John Edwards at the Global Warming Debate
By Nicole Belle Saturday Nov 17, 2007 12:01pmThere was a Presidential Forum on Global Warming and America's Energy Future hosted by Grist and Living on Earth yesterday. The Democratic contenders--absent Barack Obama--gathered to talk about their commitment to America's energy future.
Here is John Edwards' opening statement: (h/t Heather)
I think that John Edwards somewhat gets it, but it's something I'd like to see all candidates take a much stronger position on...we have an opportunity to be at the forefront of R&D to come up with green technology. Think of the industry and jobs that could be added to the American economy.
Co-sponsor Grist gives you interviews and information on all the candidates' stances on global warming and our energy future.

frist !
and why is hillary the front-runner?
He gets it now that Joe Trippi is running his campaign and he wants to be the new Howard Dean (he'll never be as genuine). He has a new vision every campaign he runs and I guess his pumped up Joe Trippi talking points fits him this week.
I wonder how much "less" he would "get" it if he was still a NC Senator running for re-election? He'd probably go back to his position against Universal Healthcare he held just a few years ago. he was hardly a Progressive then.
This guy is just out for himself. I'm glad the actual Democratic voters see through his reincarnations.
Sounds like you're describing the Hemp industry. Oh yeah, our governments been fighting a war against that for 70 years now.
So far, I've only heard Kucinich speak out against the War on Drugs and the Prohibition of Hemp cultivation. Go Dennis!
www.thehia.org for the Hemp Industries Association
Because people see through Edward's 'new position for every campaign" bravado.
And his nasty campaigning hasn't helped either...
Green won't take off until the Old School Industrialists retire or die off. Being they are insisting on working well into their 90's these days it may be a while before there is even a hint of progress in new technologies replacing the oil and hydro carbon era.
Basically they are holding us hostage to oil and hydro carbon.
John Edwards is great and has been my pick from the start. He's for a real change in Washington.
But Hillary is a smart, cold, calculating, corrupt and nasty political force. She seems to have smartened up to the fact those of the far left hate her guts and that could cost her the general election. That is why her and that war room team have taken on the strategy of attacking Edwards' lack of liberal principles in 2004. It's a hallow argument because like Gore he went from being a tool to being a force for change. She went from being a force of change to being a right wing tool.
Edwards ripped it up on Face the Nation this morning
Former Senator Edwards spoke truth to power once again this morning on Face the Nation. He made it clear that he had made mistakes ( a territory unknown to Hillary) and that he had learned from his 2002 war resolution vote. He brought up how HRC's yes vote for the Kyl Lieberman amendment is a very serious indication that Hillary has not learned that the Bush administration will use every measure to move their agenda for more aggressive measures to be used on Iran forward. Hillary's yes vote for the Kyl Lieberman admendment is a very clear indication of the influence that Aipac has with Hillary and that she did not learn any lessons from her yes vote on the 2002 war resolution.
On Face the Nation Edwards repeated that "intense diplomacy" with Iran and Syria and increased efforts to include all countries in the middle east is the way to move forward with negotiations with Iran.
I had no idea that John Edwards has not taken any "Pac" monies. Edwards shared that it is almost impossible to move forward in a campaign with out lobbyist money that he would like to witness lobby money taken out of the process. That corporations of course can continue to lobby but not buy a disproportionate amount of influence with their $$$$.
You know if Senator Clinton and Senator John Edwards lined up closely on all issues I would have to go with Hillary on the woman factor, but they do not. There are distinct and very serious differences on their stances on U.S. foreign policy. Edwards supports strong diplomatic means and Hillary has all ready given the Bush administration the ammunition they need to stir up more support for a first strike on Iran. Edwards learned from his 2002 war resolution vote and clearly Hillary has not. This difference is HUGE.
The MSM had been ignoring Edwards the last several months up until recently. Kept wondering why? Spread the word about Edwards in the blogosphere. Link Edwards interview on Face the Nation. (not up yet)
The Clinton crowd's booing was obnoxious. Anyone notice how Edwqrds was placed on the far right of the stage. (how are those spots chosen?) Anyone notice how Blitzer interrupted Edwards more than anyone else?

People need to educate people on the cultivation and uses of industrial hemp, and clarify that it is not its psychoactive cousin Cannabis.

"Nasty"?...I thought NYC kids were supposed to be tough. Go figure. Since when is questioning someones voting record "nasty"? Jeez.
(You think that's nasty wait till the Hillary circus comes to town...IF she gets the nod....Better buck up. As my friend Vito once told me..."Grow some balz."
NYCKid @ 12:
Easy now. "Unhinged"??? That's pure right wing nutbag speak.
I really want Edwards to beat out Clinton, if Kucinich, Dodd, or Biden can't.
On Face the Nation, Schieffer's fondness for corporate spin was out-of-control with the whole "mud-slinging" fantasy. Big bad Edwards slung "mud" at the precious flower known as Hillary? Bullcrap!
Edwards rightly focused on Clinton's voting record and stand on issues. Clinton had a well-rehearsed, well-timed "mud slinging" reaction, and resorted to squealing like a little girl, pretending she was being attacked. Cry mental rape next time, Hillary: that's an attention-getter, too.
We are in trouble if, as planned, Clinton gets the nomination.
She's so popular, such a "front runner", and like I've said before: I KNOW OF NOBODY who would vote for her.
L.A. Confidential @ 11:
Then of course when WW2 ended they needed another war so a War on Hemp was eventually declared.
The right will eviscerate Edward's and Obama. I can just see the ads they will use to define them. Edward's and Obama can't even beat down Hillary effectively, and you think they have what it takes to go up against the right-wing machine?
We saw how much damage haircut-gate did to Edward's from the right. That was just a tasting. He'd be tore to shreds.
Kathleen @ 10:
"The Polls" are rigged don't ya think? Guiliani is ahead in "The Polls" and touted as America's Mayor but when he shows up at Yankee stadium he is booed by the crowd.
Hillmart (among others) probably committed a felony when she attended the Bilderberg Group (wiki) meeting which is strictly prohibited by the Logan Act (wiki).

There have been many ruthless female rulers, eg Golda Meir, Indira Gandhi, Benazir Bhutto, Corazon Aquino, and that broad Margaret Thatcher. Either you don't know your history, or you think that possessing a vagina should take precedence over one's policies.
What woman factor could you possibly be talking about?
Malkin doesn't own the word.
And the Edward's campaign has been using right-wing MUD for the past three weeks, where's that outrage?
I call it as I see it. And the vile desperation has reached unhinged levels.
Thanks for proving my point about "unhinged" conspiarcy lunacy.
Desperation breeds this stuff.
NYCKid @ 21:
John Edward is a Bilderberg Group attendee . . . before you poo poo this . . . do a little research. This one of the big global rich person's organization. The neocons are heavily represented.

Sure. It's simple. All you need to do is associate hemp with drugs and it's off to the races.
It's like associating liberals with godless hedonism. Then you got your War on Christmas propaganda.

Thanks for pointing out with that great doc., how Prohibition is relatively recent, and an offshoot of the MIC.
We have 70 years to make up, but we're catching up fast. Hemp/Cannabis Prohibition truly is the gateway issue, and an already viable source of new/old green technologies and jobs.
NYCKid @ 21:
Gee he raised his voice he is telling the truth. He is pointing out HRC's yes vote on the Kyl Lieberman amendment (Hillary lost me there), Edwards is stating the obvious this government is corrupt and broken. This is "vile desperation" I would say you are full of horseshit.
Edwards is telling the truth, the question is will people listen?
This year, apparently, BP boss John Browne, US senator John Edwards and Mrs Bill Gates are among the invitees. People who have been in the past include the likes of Henry Kissinger (a regular), Prince Charles, Bill Clinton, Donald Rumsfeld, Peter Mandelson, Kenneth Clarke, King Juan Carlos and Lord Black (although reportedly he's now off the guest list after his Telegraph travails)
- London Guardian
NYCKid, have you checked this video of Edwards responding to questions regarding Israels nukes?
http://www.alternet.org/blogs/video/48600/
Why is it so hard for politicians to give a straight answer?
John Edwards for President.. Get on the bus
http://johnedwards.com/
Don't get all happy about job creation there skippy, they -may- design it here (more likely in their new R&D labs in China) but the equipment WILL be made offshore in Mexico, Singapore or Taiwan.
Count on it.
The corporations running things here have no intention of rebuilding the US economy, we haven't got to the point that we will accept $3.75 a day for our labor yet.
Avid Reader @ 29:
Do you read you own crap??? "Bill Clinton"..."Mrs. Bill Gates".
Oh My God. Its the Bavarian Illuminati!!!!!
Better try harder here, Pal.
equilibrio @ 30:
NOw if those same reporters would ask all of the candidates that same quesition that would be fair. You know why they can't be straight with this question. The Israeli Lobby would take them out and thats a fact.
let's just hope that those reporters hammer all of the candidates with those important questions. wonder why Edwards is the only candidate that I have heard reporters ask that question. And Edwards has not taken PAC money.
Wonder who is after taking Edwards out.
I think Edwards is a decent guy, but again, he's not an agent of change. Of course I'm open to voting for him whereas I could never vote for Hillarymart. He needs to explain his association with the Bilderberg group. He also hob knobs at the CFR.
Conpiracies don't care if you believe in them and conspiracy is one of the most prosecuted crimes in the United States.

On global warming, Edwards has the policies. Back him - or tell Obama and Clinton to seriously get their act together, or America is not going to move on this issue as much as it needs to, and the world needs it to.
Then you'll just have to convince the Chinese to stop using a godzillion tons of coal every year.
I walk the walk when it comes to energy. I don't have a car, have a small energy efficient living space and my kids even walk to school.
So that being said, in my opinion its too late to stop the bus from going over the cliff. Math beats hope everytime.
Don't get me wrong, we all need to do our best for our kids.
Peace!
NYCKid @ 3:
Let me guess - you're a Ron Paul supporter aren't you?
"we have an opportunity to be at the forefront of R&D to come up with green technology. Think of the industry and jobs that could be added to the American economy."
This is critical - I can't understand why it isn't forefront in the discussion of global warming and it's attendant issues.
The dems slate of candidates is nearly as pathetic as the repigs.
*
With the two TRILLION dollars we've spent (to date) in Iraq and Afghanistan we could have cured America of it's dependence on other nations' oil and still had some left over to fix the global warming situation.
But alas, the only two things Cons are willing to spend taxes on are killing and imprisoning people.
Johnny2Bad @ 26:
Don't forget the lesbian accusations. Trust me, if Hillary gets the nomination, the right will really be energized and ready to attack. She doesn't have a chance in hell.
You write :"Think of the industry and jobs that could be added to the American economy." But there are no gazillion-dollar lobbying efforts yet for the industry you imagine. There ARE, however, gazillion-dollar lobbying efforts for the oil, gas, and coal industry. Until their lobbying money dries up, the other industry with its jobs that you imagine being added to the Anerican economy are just a fantasy.
Legislative bribery MUST be made illegal, as in NO MONEY CHANGING HANDS AND BEING OFFERED UP TO ANY LEGISLATORS FOR ANY REASON. Only when this happens will the people's will be relevant in our country.
No that's the job of lunatics like Andrew Sullivan. Hate Ron Paul.
Hillary baby...unless I can be persuaded otherwise. And I think I've seen enough so far to know there would be no way I could support John Edward's "I have a new platfrom for every campaign I run" and his vile right-wing mud nastiness and Obama's inexperience that becomes painfully evident with each debate and press release.
Why is H.Clinton the front runner? Here is why she is the front runner it is because the CORP:., MAIN STREAM MEDIA said so. So come HE-- or high water that who it will be. I will be willing to be she will be the WINNER.
Hillary's first job in the govt happened in 2000. Senator Clinton's time as first lady of the US and AR is not govt experience, unless you're padding a resume or selling BS.
Its takes a village!
Kucinich had the best showing at the Grist debate. He received the most sustained applause. Put some video of him up.
LOL @ NYC Kid, "Malkin doesn’t own the word." He's taking the word back!
NYCKid @ 45:
Blah blah blah. New material...Please
One of the quickest, and overall one of the most important, changes that can be made to combat global warming is to stop supporting factory farming. Livestock accounts for more worldwide global warming emissions than the entire transportation sector - and does so even if Al Gore, John Edwards et al decline to mention it.

Hmmm. Better corral 'AvidReader' and 'NYCKid'...They're spreading all kinds of methane producing material.
Edwards once to focus on diplomacy with Iran, Hillary signed on the with the "neo-cons" once again with her yes vote on the Kyl Lieberman amendment. Hillary's "I wish I would have known then what I know now moment" on Iran. When will she ever learn?
blackjack @ 46:
Exactly all they talk about is HILLary Hillary. Christ she came out of the gates on the MSM's horse. That says a great deal.
I am so bloody sick of Chris Matthews and others telling us who is winning instead of getting specifics on their stances.
Avid Reader @ 37:
Here's a fashion tip for ya. It blocks those nasty mind control rays.
Look out!
Edwards said we have to make sacrifices. I guessliving in a 28,00sq. ft.house the sacrifice that Edwards is talking about. His idea oif sacrifice is only for those who are poor. If you can afford it then it is ok provided you can pay for the carbon credits. Edwards is a fake. All their records are contrary to their voting records.
There is only one candidate who speaks the truth. His ideas are more realistic and I know he will do what he promised. He does not pretender like all the other candidates. That is Dennis Kucinich.
Here is another version of this speech. Audio is synced to video.

Edwards :First were going to tax, then were going to let the goverment in with some huge, un godly gov progam, then when that does not work we will tax some more and finally when all of these fails, we will blame the corporations!!!
Yea Johnny, more socialism, that will work!!!
where is the Kucincih video?
the Stosselites are hurting our economy with their denial. We are falling behind Europe and Asia in "green jobs"
felipe @ 57:
What a load.
Just because he's a self-made millionaire, no reasonable person is going to expect him to live like a pauper. If he wants to live in 50,000 sf home, more power to him. He didn't steal his money, like the Bushes. He earned it.
When you start blurring "the truth" with one's personal wealth, you've become irrelevant.
Chris @ 59:
Yeah. It will. And what do you mean "more socialism"? If you think we have that now...you must be just a bit left of this crowd.
Lollimom @ 62:
Yeah, what we need is an off-the-grid hermit in the White House. Because, really...how can a wealthy man have the requisite empathy to help out his fellow man and stop a fascist takeover?
Paleeze.
once again, kucinch has the policies for real change. once again, progressives shy away because he could never win. becuase no one will vote for him. because he could never win. because ...
grist even says "in spite of, or perhaps because of his policies..."
too many progressives don't really want change. they just want to be on a winner's band wagon. but they've got it backward - supporting edwards or clinton in hopes that you have their ear will fail - all it tells them is you'll go along with whatever non-bush compromises they already support.
but a groundswell for kucinich - even if he loses anyway - will make the middle of the road take notice.
80% reduction in GHG by 2050?
BWAHAHAHAHAAAA!!!!
Look : We're at the peak of oil extraction now. We're looking at 3% depletion every year after 2010, forever. Divide 70 by 3 = 23.3, so by 2033, we're going to be burning HALF the amount of oil we are now. Do it again. By 2046, we'll be burning HALF of that! So, 80% by 2050 is actually just stating the obvious.
And that's at 3%. i've seen *extremely credible* analysis done saying we're looking at 7 - 10% drop after 2015...
As I said, 80% by 2050 is just stating the obvious.
Chris @ 59:
Can you hear? Read lips? that is not the point. Edwards would stop the corporate welfare of Bush for the oil and gas/coal industries and level the playing field for new technologies. Tell me, why are huge tax breaks and incentives for big oil (in a climate of record profits for these companies) not labled 'socialism' by your thinking?
The only solution for this generation, because of the problems with climate, pollution, and peak oil is for some government incentives that can be relied upon. Not a rug that can be pulled out by the oil dinosaurs who will hang onto power tooth and nail untill the last drop of oil.
If we do nothing, your children will look back with anger. Change is always hard. We need to start this painfull process so America will remain a modern and rich nation.
equilibrio @ 30:
He has addressed this issue and it didn't go over very well. I found this in the comments by the way of the link that you supplied. Maybe you should have read those as well before damning him.

'cause that's what msm says.
NYCKid @ 5:
do you like LIEberman as much as you like Hillary?
NYCKid @ 3:
You make that sound pretty damning on Mr Edwards, you make it sound like hes run in all these campaigns, only three that Im aware of & his positions were reflective of the field he ran against as he has progressed...His position on health care in 04, more than "a couple of years" ago was on childrens healthcare like most of the other candidates...John Edwards is progressing.
YOU HAVE NOTHING ON THIS GUY EXCEPT TO TRY TO BRING HIM DOWN TO YOUR CANDIDATES LEVEL a Republican tactic.
Johnny2Bad @ 64:
The more I see Edwards on TV, the more he looks like just another twit with a nice hair cut. I would vote for Kucinich or Paul.
I'm supporting people with cahones this round.
Please people of the USA, vote for this guy or others that have the balls to speak the unpopular thoughts.
Do NOT vote for someone you want your daughter/son to marry.
Do NOT vote for the guy/gal that says what you like to hear.
Do NOT vote for the guy/gal you think would be a great guy to have breakfast with.
Vote for the guy/gal that can run your country.
Vote for the guy/gal that has independent thoughts and will have the gull to tell the lobbies where they can stick it.
Vote for the guy/gal that has the balls to stand up and speak about the problems.
You want a leader and not a drinking friend.
CoIntelPro @ 69:
And who owns the MSM? Could it be the military industrial complex?
Here's Kucinich's speech from this forum. Sounds like a strong position to me.
Dennis Kucinich's Opening During Global Warming Debate
John Edwards HAS taken a position as to encouraging R&D. He also wants to create 100,000 grenn collar jobs. Perhaps before you expres disappointment you shoeld examine his policies at http://johnedwards.com/ .
NYCKid @ 12:
Johnny2Bad @ 26:
Wow so you're sayin that even with all those republicans and all that money out there aiming to
bring Clintons down weren't able to find anything beyond the blue dress?
Maybe, cuz like you know, they really weren't guilty of ALLLLLLLL the crap that's been slung at them?
The funny part here, is that people expect politicians to be perfect, when our system isn't designed that way. As far as that goes, the Clintons were as close to perfect as you're going to get politically speaking.
You know what you can do with that cigar, right?
mo_dems @ 2:
Considering what Bill Clinton did, I would say that she is the other side of the procapitalism crowd. democracy, and some rights, but mostly just keep everone mostly alive.
And Bill has sexy with a woman and gets Fox News chastement treatment for the next 10 years.... But there is a list of Republicans as long as my arm who have SEX WITH CHILDREN.
So why are people on their side?
"Bill Clinton has sex with an intern Ha HA hA!"
"Name a Republican who hasn't had sex with a page?" I mean, besides Ron Paul...
Avid Reader @ 75:
If you are against War you are against the media and against america... They are now the 4th and most powerful brance of the government. The unchecked propoganda arm.
Lollimom @ 15:
Well since the polls are no longer done like up here with "Stats Canada" you have no oversight... How do you know if a corporation is even givning you the correct poll numbers.. Some don't even put certain people on their choices you have. The Polls in America are about as legit as the polls in Russia I assume by now.
Hillary is winning the Dem's and Rudy is winning the Repugs because that is what the MSM wants. Both will keep the war going until America is broke, and thats that.
Josh @ 79:
I don't know if its possible to miss my point any more than you did, "Josh" but from your other C&L posts I've come across, I must say I'm not surprised by your continued inanity.
