and let others take their offices and charge. Let their children be parentless and their souses become widowed. Let their children be continual vagabonds as was Cain and beg; let them seek their bread and be driven far from their ruined homes.

IN JESUS NAME, I BIND UP EVERY DEMON COMING ACROSS THE COMPUTER LINES, AND I RETURN THEM AND ANY CURSES.

In Your Name, Amen.

http://baptistsforbrown2008.wordpress.com/

These are the people who are busily "converting" our democracy to a "Christian Nation", and here you see how they practice "agape love" for their enemies. Oh, and they believe demons roam the "computer lines", to leap out through the flatscreens of good xtians everywhere, and DRAG THEM TO HEYALL! And they also think we're sitting around continuously transmitting "curses" to "persecute" them.
You'd think their iron-clad faith would protect them...

Chip's picture

Johnny,

Andy K got exactly what I was saying.

Two things came to my mind when I said "same-sex perverted exploits." First was that Republican Congressman who was making perverted calls to those pages and that recent episode of another notable republican having oral sex in that public restroom. I'm not homophobic and don't believe it's the government's business what goes on behind close doors with mature consenting adults. But it's these way out there episodes where these anti-gay family value Republicans who praise Jesus one day, contradict themselves the next and actually do the things they are totally against whether it be having sex with another person of the same sex or when they can't even keep their marriages together.

I stopped going to church awhile back because of the Bush loving Republicans in my Sunday School class bashed the gays and thought it was their business to get into everyone's lives. But my wife and I were the only ones in that class who weren't divorced or going through a broken marriage. They thought it was great Bush invaded Iraq and thought civilian deaths were just part of the process. But these same people are anti-abortion. I finally told them you can't be pro-life and pro-war at the same time. Same with the gay issue. You can't be sodomizing your brother one day and proclaim being gay is the act of the devil the next. You can't be bashing gays one day and screwing up your own marriage the next.

My point is those right-wing Jesus freaks are basically hypocrites. Ye who is without sin cast the first stone.

We pray today that you will watch over Billy Bob's McDonald's, Coors, Halliburton, Cheetohs, Valvoline Chevy and ensure his dual carborator fuel-injected, split differential, turbo-charged Chevy engine will perform miraculously today.

We hope you will watch over their safety as you provide us with tantalizing crashes and we pray the the Budweiser doesn't run out this time like it did last year. As we chow down on pulled pit pork barbecue, may we take a moment to reflect on our great commander in chief kickin Muslim ass in your Holy land as you told him to do. May he stop Mooohamed from appearing on our dollar bill.

Thank you, Lord for all the natural disasters you send to kill off all the gays. May you instill a sense of charity in those today that may wish to donate to my God Hates Queers website, where you can purchase the latest version of The Bible, now filled with illlustrations in case you followers can't read so well. For the low love donation of $29.95, this beautiful new Bible can be yours and Jesus takes all major credit cards.

May you allow the latest American Idol wannabe to remember all the words of the national anthem and sing on key, and if you would, Jesus, please teach my congregation to sing on key as well. Please bless this racetrack, our Christian nation, Fox news and my new God Hates Queers website, not to mention my new illustrated Bible for $29.95, all proceeds of which go for great causes such as the Jesus Mansion and my old lady's boob job and facelift, bless her aging temple of God.

The problem with these "self-annointed-self-appointeds" is they call themselves "Christians," but they act like "olde te$ty men profit-ERR$." Christ was a liberal Jew, a "one-man insurgency," and God doesn't need any armies. Only "devils" need "Legions." Much better, simpler, and truer to follow the words and deeds of Jesus, who (you may recall) when asked how one gets to Heaven, answered with the Parable of the Good Samaritan and concluded saying, "Go do likewise." (No military ever mentioned; none needed.) And the "most important commandment of all" is still "Do unto others as you would have them do unto you." (Read George Lakoff''s MORAL POLITICS, p. 115 - "THE NEW GOLDEN RULE") And I'm no Christian. As Winston Churchill said, "I am a Christian because of the New Testament scripture. I would never be a Christian based on how Christians behave."

um.... did I say that "MUDSHARK is trying to frame Christianity as a whole by the actions of a few charlatans"?

I was actually referring to all the generalizations, ridicule, and hostility to Christianity as a whole by several people that I'm reading on this thread. but hey, they can knock themselves out, you can knock yourself out trying to defend these actions by trying to paint me on the defense as if I'm singling you out or as if I was friggin Karl Rove or a right winger or something. My entire point was that many Christians, not just ones with right wing or anti-gay sentiments are turned OFF by the left because of this very ridicule. It seems that for the people I'm referring to namely mainstream Christians, the Democratic Party is perceived as not being as big a tent as I think it is and justifiably so. Now I've stated already that the teachings of Jesus Christ pretty much reinforce OUR beliefs and ideology. Why some people insist on trying to ignore this very politically potent fact and simply attack that belief is beyond me.

I don't know how people who would ridicule people's faith look upon.. I dunoo... Southern Baptist churches that lean heavily Democratic. Useful idiots? I'm saying, we as a party and an ideology ridicule faith itself to our own detriment and simply for our own self-aggrandization I believe.

Now before someone else goes on the attack because I refuse to laugh at and reject my fellow Christians as one homogeneous group of superstitious idiots who are filled with hatred and bile an perhaps bigoted or fascist sentiment, tell me, is that any way to counter the Republican Party that uses a very easy to dispel faux Christianity to appeal to people who may be devout but not that politically attuned or savvy (or yes maybe even bigoted. Tell me people don't think only SOME groups have bigots among them?)? Or are the ones laughing their asses off at Christians simply happy to embrace their own preconceptions and bigotries (in the same manner they think "X-tians" embrace theirs). Jesus is a hero of mine. He's probably one of the biggest radicals who ever lived. JFK is another. Now i'd be just as pi**ed if someone, say George W. Bush came along and changed the name of all schools named after JFK (or MLK) in America to "X Elementary School". It'd be the height of disrespect and contempt I think. Just saying......

Ok all.. lash out.
