Former Republican Congressman and poster child for government corruption Tom Delay appeared on Hardball today to talk with Chris Matthews about the Larry Craig sex scandal. I knew this was going to be bad when Matthews introduced him as Mr. Leader. Matthews has a strange fascination with Delay and allows him an extraordinary amount of time to rehash every scandal to involve a Democrat in the past twenty years while denying the stench of hypocrisy that emanates from the Republican Party. Delay's basic argument is that Republicans deal with their bad apples while the Democrats rally behind theirs and re-elect them. Try not to laugh too loud or throw anything breakable...tear it up in the comments...

Matt Lauer also interviewed Delay on the Today show this morning. Same garbage from the mouth of Delay, except Delay seemed to get Lauer hot under the collar when Delay kept talking about the double standards of the media in that the media will go after Republican ethical lapses and ignore the Democratic ethical lapses. I especially liked the comments by Delay on the Republicans clean up their act while the Democrats reelect their criminals. Like when the Republican lead House tried to change to rules to allow the Speaker of the House to remain speaker even if under indictment. Why do they keep giving these disgraced idiots a platform?

I first thought that with the pressure to resign that Craig would do so pretty quickly but I'd bet that behind the scenes the Repugs are going to tell Craig to tough it out for at least a few more weeks as Craig's scandal is a safe one; it doesn't go anywhere else, it'll be a total nothing a year from now, and it keeps the real scandals, the ones being done by Bush/Cheney, out of the limelight.
What DeLay is best at is convincing himself that he's honest and intelligent by searching history and saying "Well they did it tooooo!" instead of EVER answering a direct question---and always with a phoney smile. He could be one of the worst, and should never be given air time--unless they are just looking for someone to provoke interest, and anger.

It's really funny how low the Repubs have fallen. They were so much better than everyone else before, but now they strive just to have Bush be almost as good as Clinton. DeLay kept saying "if he's guilty" and "if it's true", over and over, as if there were only unsubstantiated rumors about Senator Craig. Why didn't Matthew interject even once to remind DeLay and viewers that the Senator has already plead guilty. So there is no question of his guilt or innocence here, and this time no one can even blame it on a "liberal judge" or "liberal DA" like DeLay has done in his own situation.

How can Matthews let Delay on to talk about criminal republicans and not ever bring up that Delay is facing criminal charges himself? To hear Delay talking about Christian forgiveness is like driving a meat thermometer through my ear-drum.
This is absolute bullshit that NBC allows this kind of crap to be aired. There was so much misinformation and half-truths in this segment it should be embarrassing to anyone at NBC who cares about journalism.

His answer was that he really wanted to serve but the day he went down to the recruitment station they were only accepting minorities. I don't know how many times I waited for Chris to insert "you mean the way you were ousted by your own party?" and he never said it. It makes you wonder if there was an agreement up front not to go there. Under those circumstances, wouldn't it be just plain bad journalism to invite Delay on the show?

first, let me please state that I am not a Chris Matthews fan. I find much of his commentary is disjointed. Most times I feel he is too patronizing during any segments featuring one of the Bush Administrations criminals/cronies! ...BUT...and I mean a big BUT!!! His on air entanglement with ultra-criminal Tom Delay (8/30/2007) regarding the newest Republican scandal, Larry Craig, was BEAUTIFUL! I have never seen Delay squirm like that before. It was AWESOME!!!! Delay, along with the republican thugs/criminals he defends, is a piece of garbage. I can think of few others (maybe Bush/Cheney themselves) that deserves to squirm live on TV than Delay. So, kudos to you Chris!!!! (please remember the hipocrisy of it all the next time a Bush servant sits in the Delay seat!)

Matthews was given so many opportunities to mention that Tom Delay himself had been forced to leave and that he had been indicted but he never once touched it. Must've been in the groundrules.
The Republicans are people for whom corruption is a way of life and a way of doing business. There is little or nothing that really bothers them - except someone else enjoying a little sexual interlude.
They are the real inheritors of the sick Puritanism that has been part and parcel of the American psyche since those Pilgrims landed at Plymouth Rock. The detritus of their disgusting views of human nature still linger. Now we call them Republicans - exploit anyone and everyone - but keep it secret. Unless, of course, you can rob people of decent lives - like the Waltons - and amass a fortune doing it.

Tom Delay was a Terminex bug exterminator before running for office; Craig was a counter guy at Krispy Kreme, then a farmer - just regular folks, packaged and groomed to appeal to their constituents - maybe there ought to be a better way to evaluate these people at the local level - perhaps there's something to be said for the backroom screening process the old pols used to have - or maybe term limits are the answer, since 'power corrupts, and absolute power corrupts absolutely.'

I can't believe how much of a hypocrite DeLay can be. His interview on the Today show was terrible as well. All he does is make the Republicans look even less reputable and intelligent.
On Today, Matt Lauer left the interview shaking his head and laughing at Delay's persistence in trying to make this about Democrats. I found it hilarious.
Enough already! Why does any credible news agency provide a continuing forum for thoroughly repudiated and washed up political hacks like Tom DeLay to comment on anything, least of all the ethics of the GOP? The Republicans don't "remove" their problems until there are so many guns to their heads that they can't avoid it (DeLay himself is a perfect case-in-point, as is David Vitter. The fact that Larry Craig is a closet case has been known but kept under the radar for over 20 years while he has served in postions of power in Congress). And if I hear one more Republican clown go on about the "liberal media" I may hurt someone. In its misguided effort to be "fair and objective," the media has largely been so co-opted over the last ten years that it could be an arm of the GOP. Calling Chris Matthews a "liberal" is absurd based on his near total right-wing bias of recent years. It is testament to how badly and systematically the GOP has screwed up that the so-called "liberal media" has finally grown a pair and is reporting the obvious; that the GOP is a party of sickening hypocrites who don't dare reveal their human frailties while using their postions of power to hurt other people who share the same behavior. Shame on all of them; they are finally getting their comeupance (watch the coming election results) and that has NOTHING to do with a media double standard.

It seemed to me the Tweety was treating the bug man as an elder statesman in order to set him up for a series of punchlines such as "So you're saying the Democratic party embodies the Christian value of forgiveness more than the Republicans?". He gave DeLay all the rope he wanted to list "Democrat" scandals and even threw in a few of his own before pointing out that Democrats don't use sex or sexual orientation as a wedge issue and have no reason to turn on their own people for being gay or engaging in extramarital sex etc.
Also, I think you may have meant "stiffy".
