Nicole, they come up with "Thought Crime" Legislation. No, I'm not kidding you.

Here Come the Thought Police

With overwhelming bipartisan support, Rep. Jane Harman’s “Violent Radicalization and Homegrown Terrorism Prevention Act” passed the House 404-6 late last month and now rests in Sen. Joe Lieberman’s Homeland Security Committee. Swift Senate passage appears certain.

Not since the “Patriot Act” of 2001 has any bill so threatened our constitutionally guaranteed rights.

...Ms. Harman's...bill tramples constitutional rights by creating a commission with sweeping investigative power and a mandate to propose laws prohibiting whatever the commission labels “homegrown terrorism.”

The proposed commission is a menace through its power to hold hearings, take testimony and administer oaths, an authority granted to even individual members of the commission - little Joe McCarthys - who will tour the country to hold their own private hearings.

...Ms. Harman’s proposal includes an absurd attack on the Internet, criticizing it for providing Americans with “access to broad and constant streams of terrorist-related propaganda,” and legalizes an insidious infiltration of targeted organizations.

While Ms. Harman denies that her proposal creates “thought police,” it defines “homegrown terrorism” as “planned” or “threatened” use of force to coerce the government or the people in the promotion of “political or social objectives.” That means that no force need actually have occurred as long as the government charges that the individual or group thought about doing it.

Any social or economic reform is fair game. Have a march of 100 or 100,000 people to demand a reform - amnesty for illegal immigrants or overturning Roe v. Wade - and someone can perceive that to be a use of force to intimidate the people, courts or government.

The bill defines “violent radicalization” as promoting an “extremist belief system.” But American governments, state and national, have a long history of interpreting radical “belief systems” as inevitably leading to violence to facilitate change.

So conservatives are repressed homosexuals. No revelation there. I think it's safe to say they are generally sexually repressed. The basis of conservatism is to deny reality while secretly enjoying everything you condemn. Sorry, that's the definition of hypocrisy, you can understand my confusion. No conservatism is: I've got mine fuck you and kill anyone who thinks differently. So it's no wonder these people are repressed. Hard to enjoy life when you are so busy smacking everyone with the bible you didn't bother to read.

According to Conservapedia, The University of Chicago did a study of gay men living in Chicago's Shoreland neighborhood. Ok, I am a native Chicagoan and a graduate of Univ. of Chicago and have no clue what the neighborhood of Shoreland is. Perhaps it's a new name I'm not familiar with or a reference to Boystown. Maybe the school wanted to create a crusing guide for conservatives.

Question: So, what's up with conservative women? What do they see in these self-hating men who cannot, or will not, acknowledge their own sexuality?

Bradley Jones's picture

I hate to rain on everyone's parade, but the reason for the conservapedia results are probably due to Lewis Black highlighting it on the daily show back in June.

http://www.crooksandliars.com/2007/06/28/daily-show-lewis-black-exposes-...

I doubt that the site gets _that_ much traffic, so this exposure probably skewed the results enough to explain what we are currently seeing. Funny, yes. However, there is a rational explanation aside from a vast, Republicans are really gay conspiracy theory.

Straight Shooter's picture

I have a different viewpoint of why they're hitting those pages. I think they're "researching" information to use against homosexuals and to feel self-righteous. Look at the list again, many of the pages indicate problems/afflictions attributed to homosexual behavior. I refuse to visit those pages, so I can't vouch for the veracity of anything claimed therein.

It's pathetic that conservatives, most of which are self-professed "Christians," would spend so much time and energy searching for ways to feel superior to other human beings.

JustSickOfIt's picture

Udon Nomee @ 38:

I suspect that most of us, when commenting on the Conservative obsession with homosexuality, believe that we're exaggerating it for "dramatic effect". I know that I feel that way. Now I'm not so sure it's even possible to exaggerate it.

One ironic thing i noticed - even though their top-ten focuses almost entirely on gay sex, the Larry Craig page makes ablsolutely no mention of it:

http://www.conservapedia.com/Larry_Craig

Even though about a third of the page focuses on the "Airport Incident," it doesn't once mention what he was actually arrested for - or what the alegations were:

"On September 1, 2007, Craig announced he intended to resign from the Senate (effective September 30, 2007) after reports surfaced about an incident in June which he was arrested on a misdemeanor charge in a Minneapolis police airport sting operation in which Craig claimed entrapment."

Edwin's picture

Now we know that they MOSTLY think about. I'd say that's a teeny bit obsessive.

I often scoot over to Conservapedia to "check facts". Often, for topics conservatives like to avoid, there hasn't even been a page created yet. Or for a dose of humour, I like to read how they spin real news, like Larry Craig (from Conservapedia):

On September 1, 2007, Craig announced he intended to resign from the Senate (effective September 30, 2007) after reports surfaced about an incident in June which he was arrested on a misdemeanor charge in a Minneapolis police airport sting operation in which Craig claimed entrapment.[1] Craig is a regular commuter through the Minneapolis airport. Given a choice of immediately going to jail to process a plea of innocence, Craig agreed to plea guilty so he could finish his final flight home

This kind of thing really pisses me off. Seth Finkelstein went to Internet Archives and came up with this:

I actually started writing a blog comment here saying maybe it was plausible, and then I thought to go check the Internet Archive. Turns out we have snapshots of the Conservapedia Statistics page dating back to December 2006. I grabbed all the data it had, typed it into a spreadsheet, and looked at the chart.

The giveaway is the "Homosexuality" page itself. That page was getting 30,000 pageviews a month from March 15 to July 15. That's consistent with the 40,000/month rate it had from March 6 to March 15, shortly after it was created.

Then from July 15 to today, Nov. 22, it got 350,000 pageviews/month, an increase of 11 times. That's especially not believable considering that the Main Page on Conservapedia got only 125,000 pageviews/month during that same period (which is just a slight increase over its March-July rate).

The "Homosexuality" page from March to July, the most recent period available, got 13.9% as many pageviews as "Main Page." But from July to November it got 281% as many.

And as you point out, Seth, since "Homosexuality and Hepatitis" was created on Oct. 17, we know its 517,753 pageviews arrived in those 37 days, or 420,000 pageviews/month. It's not believable that since Oct. 17 that one small page has been 338% as popular as the Conservapedia Main Page.

The Internet Archive stats also let us calibrate the "Homosexuality" page against the "George W. Bush" page from 3/6/07 to 7/15/07. It had 21% more pageviews than GWB in March, and 5.7% more in July. This strongly indicates that no tampering was done with the "Homosexuality" pageview count as recently as July.

Extrapolating the March-July pageview rate to today, the most popular "real" page on the site, besides the Main Page, is probably indeed "Homosexuality." But not by much (a few percent). The 3rd, 4th, 5th and 6th pages are probably "Examples of Bias in Wikipedia," "Unicorn" (!?), "George W. Bush," and "Theory of Evolution."

Terry Cunningham's picture

I'm surprised that "sex with animals" didn't make the list. It's OK, Larry. We all believe you. No conservatives ever are, or ever were gay. Never. No sirree. Must be another case o' them libraal-media types.

You'd "say at least half the results on that page belong to liberals" because modern neocons think they can make up bullshit and call it fact. You have no basis to determine "half" are of ANY political persuasion.

So I could just as easily say that 90% of that traffic is closeted homosexual Republicans seeking fun things to do with George Bush's best buddy James Dale Guckert aka Jeff Gannon aka "Bulldog" (gay male prostitute), Ted Haggard (and his 40yr old meth-dealing man whore lover Mike Jones), and of course Larry "WIDE STANCE" Craig (NOT Foley, as he is a pedophile, rather than gay). But then there's also all the lesser Republicans, like Bob Allen of the Florida house, a Republican that followed an undercover officer into a nasty public park toilet and offered to PAY TO GIVE the cop a blowjob for $20! After getting ready go go down on the man, and getting busted, he stammered that he was FOLLOWED the cop into the bathroom becase the cop was a large black man, and he was so afraid that the first thing he thought of to say way, "Excuse me sir, I'm a racist, but I followed you in here to ask if I may fellate you if I pay you $20? Pretty please?" Or Glenn Murphy Jr. the National Chairman of the Young Republicans, that it appears is a serial fellatio ninja of sorts, that at least twice has confirmed that he would get fellow Young Republicans drunk enough to crash on his couch overnight so he could sneak back in the middle of the night and... you know, sneak a taste, I guess... until one woke during the covert op, and understandably freaked out.

Of course, the real reason most of these antics are creepy isn't the gay part, it is the fact that they're all gay bashers! They aren't like Michael Huffington, who just wanted to be a gay Republican without advocating violence and discrimination against gays. Heck most of them attempted to pay for sex, or even commit sex crimes against the will of another! Both illegal, of course. And again, Foley the pedophile along with most of the Republican leadership like former Speaker of the House (3rd in line to the presidency) Dennis Hastert that helped cover us Foley and protect him from prosecution for YEARS and YEARS while he was preying on young boys still in high school that were supposed to be in care of his authority (most of whom were not gay or remotely interested but cowed into sex games because of his position of power)!

They sure are laying a lot of log
cabin Republicans on a muddy foundation over there... I'm sure it's all a setup, all a coincidence, all a plot of everybody and their black helicopters against neocons... If it's that much easier to believe that a total hypocritical moral self-loathing and deceit of the entire Republican leadership then I guess their stuck with paranoia instead of reality...

It is starting to make the hypocrisy of regular massive rip-off schemes and bribes like Cheney, Duke Cunningham, Tom Delay, Ted Stevens, etc. look positively tame by comparison.

But I blame it all on the Clenis.

This is patently dishonest. The counter doesn't distinguish between conservative and liberal computers who check into Conservapedia. The pages on homosexuality have been linked in many, many liberal blogs, where liberal bloggers obligingly click on them, thereby adding to the counter. What looks like Conservative obsession is nothing more than the results when these pages are linked for people to go laugh at.

I'd say at least half the results on that page belong to liberals.

But as usual, people who bring this story to you in C&L, Americablog, et al, and the people above who make comments assuming these results are not skewed in any manner, are typically dishonest. Think about it. Sheesh!

I confess. I spend all my spare time sabatoging Conservapedia, as I have absolutely nothing else to do. (Sheesh yourself @sshole.)

IN-credible. I decided to do a little research. After all, they are a conservative site, right? How else do priorities fall? They had NO entry at all for something as "Christian" and "conservative" as Peace Corps! NONE. They had 4 entries for Christmas, and 1 for Satan. Jesus and Reagan had 7 and 10 entries respectively...compared to the 35 entries and 28 sub-entries for homosexuality. Even evolution and Intelligent Design fall way behind at 20 and 8 entries. Why are these people SO fascinated with the same sex thing? Oh no...there is NO agenda here!

"Hunger is a bodily state that happens when one does not eat enough food. Hunger can lead starvation, and starvation can lead to death. Many people are hungry, though fewer people are hungry in capitalistic countries."

This is an actual quote from Conservapedia for "hunger". Not even grammatically correct. What, did a "liberal blogger" add this in too? This is really sad! They should at least TRY to be grammatically correct!

Now actually that's pretty funny... makes me wonder if the site is a joke? (While possibly true, it is so pedantic that I wonder.)

This link is to a parody of Bush’s mishandling of the war in Iraq.

What makes this especially bizarre is that (according to the logo on the screen)
it was produced by FOX.

WTF?

Several other places (bOINGbOING, for instance) have found that the figures were jiggered by pranksters. It's still pretty funny, though, that the work of the pranksters remains in place.

What's kind of pathetic is the total number of hits. Their main page got about 1.9M, and the top pranked page had about 1.6M. It doesn't look like many non-pranksters bother visiting the thing at all. I guess when conservatives want facts, they go somewhere more reliable.

This is why they don't have time to read the bills they pass.

We need a law that every bill brought before Congress must contain at least every other page of homosexual pornography.

At least then they'll look like they're reading the bills.

Is the site that holds that link down? Anyone else having trouble getting to it?

"Rarely is the question asked, is our conservatives learning?"
"A conservative DO learn!"
"You're working hard to put food on your conservatives!"

Since when has proper use of grammar or accurate information been a hallmark of the new conservatives? They elected this dillbag TWICE! Besides, although he says he's used "the Google" the neocons aren't so great on understanding the Internets (aka "series of tubes") -- the internet is about OTHER people. You know, like icky poor people 'n stuff. Why would Cheney's "go fuck yourself" crowd care about that (or anything outside of the bubble)?

Now, I know I'm late to this but ... everyone does realize this is NOT a joke right? Also, note that no other nation on the face of the earth has produced anything quite this stupid. People talk about 'america haters' - yes I am one. A proud America hater. I hate america to fucking death.
