My God! Dick Cheney Was Right!

Of course, it was back in 1992. Hasn't happened since. Pity.

Just goes to show you: Trust your initial instinct.  All hell breaks loose when you don't.

In all seriousness, this makes the last seven years that much more of an abomination for the U.S.  He KNEW this quagmire would happen.  He KNEW it was untenable 15 years ago.  There's a special place in hell for the neo-cons that pushed this policy over logic, military strategy and basic humanity.

Nicole, you typical liberal!!!! You're taking those comments 'out of context' (Tm)!!!!

/snark

but... but.... 9/11 changed everything. After 9/11, there were no longer two world trade towers in Lower Manhattan. And as 30% of America knows; saddam personally planned 9/11.

This skit is from a show called Fridays which aired briefly in the early 80s...it was a relentlessly anti-Republican show, which is probably why it didn't survive long on TV. I think this sketch--at the dawn of Reaganism--was their most brilliant! Enjoy and pass it along! (and yes, that is 'Kramer' from Seinfeld and Larry David from 'Curb Your Enthusiasm.'

What's maddening is just like the truth about the 'war for oil', the Republicans are now just casually accepting this stuff and calling for us to move forward. They've committed unspeakable atrocities and fully expect to get away with it with no consequences whatsoever. In fact, they are flaunting this stuff.

What Cheney ain't . . . . . . .

Great video but old news...this went round the progressive blogosphere weeks ago and even made it briefly to a few MSM outlets. I do wish it would get more play so maybe this will help! Thanks...

ASSHOLE!!! ASSHOLE!!! ASSHOLE!!!!!!
I wish there was a hell, so that bastard could burn for what he's done.

"this video is a George Soros conspiracy"-every Fox anchor

cheney is an abomination.

he should be impeached knowing what he and bush have done is a LIE.

1992 or 2007, I still find listening to this man very distasteful.

I guess Soros is at fault here also but I do not watch fox noise. Typical deferrment dick comment, hypocracy at its best.

Man, this changes everything.

It probably didn't last because it wasn't a very good show. Believe me, I remember.

Nicole- Just keep diggin' up Cheney's greatest hits. What's this, two or three where he said the same thing way back when.

And he was right every time, too. Guess he changed his mind after drinkin' the Halliburton Kool Aid.

The unspoken words in parenthesis after "maybe we put him down in Miami with Noriega" (our other puppet we turned on.....)

That was before he went to work for Halliburton and realized how much money he could make off dead soldiers.

Not so fast...this is yet ANOTHER video of him saying the same thing...so it goes to show that these comments were well studied and not off the cuff, this line of reasoning was one he believed to be politically expedient for the warhawks of that time.

What is the crime for DELIBERATELY leading a nation to disaster? Treason? I think so.

Well, I was a lot younger then and probably not as particular, but it was certainly no worse than Saturday Night Live was at times. They had a few fun sketches and as klunky as this one was, you have to admit, even though Reagan's reign is long over, there is definitely a feeling of deja vu in the air when you watch this. Besides, I wonder how those comedians feel now that rather than 'fighting the system' Americans have simply let it run over them like a steam roller!

That was before he was Vice President and was in a position to steer no bid government contracts to his former company.

Check this out.

Saddam Hussein offered to step down and go into exile one month before the invasion of Iraq, it was claimed last night.

Fearing defeat, Saddam was prepared to go peacefully in return for £500million ($1billion).

The extraordinary offer was revealed yesterday in a transcript of talks in February 2003 between George Bush and the then Spanish Prime Minister Jose Maria Aznar at the President's Texas ranch.

The White House refused to comment on the report last night.

But, if verified, it is certain to raise questions in Washington and London over whether the costly four-year war could have been averted.

Why do you Democrats keep insisting on LYING and pretending that the war is "Bush's War"?

Bill Clinton said Saddam was a threat in 1998 and signed the Iraq Regime Change Act into law.

John Kerry said that Saddam was a threat in 1997 and urged action.

Check out my site for a list of what Democrats actually said and their positions on Iraq BEFORE Bush was fairly elected in 2000.

Steve: You're an idiot. First of all, it is called the Iraq Liberation Act. Second of all, it was passed by a veto-proof margin in the House and Senate. Third of all, it was written by Republicans. Fourth of all, it was moved into the House by Ben Gilman (R-NY) and in the Senate by Trent Lott (R-MS). Fifth of all, it committed the U.S. to providing $97 million to Iraqi exile groups who were supposed to oust Saddam, not to using U.S. military force to do so. Sixth of all, Clinton so thought that this was "his" policy that he funded it to the whopping tune of $5 million for typewriters, PCs, and copy paper. Seventh of all, Clinton specifically ordered that no ILA funds be used for weapons, weapons training, or any other tactical training. Eighth of all, it was Clinton's categorical unwillingness to fund any of the ILA or the groups associated with it -- it should have been called the "Ahmad Chalabi Vacation Home Improvement Act -- that Republicans in the House and Senate repeatedly held hearings to complain about how Clinton wouldn't fund the program. Stop being an idiot.

As much as I like kicking Steve's idiot ass, one thing does bear thinking about in the Cheney YouTube clip -- he was still Secretary of Defense and 92 was an election year. I'm perfectly willing to believe -- as Woodward, Ricks, and others have suggested -- that Cheney was personally unhappy with the decision not to go to Baghdad in 1991 but was here simply pitching the party line.

I would like Dick's pacemaker battery to stop functioning?. can i write that ?. or is ti too offensive....

Hemlock for Gadflies...again thank you for the detailed info.....but my comment is this...If the repugs wanted Chambli to take over back then...........hmmmmm?.......That's a long time to not do a back ground check on this guy.....ahhhhaaaa!.....more corruption from way back.

This is really creepy.

And it just shows that they knew all along (at least the smarter ones, probably not Dubya himself). They just wanted to have some war to get good ratings, make money off of it and to pummel the democrats. And it all worked out.

mudshark: one thing to bear in mind is that Serious People were IN LOVE with Chalabi in the mid-90s. And by "serious people," I mean -- of course -- Bill Kristol, Richard Perle, Paul Wolfowitz, A.M. Rosenthal of the NY Times, Jim Hoagland of the WaPo, the Wall Street Journal editorial board, and Judith Miller (who might have actually REALLY been in love with Ahmad). Because those Serious People vouched for Chalabi -- Jim Woolsey actually offered free legal services for a couple of Iraqi National Congress yahoos who got pinched by the federales in an espionage racket after we hauled their sorry butts out of Kurdistan in 1996 -- there was no need for the GOPers on the Hill who promoted the Iraq Liberation Act to look into due diligence questions.

Plus Chalabi was always very charming when they called him to testify before various House and Senate subcommittee panels on how Super Great the Iraqi exile forces were and how Motivated and Just Darned Excited the boys were to Overthrow the Tyrant -- you know, especially if you give us that $97 mill. And a little something for the effort.

Why bother, Unca Joe? You and this fella could both be immolated by a fire of his creation and he'd still take the time to point at you and scream, "Pwnage, ya filthy lib! You are on fire! HAHAHA!"

A special place in hell, indeed.

A very special place, since these blood-soaked hypocrites insist on basing their fear/warmongering in psuedo-religious terms, and 20% of the war budget flows directly to the already swollen bank accounts of the profiteering friends and family of this psychopathic scumgang.
The question remains: is our society responsible for the actions of our elected executive? If so, how do we measure our own accountability?

How can we atone for what we have allowed to happen-for we certainly did not prevent it, regardless of our attempts or intentions.
We are all stone guilty of allowing fear to rule, and the consequences for the people of Iraq are inexpressible.

The exact quote escapes me, from the Geneva Conventions on War Crimes: agressive war is the ultimate war crime, because it contains within it all the other crimes (murder, destruction, theft, rape, collective punishments, torture, etc.) This is what our nation, our government, our military, our society is engaged in today, and will wake up to tomorrow. We are responsible. Just like the "good germans".

You left one thing out Uncle Joe. When Clinton sent US troops to the Baltics the Repigs did the exact same thing that they are accusing the left of doing. You know, demoralizing the troops, attacking the Generals.

The biggest problem with the Repigs is they have a very short memory.

Don't you get it? A quagmire is exactly what these people wanted. It is called engineered chaos and it plays right into their strategy.

146 dead soldiers is "too many", by 3900 is not enough.

Glad to see another version of Cheney's comments surfacing. I'm disappointed though that this snippet from General Schwarzkopf and Robert Gates (former Deputy Nat Security Advisor, now Sec of Def) not getting more airplay:

Schwarzkopf & Gates on why we DIDN'T invade Baghdad in 91.

as Dick "Dr. Death" Cheney himself would say: "9/11 changed everything."

These morons are determined to leave the whole f***ing mess for the next president,
then they will run future campaigns blaming Democrats for the debacle/mess.

Right on. It's the Kissinger Doctrine

The slimy bastard in 2002 was a changed man. Cheney came to office owing a huge payback for all the millions that Halliburton gave him and are still giving him. Cheney does not give a rats ass about the cost in lives for our brave soldiers or cost to taxpayers with the invasion of Iraq. He just wanted profits for Halliburton and to get Saddam and his oil. Cheney is the worst VP in our history.

Just another of the many reasons to finally impeach Cheney. What are the Democrats waiting for and when will Pelosi put this basic requirement back on the table?

Erroll @ 68:

I would like to think that she wanted to suggest that Impeachment was not an
agenda item going into the majority.

That is what I heard when it was said.

Saddam was working on a deal to be exiled in other countries.

More and more is coming out about this needless genocide.

Who are you, & what have you done with Darth Cheney?!

This turns my stomach. When did he drink the Kool-Aid, and why? Better yet, why didn't we all see this 100 times prior to the 2004 election? Just wondering.

I wouldn't be surprised that 90% of the people applauding him in that room for that answer support the current occupation of Iraq.

its very simple: it was before he had such a big stake in haliburton.

Simple.

Money.

That man is so evil.

And here's the big dick in 1994. Same story.

So what your telling us that Cheney sold his soul for cash, a big house in the country and limo service for life?

This turns my stomach. When did he drink the Kool-Aid, and why? Better yet, why didn’t we all see this 100 times prior to the 2004 election? Just wondering.

Cheney joined the private sector somewhere around 1994-1995 after the Dems had taken control of the government. He worked for the American Enterprise Institute and Halliburton. When Cheney said 9/11 changed everything (as a pretext to invade Iraq now compared to the previous golf war), it's a flat out lie. He's completely changed his positions to match those of AEI and Halliburton and that took place well before 9/11.

It's interesting that while Cheney was saying this, our current prez was saying that we should invade Iraq and "take out" Saddam Hussein, not referring to dating.
So while Cheney may be a new convert to that policy, it was Bush's all along, and entirely his responsibility whether Cheney supported it or not.

That is the most damning clip I have ever seen. To think this man has been running our country using his puppet-boy George. WHY ARE THEY STILL IN POWER??? Apparently Saddam Hussein is worth is 3,792 and still counting American lives, even after he's gone and dead. I hope that special place in Hell makes them experience each and every single death of the 3,792 fallen for eternity.

"We cannot allow our soldiers to be used as tools, to terrorize innocent Iraqi civilians.
This has got to stop. This country doesn't belong to George Bush and the corporation
he makes wealthy with the blood of our sons and daughters."
~ Anita Anderson

Here is what I think happened. H.W. Bush listened those who analyzed the 1991 situation and acted on their advice. Cheney heard those analysis and since the president had gone along with the analysts, Cheney parroted the reason H.W. Bush did not go into Baghdad. But if I had to bet, I would bet that Cheney did not believe those analysts. Cheney must have believed it had been a mistake not to go into Baghdad. Cheney plotted to depose Saddam the minute HW lost. To his luck and to the sorrow of Americans, Cheney found the man who would listen to him. GW. has the perfect character -- tell GW how great he will be if he gets rid of Saddam and create a democracy, a seed that will bloom through the Middle East. Like a defective character in a Shakespeare drama, GW will end up in some tribunal. Cheney is too sick to have a long life. He will die and go into his nightmarish dreams:

To die, to sleep--
To sleep--perchance to dream: ay, there's the rub,
For in that sleep of death what dreams may come
When we have shuffled off this mortal coil..

There is no rest for the wicked.

why has it taken THIS long for this stuff to surface?

That's it. I am going to write a series of strongly worded letters to the president's lawyers.

I watch this segment and his 1994 appearance and I get madder every time I see it.

Why weren't these clips playing repeatedly on prime time news in Fall 2002-Spring 2003 when it mattered? Surely Dick Cheney's own words -- prior inconsistent statements -- were fair game to rebut the Dick Cheney that later wanted to go to war.

I've been saying it for years now, I've even emailed it to Bush at 'president @whitehouse.gov'-
I accused Bush, et al, of treason, during wartime.
If I understand that situation correctly, a conviction for that carries the death sentence. Oh, the irony.
Try them, convict them, hang them. I also mentioned that America will never regain it's moral compass until it happens. IMO.
I won't be coming to visit the US for a while,I guess.
