UPDATED: He also attacked Paul Hackett: "Limbaugh Calls Iraq Vet "Staff Puke," Claims He Volunteered For War "To Pad [His] Resume"

Rush Limbaugh's anti-troop remarks has set off a ton of responses so far. Send a message to Rush via Wesley Clark: "Is Jon Soltz a phony soldier?"

Rep. Jan Schakowsky:

Does Rush Limbaugh really want to look General Odom in the eye and call him a phony? … And while we’re at it, let’s pay attention to the 72% of american troops serving in iraq who also think the US should exit the country within the next year and more than one in four who say the troops should leave immediately according to the Zogby poll. I guess they’re all a bunch of phonies according to Rush Limbaugh.”

Howard Dean via Press release:

"Rush Limbaugh should immediately apologize to our brave men and women in uniform for undermining the sacrifices they make every day serving our country. Limbaugh's comments were un-American, have no place in the public discourse, and show just how far he'll go to defend President Bush's failed policy in Iraq. America's troops deserve better, and Limbaugh owes them an apology."

DCCC Chairman Chris Van Hollen:

Rush Limbaugh's personal attack on our men and women in uniform is reprehensible. It minimizes the sacrifice our troops in Iraq and their families are making and has no place in the public discourse. Rush Limbaugh owes our military and their families an apology for his hurtful comments that minimize their service to our country

Iraq Vet And Dem Congressman Patrick Murphy Blasts Rush

“Someone should tell chicken-hawk Rush Limbaugh that the only phonies are those who choose not to serve and then criticize those who do.

Steve Soto: ....when can we expect GOP senator John Cornyn of Texas to sponsor the resolution condemning Rush Limbaugh? You see, Omar Mora, one of the seven soldiers who wrote the New York Times op-ed opposing the war last month, and who was killed later, was Cornyn's constituent from Texas City.

I'm confused. I thought she wanted it 'off the table' because she thought it would needlessly tie up the senate and such.

Why didn't she then say anything against the whole MoveOn amendment?

slippytoad's picture

Well, on the prior Limbaugh thread some trolls appeared -- it seems that Limbaugh has spent much of his day attempting to throw chaff into the wind. I'm pre-emptively calling that garbage out right here -- Limbaugh wants us to think he's talking about non-soldiers who actually pretended to be Iraq vets in order, mostly, to gain medical benefits. That opens up a WHOLE CAN of worms right there but mostly it's a smokescreen for him to avoid the very reality that he insulted every single soldier who had the temerity to speak his mind regarding the war effort.

Those who haven't watched or listened to Limbaugh before probably are unaware that this is his tactic dejure -- he says the most outrageous, inflammatory, insulting things he can in order to discredit someone who disagrees with him, and then when he's called on it he either pretends he didn't say it (harder since his show is videotaped all day long now) or he makes shit up about what he was really saying. As someone else said of O'Really: he'd claim he was taken out of context if he got caught red-handed robbing a bank.

Don't pay the slightest attention to these trolls when they arrive. Rush was talking about this guy and these people, not about some con artist. The con artist is him. Know it. Say it. The man is a liar and a fraud.

Come on guys; you know Rush was only kidding. Can't you take a joke?

You heard the Republican Senator explain the difference between the MoveOn ad and the Swiftboaters? One was directed at an elected official who should be expecting that kind of treatment; the other was a military general just doing his job.

That being said, I would like to register my EXTREME disgust in discovering that Barnes and Noble advertises on the website of fascist (yes, I mean this in it's literal definition) propagandist Rush Limbaugh, who very recently referred to the honorable men and women currently serving in the military who do not support the Iraq war (64% by some reports)as "phony soldiers". I and innumerable others, such as the friend and family of those currently serving in the military are profoundly offended by this.......needless to say, I will be shopping at the "Borders" across the street until your corporate sponsorship is removed.....and I furthermore recommend an examination of the process which allowed your advertising to be placed there in the first place.

David Brooks knows that Limbaugh wordsmith's his wormy way out of responsibility. When I used to listen to him every day I heard him do this everyday.

See Rush had determined that Mike in Chicago was not a real solider, so in his mind he was not insulting men and women in uniform

No, it’s not, and what’s really funny is, they never talk to real soldiers. They like to pull these soldiers that come up out of the blue and talk to the media.” Limbaugh interjected, “The phony soldiers.” The caller, who had earlier said, “I am a serving American military, in the Army,” agreed, replying, “The phony soldiers.”

Oh and if you listen and tell Rush you listen to him say such and such he will say "No, I didn't. You got that off of media matters." Just like O'Reilly - so who's got a play book?

His mind numbed Dittoheads, follow him without question - even when they know he said something different the day before - they give him a pass, he's got them trained so well. I know I used to be one and listened every day for 4 years . . . . but Rush would say I'm lying.

Stifling free speech is the least of it. That vote was an opening salvo of the 2008 campaign. It was eminently successful. As of today, any republican targeted by a Move On ad will be able to point to the bipartisan censure resolution as proof that Move On is a radical, fringe organization driven by "anti-Americans"(or some such characterization). Limbaugh has provided the democrats an opening to turn the tables on the GOP with their own tactics.

And you say no, your butt makes your butt look big

Good analogy, ysby. Except in the MoveOn case the mommy party got the scolding. In the Rush case the daddy party
thinks its just your time of the month.

I think you should add that daddy likes to hit and punch mommy whenever he thinks she doesn't go along with him, disagree with him ort thinks for herself.

It's refreshing to see the "librul media" giving Rush's anti-military comments non-stop coverage like they did with the moveon.org ad.

I guess the Senate and House should draft up resolutions condemning Rush Limpballs' statement. Holy crap. Can we please end this awful war? Can we please kick out those keeping us in this awful war? Do something, Congress!

I think he was trying to compliment the troops. Let me explain. See, he LOVES himself some DUHbya. And who is the phoniest soldier in the history of America? That's right. DUHbya. So when Mush Lumpbutt calls you a phony soldier, in his drug-addled mind, he's saying something nice.

Either that or he is truly one of the biggest piles of shit in the history our great nation.

Have you seen any recent photos of Lush? My God! He's so pale and thin, yes thin -- like a rail.

I think all the ongoing oxycontin use is really taking its toll. I've seen people who looked that bad before; they only lasted a few months. I think Lush isn't long for this world. He looks like he's knocking on death's door.

This is calculated.

Rush and his pals are trying to set the terms of debate for the inevitable US withdrawal from Iraq. They're naming the (phony) culprits (liberals, anti-war Democrats, "treasonous" officers and soldiers, etc.) in advance. These will be the convenient fall guys when the Iraqi government collapses and all is lost.

Can anyone doubt that what Rush, FoxNews and the PNACers want is a "last helicopter out of Saigon" moment? They WANT everything to collapse in a horrible mess, so that they can blame the whole corrupt, dishonest war on the backstabbing, atheistic, America-hating, Liberal queer hippie socialist scumbags.

We should come right back with our own resolution condemning Limbaugh.
Those who voted against Move On will have to vote for it or expose the weakness of their position against free speech.

I'm so sick of reading and writing about these people. Let me know when you guys are ready and willing to really do something about it. Until then, I'm bailing out. No more blogs, forums or comment sections. I've seen all I need to see. Either we start a revolution and bring about the third Continental Congress NOW or we submit to the elite and what they're doing and shut up about it. We have all the evidence of what's going on and who's doing it right in front of our faces. It's time to act.

limbaugh, is the face and voice of the GOP talk radio monopoly, which has been the most influential political force in America since reagan killed the Fairness Doctrine 20 years ago. he didn’t get a 1/3BIL$ contract (with perks) for selling penile enhancement and hair growth formulas.

with help from other blowhard chickenhawks like hannity and company, the talk radio propaganda machine he dominated has determined the media flavor of America- determining what is acceptable and what isn’t, enabling massive GOP hypocricy and denial, and creating a giant bandwagon for so many of our lazy talking heads to ride on.

with their nationwide repetition of uncontested excuses, lies, exaggerations, distortions, and attacks they enabled a small extremist minority take over and now destroy the GOP. too bad they’re taking the rest of the country down too.

looks like his power is waning but he was rove’s biggest tool and still largely ignored by those he attacks the most. and the GOP talk radio monopoly is still largely responsibe for keeping the GOP from breaking ranks and giving the Dems a veto-proof majority for getting out of Iraq.

my friends ask, Anyone else know any other sponsors?
A good place to start is clear channel, and every client they advertise for....the gop knows you can't go to work, without eating a certain amount of crap....and that most don't care who sells them products they need.
They don't realize you can always shop elsewhere, even if it might be a little further out of the way.

I have HAD it with the take the high road ignore them and they will go away school of thought. Through dumbing down and spinning the issues, they MANIPULATE several million listeners (many simplistic and uneducated.....possibly prone to be otherwise apolitical) into supporting the right wing. If just a few more of these idiots had sat out the last two elections instead of having their perception of reality deceptively painted right we would be right now calmly yawning having had 6.5 years of peace and prosperity under President Gore......instead of Iraq, the dollar on the verge of collapsing,.....

Mr. Limbaugh is mistaken. Patriotism is not supporting victory, nor the president, nor the military. Patriotism is supporting and upholding the Constitution. People like him are scum bags, playing on emotions, not on logic.

[...] Several Democratic members of Congress have already denounced Limbaugh’s comments and the White House is distancing itself from him. But Rush is refusing to apologize. [...]

I agree with the one or two people here who remind us that hey, this is America! Rush, as pathetic and disgusting as he is, has his right to Freedom of Speech - like we all do. Thank goodness. This means you and I can walk around saying whatever we want about the military, generals and all, without worrying that we're going to be put away for it. All of you here at C&L are smarter than this!

Congress was wrong to condemn MoveOn. And it is wrong to try and get them to condemn Rush Limbaugh - yikes! Wake up - this is the stuff of Civics 101! The Bush administration doesn't need help tearing down our democracy.

He does deny it. He claimed he said "phony soldier" about a person who he believes was not indeed in the military. Of course, he digs himself deeper in by bringing up Murtha, but that doesn't change the fact that his comment WAS taken out-of-context. Rush is an ass. He's al liar. He's a racist. He's a chickenhawk. He's a shill for the right-wing. He's a drug-addled gasbag. He's many awful things. But this kind of reaction just fuels his ego and his idiot supporters. He did not say what he is accused of saying, and he now has (in his own embarrassing and stupid way) clarified that remark. Please, can we focus on other things? I'm sad that because I value integrity and fairness above all else, I have to end up looking like I'm defending Rush friggin' Limbaugh!

Do you also think we should just ignore the fact that the republicans voted against the MoveOn ad, and be content that we knew what they were REALLY trying to say?

Yes. It's hard to determine how low on the priority list the whole Move On issue should be. Maybe one item ahead of Larry Craig. There are many, MANY more serious things to deal with than worrying about GOP stupidity in pandering to their reactionary base. Let's deal with Rush when the troops are home and Bush and friends are in jail for war crimes.
