Karl Rove Blames Tom Daschle For 2002 Iraq Resolution

icon Download | play icon Download | play

This morning on Fox News Sunday, Karl Rove--who is quickly becoming the laughing stock of Washington-- appeared with Rep. Chris Van Hollen (chair of the DCCC) to talk politics. When the discussion turned to Iraq, Van Hollen seized the opportunity to confront Rove for his failed attempt to blame the Democrats for pushing the White House into voting on the 2002 Iraq war invasion resolution. Rove's response? Why, it was all the fault of former Democratic Senator, Tom Daschle. What?

Yes, the truth finally comes out -- the tyrannical, warmongering Tom Daschle was out on the news shows in 2002, beating the drums of war and eventually the Bush administration, with his boot to their throat, relented and let the Democrats have their war.

Van Hollen reads a statement from former White House Press Secretary, Ari Fleischer, who refutes Rove's claims, but missed the opportunity to bring up Andrew Card, who not only refuted Rove's claims, but used him as a punchline earlier this week. Rove kept spinning, but eventually, host Chris Wallace put an end to the discussion. Let's hope Turdblossom stays out there making a fool of himself for as long as possible...

Think Progress has more...

I think this goes to the "never admit making a mistake" theory of Karl's. Just keep repeating the lie, sooner or later your critics will get bored - and your version of events will become the official history.

My suggestion: any Democrats appearing on a talk show with Karl should bring him a stuffed shark and ask him to jump over it. Maybe we can all send shark-encrusted jump ropes to Time Magazine?

So it's the democrats who are responsible for our overwhelming victory and democracy spreading in Iraq? I guess all the rabid right wingers owe us all a big old apology and need to bow down to our amazing terrorism fighting abilities. You're welcome Rush and Sean.

The war was illegal from the start - it was a CRIME. Everyone - including triangulating democrats - who supported it should be charged with committing crimes against humanity.

This was nothing less than ARMED clauswitzian Politics - which is illegal.

P.S.
As a comment - Rove wins this one. Tactically, the biggest problem the democrats have had is their reactive nature. They have yet to really take the initiative and lead events. Rove is doing what Rove always does - he is leading events. That is a winner - and the democrats will let him do it.

As I noted, this is reactive.

How about this - why would you think armed suppression would fail? Do you know what peace is? Do you understand the difference between a lack of hostility towards your neighbors and the lack of opportunity to express hostility towards your neighbors?

Peace is not a consequence of a lack of opportunity for violence - the surge - peace is a consequence of the lack of hostility - which has nothing to do with a surge, or anything military for that matter.

The issue should have been the elimination of the hostility NOT the elimination of opportunity for violence.

One of the reasons for reduced violence is homogenized neighborhoods - cleansed neighborhoods.

I would be interested in learning whether returning refugees are returning to re-mix purified neighborhoods or is their return buttressing the homogeneity of the neighborhoods. In otherwords, now that the 'other types' of people are gone, is it safe for them to come home. This is a story that isnt being clearly covered. Perhaps one of the C&L journalists like Nicole will investigate.

If they are returning and creating peaceful heterogenious neighborhoods then we have peace. Otherwise, its nothing more or less than the inevitable consequence of sectarian conflict.

The bloggers need to step up on this issue. I doubt you will hear anything on this topic from the government.

Smartass - yeah you.

Clinton has 50% negatives. Half the people in the US wont vote for Clinton under any circumstance. She is the worse candidate to run against the republicans. For that reason, I suspect the republicans are doing everything in their power to see to it that she is the candidate. Zogby polls (I believe it was zogby) indicate that 4 republicans candidates can beat clinton. Edwards destroys every republican in every poll - which is why he wont be the democratic candidate.

I loved watching Van Hollen touch Rove's arm numerous times and Rove's jumbled complaint the first time. Then at the end, when asked by Wallace if they'd return, Rove said something to the effect of "yes if he would stop touching me". Karl is not lying, he's spinning factual events to paint a completely non-factual narrative. What Karl is painfully spinning is the fact that to prove Cheney's idea of a unitary executive, the original plan was to go to war WITHOUT getting authorization from congress. Democrats naturally and constitutionally said no, you need congressional authorization. Following that chain of events, Karl blames correctly Dems for the congressional vote. Karl's lying, treasonous misdirection is to equate the vote with going to war, thus laying the blame at the Democrat's feet.

What the press or anyone who is interested needs to point out in response to this is that Cheney's original plan was to go to war with no congressional approval because he felt that despite the constitution, the president didn't need it.

The flock of 'em pushed blindly to war in Iraq 2000-03 with the promise of enough money to go round... FOR ALL OF 'EM! Read the daily Congressional Record from the period/ check the various votes to the run-up of hostilities in Iraq. A majority of Democrats including, Mr. Daschle were lockstep with the President.

This is a money war people... profiteering... oil & resource management, the dollar v. euro, defense contractor pork & campaign contribution kick-backs, Evangelist collection plate passing... to fill the heavenly bank accounts of each of our elected representatives. My only question to Daschle is what was the size of your personal portfolio before the war and where does it stand today?

The Democrats pushed toward war with marked determination as surely as their Republican brethren. The only difference being Democrats, as always, sneaks and hypocrites on the run-up to war, back-rooming deals then whining to the press about Big, Bad W.

All the while 3,881 of our kids are dead.

whats interesting about this little debate is that you get ot see how Karl really works. Usually we have seen him in a very controlled environement. Here he is free wheelong and running his "Facts" by the panel. You can see how tenacious he is and prepare a counter offensive. Say what you will about KKKArl he is prepared for his debates. He had his little Tom Daschle quotes all in a row and whne someone start srunning off "quotes" it is hard to rebut especially when you have to fight through the Fox News cabal. Basically you can see that Karl is a bully and you have to be prepared to rebut a bully at every turn!

If I've said it once, I've said it a thousand times...THIS IS DASCHLE'S WAR!

moondancer's picture

Yah, everybody is outraged by the blatant lies, but remember how bad a president Reagan was? And how is he remembered now? As the second coming. And the reason is almost twenty years of repeating the same lies until they are the conventional wisdom.
There is some precedent for what Rove is doing. He knows if he keeps this outrage up, wingnuttery will run with it, then some asshat at a MSM outfit will write a piece like the one this week by Perry Bacon at WaPo, then a few years later someone will reference that article to support the Daschle claim. Then the lazy stenographers dont do their homework and voila...history is rewritten.

a little googling...

Daschle made it clear he was far from supporting any sort of congressional resolution authorizing the use of force against Iraq.

"There are a number of questions that remain about this effort," Daschle said, citing the reaction of the international community to Bush's speech, the effect a strike against Iraq would have on the war on terrorism and U.S. plans for what would replace Saddam's regime in Iraq.
http://archives.cnn.com/2002/ALLPOLITICS/09/12/iraq.congress/index.html

On the other hand the cowardice of the Democratics is well documented here:
The initial posture of Gephardt and Senate Majority Leader Tom Daschle was to oppose any war resolution being brought before Congress before the elections, with the claim that the Bush administration was “playing politics” by seeking to put Democrats on the spot in the run-up to the November 5 vote.

It is, of course, true that the Bush administration and Republican Party operatives cynically calculated the electoral advantage they presumed they would gain from the war resolution

The fact that Rove can say this on Network television and not have the commentator laugh in his face shows who OWNS THIS COUNTRY AND IT'S MEDIA. The right wing.

Anon@32 is correct..

And the old timers will note this as I .. and certainly some others who hang here for years have said that

Hillary can't win... Why is fairly obvious.

I mean aside from the Democratic party cutting out the CORE of the party to pander to the right wing middle of the roads when they are for the most part ethically opposite from the ideal ideals held by the core of the Democratic party...

She has sooo much hype.. Such a War Chest... Such an efficient machine ...

Why does she need my vote?

I mean when my very own Union calls me to poll my opinion and asked me the top 3 candidates I would vote for-- I named Kucinich (A UNION MEMBER!)... Then Edwards... then I really could not decide a third... the Caller starts to say.. "Hillllaarrry??"

Which outraged me to no end... and I let her know... and she quickly understood and apologized for trying to FEED me a canned answer... What bothered me most about that is not when I opened up my Union newsletter 2 months later and the sleeving spineless leaders announced that they are backing Hillary... It is when they talked about their poll .. and I thought about how many people they called other then me.. who would of heard the pollsters feed them Hillary.. and the people they are feeding said .. yeah.. on name recognition alone.

Hillary does need my vote.. as she is a corporate hot air ballon... She needs my vote very badly...

She does... but she will not get it...

I am not holding my nose.. I am not strapping on a barf bag.. I am simply not voting against my principals in 2008... as I have stated many times.. Kerry was the last time I gave out a freebie... the last.

I have a feeling in my feet that I am no where near alone...

Just as I can say... When watching that festering pustule in the Video.. I know I was not alone in hoping and imagining for a split second that when that other guy reached into his jacket... he was going to pull out a .44 mag...

You can say I am a dreamer.

Did the (traitor IMHO) actually say, "don't touch me, don't touch me"? Yuk, quick, go you wash your hands, Rep. Van Hollen. You don't want to bring that contamination home with you.

Dirty Hippie Blogger @ 87:

Tom Daschle is wrong and Karl Rove is absolutely correct despite his incessant blathering but not for the reason that they (D's & R's) would like the public to believe.

Thanks Democrats. You suck!

No, the DNC pushed for an authorization for force. The public was led to believe that there was real diplomacy. Stop changing history. This President wasn't serious about peace or diplomacy: IT was an authorization to use force, as a last resort. It wasn't the DNC saying, "We want to rush to war."

So Rove was hired as a "journalist" (for Newsweek) when he is so intent on partisan spin that he can't even get reality straight?

What the hell did Newsweek think it was doing? They are becoming a laughingstock.

In late Spring/early Summer, the MSM was parading Newt Gingrich as being a viable presidential candidate for the GOP and than Delay was given some MSM time and now the Phildelphia Inquirer newspaper is giving Ricky Santorum some column space once/month and now we got the Liar-in-Chief, Karl Rove, getting some MSM time. Interesting, we don't hear from Gingrich and Delay anymore and Ricky's Inquirer column is torn to pieces each month by Phillynews.com. BTW, Ricky's been trying to re-write his history, too. Ricky must be a Karl Rove follower. Rove's media presence will become diminished and the next time Rove becomes a big media topic will be when he is marched into the Senate in handcuffs for contempt of Congress.

McDuff @ 65:

When a democrat wins the presidency in 2008, the republican lying machine will be preparing for 2009 and beyond for they will use that opportunity to sell the failures in Iraq as yet another "Democrat" blunder. By 2013, the public would have forgotten who got us into the mess in the first place, short attention span, don't you know? And the republican party will win the white house again.

The one thing that gives me hope is talking to kids today (17-25). Most of them loathe George Bush, and they can't stand the religious right, or the republican party either.

They don't hate gays, are much more accepting of minorities and inter-racial marriage, and think government should be used to help people. They also think that the super-rich should pay more in taxes .

When they start voting in 2012 & 2016, it could really be slim pickens for the repukes and their travelling side-show of hatred, bigotry and intolerance.

I see a likely republican in the whitehouse in 2009. (Assuming Clinton is nominated)

Change your meds then.

Kerry was beatable, Dean was not. Kerry was the nominee. This is happening again.

You can be a fanboi - or you can think.

When asked if they will vote Democrat or Republican regardless of canditate, Americans saythat they will vote Democratic.

When asked about individual candidates, Americans don't pick Democrats.

Is this a case of bad news for Democrats because individual candidates don't win in a person to person match-up?

Or is this a case of bad news for Republicans because without even knowing the candidates involved, Americans don't want another Republican in office?

Spin baby spin!
