SNL Weekend Update: Politics As Usual

BillW. created this little mashup of Saturday Night's Weekend Update segment. The best part is the "Really?" feature on Sen. Larry Craig, but SNL classic alum Chevy Chase pops in for a guest appearance as well.

This was the BEST SNL Weekend Update I have been privy to since Dennis Miller sold his soul to make those dull, tortured, establishment blow-hard diatribes over at Fox...you know, that guy WAS funny. But then again, I don't misconstrue Lorne's pro-Hillary slant as anything necessarily GOOD for the country. From the guy who brought us "Conspiracy House Rock"...more conspiracy. Well done. Bravo.

Petraeus steps up accusations against Iran 1:54pm EDT
EAST OF BAQUBA, Iraq (Reuters) - The U.S. military commander in Iraq stepped up accusations over the weekend that Iran was inciting violence there and said Tehran's ambassador to Baghdad was a member of the Revolutionary Guards Qods force.

The ramp up of anti-Iran propaganda has begun. Look for a strike on Iran by either Israel or the US NAvy in a couple of weeks.- F***!

US and Israeli hawks don't like to hear this, but in both Bosnia-Herzegovina during the early and mid-1990s and more recently in Afghanistan after September 11, 2001, the US military and the Quds Force interacted positively. In Bosnia, invited by the Bosnian government under siege, the Quds trained and armed Bosnian fighters, with the tacit blessing of the White House. They continued to provide humanitarian support even after their military role ended shortly after the signing of the Dayton Peace Agreement, which called for the exit of foreign forces.

Similarly, in Afghanistan, where the Quds played a prominent role in supporting the anti-Taliban and anti-al-Qaeda Northern Alliance led by the late Ahmad Shah Masoud long before the US cavalry arrived in 2001, US and Quds commanders met repeatedly both before and after Kabul's fall into the hands of the Northern Alliance.

General Betrayus afterall.

Do people think that Chevy Chase was funny this week?
I thought he seemed rather rambling and very UNfunny.

The "Really?" skit was the best thing they did.

There was a time when SNL actually did political satire.
Now, they think it's just funny to dress people up as
politicians and mock their hair, they way they speak, etc.

The Muppet/Rolf/Swedish Chef thing was BRUTAL. TERRIBLE.

The Daily Show and Colbert tell great jokes EVERY NIGHT.
SNL can't string together a few funny skits once a WEEK.

I thought this was really sad. SNL used to be something something I looked forward to watching every week. From the beginning - I guess that dates me too. But this stuff is really cringeworthy. Cheby Chase was an embarrassment. He's lost it. Stewart and Colbert are so consistently funny, clever and politically insightful that it makes you wonder why SNL even bothers. I can't see it lasting much longer.

Jonathan's picture

It was pretty decent, and preferable to SNL nowadays. At least I laughed.

Wow was that really Chevy Chase? It looked like Dick Cheney doing his Chevy Chase impression. Yikes!

TTFD's picture

the 'Really?!?!' sketch had me laughing that was well done, Chevy was chucklingly funny, but all of it together was quite enjoyable.

I do agree thought that Colbert/Stewart are 'on' almost every night.

Moose's picture

Seth and Amy doing that "Really?" bit absolutely killed!
The one they did last year on Mike Vick being busted for weed in an airport was hilarious too.

Chevy was mildly amusing like any senile octogenarian would be.

fiver's picture

Have to agree that Stewart/Colbert are funnier, more consistently. But without Chevy and Weekend Update, there wouldn't be a Daily Show.

Great clip. Thanks.

Brian's picture

Chevy was bombing and seemed to be blaming the material as he delivered it. Was it my imagination or did both Seth and Amy look pissed when Chevy had finished?

joshdavis's picture

I really wish they would get back to doing REAL political satire. Even if they were just ridiculing Democrats, I would at least enjoy it. I used to love the skits they did mocking Clinton back in the late 90s. People stopped watching SNL because it stopped being smart a long time ago. Believe it or not, there is actual truth in good comedy.

shantiquax's picture

I'll never forget one of the schticks Chevy Chase did back in the day. He held up a bumper sticker that said "Reagan for President. Think about it." Everyone roared with laughter. And then the world of Democrats and Republicans changed forever, and the seeds of a strange brand of Christianity called compassionate conservatism was spread through-out the land. Pickles and ketchup became vegetables, and trees became redundant. And paying for the infrastructure that just about every American uses every day of his/her life? Oh, ho-ho, hee-hee, don't get me started!

Chevy Chase sucks ,,,all the air out of the room, and all the humor from a skit

Somebody put a fork in Chevy Chase, he's DONE.

crescentdave's picture

It's just not funny anymore ... maybe in a more naive time. The "Really" segment was the funniest, because it actually had some teeth to it. These elected pigs aren't funny. They drive us into bankruptcy, threaten our safety, practice the cynical politics of divisiveness, sowing seeds of fear while gorging themselves at taxpayers' expense. They never met a lobbyist they didn't like, never practice what they preach and mistake lying for strategy and bullying for leadership.

Actually Chevy said "Let's take a closer, more in dept look at the republican's candidate wont we?" *pause* "Okay then!"

I think Chevy took at a shot at every candidates from both side, plus this mysterious disappearing act for Dennis Kucinich in the media. I think he nailed it all on each of the candidate's personal political truth.

No, actually it was a product that Pillsbury, I think, put out in the 70s or 80s. It was a dough that you would wrap around hot dogs then put them in the oven and bake. I used to live on those things when I was a kid.

Two observations:
- The funniest line was botched: Bush's War on Science is likely to produce more scientists.
- Chevy Chase sounded like Sylvester the Cat from the WB cartoons. Shouldn't he be able to afford better fitting dentures?

donviti's picture

Chevy Chase was horrible. Not funny, the guy needs to stick to Vacation movies.

Albatross's picture

I suspect that those of you who weren't there for Season One of Saturday Night Live will have found Chevy less amusing than did us old codgers.

Chevy's hesitant, vaguely uncertain, and understated delivery was part of his comedic delivery then, but if you're unfamiliar with it you might believe he was actually low-energy and inattentive.

My motto is "Comedy is dangerous," and Chevy's certainly is - he pitches underhand and it does take some getting used to.

Chevy also has his over-the-top and pratfall side, but when delivering the fake news he frequently employs that hesitant, lowball style.

Regarding Seth Myers, it WAS a pity he blew the "create more scientists" line, but that's why it's live comedy. You can always watch MadTV if you want something taped and edited.

And "Really!??!!" was certainly the best bit. I hope they'll do one on Invading Iran...

"So Mister President, after you invaded Iraq to find nonexistent WMDs, you call us unAmerican if we don't believe you about Iran? Really?"

BTW the only two people left from the original SNL are, I think, Lorne Michaels... and Don Pardo! Go Don!

dswift's picture

SNL has only one skit left in them, after which they can call it quits:

SCENE: Bustling, tense back room where young comedians are auditioning for a spot with the SNL cast.

LORNE: Okay, let's hear your stuff.

YOUNG HOPEFUL COMEDIAN: [lengthy rambling story involving drinking, bestiality and using the word "coccyx" several times ] . . . and I woke up all covered in . . . poop!

YOUNG HOPEFUL COMEDIAN GAZES AROUND ROOM WITH PROUD, WEIRDLY BUSHIAN SMIRK FOR 45 SECONDS UNTIL SOMEONE FINALLY LAUGHS OUT OF EMBARRASSMENT.

LORNE: Good. Try to stare at the prompter more. Next?

Repeat seven times, with the final bit adding wacky "gayness" wrinkle. Blackout.

Renholder's picture

Albatross hit it on the head. I doubt many of you who said Chevy sucked really ever saw him prior to the National Lampoons movies. Chevy basically created SNL, so if you ever reminisce about the old days of SNL you really should be thanking Chevy. Lorne basically put his faith in him and let him run with it. He was writing and directing behind the scenes at SNL before he became a cast star.

He became so friggin popular at SNL the movie execs pretty much ripped him off TV and sent him to do movies. Keep in mind today's audiences are quite retarded compared to those of old. SNL has really dumbed down it's content to boot, I would say it really has a lot to do with NBC rather than Lorne or the writers at SNL. If you think about it, the witty political commentary and satire went out the door about the same time NBC and other networks started pressuring the hell out of their employees not to report or comment on certain things. Although one could make an argument that the level of real bite to the comedy has been in steep decline since the early 80s.

P.S. New SNL DOES pretty much suck, thanks for pulling out the remotely funny stuff so I don't have to watch all the rehashed boring joke garbage hey keep trying to make popular.

P.P.S. Well, I actually really like Andy Samberg and the Lonely Island guys digital shorts, so I guess not ALL of it sucks.
