If he knew anything about the history of Halloween, trick or treating wasn't based on treats for fun it was based on "Prayer". Yep, going door to door to ask for "Prayer Cakes" to pray for the souls of loved ones. The more prayer cakes you gathered the more prayers you could make.

The whole Halloween holiday was pretty much based on the celebration of the Celtic New Year's eve which was celebrated on October 31 after the summer harvest. It was considered to be the start of the dark part of the year when human death was more prevalent as it started to get colder and darker. So people either prayed for the souls of the dead or hid from their spirits with costumes and masks made from animal skins. The trick or treating thing started from folks gathering prayer cakes. Irish immigrants brought the tradition here to the US.

That's how it all began.

Halloween is definately a conservatine celebration now. To participate your child must have a store bought costume of the latest fad or fashion and a lead tainted pumpkin to carry all that store bought sugar laden candy in.

The day after Halloween is a better starting point from which to track sales until Christmas since the number of days from Halloween until Christmas is always the same while the time between the day after Thanksgiving varies from year to year. From an accounting standpoint, comparing sales from year to year would be more informative if Halloween is the starting point.

Most public schools are designed to teach girls and caters to a learning style of reading and rote repetition and discussion. Many boys cannot sit still for the lengths of time required, or learn in best by other modalities. Teachers and parents ask or are asked to find a medical answer to ensure that many boys are more compliant and Ritalin is too often the answer. That being said, true ADHD does exist and Ritalin or other stimulants are very useful in getting under-stimulated brains into action.

I speak from personal experience: I was one of those kids put on and then taken off of Ritalin, and who had to struggle through a long painful school career. I am now the father of a daughter diagnosed with ADHD and I cannot tell you that when the diagnosis is correct and the medication dose is appropriate, the benefits far outweigh the negatives in her life and the lives of we who have to teach her. I've taken Ritalin or similar medications a number of times over the years and my life on and off are markedly different.

Yes there is a great deal of marketing by big-pharma to get people who do not necessarily need it to become consumers of their product. Eating Halloween candy doesn't give you ADHD. It is a huge infusion of energy that isn't great for anyone habitually, but letting kids be kids once a year ain't gonna harm anyone.
