The Daily Show: Target Iraq!
By Logan Murphy Friday Oct 12, 2007 11:15am
Howie Kurtz has been making the rounds peddling his new book and during an appearance on ABC's Good Morning America he makes this bold statement about the network news; I believe that these news casts in 2005 and 2006 played the biggest single roll in helping to turn public opinion against the war. Oh reeeally? Jon Stewart points out that the network news had a lil' something to do with driving public support FOR the invasion of Iraq.

Stewart runs through a list of grandiose teasers, graphics and headlines the networks used in 2002 and 2003 to hype the impending invasion of Iraq, including a graphic used by NBC showing a nuclear explosion morphing into their mascot:
Stewart: "If you're going to s*it into your pants, we'd like you to do it to this sound -- ding ding ding!"

Finally! Good morning C & L!
2nd!
This was awesome. I think I saw some sun terrorist on the beach yesterday.
whos your daddy?
The best part of this clip is there is no Kurtz. No one needs to see his shilling for the media and the repuglic**ts. That was a great smackdown of Kurtz, too.

See how easy it was to refute Howie's fatuous and, how to say this, untruthful comment? Sad that a "comedy" show has to do it.
It's really hard to believe that anyone actually buys his books, or his hype when selling a book. Remember his book "Spin Cycle" Inside the Clinton Propaganda Machine. While he was promoting that book he completely ignored the Republican Spin Machine when it was in fully swing trying to Impeach Clinton. Somehow Howard Kurtz's books always seem slanted to benefit Republican's. It could be because his wife Sheri Annis is a Republican consultant and activist.
"Now that there is funny......I don't care who you are"
Carmikl @ 7:
Not only that, but six months ago his new BFF was Malkin herself. Howie was kissing her ass big time. Haven't Joe Klein or Howie Kurtz ever heard of Teh Google? Teh Google shows them to be the liars they are.
This Orwellian black is white, up is down propaganda seems officially out of control now.
How strange. A comedy show is necessary to point out in an indeed funny manner, how we live in a society controlled by corporations who use their pervasive media control to sell mass murder. Successfully. Repeatedly.
And all we can do is laugh uncomfortably and helplessly.
The media is also to blame for refusing to show BUSHFELD: THE SITCOM ABOUT NOTHING (EXCEPT DESTROYING THE PLANET)
Hitler only had radio and newspapers to manipulate and voice his propaganda. He would have killed to have something like Fox that way it pushes Bush's talking points about Iraq and now Iran. Bush now has zero credibility about any war, yet Fox continues to be a mouthpiece for a madman.
What did he say...?
...Fox News, who had apparently taken the war and the over
huh?
The bit about bombing Finland was pure satire, I know, but the lunatic fringe just might take it seriously.
The following was posted on Blogs for Bush not too long ago on a thread called:- The Deficit: Declining Toward a 2012 Surplus

At this point a "Canadian invasion" scenario is starting to look pretty good.

Invade Canada? Would they even know it if we did?

I'm hoping these remarks were said 'tongue in cheek', but with these Bush supporters, you never know.
"Role", dammit! ROLE
:P
Josh Atkins @ 14:
They had weekly cinema newsreels, which were part tabloid newsey and part propaganda.
ferrofluid @ 18:
Well, as the clip shows, it's not just Fixed Noise, it's CNN (domestic channel), ABC, MSNBC, NBC and CBS.
Craig @ 12:
If you ever get the chance to to watch the six part British TV comdey series "Whoops Apocalypse" from the early 80s do so.
It will blow your mind, it was aimed at Reagan Breshnev era cold war politics, but is so relevant today, nothing changes.
Thanks, Jon Stewart. You've done it again, said with humor what cannot otherwise be expressed as succinctly.
The MSM/Commercial Media was drooling in the eagerness to hype war with Iraq. They've learned nothing and are doing it again, pimping for war against Iran. Any wonder ,when the parent corporations derive such great benefit from the PNAC's War Without End, Amen©®™ ? I thought not. Howie Kurtz insults anything with a functioning brain stem when he claims that the press was pivotal in turning public opinion against the war.
Fraking awesome clip. And the one about Iran at the end is the perfect tag.
Howie Kurtz is a problem. He must be addressed the same way as Malkin and Coulter at this point.
We have more than enough nuclear weapons to take out all of our potential enemys. What the hell are we waiting for? It's hard to enjoy the bounty that God has given us with all these non-Christian countries bothering us.
Howie Kurtz has beltway syndrome
Shows how liberal the media actually is.
The media could not possibly turn the country against the Iraq War if they wanted to. The Bush Administration has such a clampdown on what we are allowed to see and hear. Remember when the tv reporters were "in bed," er, "embedded," with the troops? If you watch Ken Burns' film "The War," or news footage from other wars such as Vietnam, you see something you never see now -- the effects of the bullets and the bombs on actual soldiers and civilians on the ground. You see people shot or blown up by bombs, or the aftereffects. We do not see any of that now. The Iraq War is sterile. We're no longer even supposed to see the burned-out shell of a car that was bombed because the "Iraqi government" no longer permits it. And we're not permitted to see flag-draped caskets of our troops being delivered at Dover AFB in Delaware. The brutal realities of the Iraq War are being withheld from all of us as if we were children, precisely so that the media cannot have a hand in shaping our opinion against the war.
After showing Kurtz straight-faced saying: "I believe these(?) news casts in 2005 and 2006 played the biggest single role in helping to turn public opinion against the war." Followed by all the network teasers for the war (which I think were all blatant rip-offs of That's Armageddon). I was wondering how the interview with Howie went.
Mike @ 15:
I think its "in the over", a reference to "over/under" wagers---the implication being that FOX had placed a bet on going to war with Iraq.
It was brilliant of Stewart & Co. to destroy Kurtz' arguments before the shill even showed his miserable face on camera. Kurtz's main tactic is to argue that journalists are undermining Dear Leader's glorious war by overreporting bad news from Iraq (i.e., reality) and underreporting the so-called "good news" (i.e., bushco fantasies). Every week, Kurtz has reporters on his crappy gabfest to grill them about what he alleges is their biased reporting on the failures of bush's war effort. One would think that real journalists would grow tired of having their professionalism questioned by such an unprincipled hack. Now he's written a book full of the same sort of pap, and he obviously expected Stewart to agree with his inane assertions.
Kurtz, like most conservative shills, has a running war against reality's well-known liberal bias. Stewart did a public service by showing his contentions about network war coverage to be lies.
Brilliant piece.
Our media is making America scared and stupid.
A very informative piece.
Teh Horror!
The UNIVERSE - is it too BIG? What is it planning? To expand or contract? It holds EVERYTHING we hate and fear! Iraq... Iran... Planet-killing asteroids... Black Holes.... Hello Kitty...

OMG! Seriously... TDL ... ROFLMAO! Which side is the moon on? TDL is great! And I think people are starting to realize the media is completely full of sh*t!
I hate to tell old Howie but Cindy Sheehan was responsible for turning the public against the war. When she stayed outside Bush's ranch in Texas to find out what was the honorable reason for which her son died. Americans always follow the polls; never step out on their own to express a dissenting opinion. It was Cindy who can forth and questioned and it was the MSM that tried to refused to report about her activities. But, when forced to do so she was classified as a "nut case."
It's pretty obvious to me that is REAL strange that a comedy show points lies and exaggerations and if you don't realize that the Military industrial complex & CFR & THE WhITE HOUSE has a HUGE , HUGE advantage over getting their message out daily, you better put on A CLOWN SUIT AND KISS YOUR ASS GOODBYE .
Joe Klein's conscience @ 10:
When he was promoting that book, no one would challenge him. Only Bill Press on crossfire mentioned the Republican Spin Machine. I think I e-mailed just about every CNN program he appeared on at the time complaining and pointing out the flagrant Republican spin they were ignoring, but because he was their guy, they never challenged him.
Ali G @ 19:
Hitler also had the Nuremburg rallies, where tens of thousands attended. Book burnings, the Hitler Youth, military parades, flags and insignia (kinda like the USA-- actually most of this list is, but, to continue), nostalgia/German psyche, and the shame of the Treaty of Versailles which tore at the hearts of every German. He had it pretty well sewn up without TV. Granted, he would have loved TV too. (Actually the USA is employing all of this now, isn't it? The books aren't actually being burned, yet, but they may as well be.)
CNN International isn't much better (what I watch overseas), but I'm quite certain it hasn't sunk the the same depths as CNN domestic. American news is, and always has been, a joke in Canada. I can't remember a time we haven't derided it for its trashiness and sensationalism. Growing up on the border, we only watched US news for a laugh. Kind of "Oh my god" moments. Canadian news is not exciting, but I remember it being real, at least.)
Remember his book “Spin Cycle” Inside the Clinton Propaganda Machine.
NO! I don't even know this guy, but with a title like that, I'm sure I'd never even pick it up, even out of simple curiousity. I'd be embarrassed to be seen to be looking at it even.
Correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't think that comedy central put this video up on their website... Here's the link so you can check for yourselves:

And I don't like how they edited the end of the HK interview!
Is it just me, or have Jon Stewart and Stephen Colbert become a little darker of late?
Their humor seems to have a more of a bite to it these days.
Maybe it's just me.
Oh reeeally? Jon Stewart points out that the network news had a lil’ something to do with driving public support FOR the invasion of Iraq.
YA RLY!
The media indeed did begin a campaign after the war started and subsequently no WMD's were in sight. After the invasion was a different tune by the press than the time prior. I'm not saying we have a "liberal media." I'm just stating a fact.

Gallows humor?
Josh Atkins @ 14:
Josh, can you do me a favor and google up "Triumph of the Will"?
Please tell me what you find promptly.
Now THAT was brilliant.
Which got me thinking. I think it was a terrorist that cut me off the other day at The Home Depot. And I am almost certain it was a jihadist that beat me to that jumbo sized jar of peanut butter a Sam's Club.
Good God! I have never laughed this hard at anything posted here from TDS.
"Prepare to
DIE!"
The image of Magneto (Ian McKellen from X-MEN) in the Target: Finland spot was what started my gut-busting.
I think I'll go change my urine-drenched drawers now.
I work in the media doing voice-overs and acting and it's always hilarious seeing such well done satire of that same industry.
[...] Logan Murphy over at Crooks and Liars highlights Jon Stewart on the Daily Show doing a masterful job of showing some of the ways we were manipulated to support the war in Iraq. The masterful part comes at the end where the Daily Show shows us again what we are being fed to prepare us for Iran. BOHECA . Yes sir BOHECA. Bend over here it comes again. [...]
required reading to uncerstand the run up to the Iraq war.
How can something like this be funny and entertaining and still scare me shitless?. Oh I know, because JS wasn't really joking, was he?
