Just goes to show you: Trust your initial instinct. All hell breaks loose when you don't.
In all seriousness, this makes the last seven years that much more of an abomination for the U.S. He KNEW this quagmire would happen. He KNEW it was untenable 15 years ago. There's a special place in hell for the neo-cons that pushed this policy over logic, military strategy and basic humanity.

This skit is from a show called Fridays which aired briefly in the early 80s...it was a relentlessly anti-Republican show, which is probably why it didn't survive long on TV. Well, I was a lot younger then and probably not as particular, but it was certainly no worse than Saturday Night Live was at times. They had a few fun sketches and as klunky as this one was, you have to admit, even though Reagan's reign is long over, there is definitely a feeling of deja vu in the air when you watch this. Besides, I wonder how those comedians feel now that rather than 'fighting the system' Americans have simply let it run over them like a steam roller!

John Kerry said that Saddam was a threat in 1997 and urged action.

Fifth of all, it committed the U.S. to providing $97 million to Iraqi exile groups who were supposed to oust Saddam, not to using U.S. military force to do so. Sixth of all, Clinton so thought that this was "his" policy that he funded it to the whopping tune of $5 million for typewriters, PCs, and copy paper. Seventh of all, Clinton specifically ordered that no ILA funds be used for weapons, weapons training, or any other tactical training. Eighth of all, it was Clinton's categorical unwillingness to fund any of the ILA or the groups associated with it -- it should have been called the "Ahmad Chalabi Vacation Home Improvement Act -- that Republicans in the House and Senate repeatedly held hearings to complain about how Clinton wouldn't fund the program. As much as I like kicking Steve's idiot ass, one thing does bear thinking about in the Cheney YouTube clip -- he was still Secretary of Defense and 92 was an election year. I'm perfectly willing to believe -- as Woodward, Ricks, and others have suggested -- that Cheney was personally unhappy with the decision not to go to Baghdad in 1991 but was here simply pitching the party line.

Because those Serious People vouched for Chalabi -- Jim Woolsey actually offered free legal services for a couple of Iraqi National Congress yahoos who got pinched by the federales in an espionage racket after we hauled their sorry butts out of Kurdistan in 1996 -- there was no need for the GOPers on the Hill who promoted the Iraq Liberation Act to look into due diligence questions.
Plus Chalabi was always very charming when they called him to testify before various House and Senate subcommittee panels on how Super Great the Iraqi exile forces were and how Motivated and Just Darned Excited the boys were to Overthrow the Tyrant -- you know, especially if you give us that $97 mill. And a little something for the effort.

Cheney joined the private sector somewhere around 1994-1995 after the Dems had taken control of the government. He worked for the American Enterprise Institute and Halliburton. When Cheney said 9/11 changed everything (as a pretext to invade Iraq now compared to the previous golf war), it's a flat out lie. He's completely changed his positions to match those of AEI and Halliburton and that took place well before 9/11.
It's interesting that while Cheney was saying this, our current prez was saying that we should invade Iraq and "take out" Saddam Hussein, not referring to dating.
So while Cheney may be a new convert to that policy, it was Bush's all along, and entirely his responsibility whether Cheney supported it or not.
That is the most damning clip I have ever seen. To think this man has been running our country using his puppet-boy George. WHY ARE THEY STILL IN POWER??? Apparently Saddam Hussein is worth is 3,792 and still counting American lives, even after he's gone and dead. Here is what I think happened. H.W. Bush listened those who analyzed the 1991 situation and acted on their advice. Cheney heard those analysis and since the president had gone along with the analysts, Cheney parroted the reason H.W. Bush did not go into Baghdad. But if I had to bet, I would bet that Cheney did not believe those analysts. Cheney must have believed it had been a mistake not to go into Baghdad. Cheney plotted to depose Saddam the minute HW lost. To his luck and to the sorrow of Americans, Cheney found the man who would listen to him. GW. has the perfect character -- tell GW how great he will be if he gets rid of Saddam and create a democracy, a seed that will bloom through the Middle East. Like a defective character in a Shakespeare drama, GW will end up in some tribunal. Cheney is too sick to have a long life. He will die and go into his nightmarish dreams:
