Trent Lott to retire from Senate

MSNBC had the scoop this morning:

NBC News has learned that Trent Lott's in the midst of informing close allies that he plans to resign his senate seat before the end of the year. It's possible a formal announcement of his plans could take place as early as today.

Josh Kraushaar has more, including speculation about potential candidates for Lott's Mississippi seat.

Personally, I'd rather see Lott and his ilk perp-walked out of Congress instead of letting 'em resign and go free. But so long as they're gone, I guess. Unfortunately, there's still the long and daunting task of rebuilding the nation they're leaving in smoldering ruins.

Did anyone catch Erin Burnett on Joe Scarborough's show this AM. She referred to French P.M. as Rudy's man-crush, and said that noone could blame him for having a man-crush when looking at Sarcozy (sp?). Then she said that she was talking about the man on the right, not the monkey in the middle.

When Scarborough feigned ignorance as to who she was referring, she was that not talkiing about German P.M. Angela Merkle, who was on the left. Willie Geis (sp?) then exclaimed that she must be talking about "my president" or words to that effect.

Man, oh man. Who would have guessed she (working for CNBC) is opposed to the Chimp!!!

From TP: "UPDATE IV: “While the exact reason Lott is stepping down before he finishes his term is unknown, the general speculation is that a quick departure immunizes Lott against tougher restrictions in a new lobbying law that takes effect at the end of the year. But the real question is WHY? Why so many Repugs jumping ship? Do they know something we don't? Do they know Bush is a lunatic and is about to push the button? Some people suggest that it's because they think they'll get their asses handed to them in 2008 so they're getting out while they can. Good question...

Why now, why so sudden? He could have comfortably served out his six year term, but instead he's suddenly resigning. Why?

I was watching NOW on PBS about the Alaska/Oil scandal, and if the FBI and Justice Department follow through, then it's totally logical that big heads in Washington will roll. Maybe he's about to be indicted? I have a hard time thinking that this administrations Justice Department would go after the oil lobby and itself, but one can always dream.

Lott is in a barbershop quartet with Larry Craig. Hmmmm....are there pictures?
Judging by his financial disclosure, he has money, but not as much as most other Republican Senators. Could it just be financial? Or that he will have so little power in the next Congress?
Could it be that the Mississippi State House is a little too small for someone with the ego of Haley Barbour? Could Barbour appoint himself? Is he pushing Trent out?
Questions, questions...

If bush suspends the election, will this country actually split? many military facilities in the north have been eliminated or relocated, so the strategy may yet play itself out. who knows, we might become the confederate states of america

Or perhaps it's merely personal acknowledgment of how much they've fluxored the country and they don't want to be around to take the blame after the American people finally wake up. IF they do, that is. yeah, that's gotta be it. They see the upcoming financial and societal collapse (since they've personally had a hand in engineering it) and want to grab their assets and run like a rabbit to a safe haven. Paraguay. anyone?

You know, I'm beginning to think the conservative base has no flipping idea what they want. Now, not even Trent Lott is conservative enough for them. The righty blogs are flaming him for everything from his stance on illegal immigration to his barbershop quartet side gig. And further, some wingers are putting up posts calling for other "potentially" gay republican politicos (you know the ones...) to all quit. They hate everyone.

What sad, sad shape the republican party is in (yay). With a base full on loonballs, what can one realistically expect?

Big Oil and the late Strom Thurmond is losing one of their best friends. Hmm ... Lott is 66 now. His term ends in 2012, when he would be 72. Under current law, he could start lobbying at age 73 but under the new one, he would have to wait until he was 74. If he really ever intended to start lobbying at age 73, he could have resigned as late as 2011.

All that tells me he never intended to serve his full term, despite what he may have told voters. Trent Lott, it now becomes clear, serves a constituency of one -- Trent Lott. The voters of Mississippi be damned. If we have a "Crooks and Liars" Hall of Fame, I nominate Trent Lott for it.

And all this time I was hoping to see Lott and George W. Bush sitting on the porch of Lott's vacation home. In SCUBA gear, of course.

I wish the Deep South states would do us all a big favor and secede again and form another Confederacy. The rest of us should be grateful to see them go. They could have GeeDubya as president, Trent Lott as VP and the Rev. Sun Myung Moon or Pat Robertson as Minister of Religion. Since these states are so pro-business and anti-labor they could create a true corporate paradise in which workers would be required to work 12 hour days with no vacation or sick pay. Unions would be illegal. All health and safety and environmental regs would be repealed. The wealthiest citizens would be exempt from all income taxes. The first day of huntin' season would be a national holiday along with Jeff Davis Day, Strom Thurmond Day, Jesse Helms Day, etc. That's the kind of society these red staters seem to prefer. If not, why do they keep electing people like Trent Lott?

Let these states secede and good riddance to them. Without them, maybe the remaining states wll be able to solve some of the pressing problems we face such as global warming, national heath care, energy efficiency, etc.

The fact that the GOP frontrunners showed their racism by not attending debates hosted by the African American community.

The way they have decimated the middle class by sending jobs oversea's to third world countries run by fascist dictatorships < China

Need I go on?

your evidence is spot one, but blaming the south for the war and state of affairs in the country today is a bit much.

its true that these biased thots took root and were spurred on in the southern states.

and its also true that reconciliation has been hard to come by.

and its true that many ills still persist in the south today.

and its true that the brain trust for BushCo is largely southern white males.

and its true that the general distrust of the federal gub'ment is rooted in basic tenets of southern repub logic.

and its true that the south gnerally lost said war.

and its true that many from this school of thot have a defeatist, one man against the world, attitude.

..but with all of that... to blame them for the war and the state of things in 'merica today...

is a bit much

it's just an announcement, like rumsfeld leaving the pentagon. until it becomes reality, I will not hold my breath. as to what secrets that racist dickhead may be hiding, he apparently hates enough of this country to keep the secret.

I think he's resigning to accept a commission as a general in the forthcoming Blackwater coup to finalize the confederate takeover.

If bush suspends the election, will this country actually split? many military facilities in the north have been eliminated or relocated, so the strategy may yet play itself out. who knows, we might become the confederate states of america

to me, the big question is: how many dems might be in on the deal, like feinstein, shumer, emmanuel, pelosi, BenNelson(neb.), etc.?

woo weee! conspiracy theorizing at its best!!

you gotta love it!!

to be a fly on the walls or a circuit in the phones of repub leaders in wash-ing-ton right now!!!

Did he just find out he's gay?

Alright, I know I'm late to the table with this, but didn't some news channel just air a clip about Stevens up in Alaska and how tight Lott and Hastert were with "Uncle Ted"? I'll be going back over the comments to see if I'm out alone on this one, but doesn't anyone else think there might be a small chance that the probe that seems to be making life hell for Alaska's A#1 Senator could be posing some inconveniences back here in the lower 48?

Another GOP gay scandal??? Be still my heart! It is being reported that Lott had a long-time "relationship" with a high-priced male escort named Benjamin Nicholas.

I think Drudge would say this is "developing...."

Matt, if what Perez Hilton is reporting is true, "probe" takes on a whole new meaning in this investigation!

Trent Lott Fallout: The Gay Escort Who Knew Too Much
Monday November 26th, 2007 5:35 PM by BHDC Staff
Filed under: Scoops, Gay, Trent Lott
UPDATE, 5:30: “Here’s my public comment, on-the-record: Sen. Lott and I have no current affiliation with one another. I’m sure he would appreciate no further scrutiny,” Benjamin Nicholas tells Big Head DC.

ORIGINAL:

Must credit Big Head DC:

Once upon a time, there was a twentysomething boy-next-door type with reddish blond hair and a brilliantly white smile. Not one to shy away from attention, he wrote a blog called “Fifteen Minutes,” and also became a freelance writer for various publications, including The Stranger in Seattle. He’d often focus on his non-traditional lifestyle as a gay male escort — a topic that often fascinated his readers, which, in turn, helped him to garner a substantial amount of powerful business acquaintances through the years.

Based in San Antonio, he would travel all over the world to meet his clients, which included high profile celebrities, businessmen and even politicians in the United States Congress.

Sometimes within his writings he’d give advice on how other males could become successful escorts. Other times he’d post videos of himself flexing on YouTube. Once, he even scolded gay escort Mike Jones for outing Rev. Ted Haggard as one of his gay escort business participants.

“You were paid for sex, Mike,” he wrote in 2006. “The most important rule you can follow when taking people’s money in exchange for sex is that—no matter what—their lives stay their own and whatever passes between the two of you remains private. Period.”

Many of his clients greatly appreciate his professionalism. In fact, according to one 66-year-old patron who reviewed him on a gay escort site, he is “a very reliable escort who keeps you informed.”

The boy happens to be real, and his “stage name” is Benjamin Nicholas. One of the politicos Big Head DC has learned he’s alleged to have been involved with is the married Sen. Trent Lott, 66, who unexpectedly announced his retirement on Monday. Lott is well-known to have been against a plethora of gay rights issues throughout his terms in Congress. He was also good friends with Sen. Larry Craig throughout his time in Congress.

Nicholas told Big Head DC today via e-mail that he didn’t want to go on the record to talk about his dealings with Lott, because, said Nicholas, “Trent is going through his fair share of scrutiny right now and I don’t want to add to it.” However, e-mail and other records confirm that the two have met on at least two occasions.

“All I can say at this point is no comment,” Nicholas told us. “It’s the professional thing for me to do.”

In a subsequent e-mail message, Nicholas confirmed that another publication is working on a story about a “possible relationship” between Lott and himself, but Nicholas also “politely declined” an interview for that story.

“As I said before, Lott has quite a bit on his plate right now and I don’t really want to add fuel to the embers,” Nicholas told Big Head DC.

Republicans Trail Democrats in Fund-Raising

http://www.nytimes.com/2007/07/04/us/politics/04repubs.html?pagewanted=1...

Since the start of the year, the Democrats raised nearly 50 percent more than the Republicans, $144.3 million compared with $101.7 million. That includes money that the candidates can use in the primary and in the general election.

did a cold wind from Alaska help Trent on his way?

This is an issue of one Klansman (Ted Stevens) ratting out the Grand Wizard (Trent Lott).

I will never forget how he went running to BET to bail his ass out back in 2002 when the Senate threw him out of his Majority Leader position for honoring Strom Thurmond, and forgetting C-SPAN's camera crew was at the party when he said Thurmond should have been elected POTUS on the Dixiecrat platform. I thought I was high on cold medicine cause I was home with the 'flu at the time I heard it on TV...

Well, we know Diaper Dave Vitter isn't. But I wonder what it is that makes him want to have sex while he's shitting on himself. Just askin'.

Although it's also looking like many ReThugs would have benefitted from taking those sex ed classes they were so busy cutting funding from, so they could deal with their sexual hangups in more healthy and realistic ways.

Lott will stay in the Senate long enough to insure that his surreptitious add-on to the next version of the 'No Child Left
Behind' act for $100M to renovate his Mississippi 'Cottage' gets through.

When he retires, he'll sit, up to his ass in $10K bills, in his 'money room', counting the graft he stole over the past half-century.

A new development breaking over at Towerload alleges that another reason 'ol Trent may be quitting is because of a possible affair with a male escort by the name of Benjamin Nichols. , if this story has legs, is there ANY Repub who isn't a hypocritical closet case?!?

I saw the news that Lott will resign before the end of the year at: http://www.iht.com/articles/ap/2007/11/26/america/NA-GEN-US-No.-2-Republ... , I am not sorry to see him go, but I think he did some good in his home state. And now Gov. Barbour will be hard pressed to find someone who fits that description better than himself. I read his book "Herding Cats: A Life in Politics", which is a memoir of personal insights into his career in politics. After I read it, I think I know what a person he is. I found this book with a good price here: http://dealstudio.com/searchdeals.php?deal_id=70368 , if you are interested in him, you can read this book.
