h/t Agitprop, Congressman Vitter's alleged prostitute/mistress and his wife, both named Wendy. When asked what Wendy Two would do that Wendy One would not, the blogosphere responded, "everything, pretty much, and unlike the Senator, the prostitute has a talent for telling the truth."
A former New Orleans prostitute who says she had an affair with Sen. David Vitter has passed a lie-detector test and will provide details of the four-month relationship at a press conference Tuesday, according to Hustler magazine publisher Larry Flynt.
Vitter, a first-term senator [Republican? Ya think? -eds] elected in 2004, has denied having relationships with New Orleans prostitutes. In a call-in radio show during the Senate campaign, he dismissed as "absolutely and completely untrue" that he had a relationship with [the prostitute,] Wendy Cortez.
In an e-mail, [Vitter spokesman Joel] Digrado said, "Sen. Vitter and his wife have addressed all of this very directly. The senator is focused on important Louisiana priorities like the water resources bill and the Iraq debate."
A Republican Senate aide says the Iraq "debate" is an important Louisiana priority? Don't get me started.

So Larry Flynt is a bad guy because he publishes a magazine showing adults voluntarily doing adult things yet Republicans are good people even though they are pedophiles and war mongerers. I know that everyone is different and I really try not to judge others (given that no law was broken by Mrs Vitter), but I have to wonder what is wrong with Mrs Vitter for standing by her man. Mr Vitter doesn't sound like much of a companion given his apparently callous indifference towards his marriage. I know that my girlfriend wouldn't stay with me if I committed adultery nor would I want to be involved with someone who cheated on me.

Vitter will, most likely, be gone in January. The Republicans are trying like hell to keep the lid on this until November, when Louisiana has their gubernatorial election. Former GOP Congressman, Bobby Jindal, is the early favorite for that race. If he wins we can expect Vitter to suddenly want to "spend more time with his family" and promptly "resign" once Jindal is sworn in. Jindal will then, predictably, appoint a Republican to the vacant seat.
If the Democrats knew their asses from a hole in the ground they would make an immediate and massive push for Vitter's resignation, politics be damned. If this worked and Vitter was forced to step down before the end of the year, Kathleen Blanco would appoint a Democratic senator to fill Vitter's vacant seat.
Result: The Dems would finally have a solid majority in the senate and they could finally tell Joe Lieberman to piss or get off the pot.
It's so freaking simple. I have no idea why they aren't doing this.

I'm prepared to believe terrible things about members of the GOP, but I wouldn't believe them based on a polygraph test. Flynt really needs to ditch that as any kind of credible mechanism for discerning truth as opposed to calm under pressure.
Really, it's not just the GOP's homophobic agenda that has condemned Craig but allowed Vitter to weather some discomfort and quietly put the whole episode in the past; if the news media was prepared to report same-sexcapades in the same way they report hetero-follies, and if the public wasn't so prepared to swallow the idea that same-sex liasons are worse than their heterosexual counterparts, it just wouldn't wash.
Still. It's almost always the Repugs who get caught while doing exactly what they say they abhor.

Others have said it but I'll say it too: Lie detectors are scientifically invalid. They do not measure lies, they measure stress. A confident liar can pass easily just as an insecure truth-teller can fail.
