Major thanks to Scarce for catching this classic clip from The Daily Show from June, 2001. The then-Senior Political Analyst, Stephen Colbert, has a field day with a Today Show clip of Republican Senator Trent Lott, Senator Jim Jeffords, former Attorney General John Ashcroft and Idaho Republican, Larry Craig singing the song Elvira.
As Scarce put it, it's like time stood still...

They're all gay...they just haven't yet denied it!
OMG, I actually remember this segment!
Wow.
This clip actually confirms what I have felt for a long time. THe Daily Show has REALLY gone down in quality since I first started watching it.
Nowadays, Stewart just gets up there and makes silly faces and does silly voices. And quite honestly, NONE of the current correspondents comes close to the C-trifecta that was once Carrell, Colbert and Cordry (not to mention Ed Helms).
Don't get me wrong. TDS still does great individual pieces, that no one else in the "real news" media would tackle. But the overall package is now quite lazy and uninspired. Same thing, apparently, that happened to Saturday Night Live over time.
Just my humble O....
That was painful.
I hear rumors that Craig's resigning to spend more time with his "NAMBLA-Y."
Good to see reich-wingers "working for Americans".
they are
singing a different
tune now
heh...
When they sing " The Eagle Soars", are they singing about
the NAZI Germany Eagle? Is that why they're so happy?
ya well it was a different world back then. when your government failed you on that all too popular date, the world changed and now we are stuck in this alternate universe. no matter how bad it gets, how many mistakes they make, or how many of them go to jail we are still bombarded with how RIGHT they are and the needs and wishes of americans are insignificant to the battle cry of Repuglicans pocket books. but then again, it is all clintons fault, right fellas...
i wonder which one is the pitcher and which one is the catcher. JCB
Thanks for ruining my lunch ;)
TDS, brav-fucking-O
with the likes of mitt "omni 2.0" romney scrubbing past press releases and information from his website that mentioned anything about larry wide stance craig, it is great to see that although the orwellians might try to control the past they will not do it without a fight.
today's GOP: we will alter the history books in order to perpetuate our hypocrisy
Tad @ 3:
i couldnt agree more. i can barely watch stewart's constantly shifting voices and ridiculous faces anymore. ive come to believe that he is actually doing a disservice to those of us who passionately wish to see this government's descent into fascism exposed for the very real and terrifying assault on our constitution that it is. what has happened in the last 7 years is anything but funny. stewart's shtick is pacifying and dangerous in these troubled times for america.
These performances are proof that to be in government you must have no shame and a giant ego. Talent -- unnecessary.
Ya' just can't make that shit up, The world is just one tragic comedy.
Let's see who we got in the choir:
1) The racist who longs for the good ole Strom Thurmond segregation days.
2) The ChristianOfascist theocrat from Missouri who wants to put clothes on naked statues.
3) The gay bashing "family values" senator who solicits man sex in public restrooms.
4) And lastly the guy who wised up when he realized the "Big Tent" party was really a big circus tent full of racist, bigots, homophobes and Christian extremist - switched to an independent and got the hell out of there.
My bad, I didn't give proper credit for this previously stolen joke:

Now that f*ckin' song is stuck in my head! "Elvira!...Elvira!...." AUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUGGGGGGGGGGGGHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Tad @ 3:
The Entertainment Industry has been swallowed whole and digested by the Corp's also. I like John but I get a feeling he's beginning to realize he's stuck in a real bad situation. Where fair and balanced now dictates over anyone who holds a seat.
Colbert is starting to get strange also.
All these Right Wing Nuts coming on his show for a kid glove slap on the back appearance I find disturbing.
To think, Bush was in office when this was originally broadcast...
and he's still there...
What do they bill themselves as? Three felons and a fruitloop?
Timmy v @ 15:
No. The UNITED STATES is one tragic comedy, led by the clown prince of stupidity.
Y'know.... Jeffords didn't sing with the other three once he left the GOP. Look at the picture of the other three from the other day, wearing flag vests.
Follow the money, someone once said...
Jon Stewarts' and Stephen Colbert's boss is Sumner Redstone, who has a net worth of 8 billion dollars and controls a vast media empire to include CBS, MTV and Comedy Central.
Redstone owns Viacom, which today has a Market Cap of about 27 billion dollars.
Stewart and Colbert will only go so far.

ooooh I love it,
Too funny. I had rears in my eyes
I wonder who that guy "Elvira" is in the song? I mean, Elvira certainly can not be a woman especially if Elvira is around Larry Craig.
mike, chicago @ 26:
You mean you were looking under bathroom stalls again?
I saw this on the old Dennis Miller show. He said the name of this singing group was "the Reactionary Fuckheads". Miller was funny back then.
Did the Singing Senators sound like this?

ysbaddaden @ 30:
Thats pretty much what they sounded like to me. lol The singing Senators won't sing this song though because during Vietnam, this is exactly what they (Lott, Craig..etc) were and still still are:
CCR's Fortunate Son

When Ashcroft sings "When the Eagle Soars", I also want to soar, right off the planet and never return.
Has any thought that all Larry Craig was doing was trying to flag down a cop?
I wonder if all four of the Christian "Family Values" hate mongers shown here are closet homosexuals.
When are they going to start selling the Box sets of the Daily Show???
I disagree with Tad, Bridges, and others who think the Daily Show has gone downhill. IT'S A COMEDY SHOW! And I think its still funny. There's no way I would have made it this long without them. It's not Jon Stewart's responsibility to save democracy.
I do agree that Carrell, Colbert, Cordry, and Helms were awesome.
I don't fault the senators for singing. They're just doing what they like to do. But, making fun of them is fair game too. Let the Eagle Soar is going to be remembered twenty years from now, and people will say, "WTF was that?"
Giddey-up, a-giddey-up, a-giddey-up, a- WOW WOW! hee-hee-hee
Larry Craig is already lining up his next gig as a senior exec for "Freedom's Watch", producing lies for the masses. Nothing like one of Larry's whoppers for keepin it real.
yes, it is a fact that viacom owns the daily show...
and i am amazed that TDS has gotten away with as much as it has. i wonder, at times, if TDS' popularity growth in the past 5-6 years has also led to a tightening of the reins. as more people tune in, and it starts to become the 'sole news source' for some, viacom made a phone call and had the show toned down a bit. or maybe it was advertiser pressure. i certainly can only wager a guess.
but, that said, i still love TDS. its a comedy show controlled by one of the mega-media-corps, and i watch it knowing full well that it is (see, grain of salt). needless to say, any show on TV that relies on sponsors is not going to be the best venue for exposing the corporatocracy for what it is. but, again, i don't exect it to be in the first place.
and, considering the state of the world now, i need a laugh sometimes.
Old Billy @ 36:
DoodleBugs?
Medieval social agenda. Sound familiar? I think more then just Lott dabbles. Republican bible thumping serfs. Have you no self respect and pride?
Nothing's been the same since Stephen got the two of us kicked outta that Hilton.
Ah. Now we know what the satanic equivalent of a choir of angels sounds like.
ysbaddaden @ 33:
He was busted for trying to fag down a cop.
Craig should be singing "Footloose"
[...] For 3 days, I’ve been looking all over the nets for this clip… Then Scarce and Logan at Crooks & Liars answered my prayers. [...]
I heard rumors that Craig bought his own outdoor bathroom to hang out in.
dilly @ 29:
To be honest, I think Miller is playing the right wing like fiddles. I know a lot of folks may disagree, but he always said he was Libertarian, and almost overnight he is supporting them without any disagreement, even jumping on things he thought was crap just a few years ago? Miller is playing them.
Tom Delay is a homosexual. There, it is out in the open.
"MY heart's on fire."
"Your lighter's not."
ROFL!!!!
No show is perfect but The Daily Show and The Colbert Report are the best things we've got right now, it could be SO much worse, as the unlamented "1/2 hour news hour" demonstrated.
You know what I find really bad about this case. There were a few guys who were arrested several years ago for having sex in a public restroom. Their faces were splashed all over the news, and the newscasters used such phrases as "troubling" etc. It was treated as extremely bad thing. The next night, a straight couple was caught having sex in the train that goes above the state fair. Everyone at the fair, if they had looked up, would have seen them. The newscasters reported on in with smiles on their faces, and said they were caught in "compromising positions" and it was all a big joke. I heard later they were jailed for a few hours, and then the charges were dropped. The gay guys were convicted and have criminal records.
Whats wrong with this picture? Whats the difference?
Please note I am NOT saying it shouldnt be a crime.
Old Billy @ 36:
I so agree that I would not have made it this far without the Daily Show, so I am reluctant to bite the hand that feeds me. Can't go there. I actually also think Colbert is improving. (What do you mean, kid glove? I've seen some really acid interviews.)
Anyway, these Swinging Senators should NOT quit their day jobs. No wait, actually they SHOULD quit their....oh whatever. What? Never mind.
it breaks down this way at parties:
the funny people all like tds. the unfunny people don't.
That was hilarious!
"I wouldn't worry, maybe they can get someone to replace Jeffords."
"NEVER!!!!"

bridger @ 13:
And so Stewart, a comedian, should do what? Should he drop the comedy format and see how far he can take the show in the direction of angry rants, PowerPoints on Constitutional history, and Chomsky interviews?
Tad, you are an idiot!
Seems like all of them are pedophiles, gangsters and rapists...
I bet they all play with one and other when the lights go out
Geez....the Daily Show backlash. Folks, let's not eat our own, like the Repubs do. Yeah, I tend to agree, the Daily Show might not be as consistently great as it was two or three years ago, but what do you have better? A show is only as good as its personnel. And yes, Colbert, Corddry, and Carell were amazing. Ed Helms too. So the show might have "jumped the shark", it's still a pretty well-written show which does from time to time reach the transcendent. Seriously though, unless you have a better alternative, let's not eat our own like the Republicans do.
I'm not even following the critiques of TDS's progression. That one clip has only Colbert mocking the concept of a group of stodgy US Senators singing in barber shop quartet fashion. The crack about the "subliminable" message on Social Security I took to be a crack on their being Senators interjecting politics in their "rockin'" sound, not a critique on GOP anti-New Deal policies.
Is the critique here that TDS has grown too serious in the years past and therefore the comedy was lost? It seems that posters are criticizing it in the other way around. That it's somehow grown less partisan over the years.
If the latter, I can't agree. I think it's grown a lot more editorial than it once was.
I can hear it now...Larry Craig, three dead gay republicans in Florida.
Whats happening to the party of Lincoln?
